io9:'New Mutants' Has Found Its Sunspot, But Why Are Marvel and Fox Whitewashing Him?

Race, ethnicity, and nationality are separate things. In an extreme example, for instance, he could be 100% Brazilian, but that doesn't mean he could be cast as Pele.

If you want to say "they aren't staying true to his character" I'd understand that.

But I don't think this qualifies as "white washing."

I don't see how this is even in the same league as Emma Stone or Scar Jo playing Asian characters.

This is less a Fox thing and more of a Marvel thing. I doubt it was even conscious - with his recent appearances after years MIA, I imagine artists were told "draw a sexy Brazilian," they put him on the white end of the spectrum, and editors just shrugged and passed it along.

If you don't tell artists, specifically, to draw a character as black, they usually won't. People default to white. Unconscious bias.

Fox did the same thing - looked for "sexy Brazilian" actors and found a light skinned one. Unless they specifically were looking for Afro-Brazilian, they would probably just pass them over... and recent art references didn't give them any reason to do so.

Some times artist just don't know how to draw anything other then black and white

Honestly artists in general at least in Big two can be bad with skin color which causes inconsistencies as a result.

Yeah for if you are not as black black as Cage and Storm or just white expect some problems with skin colour

I'm a lightskinned black brazilian guy, in the north I'm called white (which is dumb), in Buenos Aires I'm black.
A pure white brazilian or pure black brazilian is a rarity in the country because every white is black and every black is white (One of the sayings says: "Every brazilian has a feet in the kitchen").
Calling Henry Zaga, white considering he's brazilian is dumb even for brazilian. Heck! They call this Bruna Linzmeyer white when is known her gramps by her mother side is afrodescendant:

guess the race

LATINXGEEKS is making this outrage just because of SKIN color, shouldn't have to matter at all. As long the movie states his father is afrodescendant everyone will get the picture that he's a mixed race.

Mixed race means that he is both parents ancestry, calling him just afrobrazilian is ignoring all his family rich history.

A little offtopic: My mother considers herself a black woman (actually she is mixed too, all my family is). When she visited the USA, many white people and even the latinos considered that she was black, but many black people considered that she wasn't black enough.

Don't know if made my point, my english it's pretty rusty :/

EDIT: They hired an american actress (Taylor) to play an Russian character (Magik, and no one is complaining about that).

It fits with a universe where an American plays Wolverine, Magneto randomly has Irish dialect, and Colossus was played by a super American guy and actually called Peter.

Hell in some comics unless folks say his name, Amadeus Cho would just be a white kid hanging around

It's as if they hired Meg Ryan to play Lana from Archer. Why does it matter? They are both American. It should be good enough.

You heard it here first, America annexed Australia. Now we have Florida and Australia.

You can't really say that he even fits current Sunspot because they changed him to be dark skin in his most recent appearance in US Avengers.

So they hire a Brazilian actor to play a Brazilian character, but he's still not dark enough.

Okay.
Almost like they had 2 choices
Someone from slave decent and one from Spain/Portugal/French/England invading times and took the lighter of the 2.

Like Hollywood is known for taking the lighter options for decades

So hiring Chris Pine to play Jackie Robinson would be okay because they are both American?
Micheal Cera will play Shaft one day!

ur kidding right?

No. He's a Brazilian person who looks like the character. Shit most characters in these adaptations are only vaguely matched. And in adaptations Hollywood shouldn't be expected to find a perfect match when that's just not realistic. So in this case it's far more accurate than most.

Look at Logan. Wolverine. People applaud the selection of a tall-ass Australian for a short Canadian guy. Or Nick Fury because while black, Jackson played the character perfectly.

And lord this is not white washing. He's a fucking Brazilian actor who is a spitting image of the character. Just stop making something that isn't a thing into a thing. It's tiring.

as a brazilian, as long as this fella plays soccer, practices capoeira, knows how to samba and drinks caipirinhas, I´ll allow it. And he should live on a beach or something.

Because Fox has been great with people of color in these movies.

Brazilian, Canadian and Australian are not races. That is not the issue with white washing for the love of christ.

Lots of faces that I didn't saw on BrazilGAF ! Venham dar um alô !

I personally think they should have hired like this :

Dark Skinned Brazilian > Dark Skinned whatever > White Brazilian

Receiving racism on brazil is an important part of the character and that dude would NEVER receive racism here

Maybe we should call it lightwashing to make it easier for people to understand the issue. There's a reason Beyonce did what she did.

Years of therapy to forget reignfire. All gone.

That Connor.
Note to the colorist: "he's kind of black"
Colorist: magic lasso > fill with color. "That will do the job."

Racism still is a huge issue in Brazil even though people love to downplay it or deny its existence, claiming that everyone is mixed. But I bet that if we both entered a store, my black Brazilian ass would be the one followed by security or ignored by the staff. Fucking bullshit

I mean, in this specific instance. Marvel created the problem, Fox just chose not to fix it. Still a sin but a lesser one.

Wasn't really disagreeing with that, just saying Fox could totally have reversed that problem. That they didn't is very much a continuing issue that Fox has had with representing any character that isn't white in a significant light.

He was always black Brazilian from his inception for at least a decade following.

In the classic New Mutant / X-Men in Asgard crossovers (with epic artwork by Art Adams), the Warriors Three called him "Shadowskin" for god's sake.

Have you guys watched the Fox X-men films?

Did you really think this dude would be brown skinned?

He has to be white just to get more than 6 speaking lines
