Six Sides of the World - PC, Mac
BOfHaBPCQAAdhX4.jpg

http://www.cybernetikdesign.com/

This is a 3D - Puzzle - Maze game, where we have to help the main character, Maigo, to find an item (now is a star, but I'm in the way to change it for something related with the game plot). The levels are build in cube-shaped planets, and we have to move between faces to solve the puzles and find the level item. This adds some extra dificulty because you can't see all the planet faces at the same time an you have to remember where to go.
Also, the levels can have more than one planet, and that creates more and interesting gameplay dynamics.

We don't usually feature IOS only games, but Blek deserves the attention

Blek - $2.99 (IOS)
nr-december-6-blek.jpg

http://blekgame.com/

Blek is a game about imagination and personality. Everything you draw keeps moving - and watching your creations move is like watching magic.
The goal is simple: shape a line that collects all colored circles avoiding black holes on its route. Through beautiful and elegant design Blek reminds you that all you need to do is to play [with] it. There are no specific moves that you need to master. To every level countless solutions exist, from delightfully simple to exceptionally deep and complex, yet always elegant.

Impressions:
This game is a minimalist piece of art, and easily joins the ranks of Strata and Ten as my favorite minimal puzzle games. There isn't even a menu; the game opens with your first puzzle, which also acts as a simple tutorial. The art itself is merely a collection of black and colored dots on a white surface but what truly makes Blek a joy to play is the line. There is something so visually appealing and satisfying about seeing your line move so fluidly across the screen, in a way that feels unpredictable yet is completely planned

Yes, Blek is not just some minimalist experiment; it's also a puzzle game. Like the best puzzle games, the core mechanic is simple to understand, but difficult to master. Draw a path for your line to follow, which it will repeat until it leaves the screen, touches a black circle, or a colored circle. Your goal is to collect all the colored circles in a level and the genius of Blek is the freedom you're granted to complete the task. Your solutions can be as simple or as complex as you can think of. From the simple inching line to a complex pattern that gracefully weaves between attempting-ending black spots, Blek is a rare puzzle game that presents the player with a challenging scenario and then gives you free reign to solve it how you wish.

If you enjoy puzzle games that doesn't offer to hold your hand, that instead allow you to use your own intelligence and creativity to succeed, or just like games with great minimalist design and style, I highly recommend Blek

Played the Time Rifters demo. Does some things well, but I thought it was lacking or flawed in other ways

The main concept is that you're playing "co-op" with your previous runs. So each run is about 60 seconds, you do as much damage as you can, then you play as another version, choose your weapon and upgrades, then work together with that previous version.

The game has a really cool visual design and a lovely 3D augmented reality style display that gives the game a nice futuristic aesthetic

But the gameplay is repetitive, which I guess is connected to the core mechanic. Playing the same level over and over and over and over, for every level, just gets boring fast. And I don't know if there will be any actual enemies later, but all you do is shoot cubes for gold and points. Patterns of cubes come, you shoot them, that's it. No danger, no intensity or drive to try something different or to even move.

Guys, can you access the Desura website?

Some people have had trouble getting on there lately.

Was there a topic somewhere with solutions to this problem? I can access it on my iPad but not on either of my PCs O.o

Which is... weird.

Edit: I cant even access the Desura services from the program. What is going on here?

Edit2: It was back for 2 minutes, now its gone again. Found some posts that are suggesting that the Desura guys are apparently currently trying to fix whatever is causing this.

Incredibly cool, but wont be in the next OP for the reason you just named :p

Will download immediately though.

Bah :( iOS 6 needed. My trusty old iPad 1 is slowly but surely ending its services by not letting my run simple apps.

OP impressions Bass Blocks (which I wanted to make in video form, but my coughing doesnt allow for it yet)

It is a twin stick shooter with a very frantic gameplay and interesting art style. The art style and how the individual elements effect each other visually (like shots "shaking" the ground tiles, or enemy pixel pieces staying behind) looks rather impressive, but also is probably the biggest weakness of the game since it makes it sometimes really hard to differentiate between "effects" and enemies.
The actual gameplay seems solid and engaging since you are constantly hunting skill upgrades, which I havent fully understood yet, in search of the 3 bosses and it just looks pretty. The game also seems to have a ton of stuff going on that you wont be able to see/judge within the first few times playing:

On the Desura screenshots you see dungeons, different surroundings and other weird shit going on, I'll definitely go back to this to try making a proper video of it. I definitely liked what I played so far and this game needs further inspection. Thumbs up.

Quick heads up though: If you are gaming on a notebook, you NEED to try the demo. Its rather graphically intensive and playing on 640*480 doesnt make much sense because you cant see the enemies very well.

Played the Time Rifters demo. Does some things well, but I thought it was lacking or flawed in other ways

I had a go with that too, similar experience. The novelty of seeing yourself is pretty good at first and I always like physical ingame menus (although some of the interface that wraps around you is mighty distracting). But past that yeah, just shooting boring block patterns. Potential there but the team have a lot to work on or else this will be nothing more then a tower defense game where you play as all of the towers... individually.

just got my key for strike vector beta, go check your inboxes

Gosh darn it! Nothing yet for me...

