iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

Ugh, I'm an idiot. After updating, wondered why my apps weren't all on my itouch. Didn't know IOS5 lets me use it while syncing so I closed out itunes thinking it was a bugging out and went through a couple of restores. Then absent-mindedly deleted my most recent backup. The only backup left is from Feb of this year :(

Damn, missed the message on iTunes Match not being ready for launch. Went ahead and purchased it and it doesn't work properly. Oh well, rest of iOS 5 is bliss.

I've been noticing this all day. Users are so accustomed to the "syncing" screen on iOS that they've been thinking they lost all their apps after the restore when they see that they can use the device while it's syncing.

Is it downloading the update, or the update process that takes so long. I already downloaded the file this morning, and have about 40 min before I have to leave. Debating on starting the update or not

Just in case it helps anyone out that's having problems, this is the process I used for updating my iphone 4. The download took 15-20 minutes, the install a little longer though that was mostly the restoring from backup stuff. I used a Mac.

* Made sure iTunes was updated before ever plugging in the phone, then restarted the computer, restarted iTunes.
* Cleared out any notification badges on any apps on my phone, cleared the apps that were suspended, rebooted phone with homebutton+powerbutton.
* Plugged in phone, Checked for Update
* Did Download Only for update (not download and install). Update download took about 20 minutes.
* Decided to do a regular standard sync before anything else. Clicked on Sync. iTunes told me there were some things purchased on the phone that I needed to sync over first, so I went ahead and did that. So a full regular sync, created backup. Then I did it again. :)
* After it was done, went ahead and clicked on 'Update Phone'. It was already downloaded and ready, so it went fairly quickly.
* After the phone did it's install and automatic reboot, once it got back into iTunes iTunes informed me it was going to restore from my backup. This by far took the longest. In fact, the phone actually went to the normal homescreen while it was 'restoring apps' in iTunes.

Some things to consider:

As mentioned earlier, if you've actually been backing up the phone regularly, including the data tab (ie transferring contacts to Outlook or Windows Contacts or the Address Book, etc.) and have your non iTunes music backed up somewhere, don't be afraid to just do a clean restore and just sync later on to get your data back. Especially since redownloading apps and music that you bought in the past is fairly straightforward now.

Probably most of this everyone already knows, but hey if it helps anyone out that's cool too.

Urrgh even my backup won't get my music and apps back

Only when I select sync to icloud does it show my music in the "capacity bar", when I switch to "this computer" it goes back to showing empty

Also why would it say all my music is on the phone, but it isn't really?

Jesus... I think I'll wait a week or two. I've got 5 devices to upgrade to iOS5 - my iPad, my wife's iPad 2, my iPhone 4, her iPhone 4, and our daughter's iPod touch. I updated iTunes, but I'll wait on everything else.

Are you supposed to be able to sync while your device ISN'T plugged in? The way I understood it you could not, but I just did. 0_o

Also, I can't get my device to sync automatically when I plug in...what is this, opposite day? LOL

So I've been riding the beta wave, but once checking with the new itunes, it says my phone is up to date. That can't be right...

What do?

So how do I merge my MobileMe account which has my email and contacts with my iTunes account that has all my purchases? Is this doable?

I fucking HATE having two separate accounts for this.

Download the update for your device manually and force it to restore (or update, but YMMV on that) to that version you downloaded by holding Option on a Mac (Shift key for Windows). It will ask you to locate the update you downloaded and will restore/update your device to that version. Then restore the device's settings and content from a backup if you did a full restore. Done.

Now can someone answer my question from the last page?

Can someone confirm for me what format is required to add text/notification tones to iOS 5? I have mine in .caf format for when you added them manually via jailbreak, so just need to confirm what I'm re-formatting them to.

Mac updated with no problems
iPad 2 updated with no problems
iPhone 3gs restoring as I type
AppleTV still working itself out

Only hiccup so far: calendar duplication. 2 local calendars turned into 2 local and around 8 iCloud duplicates. Deleted all but 2 on the iCloud. Hopefully I didn't delete the wrong ones.

How long should it take for my 500MB camera roll to backup to iCloud? It's been an hour or so and still says incomplete.

And when its done will my 400 pics from my iPhone be in my photo stream and show up on the iCloud website?

So far the is no photo option on the site for me and the only pics in my photo stream are the 2 I took after activating it.

71mb away and the fucking dl dies....again. and the mirrors are still incredibly slow. screw it, see ya in a few days ios when the other millions of people aren't trying to dl.

Thanks, this is a great help for me!

Will it come synced with all my shit? :)

Actually...If I understand the icloud stuff correctly, at least you won't need to plug anything in if it's the same stuff that's on your 3GS.

HOW CAN IT BE THAT WE'RE IN 2011 AND ITUNES STILL CANNOT CACHE DOWNLOADS INCASE THERE'S AN ERROR.
LLShC.gif
it's because itunes is kind of a piece of shit. i want tabbed itunes store browsing too!

This is fucked. I am stuck in an error/restore loop. Tryed using DFU. I am trying to download on another pc now. :(

It all started because the backup errored out orginally. My shit is bricked.

I had no problems with the update, and I'm loving the split keyboard!

I was looking for a way to enable the new gestures, and Google tells me they've been disabled on iPad 1. Anyone know why this is? Thankfully I wasn't using the beta so I'm not missing them, but I was looking forward to giving the old Home button a break.

Downloading now. I had no idea it was coming out so soon! I use an iPod Touch, not an iPhone, so I wasn't as fervently excited as some folks, heh.

Edit: Oh, looks like it isn't working. Guess I'll wait a while.

5.1 features please:

dont clear notifications off lock screen when I unlock

show notifications that are in pull down menu on lock screen

let me enter any address into the reminders app not just select contacts

Is anyone else's download continuously dying around halfway through with the error message saying 'The network timed out'?

FUUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKKK.

Before it bricked my work phone yes. :( I trusted Apple but I guess these things are always untrustworthy events.

Here's what I'm not sure how to fix.

I have

A gmail-linked Apple ID
A Me.com address/MobileMe

And now I want iCloud? How should I take advantage of this? Should I find a way to merge accounts?

Is the .me address just for the iCloud email? I too use a Gmail-linked Apple ID and that's what's registered for iCloud/iMessage.

When i try to update or even restore the ipad. I do not know what is wrong.

anyone know a good Registry Cleaner?

I went to this website

http://www.fixerrorcodesnow.com/error-3194

If that hosts thing is legit, you shouldn't need a registry cleaner unless you plan to jailbreak. even then maybe not, that seems to be trying to sell you something.

I found this on the Apple forums, a guy having the same problem says he never jailbroke:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/16066462#16066462

It leads to a discussion on the hosts file. You only need notepad to do editing to the hosts file. Here's the Microsoft link for a fixit, along with manual instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#FixItForMeAlways

That way you can feel a little better about it with a legit link. :) What version of Windows are you using?

Already tried that. When I try and install the file and it's finished extracting, I get 'This iPhone could not be updated, unknown error. Error code: 3002).

(Thanks though mate)
Are you opt-clicking the update or restore button? Try opt-clicking restore after making sure you have a backup to restore from later on.
