Indie Games [January] Now Voting - Post 634!

I had been intrigued by the game but was put off by the descriptions of how hands-off the gameplay was

But this doesn't hinder the experience in any way?

Well, as I said in the video, it IS a bit weird that you cant order the units precisely and only send them to other rooms, but once you got over that, it has a nice dynamic of preparing your setup and working on your defenses in between your exploring new rooms.

Its less an action roguelike (Risk of Rain/Binding of Isaac) and falls more into the strategic category ala FTL.

I'd say the game is definitely worth it because it is a quite unique blend of genre mechanics that I havent seen anywhere else like this yet.

Check out what Pylon thought in his annoyingly eloquent and "much better than me" sort of way: Here.

I actually bought it on the back of his impressions and agree with Toma, it's pretty damn cool.

Rain World Kickstarter launches tomorrow! I've been anticipating this game for over a year

Cool! Thanks for linking this. I love the look of it. The animation is awesome and the lighting in the below picture is great.

Oha, Broken Age part 1 (Doublefine kickstater adventure) releases tomorrow.

So this guy found my YT channel randomly and told me of his videogame. It looked decent enough, so I'll just include it next month:

BloodLust - Free Demo (PC)
hnxUmKE.jpg

http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/bloodlust/index.htm

Indie Vampire RPG with dynamic Inventory, stats and skills. Gameplay apparently provides infinite replay through randomized dungeons. Summon bats, leeches and spiders to do your dirty work and build your bloodline from a fledgling into a powerful vampire. During your journey you will find and use hundreds of weapons and items.

The trailer looked interesting enough, will check it out next month.

Any reason why Nidhogg is receiving so much attention? Local 1v1 is probably pretty fun, but it doesn't look that worthwhile or fleshed out, like, I've seen games that have done more with the same artstyle. Maybe the online mode will prevent it from being another Samurai Gunn, though (which, in my opinion, should have been a console release, but I digress). I'm a bit puzzled, especially because we tend to feature a lot of interesting games in these threads that don't generate half the response.

Not that I mind, and I'm not saying it doesn't deserve it (always happy to see Indie stuff being noticed), just curious as to why this particular game generated such a response. Seems like people were really looking forward to it, too. Probably had something to do with IGF, I reckon?

Yup, should be good. I wasn't a backer, so I'll have to twiddle my thumbs for a bit longer.

Samurai Gunn is coming to console. It's going to be on PS4 and Vita
From what I read, Nidhogg is very tactical, and with a lot of moves and depth.
Both games also have solo modes

Nidhogg's success is in its pickup-and-play ease of entry while still providing deep enough mechanics to allow for some radically high end play. It's not just stabbing each other but generating opportunities to give yourself the upper hand. At any given time you can attempt to disarm your opponent, knock him over and snap his neck, roll under his attack, throw your sword to catch him off guard, any number of complex moves.

Earlier I had a match where I managed to kill my opponent by throwing my sword at a wall which bounced and hit them on the rebound before it touched the floor, giving me the kill. Another instance was throwing a sword while on an elevated platform and timing my retreats just right so that it would juke his screen and lead him to getting hit by it without realizing the sword was still flying at the elevation he'd be at.

It's really all about the moment to moment and not about combo execution. The back and forth fighting can be exhausting but also hilarious at the same time. I wish there were more stages since each one has unique additions and challenges to the playing fields and better netplay options, but god damn it is so much fun.

Its an overhyped Indie game (I dont mean to be...mean actually, but its kinda hard to live up to the hype of these games prelaunch) thats been buzzing around the scene for ages, kinda like Monaco was. I just bought it, so my 2 cents:

The combat isnt terribly deep, but incredibly well balanced with one or the other interesting trickery like the ones Cheesecake just described. In fact, its rather simple actually, but the combat still works because of how those simple actions relate to each other and how fun it ends up being if you try to outwit your enemies and then end up thinking one step to much and end up running into your enemies blade.

Its really a quite hilarious vs game, local vs especially, but the actual game content is rather poor. There are 4 different arenas that you can play MP or SP in, but there is not really much more to it. If you kill the other guy a few times in a row, you manage to escape and win. What they tried to achieve here, works incredibly well, meaning its a fun MP game with a gameplay mechanic that is as simple, as it allows for wit and trickery.

