In this thread we will make crazy, unsupported E3 2005 predictions

Uh, no. The implications of a Nintendo online network are *huge*.

You can't just look at Animal Crossing, think about what it could also mean for other Nintendo franchises in the future -- Pokemon, Pikmin, Star Fox, F-Zero, Mario Kart, Advance Wars, etc.

That's far bigger than backwards compatibility. Backwards compatibility is a nice little bonus that was some what expected anyway.

I disagree. First, I fucking despise Animal Crossing. But that's beside the point.

It's not important because everyone was already doing online for YEARS. Nintendo is playing catch-up, which is nice... but essentially non-news, since we already knew they were finally going to do the damn thing. Every single indication we had pointed to this, so being surprised by it is hilarious.

However, because of all the absurd news about Revolution being this insanely radical device, the idea of BC was much less expected. It says a lot about the new system, much more than online.

So we going to have to disagree. You're talking about it from a fans perspective, which is nice. "FINALLY ALL MY FAVORITE GAMES R ONLINE WOO."

But from a "just how big was the news" perspective, I'm going to have to give it a 5/10.

Bad analogy. It was nothing like that. Firstly, because it wasn't entirely unexpected. And secondly, because it's not something that gives it an Advantage over PS3 or Xenon.
I have to agree and disagree with you.

Bad analogy, yes. Big news? Yes and no. No because, like you said, it wasn't entirely unexpected.

Yes? You think Online Nintendo games isn't an advantage over PS3 or Xenon? I don't know, but I think an online Smash Bros, online Mario Kart, online Pikmin, online Fire Emblem/Advance Wars, are all games that would give Nintendo an advantage over PS3 or Xenon. The mere ability of wifi, not a true advantage, but the exclusive Nintendo online software would be an advantage.

Amir0x said:

I think we better, yeah, because I thought backwards compatibility was the biggest "No shit" part of the event. Especially given that we knew the Revolution was basically going to be another IBM/ATi project pretty early on.

You're thinking about this from a hardline Nintendo fan perspective, but you're not looking at the larger picture. Nintendo games alone have always sold to Nintendo fans. Nintendo games ONLINE is not going to be any more of a draw than the trillion games Sony and Microsoft have online for PS3 and Xenon.

For you, yes, you're a Nintendo fan. For me, yes. I love and adore most Nintendo games. But as an advantage? There is none. Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 will have tons of high profile games online, the very same games that have always outsold the big Nintendo games by droves.

But I'm guessing that it's just going to be GTA going exclusive to the XBox

Yeah, exclusive game announcements on any console get a big yawn from me. I own all of the major consoles. Plenty of us do, so who cares? I don't care if Final Fantasy moves to the XBox. Big deal, I'll play it on whatever machine it's on. If this is just an exclusive announcement I think I'll put my hundred dollars towards a wireless router.

I'd like to be blown away, though, so I'm hoping it's something more than that.

True. I guess I also see an advantage in that, while this might sound backwards to some people - Nintendo can talk about online, for their customers, as a new thing. It's something they've never offered before.

For Sony and MS, they've already tried to make the sell, some faired better than others on the sale. Online for these two isn't anything new, but for Nintendo, it is. Which, is only because they didn't get off their asses with Gamecube.

Still, I think the ability to talk about online as a new feature for Nintendo is definitely an advantage, especially in that it's going to be free. That alone, compared to MS's strategy is huge.

Actually, I think Nintendo entering the online arena will encourage not only more online development for their platforms, but more online development in general from Japan as well. I'm expecting Konami, Bandai and Namco to also finally take the plunge now too, with Capcom, Square Enix, Sega and SCEJ greatly expanding their online projects and R&D. Online as pretty much a no-show this gen from the Japanese side of gaming after DC folded and FFXI floundered.

Being free also comes at a price. Infrastructure is VERY important.

OMG! GTA 4 signed to 1 year exclusive!

To sit there and hint about (Assuming you actually know something) is IGNish.

Create an alias account from an untraceable IP. Give the info to someone who can post it.

But be like Johnny Nightrain and spill the actual info, or else just keep it quit and not hype it.

Amixr0x,

OK. It's time to **** or get off of the pot.

AFAIK, you've NEVER had any insider news, so I'm assuming that you're just attention whoring pretending to know something you don't. And when the inevitable BIG announcement does happen at E3, of which there should be a ton), you'll claim that YOU KNEW IT ALL ALONG.

Now, I'm going to give you the slightest benefit of the doubt, because I certainly haven't read every post you've ever made. Please point me to ANYTHING you've ever posted that gives us the slightest reason to believe that you're not completely talking out your ass.

