Illegal Immigration: Where do you stand?

For example: Those escaping extreme poverty and/or politcal problems.

Welcome to Mexico and most of Central/South America.

To fix the problem of illegal immigration weed need to do two things-

1. Hire as many border patrol agents as it takes to secure the borders.

2. Go after the businesses that rely on the cheap, illegal labor.

I know a lot of people are saying "no one wants the jobs illegals take". I'd say you're wrong. The illegal immigration from Mexico has exploded in the last 25 years. Before that there was illegal immigration, but nothing on the scale it is today (estimates say it's probably over a million a year).

Before all the Mexicans came in to the country, businesses still managed to stay in business. There are people will to take those "crappy" jobs. The businesses may have to pay more to get their toilets scrubbed, but it would still happen.

Mexico has a stable government. Granted, many South and Central American countries do not -- I'd favor allowing those escaping political persecution and extreme poverty there as well.

Solution #1 is a "war on" illegal immigration that just won't work. It doesn't work for drugs and it won't work for illegals.

I agree with Solution #2. All workers in the U.S. should have the same rights, no matter if they have citizenship or not. Businesses that pay below a living wage, operate under sub-standard conditions and do not provide maditory benefits should be held accountable.

Better solution: Provide more and more effective aid to the countries the illegals are coming from, so they can support their familites from home.

This morning I had the misfortune to flick past faux news. They were discussing illegal immigration and the mexican border, and how illegal immigrants are bringing in TB and leperosy, and are committing murder and kidnappings, peddling drugs and could be terrorist threats.

As a hispanic and son of legal immigrants (and let me tell you, after dealing INS it's no wonder so many people do it illegally) I was more than a little offended with the tone of the story. It was like they were saying "OH NOES!!!111!!!! TEH BROWNIES R COMING!!! GET THEM!!!" Now I'd expect this out of faux news, but more and more this "get the brownies" tone is setting in, that's bordering on racism I fear. At times I think people are ok with legal immigrants because they're more likely to have been "whiteified".

Now I'm against illegal immigration. I figure if my family and I went through substantial pain to do it legally other people can as well. And as a tax payer I don't find it fair either. At the same time I do not put the blame entirely on the immigrants. If businesses would refuse to hire them, they would stop coming. I'm all for a migrant worker program and think that would satisfy a lot of people's issues. However, I feel that this issue is becoming more about race than about what's really at hand. Perhaps I'm being over sensitive though.

I'm afraid I don't understand. The Fox News story was about illegal immigrants bringing disease and crime, and you say you are against illegal immigration... yet you are offended? So it's OK for hispanics to be against illegal immigration but if a white person speaks out against it he is a racist?

What, did I wake up in a bad episode of Mind of Mencia? (redundant, I know. *ba-dum tcsh*)

Here's a call from the cluephone: they aren't talking about you.

Look, the manager is latino, everyone who works there is latino, and all the workers speak poor English(proven by numerous visits by me and many other people I know). I put in an application, don't get shit. My latino friend who speaks both languages, gets the job the next day. I'm sorry, but I will see racism in that. I wasn't latino and couldn't speak Spanish (even though the vast majority of ppl in the area are white English speakers), so I didn't get the job. Shit job it may be, but if a similar situation happened to any of you, you'd feel the same.

How many people are going to have to tell you that nothing racist happened here? If most of the staff speaks poor English, then it's a great idea for the manager to hire bilingual people to bridge the gap. He's not going to hire staff people that can't communicate with eachother behind the counter. On top of that, McDonalds gets so freakin many applications that most qualified people never get called back.

There's a difference between saying I'm against illegal immigration because I figure if I had to do legally others should and laws should be kept. And saying "Oh no! That hispanic is going to give you TB, kidnap your daughter after he rapes her, then steal your SUV which you can't afford because he took your job and give it to Osama Bin Laden. OMG FEAR THE BROWNIE!!!" Just a slight itty bitty little difference. Can you see it?
