Indie Games [August] Now Voting - Post 937!

Have to feel for the Guncraft guys...

firstly launching after yesterdays big hitters was a mistake IMO, then their page did not go live at release time, then they posted that Steam had a big server crash their end...

now their page has been pulled completely

I feel bad for them too. :(

The Tiny Bang Story made a really good impression on me, so I'm really looking forward to Morphopolis, which combines similar hidden object mechanics with lush organic worlds inspired by Amanita Design works.

You can help them now by voting for it on Steam Greenlight.

Definitely has a Botanicula vibe. Very beautiful and more hidden object games are always welcome.

Ergon / Logos
My kind game, super insane. Actually started to blur up my vision a bit trying to read all the rapidly moving text with massively contrasting colours. A strange beast, but I enjoyed it.
4/5

Usually you're quite harsh with your ratings, so I'm glad you liked it so much. I read somewhere, that the author would like to expand the concept a bit, into something more substantial. Hopefully, he'll be able to realize his vision - the idea of flowing through something that resembles stream of consciousness is really interesting.

Are there any other worthwile hidden object games like TTBS or Pickers?

Anybody else buying Gone Home next Thursday?

Can't wait!

Really thinking about it. The $20 pricetag is a bit hard to swallow especially since I have EUIV coming out next week but i've been in love with the game since I first saw it and really want to give the team my support. Super excited that it's almost here though.

Season of Mystery: Cherry Blossom Murders is pretty good and it's actually my second favorite one, behind Tiny Bang. It's challenging and has nice music. There's also a series of four games called Midnight Mysteries.

Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy - A standard hidden object game with a nice setting. Not very challenging but not easy either.

Midnight Mysteries 2: Salem Witch Trials - Setting is good in this one as well, challenge is the same as the first. But this one starts going in a more adventure game style direction with the exploring.

Midnight Mysteries 3: Devil on the Mississippi - Same as above. Still feels like a combination of a standard adventure game and hidden object.

Midnight Mysteries 4: Haunted Houdini - Again, same as above

It's a good series and they all have creepy, horror-like setting. Not scary but a good atmosphere.

There's a lot more on Steam such as the Clockwork Man games, Samantha Swift games, Mishap games, and others but they are all mostly average. Not bad at all but nothing memorable, either.

For sure. I've been waiting for it for awhile now.

Thanks so much, I'll take a closer look at these games. Don't know why, but this genre is so strangely fascinating.

I'm super excited, the price is a bit too high for me now, though.

When I saw the initial teaser I was expecting it to be an exploration/puzzle game like FRACT OSC, Myst, The Witness etc.

I felt the same after seeing it for the first time, but it looks gorgeous in the new trailer, so there's no reason to be disappointed.

looks like it has all gone a bit wrong for the Guncraft release, reading the forums this morning, and it looks like they have commited the cardinal sin...

getting involved in arguments with a lot of negative posts, I see locked threads and a lot of threads which are baiting them into arguments, they need to walk away...

Onto the Game

It is ok, for a 15 min bash here and there, and it is fun when treated like that, there are a lot of maps which is nice to see..

there seems to be a lot of emphasis put on user creating their own guns and maps, but I dont think it will have the community for that to be successful.....

As with all these types of games which choose to use no progression, you ask yourself what will keep bringing me back to play!!!

That is the million dollar question....

Also they priced it to high, £12 is over priced as the game is not a looker, far from it

Ahh, excellent news. That game could really go somewhere. I have no idea where but I would love to see it. Also glad you liked Tiny Bang Story, I find most hidden objects games a little passable but I found TBS really fun, with the exception of a (can't quite remember it 100%) spinny tile sliding puzzle thing that I got stuck on for an age.

Finally got to listen to the MetaVendetta episode. Thanks for the shoutout guys :)

Great tracks, as always, but why have I not heard of Cosmic DJ yet?

http://vimeo.com/54239137

That looks incredible and I was JUST thinking about wanting to play something like it on PC yesterday. :-o
They are apparently trying to hit a november/december release date.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

As far as CosmicDJ goes, what they have looks incredible! And the idea of basically playing a videogame while simultaneously recording your very own album on Soundcloud sounds unreal,

I'm very anxious to play it.

Just finished Guacamelee, that means it is time for more....

My OP Indie Impressions - Part 4

Last Post: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=75216711&postcount=457

Frequency Domain
A fun toy, but one I feel most people with play with one or two songs and then be 'eh, I'm done.' The description talks about it being a tool to better understand the perhaps more subtle elements in the music but I didn't really experience any understanding that listening to the music by itself wouldn't do. Still, worth having a quick spin on for sure and I imagine that with an oculus rift this thing would be amazing.
3/5

Gateways
Rather fun open world puzzle room style thing. The thing I especially like about this is how all the skills you have are focused around the use of these portals which is one big thing it has over Shuggy which can feel a little disjointed.
4/5

