I'm sure this has been asked before but how do i set up a group chat for imessage (similar to how they work on BBM). I tried Google but only really found posts confirming it was in there. I may be missing something obvious i guess, but none of my friends saw it either
compose text message, add more then one recipient...

Tried waiting after backup restore but nothing happens. Apps aren't synced and the synchronize button is still greyed out. Here's what it looks like in iTunes. (shows apps on page 3-7 but empty in the bar below + no apps on the actual iPad)

Sync button still greyed out.

Anyone any suggestions?

Damn, all my calendars got duplicated somehow. How do I fix it?

EDIT: never mind, just figured it out... I unchecked "All on my iPhone", leaving only the stuff on my iCloud. Which was the same stuff.

Hmm. Notifications still shows two of everything, though.

I had to deal with this too. Basically what happened was you created an iCloud account which duplicated your calendar in the cloud and put that on your phone. That one isn't updating yet, though. You have to go into ical and create an account and use your iCloud account. That'll create duplicate calendars again. Delete the first calendar that was only on your computer. Now you have 1 account on you computer that's only the iCloud stuff. Now you need to tell iTunes NOT to sync from your mac, otherwise you'll still have 2 things on your phone.

It's all really freakishly obtuse for an apple product and I have no idea why they did it this way.

But when we tried that we weren't all tied into the group, and it wouldn't let us message to all the group together, just back to the original sender

Anyone who wanted this should have been using Google Calendar to begin with IMO.

On a different note, anyone else annoyed that the New York Times app is forcing you to move it to Newsstand?

i noticed that apple is still bringing out apps that have designs that represent real things like a leather book etc.. i hate that shit, why are they bringing real world designs into a digitial world. You can do so much more with the UI when you are not limited to real world ideas. Not to mention, it looks ugly.

Does your Iphone have to be activated with a cell phone carrier to use Imessage? I cannot get it to activate
i assume imessage is just a im client is it not? now you may need to use a email linked to a apple id kinda like facetime but i don't see why you would need to be using something connected to a carriers network. The whole point of imessage is to get passed all of the carrier bullshit and just use the internet for text messages.

Worked flawlessly for me, but I was using MobileMe prior and not syncing that kind of data using iTunes. My only complaint is that iCloud keeps my automator actions calendar in iCloud so all my automations appear on my iPad and iPhone, when it is only useful for the computer to have that info.

Phoenix4: There should be a check box labeled something like "Sync Apps", then select the apps you want to sync with the check box next to the app's name. The data for the apps should sync when the app syncs - this solved my problem after updating. My iPhone/iPad didn't automatically restore my apps I had prior to the update, I had to add them back.

I'm guessing this has likely been answers 100's of times in this thread already. How come I can't add events to my calendar anymore? Do I have to somehow be adding the events through an iCloud app? The only thing I have synced to my iCloud is "Reminders" and "Find my Phone".

I am liking iOS 5 quite a bit. It makes my 3GS run faster, the iMessenger is cool, and I love the notifications. Seems there are just a few odd issues. iCloud is definitely more complicated than I would expect from an Apple update.

EDIT: NEVERMIND

Had to sync calendars, turn the phone off, turn the phone on, turn off sync calendars and now I get my '+' symbol in calendar app.

Wondering if anyone else is having this issue...

I just turned on iMessage for the first time, and whenever I do that, instead of showing the name of the contact at the top of the message logs, it shows the phone number. But, when I turn iMessage off, it goes back to showing the contact's names. Even though my name shows up for them in their message log, it doesn't for me. Am I missing a setting, or something? Anyone have this same issue?

Google Voice has been crashing consistently since installing iOS5.

Edit: Yeah this is how it is. Second page is Stocks followed by the Utilities folder (Contacts, Calculator, Compass, Voice Memos)
Perfect. Thanks so much for indulging my OCD.

when it's syncing, you are correct. but at that first "restoring" after the upgrade the sync wheel IS NOT there. because it wasn't there on my 3gs my restore went........ poorly....... but I also didn't have a window there on windows I don't think. On Lion there was a window there saying restoring and again, no sync wheel. but I left my wife's phone alone (not risking her wrath) and the only annoyance in her upgrade was that her screens/organization were slightly jacked.
I fell victim to this. After a while, I checked my phone for progress (from behind my laptop) and didn't see any indicator, so I disconnected it. Didn't get any of my music on so I reconnected and it tried to resume. Instant error prompt. From there, iTunes seemed to think the music had all been moved to my phone no matter what I tried. I ultimately did a restore and that was fairly seamless, except my apps got reset. Kind of a blessing in disguise cuz some of my apps needed it, and Beejive got bogged down and buggy when I matched usernames to phone contacts.

