ignxbox: Doom 3 Review

When you guys finish the campaign, go play DM online. It's better than Splinter Cell.

Here's the best tip that will save your life: dark corners :)

There's nothing more satisfying than killing someone with a superior weapon using either a Chainsaw or your fists.

The Beserk powerup is fun as hell too! :D

Yeah no kid'n...i get a kick out of guys on the net tha floss their pc specs like they are hung like a horse lol...i guess wha ever makes them feel manly...more power to them!11

Ok, what the hell. More manly?

I didn't go out and brag about my specs. Dark requested them. As for the details about how well it was running on my system, they were given to refute the outrageous claim that Xbox version looks better any what any PC can run (or suggestion of). Giving the specific details about how the game was running (resolution, quality settings) was needed because the game is extremely scalable.

I have nothing against the Xbox version. It's great more people get to experience the game. I'm just against morons making outrageous claims.

The best part about DM is that literally no-one can see you in the shadows if you are in them.

You pick a dark corner with a rocket launcher near a powerful weapon, aim towards the ground and wait.

so it is confirmed that doom 1 and doom2 are only available on the collectors edition?

even though they are on the game disc..

Actually it's Ultimate Doom and Doom II.

Multiplayer in both Coop and DM splitscreen is a blast with friends.

PC version can run and look better than the XBox version...don't be dumb enough to think otherwise

What the Xbox version pulls off though is amazing especially after considering the platform it's running on....anyway:

Purchased the PC mission pack last night and the XBox collector's edition.

Classic Doom runs great though the MIDI is akward...most of it sounds worse than it did on my PC though some of the instruments--out of no where--sound awesome...haven't tried multiplayer yet

Doom 3 for the XBox runs freaking great on the system...played for about an hour before calling it a night but the changes that I noticed are mostly cosmetic. There are more loading screens but they are all kept small and non-intrusive IMO. The (normal/bump?) mapping is very low res along with most of the textures...and the awesome intro was regulated to a pre-rendered movie with missing scenes. Characters where moved about and levels were made smaller and, in some cases, much less complex. The awesome mars surface was removed from the 'intro' and computer screens update at a much slower rate than they did in the PC version. Accessing the PDA brings about a brief pause that simply wasn't there before. The previously mentioned moved characters allow for them to still suprise players who have played the PC version before and the lighting, while slightly downgraded, is still fucking amazing. The ground shadows continue to amaze and the sound appears to have been faithfully translated to the console version (I cant verify this as I only use TV Speakers). Great atmosphere abounds and the gameplay, while simple and straightforward, is still enjoyable. The Xbox puts up a great fight and runs the game in a way that a computer with similar, double, or maybe even triple the specs could never even dream of...though this is obviously an assumption. I can only guess how the game will be receieved by console gamers.

Updated my video drivers (9800pro) to the newest Cat and reinstalled Doom 3, patched it up, and installed the mission pack. Played a bit of the original on the High quality visual setting and the game, outside of 2 areas in the intro segment, ran at a smooth pace that it couldn't dream of running at when I first got it...I'm guessing the new catalyst drivers are responsible for the boost in performance. Anyway, after reaching the
invasiuon
scene I played the XBox version for the hour or so that I previously mentioned. Afterwards, I played the mission pack for a few minutes but was already tired from a long day so I only played until I misjudged a jump and fell to my death...watching and playing the intro to this game right after playing the xbox version is like night and day...the game suprisingly runs very smooth and looks amazing...but I need to play the game a bit more than just 3 minutes before I talk about it, I guess.

I'm kinda surprised at how quick this thread moved down the list. Yeah, the PC game's been out for awhile, but this is one damn impressive port. While there's no question that it was graphically up a notch on my PC, I'm finding myself enjoying it more on the XBox using the whole Halo-knockoff control scheme and some good 5.1 sound via my HT setup. That said, I've notice some sound clipping here and there (particularly during the scene where the disemboweled guy stuck the ceiling starts screaming and some of those lovely two-headed dog-like demons spawn), but I noticed clipping now and then in the PC version as well, so I suppose it's not too surprising. If a port this well was managed on the aging XBox, I'm pretty excited for what the next-gen consoles will manage...

By the way..doom3 on the xbox rocks hard and looks pretty damn good compared to any high end pc..including mine which drawfs mr cool daddy teh_pwn's :lol

Errrr...

He only posted his specs after dark10x asked him to post his.
And out of curiousity...what are your PC specs?

The Classic Dooms have some problems. You can't choose your difficulty in co-op, there's only one sky backdrop(even in hell all you see is green mountains) and it's way too easy to accidently enter the cheat codes. Since I play holding run the entire time I would accidently put in the god mode code like every level. It's still probably the best console version of Doom.

and Doom III is great. I thought some of it dragged near the end after Hell, but everything else was really good.
