Will iOS 5 ever be mandatory or automatically pushed to the iPhone 4?

Right now it looks like users have to manually update through iTunes. I'm just wondering if that will ever change.

It's not mandatory in the sense that the device will never pop up and refuse to work until you upgrade to iOS 5. But, if you ever have to restore the device, it will always use the most recent version of iOS.

So using location based Reminders is pretty damn useless and unreliable. There's just no point to it if it doesn't work well. I set a location based reminder for my wife to pick up some baby vitamins since we are out when she arrived at the hospital today. The reminder never went off. Completely useless.

Odd, it's worked flawlessly for me for the following things:

"Remind me to xxxxxxxxx when I get home/to work."

"Remind me to xxxxxxxxx when I leave home/work."

Really haven't tried it for anything else yet.

But you can still manually restore. So yeah you won't be forced into iOS 5.

When Apple stops signing older versions of iOS, not even a manual restore will do it.

Unless you were jailbroken and somehow saved your SHSH blobs etc.

Ever since I upgraded, the "click" noise is delayed every time I hit the lock button. Makes me rage.

I noticed that it is greatly delayed on my iPhone 4S compared to my old 2nd generation iPod Touch! Doesn't particularly annoy me, but definitely strange...

It's really been like that for a while (iPhone 4). I'm pretty sure the click isn't for when the screen goes dark, but as a audio notification that your device has entered the low-power/sleep/lock mode. Kind of wish the my macbook made that sound. I know it has one of those sensors to stop the hard disk during sudden movement, but I like to be safe and it is obnoxious waiting 10 seconds to see if the glowing white light has come on.

I've known iDevices to behave like that since forever. I always thought that it was a matter of loading the sound.

If you unlock it and then lock it again, the locking sound will be instantaneous. Because it's still in cache or RAM or whatevs.

The light that slides across "slide to unlock" is jerky now since I upgraded. Very annoying.

Is there a place where we can list these glitches for Apple to fix?

Another annoyance is that Apple still hasn't made there website iPhone/mobile friendly.

So anyone has any idea for the best way to sync info with a device that doesn't have iCloud, when it's activated on my Mac for other devices that do?

In short, I have a Mac and an iPad. My old iPhone doesn't get iOS5. iCloud is fantastic, but obviously won't work for my iPhone.

When I plug it in, all the sync services are off - syncing calendars becomes a bit of a nightmare, as it tries to do a bunch of weird merges. In addition, the contacts are now gone from my computer, since they 'reside' in the cloud - that is, if I try a sync, it will delete all contacts from the phone (the list of contacts doesn't show up in iTunes.).

I basically want to keep contacts synced so I don't have to keep updating multiple sources.

Is there some switch on my Mac to get it to sync to a non iCloud device?

That still shocks me. They just think you are going to just load the Apple Store app.

Are you eligible for a carrier upgrade? You can get a 3gs for free with 2year contract, which works with ios5 and gives you iCloud.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get rid of the Newsstand? It's ugly and I don't want it and I can't even hide it in a folder :(

I'm not a big fan of hard coded apps either. There's actually a glitch trick you can do when creating a folder. Google "getting rid of Newsstand".

Let' just say no.

I sorted out a way to deal with my calendars. I barely use my iPhone calendar, so it'll be ok to not mess with those - I created a separate calendar that exists only on my iPhone and got it to sync back to my Mac.

I'm not convinced that syncing stuff to my iCloud related accounts won't mess up stuff, so I'm breaking the sync between my iPhone and Mac.

Well that and the apple website is a testament to safari in ios's ability to render real webpages. I don't think they will ever make a mobile version. It would be nice though if they were to make a mobile version of their support threads though.

Is anyone else having the songs they play on their iPhone not reflect in their iTunes library in terms of updated play count?

Sigh, iTunes has now crashed twice in the past few minutes. I am not sure if it's 10.5 just sucking with Windows 7 or related to iOS5 what but it's been a nightmare since the update.

They made website versions of their iPad and iPhone help pages though.

It''d be nice to have an iPad version of the Store app.

Getting the lovely iPhone could not be synced due to sync session failed to start. This thing has been a bit of a clusterfuck.

This thread is more active than the iPad 2 thread, so I figure I'll ask here, even though it's not completely on topic.

I'm attempting to rip a DVD to my computer and place it on my iPad (specifically, a season of It's Always Sunny). The software I'm using is Handbrake. The thing is, it's taking FOREVER to even process the disc, much less rip it. It's been processing for an hour now (and most of that hour it's been hung up on 4 of 16).

I've never used Handbrake before, but surely this isn't normal? I have no idea why it's taking so long.

