inFAMOUS - The oFFicial Thread

Beat this game a week or two ago. Final assessment: Good but not great.

-Game difficulty overall- hard and frustrating (I played on easy)
-The story. Atrocious. Would have really just preferred superhero in a city fighting crime than all the nonsense.

Don't play InFamous ever again, please!
And ignore InFamous 2

The way the first one ended, they better make another one. The second one has so many awesome possibilities.

Think it's pretty much confirmed they are doing a 2nd one already since there was leak of new casting for Cole's new voice actor.

Just throwing in my 2 cents guys, no reason to get nasty. Like I said I liked it overall.

So maybe you found it a lot easier than I did, that doesn't invalidate my opinion that it was hard.

GAF gets so over defensive sometimes. :lol

It has to be global. How much does a game have to sell to not be considered a flop in terms of sales? 500k?

Considering it took them 3 years with a team just under 50 people probably $20-25 million was spent on development, they probably have to sell a million to be ok, I think 500k is kind of cutting it too close. It highlights the kind of risk publishers and developers are dealing with these days. Unless the development costs can be cut down significantly I doubt the market can survive another hardware transition.

I think the fact that Sony is aggressively bundling it AND dropping its price indicate that has made a comfortable profit it for them already.

I agree to this. They dont usually bundle losing games, only ones where further loss of sales will not affect the bottom line. An those that will never sell again because they are too old, which is not the case here.

I clicked this thread hoping for news on the Gigawatt Blades coming as DLC, and I leave happy
When I read Infamous DLC was coming and saw it was just Gigawatt Blades being given away, I was sad. Not that the game needs DLC, I'd rather a full sequel more. Damn news got my hopes up.

It's been very intersting to boot up inFAMOUS in between playing Assassin's Creed 2. Gameplay wise, Sucker Punch did a very good job on the controls. One thing i would like to see in inFAMOUS 2 is that Cole doesn't suck up to objects when "falling down" but rather let the player decide (by pressing a button for example), just like in AC2.

Also, i hope they build upon the flying aspect in this game. Loved that. Some sort of jetpack that let's you go vertically into the air and float for a while would be cool. Also, more high buildings to scale (loved the prison and trash building bits) and more platforming.

On the graphics side, i'd like a bit more color and superhero look to the surroundings. The 3 islands looked a bit samey and somewhat boring. The sewers for example looked bland compared to the AC2 tombs (i know, much bigger dev team and all),... I'd like to see a bit more Gotham city as it was portrayed in Batman Begins.

Lots of potential though and a great game overall.

Glad infamous did ok then. Great game and can't wait for the sequel.

You're right about dev costs though. They are getting crazy. Honestly, I wouldn't mind sticking with this gen for a long time. I know next gen would most likely have Crysis level graphics, but I honestly don't care. I went to my friends house and played Crysis on uber high settings, and it was beautiful. But then I just as easily went back home and popped in Uncharted 2 and MW2 and had absolutely no problem. I think this gen has hit the sweet spot in terms of graphics versus dev costs/dev time.

Same here. Its between this and Assassin's Creed 2 for me right now. Can't believe I haven't finished Infamous yet though - tis a crime.

And still need to try Uncharted 2.

Just received inFamous. Popped it in for 5 minutes, so far the framerate hasn't been holding up (hopefully this is a one-off). Bought it based on the fun I had with the demo + GAF recommendation.

The framerate is a tease when you're along the coast, because only then does it hit 60 fps (I think). Otherwise it must be 30, and I don't remember any big slowdown...

Got this and Arkham Asylum with my ps3 bundle. It's surprisingly good so far although I've only put a few hours into it (no spoilers please). So I was wondering how much of a real difference on the overall game does your good vs evil choice make? So far I'm playing the hero route Peter Petrelli style, but I have to admit the evil powers are pretty tempting.

Strictly speaking in gameplay terms (not story progression), the majority of the game will still play out the same way. There are a few differences in the powers that you receive. There is one power that is unique to good alignment, and another that is unique to evil alignment. Aside from that, a few of the other powers have some differences depending on whether you choose the good or evil branch. Most of the differences appear subtle at first, but become more pronounced later when you reach the more extreme levels of your chosen alignment.

