This is going to sound really dumb, but how do I navigate within an audio file when using my iPhone? I've not once really tried to use it for music/podcast purposes, but when I play an audio file, there's no seek bar. The thing I thought was a seek bar is apparently a volume slider. Is there a way to turn on a normal seek bar?

Tap the screen, look at the top near the nav bar. You'll have repeat, shuffle, and genius ptions, as well as the seek bar.

Why are iCloud data numbers so random?

Backup Size: 2 GB
Next Backup Size 2.3 GB
Available Space: 2.6 GB

What?

Isn't Backup Size your current backup, Next Backup will be how much space you'll use once it does another backup, and 2.6 is how much you will have available after that next backup because you can consider the extra .3 GB used already even though the backup hasn't taken place yet.

But I just backed up and I still see those values (they were there before my backup).

what Marty said although that .4 Gb delta between current backup size and remaining space might be stored email messages or other synced data.

Ok been using it for more than a week now and I have to say that the iPhone4's battery life definitely seems worse under iOS5.

The battery life got much better after I reset the battery by draining completely and recharging, but even after that there is still a slight difference.

Probably only a 5-10% decrease but I am pretty anal about the battery life of my phone so I notice it.

Wonder if this is because of the increased use of notifications or if it will get better with more OS updates?

Did Bluetooth get switched on for you when you updated to iOS 5?

Whaat you lost me haha

the 5GB of space is used for your documents (e.g.: iOS iWork) your me.com email messages and your backups.

so if you have 5 GB space and 2.3 GB used for backups and 2.6 GB free, then .1 GB is being used for either Mail or documents.

Hmm ok.

I don't get why my backup and next back up sizes are different even though I have just backed up.

I'm synced up via the cables. It just says "Waiting to start". HELP!

Edit: I'm restoring. Fyi, for whatever reason it failed to sync.

Still doesn't work.

Like immediately? Or did you run an app between backing up and checking, some apps - especially if they have not been updated keep caches in non standard places so the caches get backed up. For instance Skype's backup on my iCloud account is 15.1mb, scrabble's is over 14mb. I know that a single match of scrabble does not require 14mb of space, it's obviously backing up some cached files.

So I'm trying out Newstand with Edge Magazine. Are other publications a better experience than this? I caved in and tried out a $5 magazine to see what it would be like and it really feels like it's just a PDF that I'm scrolling page by page. Even the index isn't great let alone the table of contents which is non interactive. On top of that, it just doesn't work well with being displayed on an iPhone. Maybe it would be more useful on an iPad, but if this is what Newstand is like, I just won't be using it at all on my phone.

Edge in iOS5 Newsstand looks like it's a straight up PDF.

At least Edge in Zinio has some nice features, such as converting pages to all-text for easier reading (with scalable font size). That's in fact how I read Edge on my iPad and my iPhone: I'll read the article as text-only, then switch to the graphical mode and look at the pictures & screenshots, etc. before turning the page.

Zinio also has a nice scrollable pop-up menu for easy navigation.

My only gripe with Zinio is they compress the images too much. I'd prefer they delivered larger downloads with higher res graphics. As it is, it's not *horrible*...But it leaves a bit to be desired.

Overall, I'd definitely suggest getting an Edge subscription with Zinio over Newsstand. I personally subscribe to both the print and digital editions of Edge. Being based in the U.S., I get the digital issue the day it comes out and can get a good jump on reading the issue as the print edition takes maybe a week, week and a half to be delivered (although during the holiday season I've had horrible delays as the magazine has been held up in Customs). In fact, that's why I originally purchased the digital edition, because I went 3 months without a print edition during a particularly nasty Christmas Customs nightmare.

That said, it's still a print magazine slightly re-configured for digital. Whereas something like EGMi is straight-up designed for digital and it shows.

The redesigned print edition of EDGE magazine that debuted at E3 in June reads MUCH better on iPad than the older design. I have no idea if that was intentional, but it is an improvement. If/when EDGE starts publishing for-digital by design I think we'll be in for a real treat.

I had that a couple times before.

restart iTunes, disconnect the iPhone from usb. (you can also eject the iPhone from iTunes, if the iphone is set for wifi sync)

hook everything back up again and try a usb sync. after that, it should be ok. wifi sync should also be ok if it had been borked before.

Great, thanks.

Nah I only turn on BT when I need it.

Battery life on the phone is still very good. But before iOS5 it was AMAZING and one of my favorite things about the phone. When I am at home I would turn off 3G because I had wifi and I could get about 10 hours of use of email, internet, texting and phone calls. If I was just on 3G I would get between 6-7 hours of use of internet and phone calls. Don't get close to that anymore. Probably lost an hour of use in either circumstance.

I can't verify but I have heard it is even worse on the iPhone4S.

Not encouraging. Hopefully Apple can amaze us with battery life on their next phone or even better with the next OS update.