EDIT: Just as I was typing this post, it began processing 5 of 16. Still, at this rate it'll take all night before I can even begin ripping the DVD. Is there any way to speed this up? All the tutorials I can find mention how this process only takes a few minutes, but I've been sitting here for over an hour.

I'm so glad that future updates will be able to be done directly on my phone, because I am never fucking updating iTunes again — at least not on this computer. The only reason I ever do is when it's required for an iOS update, and something ALWAYS gets fucked up. This time I lost about 80 album cover images, and of course, most of them were rare and not recognized by iTunes. Fixing that sure was fun.

Same thing happened to me as well.

Frustrating for sure.

Haha I tried that glitch and I'm either not doing it right or my fingers are too slow cause I can't get it haha. Oh well. Thanks anyway. :)

Not quoting your tag is excruciatingly difficult to resist.

Regardless, are you using iCloud and have you asked it to only sync very specific data services? I had a similar error that I resolved by enabling ALL content to sync to iCloud once, then disabling the content I don't want to sync to iCloud again and doing a computer-to-iPhone sync as normal. Seems iCloud gets persnicketty when you try to be particular about what you want to sync with it if you haven't done the whole shebang at least once and buggers your phone's regular sync function until you do.

I've had this happen before, it often happens on DVDs with an enormous title count (I was ripping Workaholics S1 last night and this occurring with a 99 title count). You might be better off ripping the episodes to VOBs and simply using Handbrake to encode.

I don't have any software recommendations for you. I used MacTheRipper in the past but apparently distribution on it is fucked up now so I can't necessarily vouch for the latest version (there appears to be a public version and a private version, and the private version is newer but non-free). On Windows, I use DVD Decrypter to rip and Handbrake to encode.

Yeah, i'm wondering what effect the 'priority' has on anything, I never use it tbh. Don't really care about ordering my reminders tbh, that's what different lists are for.
Huh? Thanks for the reply and it's a shame priorities have no effect, but it's a bit confusing as to why you can't re-order the lists, and unfortunately different lists isn't really going to help in this case.

If I have say, 20 items very specific to one list, it's a real shame I can't star one of them, or push it to the top somehow. It's very basic (and IMO essential) functionality for a lists/reminders app

I can apparently log in with my new @me adress on iTunes aswell as my old e-mail. Does this mean I will get iTunes reciepts there from now on?

Just learned a pro-tip: When an iMessage isn't sent immediately, you can speed up the process by holding the blue bubble.

EDIT: I meant that it doesn't last 5 minutes to transform the iMessage into a text message. You can choose to send it as a text nessage right away.

To send voice/audio memos on iMessage, you must first record it on the default Voice Memo app, then hit Share > Message. Took me a bit to realize but it's better than whatsapp, in the sense that doesn't limit your seconds/minutes.

Is that thing of the bubble true?

My posting? Yes, I just tested it. ;-)

Via the Voice Memos app email sharing is limited to 8 minutes and message sharing is limited to 2 minutes. Or am I missing something?

yeah the play count is broken. sucks because i use it to remind myself which podcasts i've listened to. i alos find the music app is a lot slower and buggy especially when unlocking in iOS5. apple needs to update with bug fixes and the option to move crap like newsstand into a folder.

Anyone encountered this bug where the camera controls along the bottom of the screen would move itself to a landscape layout? Once it happens, it doesn't reorientate back to normal. I thought it was just a very rare glitch, but then it also happened to a 4S that I had just taken out of the box today.

Yeah that happened to me before with the camera.

Also, one thing I HATE about the new camera is if you take a picture, it flies to the thumbnail in the bottom left corner, then delete that picture and the thumb STAYS there until you take another photo!

So be weary people. :lol

Yeah, in fact, the thumbnail in the pic I posted had been deleted when I took that screenshot.

Speaking of e-mail, everything I open iTunes or App Store, it checks my Hotmail account for new mail. What's up with that? My Hotmail account is the only one set to Manual, all the others are either Push or Fetch.

Guys how do I sign up to a @me.com email account please? :/
Either sign up for a new Apple ID/iCloud account and choosing to use a new me.com email address, or using an existing one, enable iCloud Mail and/Notes syncing and it will ask you to create one.

Sorted! Thank you. Damn am I ever happy to have ditched my old Gmail address, and even happier that I don't have to register (my third choice) domain name now too.

Quick question, my girlfriend has a Macbook (without Lion) - is there anyway she can get an @me.com account too?

Thanks again!

I was complaining about battery life on my iPhone4 after updating to iOS5 earlier, but after a total drain and recharge the battery seems to be back to normal.