Totally fluke caught a rather pretty sunset on Epsilon Prime.

Got my eyes on Rodina, The Cabin, and Galactic Princess.

Trailer
Really enjoying this. Got it last night on IOS, and it's fun, varied, and challenging. Since I'm not sure you guys are all IOS gamers, I can't just say the gameplay is Slingshot Racing + twitchy puzzle action. Essentially your cube accelerates forward and you control it by latching onto nodes that allow you to swing in an arc. Timing when to grab on and when to release is critical. The game actually evolves that tried-and-true mechanic by adding different color zones, each with its own node behavior. Blue acts as the usual slingshot/hook. Purple is more like a grappling hook, pulling you towards the node. Yellow nodes are like portals and teleport you between nodes. Moving obstacles and tight corners and corridors stand between you and the exit.

OP impressions, Beyond:

While it does look nice, there is just not much to it. The "gameplay" mechanic of collecting balls feels rather superimposed and adds nothing to the experience of the player. Its also very poorly designed in terms of level design and the actual platforming "challenges" it presents. It doesnt "work" as an explorative game either, so I guess this one is not really worth anyones time.

Decided to play some freeware classics

Zineth
http://zinethgame.tumblr.com/
15725.jpg

I remember when I first tried this game, didn't like it all. I had never played games with a mouse and keyboard before, and I just couldn't play it. Coming back to it, I can finally fully enjoy the experience and it's just as fun as ever. Fluid freeform stunts across large environments with a cool abstract art style.

Facade
http://www.interactivestory.net/
facade%20screencap.jpg

I don't think this game holds up as well as I remembered. Still it's special to me, for introducing me to indies. The AI responding to your typed phrases is not as impressive as it once was, but it's still pretty entertaining to type weird non sequiturs and see the AI's response. I don't think any other game has tried to bring the player into such an intimate situation and then give them so much control over how to alter the scenario. Even recent mature games like Gone Home are very hands off, showing and telling rather than letting the player make his own choices.

And good ole' Nitronic Rush
http://games.digipen.edu/downloads/NitronicRush_setup?id=1170#.UtLt7PRDvT8
NitronicRushc1.jpg

Not much can be said about Nitronic Rush that hasn't been said. It's fast frenetic survival racing that still holds up extremely well. I think it's probably one of most polished and content packed freeware games I've played and I'm very happy that the devs were able to make their vision even bigger. But of course playing Nitronic only makes me want that Distance beta even more

---
Playing these games made me think about the state of freeware games today. Maybe it's just me, but compared to these older freeware games, it seems like today's freeware games have diminished in some aspects. Zineth, Nitronic Rush, even Iji felt like full fledged releases that could have easily been released on consoles. They have tons of content, while many freeware games I've played today feel more like mere concepts of great ideas or just are so short. Anyone else feel this way?

This one on the other hand is a pretty cool concept. Instead of taking the abstract idea of programming and using certain concepts to create a game around it (for example SpaceChem), it actually has the programming code inside the game inside of which you are navigating the character to adjust certain variables. The game revolves a lot around actually understanding values and basic conditions/loops. You will definitely find this easier to play if you actually ever did some programming so these concepts arent new to you, but I guess you could work these out with a bit of guess work. It is a bit unfortunate that it mostly revolves around editing true/false values and just numbers instead of allowing you to toy a bit more with certain other parts of the code.

Due to those limitations imposed by what it allows you to adjust and the limited variety of puzzles result from that, the game wont rank among the best puzzle games, but its actually surprisingly well done for what it is. Definitely worth a look.

So, OP impressions, Conspirocracy:

Its also currently on sale for $1,99 instead of $8,99 over on Desura: http://www.desura.com/games/conspirocracy

I've been playing it for 2 hours now and as far as adventure games go its pretty well made. The game seems rather logical about its solutions, even if some solutions require you to think around the corner a bit. Funny dialogues, an ingame hint book if you want it (which leads to you not receiving achievements) and a sizeable traversable world which will take a while to get aquainted to. Oh also this game has a "stress" mechanic, which is a rather cool way of restricting the player to certain actions and make him think instead of brute forcing his way through it. If you fill the stress meter, you die, so its in your best interest, not to drive a full bus all the time or to threaten your advisor, no matter how tempting it might seem. There are cases in which stressful solutions get you further in the story, but it might be wise to choose the proper timing. That might sound a bit vague, but its working quite well without ever feeling like a huge burden (even though the character can die from it).

It seems that this game might be rather long given what overarching story it is already hinting at and how much time it took me to do some beginner puzzles in the starting area. The biggest drawback so far for me is that it can take quite a bit of walking around to see whether an item might help you with a particular situation. As I said , the game is rather good at making solutions seem logical, so you wont just trial and error yourself through it, but if you still need to traverse from place A to B to try an item and you'll then be told that you need something else as well... then it feels a bit tedious.

But other than that, its rather well made. If you are into adventure games, go pick it up during the sale for cheap. If you arent into adventure games, then this game likely wont change your opinion either since its pretty standard as far as these games go.

I just got 3 invites. First come, first serve :p

Invites only to the regulars I know from these threads, so no lurkers or one time posters, sorry!

