Im really considering Gamefly

It seems like the best rental service (If Im wrong tell me), and it seems like a logical choice to sign up before the new gen. Is it safe to assume they'll have next gen games as of day one, and will the subscription still apply to those games? Provide the insite. I live in michigan if that changes anything

They're on the west coast, though I guess they have a shipping check agent closer to us now. Have you looked at your other options at all? There are services with deeper choices of games, etc. And closer shipping.

they'll have next-gen games. You may want to find a rental service based on the east coast. The only shipping center for Gamefly is Southern California, which is perfect for me (next day turn around), but I've heard it can be as much as 5 days for east coast. That means you order a game, it ships, 5 days later its there, then it takes 5 days to get back.

Do the free trial, if they offer it, or just get the cheap 1 game at a time deal and see if you like it.

Verify if they can do Fast Return in your area... if they can there is simply no reason not to use them... with Fast Return I mailed my stuff yesterday, they got confirmation from the post office that it was mailed and mailed out my next set today... I should get them either Wed or Thurs...

I used to have a Gamefly suscription and I live in Michigan. It took about 3 and sometimes even 4 days for them to ship/receive stuff to/from my location.

Well what about my other options? Any thoughts?

More than likely the answer is yes to your other questions. They were pretty quick to have PSP stuff when it came out, no reason to suspect they won't keep that up going in to next gen.

From my thread a year or so ago.

My little experiment with Gamefly is over for the time being. Overall the experience was a good one, but I can't wholeheartedly recommend the service to people not near the West Coast. It usually takes a week between the time I send a game back to them and the time I have the next game in my queue in my hands. This is due to the fact that they only have one distribution center that is located in California. Those of us in the Midwest and East Coast are more or less screwed.

The price was very reasonable. I paid $22/month for the 2 game package. The selection of games is excellent, and being able to keep games indefinetly means that you're basically renting games for about $11/month each. This is a great price for those of us who are too poor to buy all the games we want to play, or so busy that we can't predict a good time to rent a title from Blockbuster and be able to get our money's worth out of it. I saved a ton money on games I glad I didn't buy, and played a few games I wouldn't have bothered with if I didn't have the service.

The primary reason for cancelling my subscription is that my list of "gotta play that someday" games has been pretty much wiped clean, which was why I signed up for the service in the first place. So Gamefly did it's job. A secondary reason is that I find myself neglecting games that I've actually bought in favor of playing games that Gamefly sent me. Seeing an unopened Gamefly envelope sitting on top of my TV drives me crazy, it feels like a rental is going to waste and that I'm burning money. So this means I end up playing games I consider 'rentals' over games that I actually went out and bought. Doesn't make much sense to operate that way.

I had the service for 4 months and played the following games:

Katamari Damacy - Quirky fun, but a little too weird for me. I'm glad I just rented it.
Fable - $50 saved. Honestly the game isn't bad at all, but I found Morrowind much better.
Monster Hunter - Gave it a chance because of the GAF hype, and didn't care for it. $50 saved.
Burnout 3: Takedown - Sooooooo much fun. I probably wouldn't have given it a chance without the service. I'll probably buy this later.
Hot Shots Golf Fore! - I already own HSG3, so I'm glad I just rented this one. I found it hard to find a matchup online, so I have no real reason to buy it. $40 saved.
Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy - I only rented this because of the GAF hype, and found it decent but mediocre. Satisfying rental.
Champions of Norrath: Realms of Everquest - Decent rental, didn't really float my boat. Glad I didn't buy it.
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge - - Decent rental, didn't really float my boat.
Full Spectrum Warrior - $50 saved. What a boring POS game. This was almost a purchase for me before I decided to play it safe. Thank goodness I did.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay - HOLY AWESOMENESS. I'm going to have to buy this when it drops in price.
Ninja Gaiden - $50 saved. It's just not for me. It's too hard, and yeah I'm weaksauce but I don't enjoy replaying a level 75 times just to 'master' it. In NG it seems you have to know the game backwards and forwards just to advance. That, and ever since I turned 12 I just haven't been into the whole ninja thing.
Disgaea- Wow. Back in the day I was a huge fan of FFT, but I wasn't really going to give this guy a chance because I've sort of outgrown the whole 'googly eyed Japanese children' thing. I'm glad I tried it, I'll probably end up purchasing it.

OVERALL GRADE: B

I'll probably start the service again next summer, when my wish list has filled up again. I'll likely get a Cube next year and I won't want to buy any of the older titles just to get a feel for the system's library.