We're not playing this game. This is not a personal slandering contest. The straightforward answer is that it might not happen at E3, I don't happen to have THAT news. Blimblim says it's not, and he knows more than I do. So you listen to him. But when it does happen, I'm not going to say anything because it will speak for itself.

I'm speaking in terms of the games.

The implications of Nintendo finally opting to support online will reach into 2007, 2008, 2009, etc. as future iterations of many of their franchises embrace the online technology.

No one seriously will give a crap about backwards compatibility beyond the first six months of the Revolution launch. The GameCube isn't even that successful of a hardware platform.

Online implimentation into franchises like Mario Kart, Pokemon, Pikmin, etc. I think will yield almost as large of a gameplay leap as the jump from 2D to 3D for a certain number of these franchises. It could dramatically change the nature of the Nintendo community as a whole too.

Specifically in terms of replay value, its friggin' huge.

I mean yeah, some of the news leaks prior to GDC made Iwata's announcement more anti-climactic, but this isn't a soap opera where the point is to suprise people with some twist out of left field.

Semi dream list/semi expectations

- Nintendo's Revolution unveils it's machine with similar graphics to Xenon. The catch being it's actually a transformer and when turned inside out it is the Xenon! Miyamoto to present the first transformation. Both the Xenon and Nintendo transformer version of the new Xbox system will be released 4th quarter '05

- Shenmue III announced for Xenon and fans of the game die from joy

- PS3 floors the crowds with the best graphics.

- New Madden game only playable on PS3 at the moment

- New Mario shown. Looking spack-tacular. Nintendo lovers have a group fap fest. And hell, it'll be so good I'll join in. Oh yeah, it'll be on Revolution, seperate from Xenon actually. That's a dream :)

- Sonic shown for Revolution with better graphics than Mario. War begins anew with Mario vs. Sonic

- Virtua Fighter 5 is playable on PS3 with insane graphics. Sega steals the show as a developer and emmerges as a huge force.

- Some massive war game with tons and tons of characters on screen will be shown for PS3.

- Twisted Metal has a new game on PS3, flooring explosive effects.

- Grand Theft Auto 4 releases concept art/few pics for next gen. People around the world fap at the thought of GTA done with amazing next gen graphics

- Ridge Racer sets the new standard for racing games on PS3.

- Wrestling game will be shown on some next gen system.

- Xenon has Fable 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, and a few games planned for PS2, Xbox 2, and GC with improved graphics but not too impressive. Maybe 1 or 2 extremely improved though.

- I stay home from school and sit at the pc watching every second of live footage I can get. Actually buy IGN insider and whatever the hell gamespot offers in a desperate attempt at information.

As for a crazy prediction ... I'll throw this one out there ...

Nintendo and Apple will sign a deal regarding products in the portable market (i-Pod and Game Boy).

Dude, this post is just a personal slant on why you're happy about the news, it has absolutely no real-world relevance. "Almost as large of a gameplay leap as the jump from 2D to 3D for certain number of these franchises?" Well, what can I say? Welcome to the 21st century, Nintendo. I'll be sitting over here playing all the games with the "almost as big of a leap from 2D to 3D" gameplay via XBL2 and PlayStation CONNECT. Then after I'm done, I'll play the Rev games and say "oh shit. I've been doing this since the dawn of the internet era!"

Jesus Tittyfucking Christ, this thread is about crazy ridiculous E3 predictions, not another venue for Nintendo fanboys to circle jerk about Revolution and DS Wi-Fi. There's another thread about that, so use it.

It doesn't matter if its been done before, I mean there was analog control before Super Mario 64 and 3D polygonal graphics before the Playstation. Everyone knows Nintendo takes a long time in some cases to embrace certain technologies, but it shouldn't negate the significance when it happens, because after all maybe you have played online games for 10 years, but when was the last time you played Mario Kart or Pikmin online?

Anyways, I've said my piece, and also contributed an E3 prediction, so I'll leave it at that.

There's so many differences between your example and the reality of THIS situation that I cannot believe you're serious.

But Yup, take this elsewhere :lol :lol

I hope Rare ends up showing Perfect Dark Zero, ir whatever it will be named at this point. The new Conker game looks amazing graphically. I wonder how they will do on Xenon.

Sounds like everyone else in the history of video game message boards who have claimed to know some HUGE announcement ahead of time but were really just full of shit. Thanks for clearing that up.

GTA exclusively on Xenon would be a massive coup. Methinks it'd be timed, though, ala the current situation, but with Sony and MS switched. Unless MS are buying Take2.