Quote this post here in the thread (so the others see that my 3 invites are gone) and then send me a PM with your email address
.

Edit: Gone.

Damn my busy weekend.

Before looks rather Tail of the Sun-ish. I'd love another good exploration/mammoth stabbing/tusk tower-building/prehistoric life/shape collecting sim, even if only slightly improved upon.

OP impressions, Deadlock:

This game has a FREE DEMO, which I didnt mention in the OP before.

I probably wouldnt have tried it if not for the demo, because I am never quite sure how well 3D action games run on my notebook. To my surprise, it ran decently, looked great and even played well. The game has a LOT of 3D platforming, in fact its probably more of a parkour/speedrunning game than a portalesque puzzle platformer. The thing is... I cant really say much bad about it. The level design in the first few levels "worked", even despite their rather simplistic nature, and it actually feels great once you get to areas that allow for quick hopping, teleporting and running over the clouds. The game looks great and gives a great sense of scale and danger. It controls great (where many 3D Indie platformers fail) and makes it rather easy to precision land after jumps. They really polished that jumping/landing a lot so you never feel like you missed a jump because of the game's shortcomings.

I mean, these games cater to a very specific audience, but based on the trailer, the game will offer more intricate level design later on and if you are into these fast action platformer speedrun games, this one is for you. So yeah, grab the demo.

I'll probably buy it during one of the next weekends and play through it on my big PC. That game deserves high graphical settings :p

I had put Door Kickers aside for a few updates and what a difference that has made

Improved visuals and animations make the tactical action more immersive and intense. Enemies move around the map, on patrols and react to your actions. You can customize your troopers with different weapons and different classes. Silenced weapons allows for new strategies. There's a mission generator so you never run out of missions to play, as well as hand-crafted single missions and new mission types. And there's even more to come, such as squad promotions and a full-fledged campaigns

Frozen Synapse may own the tactical multiplayer space, but I prefer Door Kickers for the grounded and realistic premise, simpler controls, and more subtle tactical approach.

Despite my coughs, I decided to try recording another video for my initial impressions on Dungeon of the Endless.
I think it turned out rather decent even :-o

Going to post the link after the upload is finished.

I know it looks bad, but I just wanted a small thumbnail to easier point out any YT links I made myself. Otherwise its a bit hard to differentiate a post with a YT link from a normal one. So there ya go:

So yeah, I captured my first 25 minutes which should also explain nicely how the game is played and shows of most of the current alpha gameplay mechanics I guess. Once again sorry for the coughing, but otherwise I think the video came out pretty decent.

Really cool mix of tower defense and roguelike, definitely will play more of that once they add more content, but it seems to be quite fun at its current price already. Just judging based on my first impressions and if the content of the alpha basically doesnt end right after I stopped playing... definitely recommendable. Best game I played so far this month.

From your video the game is looking good, the visual are superb, the interface is really well done and the music creates the atmosphere needed.

An older game (like "released in 2011, updated in 2012" old), but I just learned about it. Have never seen any articles about the game anywhere else

Jumping Line - Free, $1.99 (PC, Mac, IOS)
screen.png

http://lichterloh-dev.com/

A minimalist, creative, hard and cheap plattformer, which combine all the good old features, like triggers, moving and rotating plattforms, spikes, etc. in one big Level and adds a new gameplay element such as the player automatically jumps if he hits the ground. The idea was to remove everything that dont have to be in the game and create a game, made of pure gameplay and level design. So, ingame you have just one big (3.4k blocks long) level with 56 checkpoints to save in it, that will take you for houres to come to the end.
Jumping Line Plus includes the level editor

Yeah, it seems good quality. Some things are a bit weird, like the coordination of multiple characters, but its definitely a great start. As I said, I definitely recommend getting it if the video seemed interesting to you.

Yeah really love this game so far.
Bought it on the release. What I love about this game is the subtle approach to it's puzzle mentatlity. I played the game like I would any TD game and it always ended up badly for me. But once I figured out the importance of how power works once the core is removed the whole game changed. I went from getting killed on the first level 3 times, to finishing the alpha on my fourth time.

I actually screwed up on the last stage. I had the same two survivors since the first stage, maxed out like bauses. Then one guy died. I decided to yolo the game since I had the intention to quit and play again at a later stage, but the first room I yolo into had a new survivor I could buy! One of the few times I screamed out fuck yeah in a game.

Oh guess this is also my first post this month, so great job guys! Have not had alot of time for Gaf or even games as of late, so will be back in form someday ... not like I was that active.

This is very un-indie, I know, but we have a big La-Mulana announcement this week. The 16th to be exact!

Is it still in early alpha right? I think I'm going to wait for the game reach beta at least.

La-Mulana 2?

0.1.3 but "Alpha" doesnt necessarily mean the same thing as it did 5 years ago. The game is already better than a majority of other indies. So if you are interested in following the development and replaying this game every month with some new aspects, then its definitely a game to consider because it already plays quite well.

I had been intrigued by the game but was put off by the descriptions of how hands-off the gameplay was

But this doesn't hinder the experience in any way?
