Improved Switch 1 games on Switch 2

Splatoon 3 looks great now with today's update, 4K in almost all modes (looks like dynamic res or 1440p in the hubs, which are now at 60 FPS instead of 30).

Comparisons :

Some gameplay (MP, campaign, expansion) :

I don't think there's many Splatoon fans here, but it's a massive difference when you see the changes in person. This along with the free new content was a nice way to honor the 10th anniversary.

Super Mario Odyssey looks so stunning on Switch 2 when connected to my LG C3 OLED TV that it is the game I've been (re)playing the most by far (30+ hours!) since I got the console last week. I was enjoying that classic so much that I didn't get around to actually playing Mario Kart World until the third day after I got my Switch 2 and then it was only for a couple of hours before I went back to Odyssey. Image quality is so much better now that it looks like a new game and although it still suffers from some aliasing, it is far less distracting than before. Better still this update was totally
I don't know if I recalled it wrong but when I booted the game, I didn't see much of a difference than when I played back in 2017, still looks stunning, fantastic gameplay and flawless performance

I'd like to add that even games that don't get patches look better because of the 4k output. Games that use to look dull on my oled now have deep vibrant color.

Man, I've been trying out some demos and...it's a friggin' shame boys that many good games are gonna be locked to S1 profile performance for eternity...

Demon X machina is a cool game but that 30fps...I can't anymore, same as Hyrule AOC, same as Astral chain, same as Fire emblem warriors, same as...you get my drift.

Also, it isn't only about the framerate but the IQ also, some of these games, on a 55'' TV are just..."ooof" to look at after 5 years playing on an XSX and PS5.

I really like the console so far but man, knowing that some exclusive, not available anywhere else games are not gonna get patched just makes me sad.

At this point, I'd even take full priced remasters but, don't think that smaller companies like Marvellous Inc. or even Platinum games would even bother and certainly not Nintendo.

In hindsight, Xbox's BC program where it actually improved/enhanced many games with higher framerates and/or resolutions was a really nice thing to have...

Yeah that seems to be downside of Switch 1 BC catalog. You are just working from such a suboptimal base level quality that's not going to look great blown up. Even a PS4 game on PS5 is going to minimum quality that is passable on a larger screen.

The only way to rectify it somewhat would be having Switch 1 docked mode available in Switch 2 handheld mode and playing those games exclusively like that.

Before the Switch 2 came out, Mario Wonder received a random update. No idea if it is Switch 2 related or not but the textures looked better to me
It was Switch 2 related but it only mention gameplay : https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/63384/

Latest update: Ver. 1.0.2 (Released June 3, 2025)

The following updates have been made when playing the game on Nintendo Switch 2:

General

  • Several adjustments have been made to improve gameplay on Nintendo Switch 2.

I've been digging through my S1 stuff too, but mostly 1st party and on TV so I haven't had much time to see any handheld problems.

SMW64 and Bowsers fury look and run wonderfully, Super Mario RPG, Smash, Pikmin 4 - all run great and look good on TV. Mario Superstars was ok on S1 anyway, but Super Mario Galaxy seems more stable - it's difficult to remember how it was on S1 though.

I think it's been great with non - patched stuffed in general.

Everything is just smoother now whether it's loading times or frame rates / res or whatever.

However, the most interesting thing has been the NSO library. I remember dabbling before with the N64 stuff but finding it a little tedious to play due to performance and loading times.

But on S2 it feels smoother and running at a more reliable FPS (or it may just be better control response) and the same extends to the GameCube titles. So now I'm quite excited to see what they bring to the NSO library.

XCOM2 looks much better to me on S2 - it's actually playable! But it's still got the problem that after a while the framerate tanks necessitating a restart of the game.

Capcom Fighting collection and 20th anniversary run well, 8bitdo arcade stick and S1 pro controller still work too.

Those are about the only 3rd party games I tested apart from a couple of shmups and Outrun which all ran nicely of course.

I mostly get JRPGs on switch if I get full price third party at all, and I haven't gone back to those yet.

Anyone with Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes on switch want to see if it improves? I got it at launch and it was a mess.
I just compared it on Switch 2 game updated to ver 1.0.7 using the "Graphics Mode" in game. I noticed the following on Switch 2
Frame rate (pacing) shudders are gone
Frame rate higher with no dips
Load times are noticeably reduced.
Access to menu (and switching between menu "tabs") is faster

I played a fresh game on both system up to the first dungeon (Northern Runebarrows).