I deleted an album from my iTunes, but it's still on my phone. How do I get it from my phone back to my iTunes?

I've tried syncing, etc, and it hasn't worked yet. Seems like this should be easier to do.

If it is from iTunes right click the device in the sidebar and select 'transfer purchases'.

It's not from iTunes. So when I transferred purchases it didn't work. I actually found another way of doing it though, but thanks.

I've got a new problem though. I'm having some problems getting certain artists to group together correctly in iTunes. Is this a known bug? I've tried everything possible to get Coldplay to be sorted together correctly, and nothing seems to be working. One particular album always gets separated. I highlighted all of them and edited the artist name to be identical, as well as grouping name. Still screwed up. :/

Got the same problem.

Glad to hear I'm not alone with this. I'm seeing several bugs like this on my iPhone as well as iTunes. On my iPhone I've got some albums that refuse to appear under the Artist category, but if I look at albums it's right there. I've also got albums that mysteriously list under the wrong letter in albums list. I've even removed them, put them back on, and they're right there under the wrong letter again. Kind of annoying, but I guess I'll just ignore it for now and hope for a bug fix coming soon.

My iPhone 4 seems to have slightly better battery life on ios 5, and I have everything on except bluetooth. Still making it easily through a day of pretty heavy use, and I don't see the 20% message nearly as often as I used to. I was jailbroken before that so that could be part of it.

My only problem right now is that my wifi (or USB) syncs never finish. They get to the last part and get stuck endlessly waiting for items to be copied over. I can only cancel the sync from the phone; from iTunes it endlessly tries to cancel.

I think it might be an errant piece of artwork but I have no idea which one and they all show up fine on both iTunes and the phone. Any suggestions?

Also, is there a way to make it auto sync anytime changes are made, like with iCloud? I've got my phone set to automatically sync with a few iTunes playlists, but I'd like the changes to be beamed out immediately without me having to manually sync.

For me this bug has existed for a very long time. I have a lot of tracks in Japanese, Chinese and other non Latin alphabet languages. For me, I have solved the problem by changing the name to something completely different and then changing it back. I'm not sure if this will fix your problem, but it does the trick for me.

So I just tried renaming all of my Coldplay tracks to "Colday", and I checked to see how they grouped. This time it separated out a different album from the rest! lol

So finally I renamed all them properly, but then I checked the "Grouping" box, and put the band name in that as well, and it worked!

Thanks for the tips.

wtf, just synced my phone right now and was astounded to see the "other" portion in my iphone took up an astounding 4 GB. Now I'm restoring my phone in hopes of getting that back to normal :/

I have heard that from others as well.

Don't know what to think about my and others decreased battery life.

The phone still gets great battery life, but I do notice and miss the 10% or so that I have lost. Still worth it just to lose the stupid notifications that used to interrupt whatever you were doing.

Minor app question..

What is the best free Media Streaming app for iOS? DLNA.. uPnP.. etc..

This is for streaming media from my PC to my ipod/iphone of course.

EDIT: Thanks anyway.

EDIT 2:music and videos in general.

Jailbroken with XBMC is the best. Everyone likes AirVideo but that's a paid app. VLC used to be available but I think it got pulled. I'm not sure you have much choice unless you want to pay or go jailbroken.

stream to me is a couple bucks and does the job well. air video is also nice but stream to me can handle music in addition to video.

the value for both these is that they work seamlessly over 3G with very little configuration needed.

What formats?

I must have missed the memo where it said iOS5 would let you use your device normally while it syncs. It's the secret-best feature. Love that I can sync my phone as I wander about my apartment listening to tunes..

So I finally replaced my old broken 2nd gen iPod Touch with a shiny new white iPod Touch with iOS 5 on it. Still getting used to it... Stuff seems to be happening accidentally sometimes.

I still don't understand what you're getting at. If you've set up a passcode, it requires the passcode when you try to leave the camera. It also doesn't show any of your photos in the photo viewer in the lock-screen camera mode. The only thing anyone with your phone can do without knowing your passcode is take pictures with it.

.

Has no one actually tried it?

If you press the home button you go back to the lock screen.

Shit...You are right.

But I think this only works if your auto-lock hasn't come into play i.e. if you use your phone, lock it, then swipe to open it doesn't ask for a passcode. Testing now

So how many people find reminders useful? I have a 3GS and it's just like a separate calender app I guess. Since I can't tell it to remind me at a specific location.

I have no idea why it exists. Just another useless app that I can't delete :-/

I disagree. Along with notifications, Reminders is the most important addition to iOS 5 for me personally. I use it a LOT. It's nice to have a to do list not tied to any specific date, time or timespan.

I NEVER used iCal/calender app for my reminders before, because too many of them are up in the air, I can't put everything with a due date etc.

Reminders are great, right now it's up there in the top three most used apps. I have a school list, general list, music list, and internet list (to remind me what I need to DL/update).
