Why?, did your attention span run out?
Playing dumb wont get you anywhere...

He stopped reading there because you suggested that sony and microsoft would (literally) kill for Nintendo's talent. They'd "literally" kill other people in cold blood would they? If you'd have said "figuratively" however, he may have had enough respect for what you've got to say to actually finish it.

But would Sony care enough to give Nintendo a sweetheart deal is the question. And I think the answer to that is a resounding No.

Plus the PS2's image is built on GTA. Championing Mario on the same system would at the very least confuse consumers.

I suppose you've never heard of diversity. The PS2 lineup is quite diverse and this is a GOOD thing. It doesn't confuse consumers.. where do you come up with that crap?

Nintendo is a much better fit to partner with Microsoft next-generation, anyway, for several reasons, actually (I'm not saying it's going to happen, but if it did, I wouldn't be all that surprised):

1) Sony is now an even bigger threat to Nintendo's profitability with the release of PSP which competes directly with their cash cow Gameboy handheld line. This is in addition to Sony's wiping the floor with Nintendo in the home console arena already. Nintendo, if at no other time in it's history, is very afraid right now. Plus, there's the whole animosity factor between the two companies, while Microsoft has been pretty cordial towards Nintendo in past dealings.

2) Microsoft and Nintendo are like 2 different, yet complimentary pieces of a jigsaw puzzle... Microsoft is getting strong in the west, while remaining weak in the east and Nintendo is still respected in the east, but losing market share in the west. Microsoft's software caters to the 18+ market while Nintendo's is skewed (like it or not) to the younger market for the most part. In short, Microsoft is trying to grab marketshare through increasing it's youth appeal and east appeal and Nintendo is trying to do the oppposite! Nintendo is very strong in the handheld market, which Microsoft has no presence and both companies are looking to do better next round in the lucrative home console market against Sony. Microsoft is working extremely hard to court 3rd party developers/pubs and build a strong online community (both of which Nintendo doesn't do very well right now). Microsoft's also trying to build long-term franchises, which Nintendo has already done.

3) The Xenon hardware, from what we've heard so far, sounds incredibly like a Nintendo made piece of hardware, but only juiced up even further. It sounds efficient and cost-friendly (in the long term) and yet still very powerful. Microsoft has changed their stance from earlier this generation from being about "More Powerful Hardware" to "it's all about the software" which sounds...eerily like Nintendo's company line. Microsoft is using parts from ATI and IBM, just like Nintendo is. Most companies that work with Microsoft tend to speak very favoribly of them (it's the companies that compete with Microsoft that really hate their guts).

I've heard of diversity and I've also heard of brand focus. The flagship game of the PS2 is the GTA series. There is no doubt about that, Jak 3, Sly Cooper et all don't get the hype and don't get the attention. They're there, sell enough to make a decent profit, help in creating a well rounded game library, and that's it.

Now enter a heavyweight influence like the Mario series. Now Sony could get Nintendo in bed with them and get a Mario game for the PS2.. but what do they do with it? The more marketing they lavish on it the more it takes away from the GTA image that the PS2 has enjoyed so far.

Ge-man got it right. Nintendo games just are not compatible with Sony image. And for Sony image is everything.

Sony can be a threat to Nintendo's profitability and their own at the same time xs :). If the PSP takes off and marginalises

From the looks of things, Sony won't have enough manufactured to see if it will take off. You can't marginalize something with hype, despite what still-bitter Dreamcast fans will tell you. But the second part of the equation is that unlike Microsoft, Sony can't afford to bleed indefinitely.

People often speak of the DS as some kind of knee-jerk reaction to the PSP. That accusation - however unverified as it may be - is fine. Well, it's fine as long as I can say that it's become terribly obvious that by releasing the PSP this year in Japan, Sony's bitten off more than they can chew, and it may have a long-lasting impact on how well the PSP does.

In any case the PSP is the biggest threat Nintendo's handheld line has ever really faced. It certainly means the end of defacto Gameboy domination and that in and of itself cuts into revenues. And make no mistake Sony is in this thing to win. As soon as manufacturing costs come down (and they will, as they do), then Sony can get back to trying to pull off their steamroller of hype manouever in the handheld market.

Ah, this old gem. Because Sega, Nokia, NEC, Neo-Geo, and Atari don't count.

Also, everyone is in it to "win", it's a non-point. The question is whether the resources are there to do it. Microsoft has the money to just keep going, Nintendo has the experience, and Sony has the technology. The problem, which a lot of people seem to want to ignore, is that Sony can't play the same game Microsoft can with manufacturing costs, and they can't instantly squeeze profit out of their handheld like Nintendo, because Sony wants more power instead.

Powerful, Portable, Cheap. You're only allowed to pick two.