Humans Must Answer
I fear that without a steam entry this game might be a little overlooked which would be a shame because it is a rather excellent shooter with a lot going for it. Gameplay focuses more on ship potioning and clever weapon use rather then the bullet hell idea of just throwing hundreds of bullets at you in creasingly insane patterns. If you are a fan of more slower paced shooter in an R-Type style then this is really worth checking out. Only negatives are that the menus are a little weird in there navigation and backgrounds can get a little busy.
4/5

Infested Planet - Didn't Buy
Looks interesting, but Skulls of the Shogun is fill all my strategy needs for now. I've got a mate who says this is fairly good though if anyone want to jump in.
-/5

ISIS
Pretty damn awesome, quite dark and comic and well worth checking out. Like Toma said in the OP, you can't really saything anything without spoiling anything. Just check it out, it is only 15 minutes long, just check it out.
5/5
Seriously, check it out.

ittle Dew
Hey cool, that's my description on the opening post I believe. ittle Dew is this Zelda clone with high focus on the dungeon puzzle elements of those games. The game itself is very nicely done but a little short and easy, I got through it on my first try in about 2 hours I believe. Then it all sorta opens up, to get all the achievements the game demands you complete it while not collecting all the items. Suddenly easy puzzles becomes nightmare-ish becuae you are missing your fire sword and where it was once a straight line to get to the final boss it is now a maze of oddly connected puzzle rooms and secret passages. If you are the kind of gamer who likes to challange themselves in weird ways then this is the game for you. The only flaw of this game is the combat which although is largely skippable it is also a little clumsey and I honestly think the game would have benefited from improving the fighting or scrapping it all together.
4/5

Lasercat
Open world platform game that reminds me of the expansive platformers that were on the Spectrum and other 80s consoles. Although with far tighter controls of course. Fun to jump in and run around for a bit, the problem is that Lasercat just gets a little dull, it lacks polish in its level design and many of the rooms have a bit of a thrown together feel.
3/5

Making good progress, 19 to go.

Hello everyone,

My brother and I have been working on an RPG Maker project for well over a year now. We've recently completed a revised demo for our game. We're really looking for some solid feedback before we move on with the rest of the project. We would also appreciate it if you were to post comments/suggestions in our demo thread. Below you can find information about our game, a link to our demo and our latest trailer. Thanks!

Heyhey, sorry for not getting back to you via PM. A little bit much on my plate atm, and then I kinda forgot about it :) Could you please at a screenshot to your post?

Yeah, no worries! There's no rush, game's not going anywhere, hah! What's this about a screenshot though? I included screenshots in my post, are they not showing up?

Nope, probably should rehost them on Imgur.

Oh and Maia preorders + Alpha access is finally up!

Apply the coupon code "MAIAMAIL42" for a 22% discount. (Not sure whether it still works, you need to apply it after the Paypal checkout)

Today I featured Schein on my Indie channel. The game deserves a bit more credit as it has been struggling on Greenlight and IndieGoGo in the past, yet it won the 'Imagine Cup' a few months ago for best game.

Step into the role of a desperate young man who is grieving over losing his only son. He wanders aimlessly through a murky swamp in search of .. something.. if only he knew what.

As he finds himself completely lost in the darkness, suddenly a glimmer of hope appears – a will-‘o-the-wisp named Irrlicht – which promises him help and guidance.
As the colorful glow of the Irrlicht touches their surroundings, the world slowly begins to change, transforming it into an altogether different place. Through this beautiful metamorphosis, the man can follow Irrlicht on paths that had not been visible before. Gaining confidence in this magic, he advances deeper and deeper into the swamp, to face its most forbidding secrets.

The game has a demo available on their website aswell.

I applaud your determination! Still reading every one of them and disagreeing where I think applicable. I find myself agreeing with your impressions 9 times out of 10 though :)

Aww thanks. I'll do my best to make sure I get through the final 19 before the month ends.

Well if anyone wants a lesson on how not to manage opinions you dont agree with, they should head over to the Guncraft steam forums....

They have now took to banning people who are complaining about the game, to say Guncraft has not been received well on Steam is an understatement

goes to show sometimes it is best to stay a small production...

The game is not that bad, but it does have issues (like all FPS) in paticualar the Sniper being massively OP on open maps, and it looks poor...

and the lack of any options, TotalBiscuit would have a field day

Knowing how to deal with bad critics is essentials, and for indie developers is more than vital since they may not have another chance.

Sir You Are Being Hunted on Steam Early Access and Humble Store on August 19th!

This really is the month for indies

this is a easy one to do, lets just hope they dont go silly with price

Actually, this is a case in point on why I am stopping backing on Kickstarter, just looking at their page, any backer who wanted Alpha Access had to pay £30, or $50, now all of a sudden anyone can get this access by paying £12.50 or $20 from their website/steam...

So why charge so much more to be a backer!!! I dont buy into the "well you get your name in the credits"

EDIT, I see the KS backers from the high priced brackets allready have the game

I've been playing Toki Tori 2 in this past week and I'm surprised at how much they improved the game. I didn't like the first Toki Tori at all, it is a competent puzzle game, but too repetitive to be good. The second is nothing like that, it's kind of a metroidvania puzzle game. The levels are typical of 2D platformers, but as you cannot jump, traversing the levels becomes a puzzle. It's a pretty fun game. It really makes me sad that it is kind of ignored here on Neogaf while the first game receives undeserved praise.

