PC version can run and look better than the XBox version...don't be dumb enough to think otherwise
What the Xbox version pulls off though is amazing especially after considering the platform it's running on....anyway:
Purchased the PC mission pack last night and the XBox collector's edition.
Classic Doom runs great though the MIDI is akward...most of it sounds worse than it did on my PC though some of the instruments--out of no where--sound awesome...haven't tried multiplayer yet
Doom 3 for the XBox runs freaking great on the system...played for about an hour before calling it a night but the changes that I noticed are mostly cosmetic. There are more loading screens but they are all kept small and non-intrusive IMO. The (normal/bump?) mapping is very low res along with most of the textures...and the awesome intro was regulated to a pre-rendered movie with missing scenes. Characters where moved about and levels were made smaller and, in some cases, much less complex. The awesome mars surface was removed from the 'intro' and computer screens update at a much slower rate than they did in the PC version. Accessing the PDA brings about a brief pause that simply wasn't there before. The previously mentioned moved characters allow for them to still suprise players who have played the PC version before and the lighting, while slightly downgraded, is still fucking amazing. The ground shadows continue to amaze and the sound appears to have been faithfully translated to the console version (I cant verify this as I only use TV Speakers). Great atmosphere abounds and the gameplay, while simple and straightforward, is still enjoyable. The Xbox puts up a great fight and runs the game in a way that a computer with similar, double, or maybe even triple the specs could never even dream of...though this is obviously an assumption. I can only guess how the game will be receieved by console gamers.
Updated my video drivers (9800pro) to the newest Cat and reinstalled Doom 3, patched it up, and installed the mission pack. Played a bit of the original on the High quality visual setting and the game, outside of 2 areas in the intro segment, ran at a smooth pace that it couldn't dream of running at when I first got it...I'm guessing the new catalyst drivers are responsible for the boost in performance. Anyway, after reaching the
scene I played the XBox version for the hour or so that I previously mentioned. Afterwards, I played the mission pack for a few minutes but was already tired from a long day so I only played until I misjudged a jump and fell to my death...watching and playing the intro to this game right after playing the xbox version is like night and day...the game suprisingly runs very smooth and looks amazing...but I need to play the game a bit more than just 3 minutes before I talk about it, I guess.
