I disagree. Along with notifications, Reminders is the most important addition to iOS 5 for me personally. I use it a LOT. It's nice to have a to do list not tied to any specific date, time or timespan.

I NEVER used iCal/calender app for my reminders before, because too many of them are up in the air, I can't put everything with a due date etc.

Reminders are great, right now it's up there in the top three most used apps. I have a school list, general list, music list, and internet list (to remind me what I need to DL/update).
Couldn't agree more. I even made a groceries list, which I use often. I tried using Calendar, before iOS5, for reminders and it sucked. Tried other apps but just didn't "get it". Reminders is simple, perfect, and location services are great for it (not all accurate as desired on 3G but it does work!).

At least you can put it into a folder, unlike Newsstand.

I think I might be tempted to use reminders if I had Siri, but I don't.

Apple bloatware.

I haven't read the thread, but is anyone else's device running slower and jerkier after updating to iOS 5? Especially the Music app.

Yes, and the (seemingly but non-verifiable) decreased battery life from day-to-day work has reared its head, as well as increased data usage.

That said, I entirely attribute it to the new features in iOS 5 e.g iCloud syncing, notification checking and what not, and put some the lagginess in the music and podcasts due to the increased strain on resources with the new stuff on the 3GS.

Well, it is a 3GS and 2 years old so it's not so much a complaint actually - I can live with it.

Reminders is an overdue Task List for me, so much so I've taken off all the other 'To-do' apps.

Reminders is great for me. Before I had to keep creating dummy calendar events to set up reminders. The new app is basically what I need and I've gotten good use out of it since the betas.

I've been getting random crashes in Safari on my iPad 1 ever since I upgraded to iOS 5. Happens 1-2 times a day. Haven't had any crashes on my iPhone 4, but I don't use Safari that much on it. My wife has an iPad 2 and hasn't mentioned anything about the browser crashing on her.

It just randomly closes the browser and dumps me back to the home screen. Its happened on a lot of different websites so that eliminates it being a certain website-specific problem only. It happens at different points after I load a page. Sometimes right after the page loads, other times it might happen a good 30 seconds-1 minute after a page loads right when I'm in the middle of reading something. Has anyone else been experiencing anything like this? Never had this happen until I upgraded to iOS 5.

iTunes Question - I just subscribed to a bunch of podcasts via itunes and nearly half of them don't have artwork. And when I click 'get album artwork' it won't do it. Whats going on? How do I correct this?

Also is this an ok place to ask questions like this or is there a thread dedicated solely to iTunes?

Exactly, all I would use is an app on my MacBook Pro called Anxiety, and since reminders I no longer use it. I want a menu bar reminders app on Lion now, though...

I love it. I was looking for a good list app, and now it's built in and works great. It's already helped me remember what I need at the supermarket on more than one occasion.

Thanks so much to people talking about bluetooth being turned on. I never would have noticed that.

Is there any way to hide or remove the "news stand" icon?

I have to say that I'm REALLY disappointed with the battery life on my iPhone 4 after updating to iOS 5.

I've been awake for an hour and had it charging all night and was at 100% and it's already down to 95% and I've barely used it.

I've tried changing all types of notifications and have it set to do the bare minimum I'm willing to put up with and it still drains like crazy. I do have my email set to fetch hourly but it fetches way sooner than hourly...maybe that's the problem? I have Push set to OFF.

Not sure there's anything else left to do besides hoping that Apple fixes it via update. :-\

I woke up this morning at 630 and my phone has been on airplane mode. It's 1130 now and my battery is at 86%. Ridiculous.

I don't have any of these battery problems you guys are talking about. not at all.

You've been using it for 3 hours or having it on stand by?
that answer should be obvious. nobody's phone will have 99% battery life remaining after 3 hours of continuous usage. come on.

the post he replied to implied he had that battery drain while not using the phone.

I tried a couple of cycles of use with battery going full to completely drained on my iPhone 4 with iOS 5. Most of the use was standard phone, email, browsing, a few games and maybe a steaming tv show or two.

Both times my usage average was around 6 hours. Standby was something like 16-20 hours I don't exactly remember. Seems decent, but I never tried it with the phone pre iOS5 so I don't know what the comparision would be.

Now my phone doesnt even fetch. Push and now fetch are fucked up. Restored the phone and same shit. Is this apples server problem or a hardware issue? Apple phone support is useless.

RevDM said:
I thought the battery life issue was just me. My phone wont make 24 hours with moderate use.
I have been complaining about it since day 1 but I don't know how widespread it is.