Mechanically, this game works incredibly well and deserves the praise it gets for its gameplay design alone. However, content wise, this game is so bare bones, that I'd probably recommend waiting for the inevitable $5 sale if you arent big into simple MP matches. (Or you are having a house party soon like I am having.) Personally, I think its a little overpriced, but you can get away with that if you are x times IGF winners I guess :p But yeah, in the end its all about exposure, plenty of other Indies in these threads that I considered better games that got less attention, not much you can do about that. Its the AAA industry marketing equivalent.

I loved the sound of the snippet you posted and then I realized I have played this demo before. I can't imagine where else I would have heard about it besides these threads but I couldn't find it in any of the OPs. When I played it, the game was super janky and I barely made it 10 minutes before giving up in frustration. The screenshots and concept all speak to me but it still needed a ton of polish.

Nidhogg gets its hype from the indie events it's demonstrated at. It's one of the best spectator games ever made.

I actually just played a bunch of Nidhogg myself. I think it's a pretty cool little game 1v1 because of the simplicity. Like Toma said, it's all about using the few moves you have to trick your opponent. It might be a little pricey, but I can see this being a blast at parties or in crowds.

I'm playing Heroine's Quest and it's a good game. The game is capable to pass the feel of a 90's adventure/RPG game, be it with the graphics, the artstyle, the music and the voice acting. I haven't got very far yet just killed a raider and wandered in the first and the forest, and the game seems to have a lot of content to you explore.

I'm curious to read the opinions of people who had played that genre of game when they were more common back in the day, and how Heroine's Quest compares to them.

To follow the format, it needs to be:

Sorry for being picky about that, but otherwise the program wont pick it up.

Yeah, thats usually the issue with these type of games, then again, he might have improved it in the meantime.. hopefully. I'll see next month in any case.

Sure, same as Monaco. Just saying that the hype these games get isnt necessarily representative of their overall quality compared to other stuff in the Indie scene. By that logic it would be Monaco >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Factorio based on "hype" alone, and.. eh.

Although I actually DO like Nidhogg, no clue why my posts sound so negative.

I thought it was just a beta before the actual release in a month or so. Doesn't seem that weird.

I just lost the ability to keep track of which games I am eligible for Alphas, or Betas or only the full games. Kinda confusing.

I need to finish Antichamber so I can hand in my GOTY votes.

Rain World looks unique and awesome, more animal combat games I say!

I can totally see why Nidhogg is getting a bunch of hype. The animations look hilarious. It's been talked about and demo'd for years, much like Fez. It's been a crowd-pleaser enough at e-sports events to earn a subtitle of its own (GET THAT DICK) and co-op swordfighting with high/mid/low stances sounds great.

You can't deny the E Sports Monster!

Thanks for the answers regarding Nidhogg, guys. @Toma, you understood exactly what I meant when I was talking about the popularity (not the quality) of the game. As you said, it's all about exposure which means that we'll have to keep these threads alive for a while longer. :P

I definitely see the appeal of Nidhogg's gameplay btw, so I'll try it eventually. Hopefully the art design won't be irking me anymore by then, haha.

Also, they should have called it Hamlet Simulator 2014.

Samurai Gunn is coming to console. It's going to be on PS4 and Vita

Ah, my bad! Will buy once I own those platforms.

This is kinda stupid, but I sorta love this:

That's pretty funny (and accurate). If you enjoy Katamari style games, you should try out The Wonderful End of the World. Another indie classic that deserves a Wayback Wednesday post.

Joined a game and had to spectate, was treated to some hilarious scenes (literally laughed out loud), so this game's alright in my book, despite the rudimentary interface and iffy performance.

Their is a co-op mode in Nidhogg? Unless it has passed me by I believe it is versus only for now.

I was using "coop" as well... I meant versus, but in the spirit of sitting and playing a game "together".. which came out as coop, haha.