When I lived in Cleveland Ohio last summer my stuff would always come from gamefly overnight. It was awesome. :) Same with my returns to them.
I now live in nyc but haven't tried them here yet.

Anyone know of a gamefly type rental place in the SE (Florida)? Let me tell you Blockbuster is a piece of CRAP when it comes to renting good games. You may as well pound some nails into your penis.

My first month with Gamefly, I have played Disgaea, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Coded Arms, Spiderman 2 (PSP), Samurai Western, and Burnout Legends. To think that I only paid $18 for that first month, with two great games at a time, makes me simply shiver with glee.

I'm personally very happy with Gamefly. I live in Virginia, and with the fast return thing, my turn-around time is usually 4 days. Gamefly is great for checking out games to see if they're worth picking up, even later (which is what I primarily use it for).

All three consoles + GameFly = happy gamer, with lots of shelf space :)

Seriously, I'm pretty tired of collecting games I don't even play. Next gen, I'm going Gamefly only.

What's the Gamefly status on older/rare/niche games? Also, if I wanted to rent something like Donkey Konga do they offer an option to ship the controller as well? I'm thinking no, but I want to be sure.

I doubt they would ship the controller. You'd have to play it with the regular GC thing or buy a $9.99 set of bongos. As far as rare games: pretty much anything short of Rez is easily available. But they only have this gen, no Dreamcast and no PSX.

I have been happy with the selection, but unhappy with the turnaround time. I live in Virginia Beach, VA, and we don't seem to have the Fast Return here. I got an email saying that it was available, but I've never once had anything shipped out before they got it. If I send a game back on Saturday, I MIGHT get the new game the following Saturday. It's not a bad service, but when I hold of on mailing them and take games with me on flights to California, just so I can stick them in the mail near LAX, then we've got a problem.

I do not recommend GameFly unless you live on the West Coast. I had a trial subscription and the turnaround from Alabama (time for me to ship a game to them and them send a new one back to me) was ten days. That's entirely unacceptable.

How do I know about fast turnaround option... do they have a list of the places avaliable?

No you're going to have to call and ask them.

I highly recommend Gamefly.

I have been using the 1 game deal ($13.95) for about a year now (I'm on the East Coast) and the fast return stuff is awesome. Usually, from the time I put my game in the mailbox to the time I get my new game is less than 5 days. I also love their deals they have about once a month.

I picked up NanoBreaker for $10 with free shipping. Came in mint condition with packaging and instructions. The game sucked monkey nuts but I turned around and sold it to EB Games for $14 and made a profit. (OMGWTFLOL) I even picked up Sudeki for $7.00 with free shipping and sold it for $15 and made a profit.

Lots of fairly new games that would cost $30 used at EB or somewhere can be had for $20 at Gamefly. For example Star Wars Episode III for PS2 is $44.99 at EB Games but it only costs $19.99 at Gamefly.

1 Game out
(Save 10%) First 2 months
$24.95 ($1.00/month thereafter)

WHAT! 60 dollars a year, does that make sense? Also, is that 25 dollars at once or 1 month 25 the next 25 and then from then on its a buck?

I just joined intothegame.com because of their 1 game, 10 dollars a month, 21 day trial period. Check it out, but I cant say anything good or bad about them yet since i just signed up

So, how are they, and most importantly, where do they ship from?

To try and keep somewhat afloat in the sea of new releases this fall, I just signed up with free trials to Gamefly and the previously mentioned gamesforrent.com since they're in NJ. Their (GFR) website is pretty cheezy and most newish games seem to have a wait time. Not lookin' good so far... we'll see.

With the offtopic netflix thread here I felt like this one should get bumped. I signed up with them a couple of weeks ago and the turn around time is atrocious. I'm going to call them today about the Fast Returns option. One thing I do like about them is there great used prices with free shipping.

I have FastReturn in my area, but the damn post office seems to only scan half of the games I send out.

Living in Florida, that really makes a difference...takes about three days to get out to Cali and three days for a new game to arrive. With FastReturn not always working, I'll probably be cancelling my subscription.

I e-mailed gamefly re: fast return but can't locate their response.

Can someone list the steps needed to enable the feature

I use GF, and it's worth it if you don't sit on games for a long ass time (like me).

Damn I'd like to know too. What is their customer service number? I really HATE it when companies/websites hide their customer service number or don't post it at all. Very unprofessional.

Gamefly won't be able to tell you if your post office has Fast Return or not. Basically you just have to find out when you return a game.