For me it is probably just a 10% drop, which definitely sucks, but doesn't make the phone unusable. But Apple has really spoiled with battery life. The stories that the 4S has worse battery life than the 4 is yet another reason why I will hold out for the next version (where hopefully Apple can do some magic and increase battery life yet again).

Anyone able to get vibrate patterns to work? I have set it up in contacts but when I text my friend via iMessage, the vibrate pattern is default.

Its possible, but you have to be quick.

Drag an app over another one to create a folder, while the phone is creating the folder, quickly drag the newsstand app over the folder and it will drop in.

The downside is that you can't access newsstand while its in a folder (doing so will cause your phone to reboot). As soon as you drag it out of the folder, it will work fine.

Guys, I'm a little confused as to why this has happened, but since resorting my phone for an iOS 5 upgrade, what used to be just a single folder of photos and videos, has split into 4 and it's made it an absolute nightmare to find anything. For example:

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\823WGTMA
Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\858HDJES
Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\860OKMZO
Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\965YOKDJ

Is there anyway to easily merge these back into just a single folder? And how would I know which of them the iPhone will save to?

I cannot cut and paste between the folders.

Thanks

Any insight on what's possibly going on? I know that the phone grabs my email way more often than hourly how I told it too. I have Push off and Fetch at hourly...doesn't seem to do it hourly though.

I used to have it set to manual before iOS 5, but I wouldn't think fetching hourly would almost double the battery drain.

Have you guys noticed any problems with playing music in ios5? It seems a lot slower to stop/start, and often jerks around between the two when I try to pause/play. Anyone else?

Ever since I updated to iOS5, I have not been able to send group messages. Every single time I try, I get a message delivery failure. I have tried turning off iMessage and resetting the device, still nothing. Group message is turned on in the settings. It doesn't work regardless of whether the user is an iPhone user or not. What gives?

Since I updated to iOS5, My iPhone is not playing sound out of right speakers that I plug into the headphone jack. I've had the problem with 3 pairs of headphones and a car's audio system. Is there a simply way to fix this or do I need to go to the apple store?

It sounds like there is a short or loose connection to your headphone jack. You probably need to take it in.

battery has always been amazing and I check mail manually, I set it to push hourly for the first time and was happy to get mail updates...... only to see my battery drop a percentage every time I looked at it

is push mail really that much of a battery killer?

Sorry for quoting myself, but I still hope someone can help me.

A bit off-topic and noobish question, but I hope someone can help me out:

How can I export my Outlook calendar at work and sync it to my iPhone/iPad? I don't have Exchange access for various reasons, but would like to transfer my appointments to my devices.

If you don't have exchange access to your work account, then you'll need to export your Outlook calendar to another service or program that can sync with the iPhone.

The best option is Google Calendar or iCloud so you won't be tied down by a program sitting on a single hard disk but rather in the cloud where you can edit it wherever and whenever. Just google how to export outlook to Google Calendar and then just import that into Google Calendar. And then to set it up on your phone, follow this: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=138740&topic=14252

They could've just built in reminders in Calendar imo.
This. I have a number of meetings I need to attend during the week. It would be nice to list the agenda of each meeting, and what should be accomplished. Apple has a bad habit of making new apps with features that would be better suited in an already existing app.

Here's a good explanation on the difference between Push, Fetch, how they work, and battery usage.

Is there anyway to turn it off completely for iCloud mails? I don't really want my phone checking my mail at all, unless I ask it to...

settings>Mail>Fetch New Data > Advanced > then pick your iCloud account and set it to manual.

it’ll only look for mail if you open the mail app. no push, no scheduled fetching. nothing.

Installing iOS 5 on my iPod has basically made 80% of my music unavailable. I think something went wrong during the restore from backup. Now most of the songs I try playing are stuck at 0:00. I've tried resyncing and tweaking some stuff in iTunes 5-6 times already. No dice.

I have WiFi Sync setup on my iPad but it loses with connection with iTunes pretty regularly, forcing me to physically connect it again. Anyone else having this problem?

They're not actually on your device, but your device thinks they are on it. This happened to my girlfriend's phone when I tried to desync her music. Settings -> General -> Usage -> Music -> Delete all, resync the music.

I think it's easier to use then the calender app but I would say overall there is little reason for it to exist.

Thanks, I'll try that. I searched around on Google but it was hard finding any solid advice on what to do in this instance.

When it happened to her phone I kept trying to sync and desync it and it wasn't working at all until I tried the thing I just suggested to you. Hope it works for you.

I think with Siri, it would be useful but otherwise I don't find it much use. (Besides grocery lists)
