Pretty hyperbolic rant, ironic that you're calling others zealots...

Did you backup before you updated?

yes i did, and it does not work at all. always an error or it does it half way. phone has apps that are not even on the phone. ghost videos and ghost playlists. i do a lot of banking and finance on my phone so i used a few apps for it. i go to the app store it says "installed" i look throughout my phone and it is not. so there is a disconnect somewhere. i try to back up and get an error -50 whatever that means

this might be my last iphone. i lost everything.

I don't see the need for jailbreak anymore. My main reason for JB was Lockinfo but notifications are doing that job decent enough. I will miss SMS for texting though. Still shits all over the default app.

As for the upgrade process, it was hardly smooth. I lost all my apps and music. Thankfully I was able to download all the apps and music again but music I had transfered from other sources is gone, gone. I think have it on a HDD somehwere so I'll have to manually sync that up at some point. Atleast, I don't have to touch itunes again for future updates. It was worth the trouble just to not have to deal with itunes again.

So far I'm finding new little things here and there which are very nice touches. So far, so good.

lol yeah noboby is jumping on you, Mercury. We're only on the second page of them freaking out because you dared disturb their moment of update-zen.

With the sheer amount of Apple updates that landed yesterday I would've been more shocked had everything gone completely smoothly tbh.

Definitely. Although I updated my iDevices with the GM and everything went smoothly so I wouldn't know there. The Mac updates released yesterday went fine however.

i cannot believe i am here again at 1am with this crap. i thought that i downloaded the update while at work i can come home and easily get this done. no itunes need to f me over.

sucks to hear some of you are having a tough time with the update. i updated 3 of my devices flawlessly, zero data loss.

if it helps any, i performed a backup and then restored using that backup. got all my apps back and a fresh insttall of ios 5. i'm on a mac as well, is this some PC isolated problem or are other Mac users having a tough time?

You're absolutely insane. You can always tell a troll when they pull out the 'zealot', and 'religious' cards, often mixed with 'cult' and 'obsessive'. I looked over the last page and tried to find who 'jumped' you, or who got 'crazy in the face' and came up with nothing. All I saw was with post after post of angry ranting and 'FUCK APPLE', and questioning the sanity of anyone who liked Apple, using condascending and patronizing language, as if you know something they don't. When people asked you to politely stop generalizing, that their experience went fine, that your experience may not reflect the mainstream, and even offering to help, you accuse them of being rabid Apple fanboys or insinuate they're irrational zealots. The're absolutely nothing rational about any of your posts, assuming that everyone must be having the same shit experience as you.

The only zealot I see here is you. It's sickening how you need to break out the whole 'religious cult' shit, and purposely try to misrepresent people's responses to you in order to tarnish them.

Oh, and when I run into an issue, I usually try to methodically troubleshoot it, instead of running to messageboards and uselessly making post after post of blind rage insulting all users of that product/company.

I agree. You would think he's bad mouthing a religion or something. What with the language he uses and all.

It seems like Apple has abandoned the Apple TV2. I mean I realized they updated to ios5 and provided airplay mirroring and a couple other small features like photostream, but that's it.

After the pain in the ass that it was to upgrade to iOS 5, officially no less, it's been smooth sailing since. My iPhone 4 also seems to be much smoother now, anyone else feel this?

That's actually the biggest software update the Apple TV has ever had.

They can abandon it after they release a 1080p version running with an A5 processor.

It doesn't seem abandoned at all to me. It's entire purpose is to serve as a content catcher for iTunes. The added features (Flickr, the sports networks, etc) are really icing on the cake as far as Apple is concerned. It'll never have an App Store, as I think Apple would prefer that you just buy apps on your iDevices and AirPlay them to the TV.

The only major feature it is really missing, and I'm honestly shocked it isn't in there yet, is support for Hulu+. A whole bunch of lesser devices support the service, as well as both the iPad and iPhone (there's even Hulu Desktop for the Mac). It's kind of shocking that they haven't come to a deal yet. I am assuming the stumbling block is probably that Apple wants users to have an option to sign up for Hulu+ directly from the AppleTV, so they can take their 30% cut. That will never happen. The only reason Netflix gets a pass on this is probably because they are Netflix and a content streaming box without Netflix support is basically worthless.

Edit: I'm updating my iPad from 5.0 GM to 5.0 public right now, and then after that switching my MobileMe account over to iCloud, in preparation for getting my shiny new 4S tomorrow (scratch that, TODAY since it is after 12AM!).

My comment ws before all the bickering, but since Lius Kang is in the thread maybe he can get me to understand

I originally had a x@mac.com AppleID, then got a x@me.com email address. When I just moved to the cloud it said I was signed in as x@me.com, but after the move my Mac and iPhone are saying the account is x@mac.com, so I have everything except my emails.

I can't sign into the mac iCloud pref panel as x@me.com, only on the website. I am not sure what I have done wrong

Also nothing has synced to the cloud, bookmarks aren't available on my iPhone (especially my reading list), etc.

Can anyone point out what I did wrong?