I think this screwed alot of people. I remember getting worried about my apps not opening up while iTunes was still restoring my music and videos. I decided to just wait until iTunes finished up what it was doing and after it was finished, everything was fine.

Mine has been "restoring apps" from iTunes for the past 30 minutes. How long does this take? Also, it was putting the apps right back to where they should be, but not its just loading them up on my screen, 7 pages now worth of apps.

Also, none of my music is showing either.

I did the "put Newstand in a folder" trick and it work, hehe.
Tried to open it in the folder and it crashed.

I want it out of the folder anyway but just wanted to see what would happen.

So it appears that everytime I come home, my phone and iPad automatically are syncing with iTunes through wifi. I don't mind it at all

but I'm just worried that I'll probably tend to forget to press this icon

and It might screw up things when I leave the wifi zone (or disable it and go to 3G)

Do you guys think it'll screw up my devices?

Question about backups on iCloud...

How long does it take for you guys? Mine currently says 9 hours :S

Also, I have the 5GB storage space. What happens if my back up is more than that?

Where do you see the time? If you back up more than that, it will tell you it won't be able to back up and to either remove some data or to buy more storage.

States it when i go to iCloud in Settings and choose to backup from there.

Looks like my comixology app is 1.4 GB. Wont back that up I guess

I guess thats why it was taking so long.

Setup iMessage in my iPad but when somebody sends me a message, I also receive it on my iPhone .... Any idea what do I need to turn off in the iPhone?

Settings > Messages > switch iMessage to off.
That should stop iMessage messages being sent to your iPhone, and should only arrive on your iPad.

I hope not. I don't want to have to eject my devices every time I leave the house.

I don't do wifi syncs but sometimes if i'm in a hurry I just yank the fucker out of my MBP, nothings gone horribly wrong yet so I can't see it happening worse over wifi.

I'm just wondering if it is necessary?

Siri has been confirmed that it will run on iPhone 4 using a jailbreak

Originally, there was some speculation that Siri required a dual core processor (A5) to run. It appears that this is not the case.

According to iPhone hackers @iH8sn0w and @Gojohnnyboi, you’ll be able soon to install & enable Siri on your iPhone 4 thanks to the jailbreak community. Both the hackers were working to port iPhone 4S’ A5-only Siri feature on A4 devices as the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G.

Siri-Install-iPhone-4.png

The progress looks like to be going great. iH8sn0w has confirmed on his Twitter that Siri feature is not made for A5 devices only. In other words, it can be ported on A4 devices too.
Excellent news. Siri is not just compiled specifically for the A5 (s5l8940x) processor. Thanks @Gojohnnyboi
That’s good news for all iPhone 4 users who are not willing to buy an iPhone 4S. Since iPhone 4S’ biggest feature is coming to the iPhone 4, some people may not get it.

However, the iPhone 4S includes a lot of big features too as the powerful A5 dual-core processor and its 8 megapixel camera with 1080 video recording ability.

In case you want to get Siri on your iPhone 4, you’ll need to wait for a while so that the hackers can port it successfully.

Sorry, I was answering Shurs.

About iCloud, it is indeed neater to sync it only through the cloud, so you won't have two fields of 'from my mac / from iCloud', so if you have near-constant net access, uncheck contacts in iTunes.

Good news I suppose, just wonder how well it will run.

I have to imagine great because it's something that runs when you use it, not in the background and it's something that offloads stuff to a server in order to figure out your request. I see no reason why it won't run pretty well.

This is awesome news because it pretty much means the biggest differentiation between a 4 and a 4S is no longer an issue.

Also, isn't the processing mostly done on the server side? Looks like I may be jailbreaking my 4 soon for this.

Yeah, according to the Engadget review, Siri cannot run offline at all. Even the simplest of voice commands that were available in iOS before no longer work offline.
