Ikaruga (PC) |OT| Even though the resolution is high, I never give in.

For anyone who might be interested i'm going to attempt to beat this game on my stream over at twitch.tv/caleb_plays in about 20 mins or so.

I used to be decent at shumps but its been years. Anyway, I usually just chill and talk with viewers and look awkwardly at my webcam. If you do come by be sure to let me know you're from Gaf!

So, I already have Ikaruga on Dreamcast and also on Gamecube.

I would like to buy the PC version, BUT not if it's broken with input lag etc.

Since I already have the 2 other versions, I'm thinking I should hold off on this if it's going to be sub-par. Do you guys think they'll fix the problems or just leave it?

Oh man, TATE mode is glorious. Could never do this with my TV for the 360 version.

That being said, the game doesn't detect my 360 SF4 TE stick. It works for other games. Help :(

What? Every game I have tried with my stick worked. It is a PS3/PC controller, it acts as a Dinput controller when plugged into the PC.

Edit: What I should have said was that dinput is not supported.

Yeah. Dinput is not supported. You'll have to drop x360ce in the folder and set up your stick. I had some trouble doing that for some reason, but I just unchecked this passthrough option and bam. Instant 360 emulation.

Were there any specific files you used or did you just use that configuration .exe?

How it was made: http://cokane.com/hori_ikaruga.html

Midterms are done, and I have rewarded myself by purchasing Ikaruga. Only messed around with the options before playing a tiny bit of Stage 1. Was mostly disappointed that I couldn't get my PS3 stick to work, even with Joy2Key. No input received. Guess I'll have to stick with gamepad.

And from what I saw for TATE options, I am glad that the screen can be rotated either left or right. My rotating monitor back home only rotates one way, so this should be great once I get it back next month. In the meantime, I'll try putting my laptop on its side and playing it vertical that way.

Holy crap, that #1 Normal run on the leaderboards. Insane. Dude gets Max Chain 224 or so on Chapter 4.

Okay, finished Stage 1 just now with a B ranking. It's been years since I last played this game, and expected to have done way worse. Turns out I did just about the same as I did before. I can chain everything right up until the stage goes below the clouds, but after that I can't keep up. Guess it's time to start practicing again.

Also I want that art book, god dammit. Love Yasushi Suzuki's art style.

question for the truly hardcore ikaruga players out there, 99% of players won't care about this:

is the steam version the same as the xbox version, with all the (imo shitty) changes? (like mirrored stage 3 boss, ships at bottom of stage 4 showing up early, etc)
or is it an arcade-perfect port?

It's based on the X-box version, yes. It's an enhanced port of that port that changed things from the port of the arcade version.

a damn shame. also did some more research and saw that this version doesn't have online multi. to be fair the xbox version had shitty netcode, but they could have it much improved for steam. oh well, they already got my support with the xbox and dreamcast versions. think i'll pass on steam.

It's based on the latest arcade version (2013 NESiCAxLive release), which is based on the Xbox version.

So it's completely arcade accurate, though not in the way you want!

Well, I bought it.

I wasn't as good as I once was. But I'm pretty sure I'll get a pretty high score in the future. It's been fun and the game is really pretty on the PC.

After over 10 years of playing Ikaruga I still can't get past level 4 with 9 continues.
I think it's time for me to accept that fact and just go for a infinite continues run to see the ending.

What I wouldn't give to just have the RAWs of those in an absurdly high resolution

oh the terrible things I would do for that art

Same here man, same here.

So tempted to triple dip for this, but I hardly get any time to play on my PC at the moment :(

Stick with it, dude. It's all about memorising the levels. You'll get better, I promise you.

What settings do you guys recommend starting out with? I'm going Normal and No continues. Too harsh for a new scrub?

Guess I should watch some turorials. Not sure I fully understand how to maximise points with chains and absorbs(?)

Start with Easy, no suicide bullets changes the game significantly.

Add me, my Steam name is in my profile, just spent a few hours on release day trying to scrub all my rust off. But I'm shooting for my 1 Credit 40-50 Mil scores again like on the GC and XBLA. Thank god they fixed the issues with the XBLA port, now getting those scores won't seem as janky compared to the DC/GC versions.

Really wish Shinra's walk and the GC's slow-mo practice mode had made it in here for the definitive version, and a online co-op with proper netcode and VAC Protection. Only nitpicks, but hey, it's Ikaruga!

Played some more last night, way too tired and only slowly getting back in the game ... but damn, Ikaruga is still awesome.

Chapter 2 though...

IF you are playing for score and not just survival:

Kill enemies in sets of 3 to keep multiplying your score (called a chain). So kill 3 black, 3 white, 3 white, 3 black... In any order as long as its 3 of one color at a time. If you mess it up, you will lose your multiplier and start from scratch. You should see your chain counter on screen.

If i dont know an area well enough to kill in sets of 3, i sometimes wont even shoot because i dont want to drop my score multiplyer by breaking the chain. My level 2 replay is hilarious at the beginning. All i do is dodge.

Example - beginning of game:

Kill the first 6 waves of enemies as they come at you since from either side of the top of the screen since they are already in groups of 3s (6 at a time). Next, all of the small enemies will come down blanketing the top of the screen. Wait until the black and white enemies seperate from each other, then kill all of the black on the right, then all of the white on the left since the number of them is divisible by 3, maintaining your chain. That will get you roughly 400k right at the beginning.

May I have a cookie?
I need more friends who appreciate Ikaruga as well:

Or just search for Teknoman.

I always miss these add frenzies and still know no gaffers - http://steamcommunity.com/id/thatbrownfella/

Alright getting slowly better at this. Can do perfect runs on the first 2 sections of Chapter 1 pretty reliably now (not dropping the chain, destroying all ships and the whole shebang).
I'm now at 1.1mil for this chapter.

Here's my profile if you guys want to add me: http://steamcommunity.com/id/NIN5/

sent you guys friend requests on Steam (SharktopusGullnado)

Can it be played without Steam running? if not; any word on whether it will be released on a DRM free service?

Is the game moddable in any way?

No to all of those - there's only a handful of fully DRM-free games on Steam, Treasure hasn't mentioned GOG yet and game data is encrypted, so no mods in foreseeable future.

Of course, if you need a fully DRM-free version, Naomi/DC emulated with NullDC is always an option.

Thanks! That info helped! 877k now :) 2 hours in.

I'll get up in the millions eventually, just wait! ;)

I'd stick to it, personally. At the very least, not using continues is the fastest way to learn an arcade game.

Yeah, me too. It takes a bit of patience - as in, it could take you a lot of effort to get better - but in the end it is worth it.

This is how I'm doing it for now, at least. Normal difficulty, no continues. Then, once I've gotten the hang of 'not dying', I'll start to focus on chaining.