Cheers for the recommendation. I've actually played Wonderful End of the World, it was one of the earliest indies I got on steam if my memory serves me well. I remember rather enjoying it although some of the levels were a little small in scale. I remember especially liked the final level which was that Pac-man maze that ended up with your consuming all the walls, ghosts, pellets, floor, and random space invaders and centipedes running around outside. Good times.

Ahh, so it is used in the sense of we are working together to murder each other. Loving it.

Should be the tagline of the game :p

That is the exact definition of love, actually.

Actually its:
Love is a minimalistic platforming game with a retro aesthetic and a focus on a challenging but not unfair difficulty. It has an innovative respawn system, 12 levels, 12 track soundtrack, competitive scoring, and a simple-to-use level creation feature.

Love is a game of platforms. There.

So I finally updated my drivers for the first time in like a year. And what do you know? I can Puddle and Cargo Commander without lag anymore

But those have to wait because I finally decided to give The Binding of Isaac another chance. I don't remember why I didn't like it last time, probably because of lag messing up the experience, but damn, this game is absolutely amazing. The whole story and aesthetic is quite disturbing and unsettling, the items and modifiers really change up the gameplay, and it's a fantastic mix of roguelike and frantic shooter gameplay

Now I'm hyped for Rebirth

The trailer for this interested me so I went ahead and checked it out. I'm only in the first area, but the game really throws everything at you right from the start. There are puzzles, traps, secrets and even a randomized dungeon to explore. You can also sire a fledgling vampire that you can control, and they even have their own inventory and skill sheet. The game is a little janky, but I don't think the dev team is very big and it more than makes up for it with its ambition.

OP impressions, Elette:
I dont like it. Seems rather simplistic and except for the cute animated sequences it doesnt seem to be worth playing to me. The gameplay revolves just around you shooting arrows to hit all the enemies on the screen, and occasionally switching the arrow type or getting another unit that helps shooting arrows. It seemed quite.. bland gameplaywise.

Kinda surprised so many seemed to like it on Desura.

Started playing The Cat Lady. It was featured very high on someone's list in the voting thread (even though it's a 2012 release) so I decided to check it out.

I'm into it, I have to say. Tonally, it reminds me of Silent Hill. The imagery is quite striking as is the dialogue which I would describe as dreamlike. The mechanics don't seem that intricate (basic adventure game routine of picking up items and using them somewhere else), but this might change. Seems like it could go to interesting places with the story which is the main draw here.

A bit unfair that I started it now since I can't return to it anytime soon. Need to spend more time with a handful of games for the voting, followed by OP impressions, as usual. Maybe give the intro a watch to see if this might interest you.

OP video impressions, Hero Siege:
http://youtu.be/lqNmXUKcRd0

screen_1.png

Action hack&slash that stumbles over its mobile origins, which makes the game way too simple and limited. It does feel satisfying to romp through the game, but it also feels rather shallow and boring overall because you cant really "do" anything. You have only 1 active skill you can eventually use and otherwise just use the same basic attack all the time. I can see some people actually liking spending time with such a game, because it just allows to turn off the brain and do some carefree slashing around, my overall recommendation is definitely: Do not buy (at least not on a non-mobile platform), because there are plenty of other games in the genre with actual content and actually interesting combat.

Honestly impressed you managed to stick with that one for about 20 minutes, I was brain dead after 4. Those underground guillotines really are something else.

40 actually because I screwed up my first stream attempt. Got really tired of it too, but I wanted to get the video done after I spent 6€ on it :p

May it serve as a warning for others.

I remembered some people here were interested in Cloudbuilt and thought I'd drop by to post a link to a recorded stream of RobotLoveKitty's Indie Dev Supershow where we were a featured game. We sent them our latest iteration and they played the game while chatting with our creative director Anders.

Hope you guys like it. :)

Game looks hot! Like Mirror's Edge and Mega Man Legends wrapped into one (who needs sequels?
ok i kinda do
). Can't wait to see the speedruns on some of those levels.

Env - Free (PC, Mac)

A short abstract first-person physics platformer which has you survive for 6 minutes against forces beyond your control that are tearing the world apart
Found this on IndieDB. Simple and not very long, more of a tech demo than an actual game, but it's very visually cool. Worth a playthrough or two just for the environmental stuff
