I'm playing bad.
It's not the story that is the issue so much as the writing. The story concept and plot are fine in concept, it's just the implimentation. I enjoy some of Zeke's dialogue, but beyond that it really seems like a lot ot the writing for the game simply wasn't reviewed, and/or whoever wrote it fought to keep in their favorite bits, rather than accepting that sometimes the lines that you love don't really fit. Like somebody was unwilling or unable to "kill their darlings."
I also feel like the moral choices are over-simplified, and I'm dissappointed that they don't really have any specific effect on the game (asside from the general reactions of a karmic shift.)
I do believe, though, that the awesome gameplay more than makes up for the poor quality of the writing.
One thing I have to say is, the game is all presented with "comic book characters". I think the writing absolutely fits the source material. I'd really hate to be presented this comic book universe, with all of these tongue in cheeck character designs, and then be hit with writing that takes itself too seriously.
Also, in reference to your second point, I feel your choices to effect the gameplay to some degree.
Playing evil makes you extremely destructive, and more or less changes the way you interact with enemies and bystanders. When you're inFAMOUS, throwing out grendades causes massive damage, so you have to be more cautious so you don't hurt yourself. You also don't have to be as accurate, because you get huge splash damage, so it's more about destruction and mayhem.
Playing good seems to focus more on accuracy, and I felt I had more options for ranged combat and close combat alike.
That said, I really don't understand the point. What exactly could you ask for that would contribute to the good / evil system? At some point, you begin to make things too complex and ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with being presented two clear cut options here, IMO.
Lastly, the two different characters do play differently. Playing good inherently gives you a role, and you ultimately follow it. I found myself intentionally keeping destruction to a minimum to reinforce my postiive karma. Healing people, etc. Playing evil, I had absolutely no concern for anyone but myself, I was just lobbing explosives everywhere killing everyone. I never once worried about charge points because I'd just bio-leech a bystander or enemy and fill up. I found both types played differently enough to warrant the "good bad" system.
SIDE NOTE: I see folks talking about how many shards they have / haven't found. Where can this info be found?
