Actually, short of violence, it very much is a 'pass to be an ass'. But you will no doubt be completely baffled to discover, most customers hate this bullshit too! They wouldn't be reduced to it if your company had half decent customer service capabilities.
I'm not going to blame the employees, because thier frustration is always a result of an inability to help the customer, and the resulting conflict. This is the fault of apple. With proper customer service, the situation at the apple store would have been completely different. But even if there had been a miscommunication or a mistake (they happen), there are so many ways that encounter could have gone where both parties would have left in a positive way. Even if he didn't get to do an exchange on the spot.
Your throwing somebody out of the store comment is so laughable, I don't even know where to begin. If you are still in retail, I suggest you get out before you lose it and wind up in jail or some shit heh.
I worked at EB for 3 years during high school and college. Every secret shopper score I ever received was perfect. Ive grown up in a family that has always been involved in high end retail, so I kinda know the ropes.
You make one mistake in thinking that people have to put up with bullshit at work. I never do. If someone is rude to me in my current workplace (which is not retail), or in my previous workplace, I calmly and politely inform them that their attitude is destroying my ability to help them. Most people realize I am being paid to help, and acting like an ass is making me not want to do my job. When they get this, we end up working together. If they dont get this, they are asked to leave. It always worked.
Your second mistake is in thinking that the customer is always king. Unfortunately, this is absolutely retarded thinking. You, as a customer, do not sign my paychecks. While I am paid to help you, my responsibility to is maintain the profitability of my company by adhereing to company policy and providing quality customer service. The policy can be bent by those with the power to bend it, but it doesnt have to be. People piss off customers all the time. No one gets fired for sticking to the company line.
Finally, as far as me going to jail, I kinda wish I was still in retail just to show you how you can be politely thrown the fuck out for being an asshat.