Cheers

You're wasting your time. The GM is completely identical to public release.

neojubei: A practical solution if you have any other backups. I had a similar problem on my iPad and so did a friend of mine on his iPhone 4.

What I did to get my data back:

Put the device into DFU mode and Restore the phone back to a 4.X version of iOS (I used 4.3.5 for my iPad 2 WiFi).

Load your back up onto it once the Restore is complete. I suggest using an older back up if you have it in case your current one is corrupted.

Now, make a new back up with iTunes 10.5.

Update the device.

That's all I can offer you.

Now, I did ask a WiFi syncing question I guess in the middle of all the Jr. High bitchfighting, and it got totally overlooked. I guess I'll come back tomorrow once you ladies finish having it out.

How's WiFi Sync working for you folks on Windows? For me, iTunes will only detect my iPhone and iPad about 30% of the time. Of that, half the time when a WiFi sync is started, the computer and the device will lose connection to each other and the device will disappear.

I've tried re-installing iTunes, rebooting my phone, restarting my Apple services (Apple Mobile Device, Bonjour, and iPod Helper services).

Not good. I turned it off and will just USB Sync.

Sure this has been asked, but I'm having trouble syncing conversations in iMessage between my iPod Touch and iPad. Anyone have any tips? I have them both set to the same email (my AppleID) and they don't seem to be working too well together. I have part of the conversation on the iPod and the other on the iPad. Tried closing the conversations and starting a new one but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I'm expecting my 4S tomorrow and I was hoping I could have everything working together by then.

How nitpicky would it be of me to be surprised that Apple went with the same default wallpaper for iOS 4 and iOS 5?

So I have a Canadian friend (lol i know right) and if he texts me, he gets charged since it's international.

We not both have iOS 5. Will that still apply? The international thing? Or is he safe to use iMessage with me now?

from this point forward i am backing up to the icloud. itunes is the worst piece of software i have ever used in my life.

I'm sorry to hear that this is happening to you. I may have missed if you already said so or not, but are your contacts, texts, background, etc preserved and just your apps/music/etc missing?

If so, I don't know what causes this, or when Apple changed the way they store backups, but this may be fixable, very easily.

I had this happen to me, and I am not sure why, but all my apps were missing. I plugged my device is, and went to then apps tab. I selected sync apps, and then checked the apps I wanted back on my device. After syncing, much to my surprise not only were the apps in the location they were prior to the update, but all their data was preserved. I don't remember iTunes syncing apps this way before, but I've never been a frequent sync-er. I don't know what caused it to not happen automatically after updating to ios5, but I was glad all my data was intact.

Why don't you give this a try and report back.

I have iMessage working between my iPod touch and my iPad. I am using a different Apple ID on each one. Works great.

Sorry for such a silly question, but I can't seem to get iOS 5 to download. I have the latest version of itunes, but i'm not getting anything. It keeps saying that 4.2.1 for my iPhone 3GS is the latest version.

Weird, I was going by what I found on this site, which is just about the only thing I could find on Google about how to get it to work:

"But how do you set-up iMessage to sync across your iOS devices? Easy, you just need to make sure that your Apple ID is your Caller ID in all devices you want to sync. To do this, just go to Settings>Messages."

http://idarwindaily.wordpress.com/2011/10/14/sync-imessages-between-your-iphone-ipad-and-ipod-touch/

I'm officially lost, glad you it's working for you though though. I'm going to keep playing around with this.

I wish Apple would've moved the volume indicator icon to the side of the screen or somewhere less conspicuous. I still can't believe they chose to put it right in the middle of the screen.

Settings -> Messages

On my iPad the Receive At setting is my iCloud Apple ID. On the iPod Touch the Receive At setting is my daughters iCloud Apple ID.

Anyone know how much data iMessages will be consuming? I have a 500mb/month limit, and before iOS 5 I was using about 350mb/month. So assuming I'll still do the same stuff, I'll be having about 150mb remaining.

That should be sufficient for iMessage data right? I plan to use the iMessage quite a bit as well

Normal text messages are 140 bytes. I think you'll be fine.

I FINALLY figured out why my phone wasn't auto syncing when I tried to charge it and it was thanks to Lui Kang!

Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:
iCloud wifi sync.

When I read this response I realized that I only had 5GB of storage on the cloud which didn't even cover the camera roll on my phone but I had it turned on anyway.

So anyway, I turned off iCloud backup and set my iTunes to sync my phone from my computer and now it works! Apparently the only way I can get auto-sync when charging is to buy enough space to cover all my stuff.

At least I got it working. Not sure if any of that made sense, it's pretty late. LOL

This happened to me. Press the update button. You'll get a dialogue box asking you if you want to update to iOS 5.

For some reason iTunes gets confused if you aren't on the very latest pre-5.0 update. You should still get 5.0 rather than the version mentioned.

I had no issues updating my 4 and my wife's 3GS. Loving iOS5, the only thing that I don't like is that they got rid of the iPod app and split it into music and video.

Same boat. I really wish it was a user option to have where I wanted the videos.
