Intel releases HDMI stick that runs Windows 8.1 ($149)

So, no more virtual machine on mac? Would this be a better solution?

Oh, I just realized it doesn't have an ethernet port. What a shame. Was thinking about getting one and using it as an extremely energy-efficient desktop PC. But lack of ethernet kills it.

So, anyone familiar with the CPU, what kind of emulation capabilities are we looking at here ?
Not interested in anything beyond psone, to tell the truth, and arcades (mostly late 80's and 90's stuff, with the occasional fairly recent cave shooter)
But I want my emulators with lots of modern shaders.

The system easily emulates ps1. The processor can run crysis
on ultra low

Any ideas on price?

EDIT:

$149. I wonder how much in the UK.

Read first page, posted a bunch of youtube videos in one of the posts of a tablet that runs a similar CPU to the stick (The stick might be be better and run CherryTrail)

Some examples of what a $99 tablet can do (HP Stream 7):

Half-Life 2
PPSSPP
Skyrim
Crysis
TF2
Fallout 3
Counter-Strike: Source
UT3

Doesn't Linux have XBMC?
XBMC/Kodi is on EVERYTHING!!

Probably with this for media center is control/remotes. Majority of aftermarket remotes suck.

While this is awesome for Media Center, once HEVC decoding is built into some chips you really won't need the extra horsepower that this provides over a future Fire TV or Roku.

This is as good as bought. The raspberry is retiring in march.

I just hope there's a convenient solution for playing and queuing music from a tablet/phone without having to turn on the tv, like yatse for xbmc etc.

As a general idiot who thinks they know what this is but might not, I ask this question: This sounds like it's similar to the Playstation TV, but with an intel chip and Windows on it. Is that approximately accurate?

If so I guess it wouldn't be the worst thing to have a micro PC to carry around, especially since it could do cloud stuff from my desktop and laptop. Not exactly expecting a ton of performance, though. Ooh, or load games, shove it into a TV and use a Dualshock4!

Replace pstv with Chromecast and you are correct.

For a HTPC I really don't know what "extra power" is actually going to afford you. The media decode engine in Bay Trail is just as good as you'd find in a high end GPU. Unless you want to play modern games natively, you're not going to notice much difference between this and far more expensive machines. Size, noise, and power draw are all important attributes for a HTPC and this device is best in class for all of them.

Genuine question then, will we be able to stream 4k comfortably on this thing when we all finally make the move to that resolution and our bandwidth allows it?

Streaming games from a local PC is also a major draw, and it's a much more capable media box than a Playstation TV.

I agree. How can we steam stream to it if its wifi. LAN or bust!

I have a similar tablet that I got on this last black friday, and it runs steam home streaming like a dream... also for media playback is a monster... it can play 1080p hi10p animes without trouble

Looks nice, but not for 150$... That was the price of my tablet, and it has battery, touch screen, and also included 1 year of office for free. It should be less like 60-99 dollars tops

I agree, but if we get confirmation of Cherry Trail, then this thing is worth the $150. It'll destroy your tablet in GPU performance. It'd be worth it for gaming alone.

Score! Actually that's pretty freaking awesome. I could actually carry around my multimedia content and at run it anywhere. Would be able to just carry one of these around instead of having a laptop. Could use literally any display and I'm assuming you'll be able to rig up a smartphone or tablet as an input device.

This is an interesting take on "cloud computing". It'll grab stuff in/out constantly via Windows but it actually has onboard processing power. That's been a hold-up that just streaming doesn't cover since we're still ages from having proper speeds and latencies worldwide.

Grab a linx 7" from ebay for £60 - brain_stew pointed it out to me last week. same processor, full windows 8.1. You could attach it to a DS4 with a nyko clip and use it for emulators or steam home streaming - or hook it up to your TV.

there are bound to be ways to just add things to a playlist. But if not, you can just VNC in with something like teamviewer and remote control it headless

Something like this could be extremely handy, and at such an affordable price I'm almost tempted to get one. Alas I think I'll wait until they can get them going straight off HDMI power and with a bit more RAM. Still this is a brilliant idea! If I can use something like Roccat or whatever to create a good interface on my mobile then this will be a great quick use tool for my tv etc.

This is one of the coolest products I have seen in years. If the prices are what they are listing then I very likely will grab one. Any idea of a release date on this?

So, for those primarily wanting to emulated 5th gen and below, this totally DESTROYS any other android console box or stick, right?
Stick? Surely. Console box? Probably, but not as much as you'd expect. It's Atom after all, which is cool and all, but certainly not close to Core 2. Now interestingly enough, you can get non-negligible performance boost if you compile your code specifically for Atom, however even Gen 5 emulators commonly use dynarec, thus making it very non-trivial.

This is awesome.. I love this whole idea of HDMI devices. Use my chromecast almost everyday. Very interested seeing this in action and UK price.

I would expect a package version including the MS all in one keyboard, i have one and it really is a nice little living room PC keyboard (and it really is totally water proof :D) - it would make perfect sense having the 2 together in a package..

If it has 2 usb slots (which it probably will) That would make a great MAME emulator which I could take on to my friends and have some co-op Beat em up fun.

This is neat, but you can get a tablet with the same specs for around the same price?

Don't buy that apple, I can sell you this sweet orange! (Tablets aren't really relevant to someone who wants a HTPC or thin client.)

What the fuck? A 24 dollar raspberry pi with openelec or xbmc installed does that on less than a watt of juice.

The RPi is neat, but (having used one for Openelec) too limited for my liking. I'll only run a Windows based HTPC these days - can't beat the range of streaming options and other utils you can run.