If GTA becomes a Xenon exclusive, it'll hurt. I'll definitely miss it, but life goes on. I hope it's timed -- if it happens at all.

Losing the three biggest third party games from this gen will only hurt? Say what you will about GTA it's here to stay and San Andreas proves it. Many thought after Vice City it would fall off in sales. Getting that as an exclusive to Xenon will probably make it a neck and neck race in America.

*Square Enix drops Sony support

*Final Fantasy XII & Kingdom Hearts 2 heading to Xenon

*GTA Next Xenon exclusive

*Namco and other Jpn devs to support MS

At least one of these things is true.
At least one... now if that means more than one, which statistics say it could, I'd go with the first two.

And what's up with Nighttrain and Nintendo reps with the constant Apple references? It's making me anxious. :lol

GTA on xbox2 ?

i cuould maybe see GTA.SA "online" for xbox launch ...but unless it's the real deal "GTA4" .. who cares?

MS have not had a hystory of living up to any big rumour type deals .. they brought bungie and rare ...but the former was just some small PC dev and the later was a fading talent .... i've yet to be blown away buy anything MS have done in the bombshell stakes.

i expect par for the course.

-Namco x Capcom for PS2

Fighting match of the century: Prince of the Cosmos vs. Mega Man.

Predictions:

Sony acquires some kind of studio with a reputation, to bolster their exclusive arsenal.

GTA goes to Xenon720-2 or whatever you want to call it.

We see physical hardware for PS3 and Xbox2, but no Revolution.

Square Enix announces some new Chrono title for PSP.

In the year 2005, those among us that still believe Nintendo is a remarkably innovative company will continue to lose touch with reality.

Sega Sammy discuss widescreen high definition arcade monitors, arcade boards with 2 GB of RAM and physics co-processors and tile-based deferred 3.0+ shaders, mobile platforms with more than twice the performance of Dreamcast, new value-level amusement platform to power pachislot and pachinko LCDs, and lots of next-generation games.

-people who don't actually know anything make vague comments
-other people actually believe them

1) Nintendo will unveil Mario 128 for GC. It will kick lots of ass and have no gimmicks. They'll show it alongside of Zelda while stating that they're still thinking about the gamers who enjoyed them in the first place.

2) New Super Mario Bros for DS will be revealed and will kick ass.

3) At least two N64 to DS ports announced by Nintendo.

4) Donkey Kong Country 3 will be announced for the GBA (even though I'll want it to be on the DS)

5) Square-Enix will announce at least three DS titles, all of them will be ports. Probably Final Fantasy IV, Dragon Warrior IV, and maybe Seiken Densetsu 3. Front Mission is a possibility too.

6) Konami will announce Metal Gear DS, with gameplay thats like the originals and the GBC version. It will use the stylus to do certain stealth actions. The gameplay will be in 2D but will feature some 3D effects.

7) Rare will be the premiere Xbox 2 developer. At E3, they will show several videos of their new titles, explaining why they were pretty much no shows with the original Xbox. Perfect Dark Zero, Banjo Kazooie 3, and a previous unannounced game footage will be shown and will shock everyone with release dates pinned for 2005-2006 but we all know will be 2005-2007, if we're lucky.

8) Splinter Cell 4 will be announced as an Xbox 2 exclusive

9) Nothing but PS3 tech demos will be shown. Cue idiotic statements about how its going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread (much like E3 1999 and the PS2)

10) Revolution initial details and preliminary specs will be revealed. Nintendo may announce a game or two but nothing really serious from them. I expect their N64 DS ports and Mario 128 to be their major items.

time to put the guessing hat on :

Sony :

Sony give first details of their online service. It will be a global pay for service along the lines of XBL. This will be sony's first true push for content download, with a PS branded version of Sonyconnect which will be heralded as something that XBL network isn't providing (a wider variety of non-gaming content )

PS3 software to allow integration direct to PSP mocked up and outlined- with the above online system, Sony show a simulated situation of content (movie) downloaded to PS3 then "1 button converted" and dumped to the PSP via the USB port. Details of full payment levels "still to be decided"

Sony announce a 1 PE / 8 SPE configuration for the PS3.... but it later turns out that something isn't quite right...

GTA confirmed (again) as a PS3 time exclusive title. GTA to use an internally developed PS3 specific engine for the first time. Renderware dropped.

GT5 tech demo shown as "Cell demonstration"

New games from Naughty Dog shown on "Ps3 dev kit" , people swoon. One game bears more than a passing resemblance to the existing market leader in that particular genre, eyebrows raise

Significant exciting new IP from sony 1st party for the PS3 launch detailed.

