Images that represents next-generation

I am working in a article that makes me think a lot about next generation. I´m really tired until a full day of work on it, but I would like to ask you, if you want, to post picture that in your opinion reflects next generation. I am not talking about tech discussions or possible market shares, just images that represents your idea of next generation, no matter if they are tech demos, renders, games screens, eben art... exposing your own idea of why do you choose that pictures and what aspect of it you would like to see.

Sorry if you find the thead useless, worthless or you are already boring of next generation theads, is just an idea.

For example, this:

Mist.jpg

It´s art from the page of Mistwalker, it reflects some of the things I would likes as use of color, lot of details, complex enviroment...

and this

noir.jpg

Not the best image, but all of you that have seen this piece of animatrix will know what I mean. I want creative uses of cel-shaded renders, the most near to see real anime in consoles has been with Wind Waker (Dark Chronicle, and Dragon Quest VIII have other great graphical virtues, but they are one step down with animation, specially the facial ones). But I want creative uses of cel-shaded, not just coloured graphics, but creative things from a visual point like that black & white graphics.

If I see a good answer will try to post more ideas. Hope you like it.

I dunno, I think the images that were posted a little while back (from EA, I guess?) of what the next generation of games will look like were much more realistic than what you posted. Of course the only way EA will get the players (in the Madden shot) to look as good as the mockup will be to hire Visual Concepts' modelers. Madden's always had crappy modelling (in comparison).

From EA, yes, but that is not the point.

It´s not about realism, it´s about your own opinion of what you would like to see. I don´t care if I can play Winning Eleven 10 with photorealistic graphics. For me it´s about other things.

But that is just because is my opinion and I try to expose with some images. Now, you can search for that picture you are speaking of Madden Teaser and put it here, then write why do think that image represents next generation.

For example:

MaddenTeaser.jpg

"I think this image represents what I want for next generation, almost photorealistic images, superb animation and feeling like I was playing a true football games. I would like to see real facial expresions and best model for players"

Something like that

Time and cost trumps technology. Whether or not images are as good as these depends way more on budgetary concerns and dev time.

Maybe not the whole movie, but I think next gen could achieve some of the scenes in AC based on these screens:

I want refinement! Visual polish.

Time and money are going to be more limiting than anything hardware-related.

I had no idea AC was so unimpressive. In those screens anyway.

The closest thing i've seen i think that looked like a game i'd be playing in a few years was Appleseed 2004. While far too advanced in parts, I really expect alot of cel shaded games to look very similar to that film.

Those FF: AC scenes don't look too far off either, I actually wouldn't be suprised if a PS3 demo was a recreation of a scene such as those.

I agree with DaCoco though, it's all about polish.

Check out this screen from PP:WW:

Now that's an absolutely gorgeous game. Sharp textures, good modelling, nice lighting and lots of details.

However, the way the wall on the left joins the floor and the the flat rivets on...whatever that is on the right are jarring. I just want things like that fixed.

I would be happy if developers did a complete 180 from the heading they've taken at the moment, away from "photorealism" and emulation of real life. I want interactive entertainment to take me to another world crafted purely by the developer's imagination, where my connection to that world if fluid and intuitive, and not limited by corporeal attributes or marketing requirements.

I'd like to see something like http://muse.com come unto fruition, frankly.

I want games that look real. I'm not about the cartoony look, but I'm sure next gen will bring games like that to life as well. Give me better looking racers, fighters, sports, fps, and action games. By the time X2 hits I should have a 50 + inch TV and I already have a beast of a surround sound system to go with it. For me it's all about realism and feeling like you are actually a part of it. I want the realistic modeling to compliment the audio and video setups I'll have when X2 launches.

my biggest thing for next gen is for developers to actually start taking advantage of the texturing ability of these systems

when it comes to 3d images texturing is so damn important to making something look nice and I dont think enough developers realize just how important it is

Hopefully, the next generation of Dynasty Warrior, Kessen or Romance of Three Kindgoms will look like this.

I can only dream...

Personally, I'm tired of the same effects. Seems only PC games 'Wow' me now as I've become familar w/ feature sets and technical tricks.

I want to see something I have never seen before. The more 'realistic' things become, the more they cost and the longer they take. I'd hate for that to be the trend followed for the next half a decade. All the small devs will be bought up and there will be far fewer development houses.

What you see in 3D Mark 2005 and Unreal Engine 3 is probably a good representation of Next Gen console capabilities. Expecting more just sets people up for dissapointment and I don't know why so many people expect so much anyway (besides being gullible sheep and buying into the hype of it all I suppose).

Hmm... So going by that, the XBOX could do 3DMark 2002 with no problem, right?

some of u got some pretty high expectations.

that aren't likely to be met, not this gen at least, and certainly not in most games

A few may come close, but their budgets will be in the >$25Million dollar range and will take upwards to 3 years to make. How many of those caliber games can the industry produce over the next 5 years?

15 or 20 per year? Spread across 12 months and multiple platforms... It doesn't look pretty.

my expectations are reasonable. not out of this world. I don't expect movie-class CG in games. something more like lowend videogame CG like Tekken 4 or Gradius V or PS1's FF8
(not Onimushi 3 or FF-X/X-2)

And these games with great graphics will take twice as long to make.

The shift from the 1-2 year cycle to the 3-4 year cycle for the really good ones.

This will probably mean that Xbox 2, PS3, and GC 2, will more than likely go far beyond the five year console cycle. Think 6-8 years.

why the assumption that great graphics = huge dev. timescales?

Sure, bigger worlds, more complex interactions will do that, but surely most of this level of character detail is being done this generation for cutscenes. If they aren't optimised for next-gen realtime, then adjust your artist workflow to make them optimised, then use the same artwork for renders and realtime stuff.

You could make a (flimsy) argument that says next gen art will be easier than this gen because you don't need two very different models.

that is a possibility. it might also take longer to develop next-next generation consoles (Xbox3-N6-PS4) that show a huge leap from the coming generation.

Because a few cutscenes = a lot less than a whole game. You might save time on characters, but doing all environments will require a shitload more work. Just a guess.
