iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

Why aren't my contacts or calendars showing up on the iCloud site? It should push the contacts from my iPad up to the cloud, correct? Must be missing something, but I have contacts/calendars/bookmarks all on in Settings under iCloud.

Make sure you have iPhoto 9.2. You may need to run Software Update... from the Apple menu. I did. Just choosing "Check for update" in iPhoto wasn't enough.
 
For some reason the iPod Touch 4g had no problems updating the firmware, just my iPad... I know I saw other people with similar issues.
 
All this bullshit illustrates why delta updates, over air updating, and wireless app syncing should have been there in the first place. Too bad I'll never live to see my update finish.

It leads to a discussion on the hosts file. You only need notepad to do editing to the hosts file. Here's the Microsoft link for a fixit, along with manual instructions:

That way you can feel a little better about it with a legit link. :) What version of Windows are you using?

Windows Vista. And i don't jailbreak which is why i dont understand why i am having this error.

Do you need to be running lion for this? I did the software and check for update and it tells me my 8.1.2 is "up to date"

The only thing I got from a software update was a safari update.
 
BTW the notification tray on the ipad is just plain ugly

Man recently I have been getting so many Game Center friend requests. It seems now that iOS 5 is out for the public, people are using the friend recommendations and friending random people who are recommended to them. It's cool I guess, I accept everyone. No discrimination here.
 
Wow, you can sync both an iPhone and iPad at the same time?!

My iPad is plugged into my MacBook, and my iPhone is plugged into the wall -- both are syncing.

No problem, also found this:

Error 3000-3999: (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3164, 3194, and so on) Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com, or due to your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again.


Possible causes: Firwall/Antivirus (Kaspersky particularly), router blocking the port or address, or, if you have ever used a program to hack your phone such as tinyumbrella it corrupted your hosts file. You will need to edit this file and remove all lines containing gs.apple.com.

Opening apps and folders is noticeably faster. And holding onto icons to rearrange them is much more responsive now. I haven't really noticed any of the reported improvements in browsing speed, however, and the camera is still slow as balls.
 
What is everyone's suggestion on family style accounts.

My wife and I share an iTunes account so we don't have to re-buy apps etc.

I see you can have different apple IDs for icloud, itunes etc.

Should I and my wife both just make a new separate .me address for icloud or should one of us use the existing itunes apple ID?

bluh sort of annoying. They need master accounts that can authorize sub-accounts

Yeah. iOS 5 basically made 3GS as responsive as iPhone 4 was on iOS 4.

No. You can use whatever you want for your personal iCloud and just share the iTunes for just iTunes stuff.
 
Still updating my apps, but so far the whole install's been quite smooth.

Noticed the new notifications while texting a friend as the phone continued to sync - it's a godsend for sure.

Can't wait to play around with the new features.
 
what the? i have a completely clean ipad1 that i installed ios5 into.
but, it takes up over 6,4GB of the availble space.
is this serious?
 
Not sure where to post this, but Edge magazine is offering subscriptions on Newsstand. Individual issues are $4.99.

But where it gets interesting is the subscription options: 90 days for $12.99, 180 days for $21.99, and $39.99 for a year. I think these are the same at their website (not sure, uses Zinio I think) but surprised me that it wasn't a straight year or more subscription. Options, gotta love 'em.

So I'm toying with Photo Syncing. I took a picture and it did in fact show up on my HD in about 30-40 seconds. I deleted the image from my HD and it still stayed in my Photo Stream and Camera Roll so there isn't a 1 to 1 connection.. it's just a backup (good).

Reading the site and it looks like the Photo Stream just stores your last 1,000 photos.. okay, forgot about that. That's both good and bad.
 
So my iTunes/iOS update all went through within about 20 minutes pretty painlessly. Setting up iOS 5 via these new prompts on the phone now.

Dumb question: So...iCloud is completely inaccessible to me on Snow Leopard on my Mac, right? All these wonderful features of synching to the cloud across my Mac/phone (Calendars, Contacts, Music, Photo Stream), it's all unusable unless I upgrade to Lion?

Keep in mind that all HD's lose about 10% of their actual listed capacity.. the OS is probably 1-2 gigs?

it didn't work :( i dont get it. why is this happening to me. i know nothing of a proxy or anything like that

Oh crap! I turned off my firewall and it worked finally!!! Thanks sooo much.

Yup. But Lion is cheap and wonderful, so I would upgrade unless you plan on buying a new mac very soon.
 
Reading list is a god send for my Gaf reading on the go on my iPhone notificans tab is pretty cool too.
 
After several hours and numerous 3700 errors, I have iOS 5 and have redownloaded all of my apps. This new software is phenomenal. The subtle fixes of everything I ever got annoyed by is truly something to marvel at. The fact that I'm writing this while syncing my iTunes is mind-blowing.

What's odd though is that I deleted it from my Camera Roll and it stayed in my Photo Stream (kind of annoying but can be helpful) but the Photo Stream files don't allow for deletions. You can "Add to Camera Roll" along with a plethora of other options but you can't delete. What's up with that?

Yeah, someone pointed out a few pages ago that you have to delete the photo stream backup to get rid of them. Or, take 1000 new photos.

When I popped my head into the Lion thread just last week, all I saw were complaints about bugs, errors, incompatibility problems and many newcomers declaring they'd wait till the first major update corrected everything....

just installed avplayerhd and guess what, the movies installed were still there =) thats why it took so much space. now its 1GB

Lion has been awesome for me. I wouldn't go back to SL.

Yeah, I'd bet dollars to donuts that they fucked with the system prior to updating and expected everything to be flawless.

Unless you use email with ancient POP servers, you should be fine. That's the only major buzzkill with Lion right now.

And as for iOS5, I am only having one weird thing which is when I am plugged into iTunes syncing. It shows I am WAAAAY over capacity on the devices, but syncs anyways. When the sync is done, it shoots back down to normal. Weird.
 
In terms of documents in the cloud, what are your thoughts regarding documents with private, or healthcare information in terms of privacy?

Also, it seems if you start a Pages document on the iPad, you can edit the document on the iPhone 4/4S. Can you edit documents you start on say your Mac in Pages on the iPad (in Pages)?

Haha, yeah when I found that last thing that said the 3000 error numbers were related to a networking issue I thought it might be something like that. Especially since you hadn't jailbroken yet. Good luck!

custom .M4R ringtones appear to show up for the custom text sounds if you scroll down to the regular ringtones.

I'm not sure if there is some other extension that will end up in the text section.. Should all work the same though.