Manufacturing costs($3) + retailer cut($12) would be about $15(I'm ignoring licensing fees since this is a 1st party game). So that leaves $45 per game to cover the budget, which you estimate to be $20-25 million. Selling 500,000 at that would net them $22.5 million. 1.2 million nets them $54 million.

Obviously those numbers are not 100% accurate, it differs on games/publishers/etc, but you get the general idea.

Basically, InFamous has done quite well for Sony and SP.

If you read their post-mortem, I think it's a small miracle it turned out as well as it did. The post-mortem might have been a little dramatic, but it sounds like this game had major troubles during development.
More than anything, this lack of focus represented us misapplying the prototype-test-iterate cycle that served us so well in tightening up gameplay. We worked on prototyping a bunch of innovative little gameplay scenarios, expecting that a clear vision of what the game should be would arise from the prototypes. It didn’t; we just ended up with a bunch of little prototypes that had nothing to do with each other. We were nearly a year into the development of what was ostensibly a combat-focused action game, but still hadn’t done any work on letting the player fire a weapon, or on having enemies that shot back!
"We wildly underestimated how difficult the transition would be from the bright and cheerful PlayStation 2 graphics of the Sly Cooper games to the gritty and realistic PlayStation 3 look of Infamous. In effect, we tried to take two steps at once. First, we needed to catch up with the realism in the best-looking PlayStation 2 games; second, we needed to match the even higher quality bar being set by the best teams as they moved to the next generation of hardware.

"This was a struggle on multiple levels. First, we had a technology gap to clear; the engine we used for the Sly Cooper games needed to be substantially rewritten to run on the PlayStation 3. We needed to rework our whole pipeline to accommodate things like vertex and pixel shaders. Unfortunately, we didn’t start this effort until after we completed Sly 3, leaving us without a pipeline or engine running on the target hardware for the first 10 months of product development.

"The lack of a working pipeline and engine made it a challenge for our art team to learn the new skills and techniques necessary to build the realistic content we needed for inFAMOUS. All our assumptions about how to build content needed to be revisited to match our new expectations and the capabilities of the new hardware. In addition, our art team needed to hone their skills building realistic content, and the lack of a working engine made this painful."

Cool. So I'm guessing the evil story branch will be worth a second playthrough. "Sylar style"! Sorry for all the heroes references but this is a superhero game afterall.:D

Once the gigawatt pack is released next week i'll be playing through on Evil- Normal Difficulty. I already had beaten the game on Hard with the good storyline so this should be easy!

Same here.
Although I beat it as Good on Normal difficulty and haven't played it since. I'll probably pick it back up when this DLC hit PSN.

Besides, the giga-blades feel like more of an evil power than a good one anyway.....

This is going to be the excuse to try and do my evil/hard play-through. I think I'll boot up the game this weekend and try to finish off the stunts and find all of the shards.

Holy. Shit. That was an amazing game. Even with it being out for months, I still managed to not get spoiled, and that ending was crazy. Can't wait to see what Sucker Punch comes up with for the sequel. It sucks that I have to return it to Gamefly tomorrow (using the two week trial, lol) but hopefully I can scrape some cash together to get the game soon so I can go back and finish all the side stuff and play as evil. Bravo Sucker Punch!

Just started today and an hour long game session turned into about 3. Something about the laid back pace and the bite sized side missions make it so inviting to keep playing. Everything is pleasant enough so far considering my character is gimped and I only have the douchebags with the rifles to deal with. :lol

You're in for a treat... What are you playing? Normal/Evil? It was such a blast getting Platinum for this game :D My advice if you plan to do that: do not leave an island without writing down how many shards you have picked up there. That way, it is slightly easier to know where the missing ones might be.

I'm playing as a good guy simply because I'm coming off Killzone 2 and I noticed that everything gets dark and red if you're evil, I need some fresh air as far as the setting. :lol

It would be a lot easier if the shards were on the map/radar like the dead drops, but I'm not too concerned with that at the moment.

They are. They are dark blue spots when you ping.

I have to admit I have Infamous (launch day purchase) and GTA IV (ditto) sitting in my pile of shame and I don't know why. Looking over this thread it's time for some open world gaming. :D

If you just want to have fun and see the game at its best, play on normal as evil. You dont have to worry about collateral damage and evil Cole spreads destruction like Paris Hilton spreads STDs. I might be exaggerating slightly for effect but still playing evil Cole is some seriously fun shit. Good Cole is awesome too but you're more focused on not hurting civs and that holds you back from unleashing holy hell on everything in sight.

and now I think I might have to play some tonight...