The only way to rectify it somewhat would be having Switch 1 docked mode available in Switch 2 handheld mode and playing those games exclusively like that.
I keep hearing this and if it really is that easy, don't we think Nintendo will eventually add this option to improve S2 backwards compatibility? Maybe if garmes jarnalists could ask these questions it would help speed this up?

What about my Xenoblade games?
sorbet-kingdom-past.gif
Supposedly Xenoblade Chronicles X even had that hidden 60 FPS mode that people speculated was related to Switch 2.

Pls Nintendo don't forget about us

I'm bummed that Pikmin 4(any of them really but 4 is the latest) hasn't received any updates. Played the Pikmin 4 demo and it's still the locked 30fps with the 900p resolution(docked). On a 65 inch, 4k/hdr tv, it doesn't look
so great anymore.

These games absolutely scream for that 60fps/4k/dlss upgrade

Another bummer was Astral Chain. Highly underrated action game. It's still stuck with the dynamic resolution(720-900p) at 30fps.

Are you sure you don't have HDR set for all games? That's like auto HDR from Xbox so less accurate colors

no the og switch only outputs in 1080 and the switch 2 will give a 4K output even if the game is rendered lower. A lot of tvs (and my lg oled) tend to flatten colors when upscaled from 1080p.

Mushroom Wars 2 hasn't even booted up any any Switch device in my home for at least 3 years. (Og launch Switch, OLED, or either of my kids Switch Lites)
Works just fine on Switch 2.

I don't know if already told, but today I tried Ion Fury on Switch 2 and run like a dream. Perfect 60fps, but remember that you need to input the Konami code to unlock the framerate, or you'll be stuck to 30fps (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A).

I did not know this. Thanks for the heads-up.

I really hope yoshis crafted world and pokken get an update, those games deserve a second chance with resolutions higher than 540p

uhm... why does this say 1440p upscaled to 4K with DLSS? that's clearly not the case... and also not possible given the game, but that's another topic.

so yeah, I'd not take anything that channel puts out as gospel. they clearly have no real idea what they're doing

EDIT: yeah, very easy to pixel count their still shots, no "upscaling" and clearly no DLSS. in fact it seems to use a very simple spatial AA, which makes it extremely easy to find reasonably raw edges to count the steps.
seems to be dynamic 4K. in 3 shots of the normal levels I got 4K, and in 2 shot in the hub I counted 1944p and 2016p

sadly, the video quality isn't good enough to get any decent edges during fast motion to see how low the dynamic res can go. while standing still and nothing is happening it is 4K tho

This sounds so fake it must be true 😅

lol... every dev should do this btw. if they don't want to expose options like these to the layman because they are scared of bad user reviews when they are used... just hide them in a cheat code!

gimme FPS unlock cheats in every fucking game please!!!

I am still so happy that the Bioshock devs were forward thinking enough to have a vsync toggle in the old console versions, as now you have the choice between the original and the remaster, as the remaster changes aren't to everyone's tastes... yes, they are still low res, but they now run at 60fps without any issue.

That's what I thought when I saw it, people really think DLSS is a silver bullet for everything related to graphic on Switch 2, it isn't and no Nintendo game is using it so far

Breath of the Wild looks just ok. Higher res but the amount of jaggies is distracting.
Tears of the Kingdom in the other hand looks phenomenal. Super clean.

Just booted up Forgotten Memories on Switch 2 and HOLY CRAP. This has to be The most impressive indie Switch 1 game on Switch 2!

Here's a screenshot I took using "auto upload" to My Nintendo. (Neat New Switch 2 feature in the settings, if you didn't know)

Yes, that's correct, the game (supposedly) runs at 120fps. It runs incredibly smooth and I have a 120hz TV but not the software to verify fps. If anyone here has this game and can verify fps that would be great

every game should do this, EVERY, its good to finally see someone doing it, give us options and not just perf or fidelity, great job from this dev.

Anyone try Trails through Daybreak II? I played the first one on Switch and had a decent time with it, haven't got the second yet but I've heard it was running pretty rough on Switch 1. Can't find anything online.

Well, it certainly looks good, how does it play though ? this was a mobile game, right ?

PS : these types of games IMO are only for when you have the console docked, too much visual information/clues/items on screen to be played in portable mode - I had the same impression with the portal, couldn't play GOW Panderok on it due to losing important cues/items etc

Edit : this is only 10 bucks on the eShop ? Fuck, wish I hadn't bought Capcom beat'em up bundle 10 mins ago for 10 bucks (incredibly barebones ports).