One Cell demonstration looks significantly beyond what is shown on the Xbox 2 - arguments ensue about the comparison.

New form PSP shown with significant hardware change - confusion ensues as to whether the new features will be used for gaming or not, or just for storage/media playback. Some developers complain about fragmenting of userbase, but Sony state that the new features are not to be used in games.

MS :

Xenon officially named as "Xbox HD"

Halo 2.5 one section demo playable. Set on earth with destructable scenary , Bungie show Halo 2 as a comparison of what the XBox 2 is capable of.

BC officially ruled out.

1 big name japanese company announces development of 3 games, 1 of which is an MMORPG.

2 pieces of hardware news announced - both spec changes.

Xbox 2 design shown for first time - substantially smaller than xbox, but design is generally considered ugly.

Allard lets slip that they will not enter the hand held race until they can put a killer app onto the machine in perfect form (the killer app is "Halo" with 16 player support)

Rare shock everyone by showing interesting first gen Xbox 2 stuff.

MS announces deal with Sega to buy the rights to the "Rez" game - Mizuguchi officially announces Rez 2 for Xbox 2.

EA announce XBox 2 as lead platform - along with full support.

Nintendo :

GBA2 concept emerges, no mention of BC with gamecube.

DS browser software shown.

Revolution cemented as "The mystery box" - Reggie and Iwata say two statements - one pertaining to how people need to look "beyond sitting infront of a tv to play" and one sayiing that the BC isn't what you think and that it will "substantially alter the experience of both NGC and GBA games" - frantic theorizing begins.

DS software support seen increasing significantly.

All :

general feel from developers is that they will support the XBox 2 _and_ the PS3. Many state that the XBox 2 is the lead platform, with the PS3 getting _possible_ enhancements depending on time.

Wireless controllers standard on Xbox 2 and PS3. Revolution doesn't have a "controller" as such but the configurable "video panel" controller is wireless.

Renderware becomes horribly unpopular with , well, everyone.

Microsoft announce Microforte's BigWorld technology to be used for Xbox360 dashboard, as well as announcing its own content-delivery service for HDD-enabled consoles.

Rather than having a simple menu-driven dashboard, Microsoft will opt for building an entire world in which the gamer can interact with their games, music, video, etc. Upon booting of your Xbox360 you will enter the world and can select the game you wish to play from there. The world will have plug-in functionality so developers can buy virtual land within the dashboard world in which their game will be placed (Microsoft gets money for better placement within the world, just like IRL). When EA finish 'Need For Speed: Will Kill For Neons' they send it to Microsoft for approval, it goes on Microsoft's servers and is downloaded in the background like Steam, and is then inserted into your dashboard world. Want to play a flight-sim? Catch a taxi (basically smoke and mirrors for loading, sped up just fast enough for the content required to be loaded in time but still appearing as though it's seamless) to the nearest flight school or airport, hop into one of their planes and start to play the actual Microsoft Flight Simulator. Want to play Forza Motorsport? A taxi ride to the nearest racing school or racing authority or what-have-you and play the actual Forza Motorsport game. Want to play Grand Theft Auto? Well, you could just go around killing shit in the world Microsoft create, I guess. Kind of like how Microsoft include Internet Explorer with their OS, killing off other browsers' chances at a market share, they could include their own GTA clone right in the dashboard.

What else?... Hi-scores, achievements and stuff will be imported directly into your world. You're kicking arse in Forza Motorsport? Lucrative advertising deals come your way and billboards begin to appear all over the world with your mug on them (photo captured with in-built EyeToy, of course). You receive a challenge from another XBL player? Your avatar's mobile device will receive a message and you can go from there, entering whichever game it is through the plug-in system. Also, the dashboard could track the types of games you play most and gradually download more of those types of games in the background so you don't have to wait for the game's plug-in to be downloaded. I suppose a physical copy of the game could even be copied to the HDD if you prefer the case and manual approach.

So, yeah, my E3 prediction is a BigWorld dashboard for Xbox360, with plug-in capabilities and HDD storage of games so you never have to get off your lazy arse to switch games, and you're never removed from the world. I haven't thought much about fantasy games which wouldn't fit with the dashboard world, though, so I guess you could have portals which transport you to other worlds or something like that. Nor have I thought about the player avatar changing from game-to-game.

Nintendo will have a big showing this year. So will MS with some special announcement. Mario 128 on Rev will be... "revolutionary" but it won't appeal to everyone.