Put a lot more time in today, unlocked the second island. Compared to other open world games(superhero or not) the one thing that infamous does remarkably well is shooting. It's fun and it looks great. Speaking of which, the game looks really, really good. It's no technical marvel, but I love the art direction. My only complaint is that the second island doesn't look so different from the first, atleast that's my first impression. I was hoping for distinct neighborhoods. And as far as I'm concerned, the more platforming the better. Scaling the prison wall all the way up was excellent, I need more of that and more difficulty!

I'm really happy to see Infamous made a decent chunk in profit. It's definitely in my top ten for this year, lots of fun. Especially being able to zip around the islands at such speeds made going to new missions a lot less of a chore (similar to Crackdown in a way). The combat mechanics were really satisfying too. I get bored in games like GTAIV and AC2 because it often takes such a long time to go back and forth to locations you've already been at numerous times.

I don't think graphically it was amazing, but it was fun and I do hope they really push it with the sequel.

Made good progress through the second island today. The game is really starting to take shape. Now that I'm fighting some of the more supernatural enemies and have the ability to recharge on the fly, it's really opened up.

It does so many little things well that most open world games just gloss over in the hope that the sum of of it's parts will equal more as a whole. The action is very well executed, but you don't have to steamroll over every bad guy in sight, you can flank around if you get tired. Sucker Punch knows when a particular mission type is stale so there's plenty of little twists and turns to the formula. There is no 50 combination move set, every power is simple and effective so you don't revert back to a particular formula of combat. All these little touches show craftsmanship and really add up to make a better game.

There's some technical issues to hammer out. There is a good bit of slowdown and the float next to wall until Cole has something to grab climbing system needs to go, but these are not game breaking flaws. The one thing that I was expecting that hasn't happened is a real terrain change from island to island. Yea there are more shanty towns and shipyards on the second island, but it doesn't make much of a difference. I'm hoping atleast for some sky scrapers on the third island. Even the means of quick transportation is exactly the same.

Just got my Infamous Platinum Trophy today. When I rolled up on that last blast shard I was so happy. Thanks to my wife for helping me locate these. :lol

Loved this game. Will def buy a sequel if there is one. I also had fun reading billboard and store signs. SP put a lot of detail and effort into this game.

I was short 2 shards and I was going around looking for them, but I found 2 on the same building. I wish they reduce the number 350 is tooo much. I Like the good powers better.

Wholeheartedly agree! I played as good the first play through, it was very fun and satisfying. Playing as evil though removes all those barriers and you can just unleash hell on every thing and anybody without repercussions. It's really fun.

I'm only about 1/2 way through, but how can getting all the shards be that difficult? They give you an all-seeing radar (which I've declined to use so far in the name of exploration). In fact, if I had designed the game I would've probably limited the radar to only highlighting the general sections of a district with shards left, rather than specific shard locations, or only activated the shards on the radar after the main quest was completed.

Wait until you have 1 shard left.

I don't have a problem with the number of shards but I wish there was a counter on each island so it would be easier to look for the last few I need. I haven't played this in a long time because I lent it to my cousin so I'll try to Plat it now.

That's probably when I'll start using the radar. ;)

On a serious note, it is much easier to find the shards at night. There have been several I went right by during the day and only noticed later re-treading old ground at nighttime.

And when that time comes you will laugh at your original post. I spent hours looking for that last shard.

Ohh, famous last words......

How do the shards work at the end? If I finish the story mode, is it over? Should I pick up everything before finishing the story?

I am on the
baloons
mission and I am going to guess its right near the end based on the cutscenes in the previous mission.

I had only 187 going into the third island, so it will be a while to get everything.

You can continue playing after the story is over.

What everyone else said. I gave up on my second run of the game mostly because of the Shards. I completed the first island, but that took hours, and then when I got to the second, I was just burned out.

If you care about getting a plat, use that radar and pay attention to the shards right from the get-go. I ignored them completely my first run-through the game. Bad idea. Instead of just tearing through the game on Evil/Hard, I was running around for hours looking for shards. It gets old fast.
