IndieGogo - Windows 10 GPD Handheld -299$ "A Laptop Fitting in Your Pocket"

Geek buying just charged me, despite me saying I want to cancel and providing no ship date. This is annoying. I may dispute.

How's the ergonomics of the device? It looks unwieldy. I just want to play indie Steam games on it. Like Owlboy.

I can only understand this as a streaming / maybe emulator device. The performance of 3D games seems all around awful.

Most are testing modern 3D games on it. Few tests of games from before 2007 run smoothly at screen res. Two such games I have lined up are Halo CE and X-Men Legends 2. And it's handled modern indie games quite well. Your late 2000s games are hit or miss depending,

z8750 (or z8700) is way too much power for a streaming device. A GPD XD can satisfy your streaming options and is way cheaper. It can also play some emulators.

Sorry for the delay, I'll be showing OwlBoy tomorrow. I just finished uploading F-Zero GX. CPU cores stay pegged at 2.56Ghz

F-Zero video up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR58DLKpmnc

I'm going to be doing a bunch of Gamecube games tomorrow. So if you'd like to see something, let me know.

Pikmin would be great if you could.

Hey Phawx I know you're drowning in requests, but could you try Dark Souls with a low internal resolution using Dsfix. I have a suspicion that we can make it run at 30 with some tweaks.

If you're only doing GCN then I suggest Resident Evil Remake. Thanks for your hard work. Cheers.

I saw paper Mario on your dolphin list so how does that run? Really curious if it's playable with the 8700

Did everyone else on GB get charged before shipment?

So these 3 vids popped up and I have a hard time believing that these are native and running on the GPD Win:

My Intel i5 4400 can't really run these that well, so I wonder if they are streaming or if the GPD Win is really good enough to play at this quality. From what I've seen, these should be stuttering more, espeically NFS.

The streaming aspect has nearly sold me, just need to know more about ergonmics and how well the sticks feel.

This isn't cool. I don't want to be charged before there's even a ship date. That's absurd.
It's very odd, although I will say that others have received theirs from geekbuying and their order still says Payment Confirmed (processing).

Those frame rates are pretty awful. Clearly sub 30. I think people will be surprised by the power here though.

Im more interesting in running games within the GPD Win's spec wheelhouse

Indies and various legacy emulators

PSP, PS1, MAYBE PS2 and Gamecube

I guess I'm so used to playing on PC's with insufficient power (I had an ASUS T100 for the longest time) that sub 30 and low res doesn't bother me as much. Maybe this handheld IS for me after all!

i've streamed the xbox one to my windows 10 linx tablet before and apart from a few video playback issues because of some driver problems I had, it was solid and rather lag free over wifi. It was instant enough that I was able to test some campaign and warzone without much of an issue in combat.

Thanks for this!

Is there any particular reason to do a clean install? In my brief time with it, Windows didnt seem particularly bloated.

I just like having a clean install to the latest Windows release XD. After updating 1607 to latest Windows update and DISM purge, hibernation file off and increased the page file to 2048MB flat, base x64 Windows install was 10~GB. So 46GB were free.

Phawx, how about the ergonomics of it?

I find the GPDwin pretty comfy. The L3 and R3 are terribly placed. But for mainline twin-stick analog, it's really good. The shoulder buttons do feel really loose, but they have good action. I haven't yet put the D-Pad through the paces yet.

But standard grip with thumbs on the analog sticks is optimal. I've played in 40 minute bursts and my hands haven't cramped up like OG 3DS used to bring about.

Straight Dolphin 5 seems to be better than Ishiiruka's Build of Dolphin.

Better FPS in F-Zero after switching?

Considerably. One key area if you notice in my video of Ishiiruka's build. At the 2:25 mark, sound is considerably *less* distorted on straight Dolphin.

I'll do tests on both before recording and go with the best one.

This is what I was worried about. Not necessarily a big issue for indie games (which I'm guessing is what the GPD is more intended for), but FPS titles and the like I could it see it being a deal breaker.

I plan on mapping those keys to delete or the number bar. But it's strange they couldn't use the large blank area between the thumb sticks. GPD XD smartly has L3/R3 next to the analogs.

Going by a thread on Reddit it sounds like Dark Souls actually works. Dunno if DS3 will ever run, but that still makes me happy.

So just how far could we push this device anyways

Would a trimmed version of Windows 10 be preferrable? What about other performance boosters?

I've trimmed my build of Windows 10 down but still have enough running to allow the Windows Store to run. I'm at 950MBs of RAM used on complete cold boot with Steam running.

I've done the regedit to allow High Performance mode in powercfg.cpl but it looks like it's ill-advised to enable. My device is throttling sooner causing overall performance to be down. I'll be modding my heatsink soon, hopefully that produces better results to where I can enable High Performance mode again.

I honestly think the best perf gains are gonna come from the BIOS. The ability to increase RAM frequency seems to be available but I'm scared to change it if it bricks my device and I don't currently know how to clear the cmos to force a default BIOS state.

The keyboard on that thing seems like such unnecessary clutter. Like it was designed 10 years ago or something, in the pre-iPhone era. Windows 10 has a built-in virtual keyboard, why not just rely on that?

With that said I hope this turns out good. I want one but I'll wait for first impressions. This could end up being very shoddy quality. If it had backing from an existing established non-Chinese hardware company I would order one immediately.

Have you tried using a virtual keyboard inside of a Steam game?

untagged spoiler: It doesn't work at best, at worst it pops you out of your game and forces a resolution change and crashes the system to a point where neither the game or keyboard work.
In most cases, not even phone games allow the phone keyboard to pop up and cover your screen