My exact thoughts. Nabs disagrees though.

Toki Tori 2 was not ignored, it was just released at a poor time for PC gamers (check the Wii U threads). There's also no demo, so you're asking people to jump in blindly. TT2 is so different it needs a demo.

Solving the end game puzzles in Toki Tori made you feel like a genius. Not sure why a game with such cutesy visuals was so difficult, but I appreciated it.

I feel really mean for saying that, but.. they sort of had it coming with that price point and the current state the game is in. Lets just say that I am not a fan and this community thing will deservedly hurt them very much.

it is a shame, as there is some really good level design ideas in there, when you dig beneath the service, that will hopefully be picked up by other game developers..

The 2 notable ones are

Lava Mode

The lava slowly raises, last one standing (highest) wins, but as you are knocked out you turn to a ghost and can freeze other players for 8 secs...

Meteor Mode

Obvious as it sounds it is a DM mode but with Meteors showering down

Those 2 ideas are really good and put into a better game/concept I could see being really popular

Finally downloading and checking out Maia. Please be good, please be good, please be good.

"Maia is a new god game from indie developer Simon Roth.

Dungeon Keeper meets Dwarf Fortress on a primordial alien world. "
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/simonroth/maia

Well, that feels a bit like wasted money for now. There are some things currently in the game, but its not really a proper game yet and its horribly implemented. No saving yet, bugs, and Escape just quits the whole application. I'll dig more into this once its a bit further along in development. He is currently implementing lots of background simulation stuff, but there isnt really anything yet that the game can be recommended for other than being a nice in development showcase if someone is interested in game design and development.

Yeah, timing was really bad. Shame since it was in the 'coming soon' section for what seemed like an eternity. Once I get some free time I may give it a try because it honestly looks fantastic.

Alpha is Alpha :p
But yeah the backend additions has made the progress seem like a snails pace.
That and War of the Overworld's Alpha.

Two of the few reasons I've started to op for the Beta/ Final release for KS games.

The first Factorio alpha was an amazing game that would land on my GOTY list as it was. They already improved it by then and they are still in alpha, so no Alpha is not Alpha :p

Well this becomes a debate on the idea of Alpha then! Factorio is nice though, really enjoyed what I played ... Hmm come to think of it I played the demo, bought the game and only played like an hour or so .... ugh I need to keep a list of games I've bought and not really played.

Yeah, opinions seem to differ on that, but if we are just going by what the devs state as the current versions, they are both "Alphas".

Ah well, going to check back on Maia in a few months.

I'd day a year or two :p
Man Project Zomboid is also a game moving a snails pace.
Starbound's daily updates is getting more and more focused so expecting an alpha/ beta hopefully soon .. ish.

Starsector

This game is essentially Mount & Blade in space, and it is awesome. It's currently in Alpha and $10 (will go up later.) The combat is a top down shooter that is pretty deep. There are a bunch of different weapon types and where you hit the enemy matters (i.e. you can disable a ship by firing at the engines.) There are some light RTS elements where you assign orders to your fleet, but you only have a limited number of orders per battle which encourages you to participate in the fight and minimizes micromanagement. The big draw for me is the RPG aspect of the game. You start off as a single ship and crew, but you slowly grow your fleet by capturing / buying new ships. You also need to keep buying food and fuel for your growing empire.

Eventually the game will have a bunch of different factions / solar systems that will battle each other. You can pick a side or go in it alone. A lot of that stuff isn't in the game yet, but there is already a big modding community for this game that have added a bunch of content.

I really like this game so far, and highly recommend it. The combat is hard to learn at first, but once it clicks, it's great fun.

Reading your post, I don't really see the M&B aspects

---
Also, is it okay if I post a trade here, Steam and Desura keys, indies for indies? I don't see a Desura trading thread and the Steam trading thread moves a snail's pace.

Reading your post, I don't really see the M&B aspects

As I said, a lot of that stuff is not currently in the base game yet (currently only has one solar system and one faction,) but I am playing a mod that adds a bunch of factions and expands the system. There is an overworld where you travel between locations and spot other fleets just like M&B. You also manage your crew and supplies like M&B. It's just difficult to show off that stuff in screens (I'll take a few later though.)

The only major difference is the combat. The RTS elements are minor and work like M&B's order system, it just has a better interface for it.

Once the game adds named heroes and more solar systems, it's going to be awesome. Especially with mods (there's a Star Trek one already that I want to check out.)

Sounds similar on a high level, an RTS where you are in the battle yourself as a commander. Not on the low level of the specific physical actions you can make your avatar do.
I see. Sounds cool

Starfarer was really awesome! I didn't realize they changed the name.
I should login and download the new updates!

Can't believe the mods are already available. I am gonna lose half my day in this.

Good to see Starfarer/Sector coming along. That might be one of the earliest indie alphas I brought into. Little did I know the alpha buying rabbit hole I would be falling down in the years to come.