I've been with Gamefly for a month now, and I'm finding the whole thing mediocre. S'not bad, but it ain't no Netflix, that's for sure. They could be doing this A LOT better than they are. Turn around time is slow, if the game next in your queue is out it takes a whole new day before they move onto your second choice (which is the biggest bullshit thing about 'em), their games in stock are okay but could be better, and they need more than one shipping center.

If Netflix ever offered games, Gamefly would sink quickly. But as it stands now, there just aren''t any better options that I know of.

Here's the timeline of my Gamefly trial so far.

Monday Oct 31 - Fire Emblem GC and Mario Tennis ship
Thursday Nov 3 - Mario Tennis arrives
Saturday Nov 5 - Fire Emblem arrives

Pretty terrible, but I still might hang on to it just for a month or two to sample 360 games.

EDIT: I'm in Minnesota.

EDIT2: Wow, Gamerang has a center in MN. I might cancel my 10 trial of Gamefly and try that.

Too bad Gamerang's trial is one game only.

I just really hope these places get adequate quantities of 360 games.

Ugh, the Gamerang website is fucking terrible. It's only displaying 15 Gamecube games. If I click on a genre I can't see any games. It seems like it's only showing upcoming games. Half of their 360 games are games that wont even come out until 6 months to a year (wtf is 2 Days to Vegas?), they're missing a lot of launch games like King Kong and Ridge Racer 6.

hmm...ridge racer is on my choice list...

Gamefly is good.

Don't be discourage by naysayers....Don't be discouraged.

Just do business with them....I think they've shorten the delivery time....they implemented a new system - so that you could return the game and then rent another faster than normal...

I had problems with switching from one game to another, there seemed to be a long gap between current game, and the next game I wanted....I suggested to them that they shorten them....and they responded to it two months after I made the suggestion.

They've been more reliable, and is very considerate when you have a problem...

And they seem consistant with new games....They're available as soon as the game releases, or shortly thereafter.

GameFly is good. Rent from them.

And I used the two game plan for the summer...Couldn't be happier. I plan to get back into the foray when I get my new job.....I plan to upgrade to 3 games 30 bucks a month.

I guess my experience was good because I live in California.

Ok I got this email from Gamefly,

You do not need to sign up to participate in the FastReturn™ service. If you are an active customer and the return mailer in your possession has a PLANET code (barcode), you are eligible for the service. Once you place a game back in the mail to return to us and the regional U.S. Postal Service processing plants scan the mailer, we will receive confirmation and begin processing the next title in Your GameQ.

What the hell is a planet code (Barcode)? I've got the return envelope but I"m not sure what I should be lookin for.

They should get back to you in the next afternoon of the night that you saw all that....but it should take you a day.

I know this, because I qeued Darkwatch the night before I got it into the "now shipping" box....that afternoon I was a tad bit surprised because the game was on the "short wait" list..And a day or two passed, I got the game.

I see "New" in Battlefield....The best thing you should've done, is moved that to the #1 spot to buy your way into the top of their list, and they'll respond more. The less likely a game is on the "watch" list, the more likely "short wait" means squat.

My strategy in the three moth of service with GF, was that I constantly changed the order of the games I had on my list. CONSTANTLY, and no matter when....they got back to my account pronto, no matter what.

Anyone can help please?

Ok here's the thing. There is a barcode that is on your envelope that your post office is suppose to scan.. the problem however is that this is wholly up the post office employee who is process mail... I'd been getting FastReturn stuff for a few weeks and then about a week ago it stopped.. I emailed Gamefly and this was their response:

The U.S. Postal Service does not have the scanning equipment in every processing plant in the US, therefore, the FastReturn™ system is not available in all areas, at all times. The reason FastReturn may work once and then not again is because the postal employee who is processing the mailers is not running the games through the AFSM100 flat sorter like they are supposed to for FastReturn to work properly.

So even if you have FastReturn in your area like I do you can get hosed by an employee who isn't doing their f'n job.

Big surprise there. I'm going to try mailing my stuff back from my job here in DC and see what happens....

So do all gamefly envelopes have them regardless of location? I thought you had to be a certain distance before they put that FastTrack barcode on the envelope. I'm pretty sure I qualify since i'm on the other end of the country.

uh ....distance has nothing to do with whether you qualify it's a case of whether your particular post office has the specific scanning equipment and communications link to get the info back to gamefly(I have no idea what the communications part is composed of).

Ok well that sucks since it's obviously not fast for me with my 10 day turnarounds. Well I guess I could try different post offices. Thanks for the help.
