I will have to, but it's like....Apple really missed the point here. They fixed the AWFULNESS of modal notifications, but didn't address the practical functionality gap of not knowing what's going on immediately without having to pull down the drawer. Anyway, mostly fixed.

iMessage is fucked up for me right now.

Well, I for one really hope the next iPhone has a simple external LED that lights up when you have messages. It's probably the only thing I'd truly change on the phone if I could right now.

I’d like a little dot in the menu bar or whatever. But I think Apple’s thought process was that the app icon badge acts as that reminder. For me, it works as all my important tasks that would need a reminder are in apps on my main page and I have badges turned on for them.

But, of course, for people who want to know the notification state of apps spread over multiple pages, hunting for icon badges doesn’t work.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a menu bar icon shows up eventually.

Finally got my iPad2 to update! Geez, I miss the days when every one hated Apple and us smart people were able up upgrade our Apple products with no hassle.

Got my phone to finally update, but after it was finished 'restoring' all my apps were missing - and presumably all my app-data as well.

Any idea how to fix this?

I can't wait till iTunes is dead dead dead dead. It is the biggest piece of crap Apple has ever written - and I had a MobileMe account.

This is like an Easter egg hunt. I didn't read up on the changes before I updated. There are lots of little changes that are quite surprising on the iPad.

Sorry to be dense but will i lose all the music i have on my iPod Touch if i do this? As i don't have them on my Macbook at the moment.

Is it just me or is there no way in Reminders to set a location-based alert by inputting an address or making a selection on the map? I get an option for my current location, my home and work, but beyond that I can only select an address from contacts. It would be great if I were leaving for, say, the mall and would like to set a reminder for when I get there to go to a certain store for something.

Am I missing an obvious setting to allow this or is the app really limited only to current location or an address from my contacts?

You'll likely lose your apps as well, that's the same dialog I got before getting screwed by iTunes. I don't understand the message though, I have never, not once synced my phone with any other computer, and I backed up like 5 times prior.

Fucking bullshit.

I agree. It's hard to know what was in there before for ios4. Little touches like "Reader" in Safari is nice when browsing the web.. I especially like the mark as read option for mail. I think that's new.

People losing your shit after you update to 5.0: Just do a restore once you are done.

5.0 resets EVERYTHING on your iPhone. It starts it out completely blank as if you had just opened it. In iTunes, do a "Restore From Backup" and select whatever the latest backup you have is and tell it to go. This will restore all of your apps, text messages, videos, songs, contacts, settings, etc.

will the ios device show up during a wifi sync?

i cant seem to get my computer "available" for syncing lol

edit: derp, got it

I'll give it a try, but my computer told me that it was restoring after the initial install - and all my accounts, settings, background, and app layout were preserved, but all my music and 3rd party apps were missing.

iOS 5 update was smooth here but I'm getting a "The iPhone [my phone's name] could not be synced because the sync session failed to start" error message whenever I try to do a backup to iCloud through iTunes with the phone connected by usb.

I tried to do it directly through the "back up now" button in the iCloud section of the phone's settings too but the bar gets stuck for a while near the start saying it will take 5 or 4h and then gives me an error too.

Yep I was right, I had to do a factory reset before I could get IOS 5 on my iPad but it looks to be working... already went through the iCloud setup on it.

The new gestures and split keyboard rock so much. I think I'm going to be using my iPad 2 a lot more now.

I ended up wiping out my iPad 2 before updating, with the cloud backup I can get everything back onto the thing pretty easily. Also, it gives me a chance to only download the apps I want/need, had too many shit apps cluttering up my pages before.

Just updated my iPad 2. Aside from one -5000 error which I fixed by changing USB ports, the update went incredibly smoothly. I was a little scared by some of the posts I'd read.

My phone just freezes on the Apple logo after trying to install BiteSMS - if I hold power and home to reboot it, it does it again. There's no way at all to restore it, turn it off, or do anything in redsn0w... bricked? :/

I used to be able to stream the iTunes library on my computer to my iPad via the iPod application. I dont seem to be able to do this with the new Music app.

Am I missing something?

Thank god, i thought I lost everything. For some reason, i thought doing a restore will bring me back to iOS 4.

Just updated my 3GS with Win7 64bit. The update downloaded in 20 mins, the phone took forever to backup/restore, but very smooth.

Does iMessage work with a Google Voice number (and other similar services) or does it only work with the number on the sim card?
Your real cell number or the email address associated with the Apple ID.

Goin' from 4.1 to 5.0. Man I hope there's a jailbreak, soon.

Getting the error "The iPhone could not be synced because the sync session failed to finish."

Any ideas, or just an authenticating error on Apple's side?

So I downloaded the iTunes beta last week, as well as the iOS 5. Updated my phone and iPad and everything was all good.

Well, now I'm trying to update my wife's phone, and it's telling me that iTunes needs to be updated in order to install iOS 5 on her phone. But when I check for a new version of iTunes it tells me I have the newest version. :/

What gives?

Anyone know, please? Really worried that I've bricked it.

I hope you have better luck than I did - just did a restore from backup, all it did was delete my iCloud account settings and restore my MobileMe account settings.

I went ahead and purchased the $20/10GB iCloud upgrade for a total of 15GB. Now I can let my iPad and iPhone back up without worrying about micro-managing individual apps.

How do I update if I'm on the developer beta though? My iTunes says that the firmware I have now is the newest one, so I can't get the file to download. I never got the GM, is that the problem?

Now that I've got my iCloud set up properly it's working like a dream, so much more elegant and fast than MobileMe ever was. LOVE IT.

iCloud is making me wish I didn't give up my iPhone. Fuck you Canadian telecoms for assraping pricings :(

I'm hoping that Apple will eventually make an AWS phone so I can get one on Mobilicity.

i dont know what my itunes is doing now i hate this damn update. took 4+ hours and now its just nothing.

part of me wants to close itunes and restart it but then i will have to download the update again.

See my post a few above yours. I've got the same problem.

To be honest, it may go faster. Same thing happened to me.

Sigh, I hate the fact they still don't allow you to delete the numerous useless apps (Stocks and Weather). No one who actually cares about their money would follow their stocks via a non-real time ticker.. it's insane and that hasn't been a relavent way to do it for at least 15 years now! Also, why do you need both Notes AND Reminders? Ughhhh, don't get me started on Newstand or Videos both of which I have no need for.

If I set my Photos to backup to the Cloud (the only thing that's useful about it basically), it will then automatically download them to all your devices? So should I just not connect my iPad to my Cloud? I have no interest in using space on MULTIPLE devices. What's the point of offering Cloud Storage if I can't pick and choose what I download from it? I feel like they didn't think that out very well.
