Do you guys use Auto-Brightness on or off? And also do you use fetch or push for your mails?
I just want to know how much do these options affect battery life

Autobrightness seems to add hours to my phone. I really feel like it makes a world of a difference but the screen doesn't look as nice. When I take it off and put the brightness to 50-75% I'm all "holy FUCK, it's not worth it, this is so much nicer"

I just did a little experiment and I just found another reason to be impressed with iOS: multitasking works properly! I realised I hadn't closed down any apps for a couple of days so I wondered how many were open. I had 16 open (mainly games) and the phone was still working fine. So I opened some more...and more...and more...I got to 45 open apps and then played Street Fighter 4. It played perfectly. Do that on an Android phone :p

I have no idea where to post this, so I'll stick it here.

In the Facebook app, how do you disable notifications after someone posts to the same wall posts that you posted on before them? That's the only thing I want to get rid of, but I just can't figure out which one it is.

I think you can do this only from the webapp. It's "unfollow this post"

Sorry not webapp, but website on a proper browser

Wow, what a pain in the ass. I intentionally rarely even comment on wall posts because I hate getting notifications for that sort of thing.

Thanks for that tip though, I didn't know that would affect the app like this.

You can change which notifications you get in settings->Facebook->push notifications. I think turning off comments will take care of it.

Hmmm, I am gmail as well. Maybe try turning on your icloud email and see if it has the same issue.
iCloud hasn't pushed me emails since day 3 of 4S release so there are deffinitely issues for some people with push using gmail or @me email. Must be a firmware bug.

Except you don't actually have 45 apps open, you only have one open.

It's been back to its former self for me today, getting push notifications before I see it in the web interface.

But the point is all of those apps were ready and open to be used immediately, with no impact on a highly demanding game like SF4. I've never seen it work this well on an Android phone even with just a handful of apps in use

So how does iMessage work?

My dad has an iPhone 4 with iOS5. I sent him an iMessage from my iPad but he didn't get it until he connected to WiFi at his hotel. I sent him a text message in the interim via my Android through normal means and he got that fine over 3G.

How does it work? On his end, does a text message show up different from an iMessage? Maybe he didn't set me up right in his address book and has two entries for me? If he put my phone number and my email (My Apple account) in the same address book entry, would he get the message right?

first things first, make sure he has iMessage turned on in settings. it’s under the messages section in there.

then you can also check the phone number and email addresses associated with iMessage to make sure he gets them sent to whichever address he wants. note that on an iPhone, the phone number is default and can’t be removed or modified. but you can add email addresses like on iPads

Does he have data turned off or something?

I believe the delay may be a bug/issue related to sending an iMessage to an email address where the server isn't aware that the receiving device is available. Maybe because of poor cell signal, I don't know.

I had a similar thing happen where I sent messages to my friend and he got them instantly on his iPad on Wi-Fi and replied, but he didn't receive them on his iPhone until he got home and his phone connected to his home Wi-Fi.

Maybe sending messages from iPhone to iPhone using phone numbers is better, I don't know.

Well he is commenting on the implementation, which is perfectly valid, even if it's not technically accurate. And for the most part, the user doesn't see that the background apps are halted unless the device is out of memory and starts terminating the oldest apps.

Anyone else's iPhone randomly vibrate three times when receiving text messages? Ever since the iOS5 update, my iPhone 4 has been vibrating and ringing (when not set to Slient mode) up to three times when I receive a single text message. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. It's driving me nuts.

I think it's set to vibrate once for mail, twice for texts by default in iOS.

Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Repeat Alerts, is this what it's doing?

Actually, no. It's vibrating/playing the ringtone several times in one instant.

This is going to sound stupid but the best way to describe is that it does it several times in one instant like "ri-ri-ri-ring-ring". The same thing with the vibration; something along the lines of "vrm-vrm-vrrm-vrrrmmmm". It only happens when I get a text message since none of the other badges vibrate or play sound (since I turned 'Sound' off for those). And I can't always replicate it.

i have seemingly lost the ability to wi-fi sync at my campus. both my laptop and iphone are on the same network, any ideas?

Did 5 let apps all download simultaneously? Because I remember that happening at first, and now every app has to wait in line again.

Do you have custom vibrations set up? That's the only other thing I can think of. I'd restore it. Failing that, Genius Bar it.

Is it worth bothering to Update right now or should I give it a few weeks? None of it seems that amazing compared with the trade off of it all going to hell!

Sorry for bumping the topic, but I need some help :(

After accidentally unplugging my iPhone earlier today while it was updating some large-ass app (I think it was Real Racing), I reconnected the phone but now it always gets stuck on step 5 in the syncing process in iTunes (roughly translated, the "waiting for changes to occur" step). How do I fix this? Very annoying issue.

If you're happy as of right now then there's no need to update. For my part I haven't had any issues at all (either on 3GS or 4S), but it's never a bad thing to wait for .1 of a new software release. :)

It'll backup by default before it does this right? Just restore that backup I would think.

Mine's been doing that since I upgraded to iOS 5. I just manually end the sync from my phone. Doing it from iTunes doesn't work though; I have to do it from the phone. I tried restoring but the problem stayed. Weirdly, it doesn't happen with my wife's phone even though she is synced to the same computer and library.

I agree it's a little annoying, but I love the wireless sync so much that I don't really mind. I do hope it's fixed in 5.01 though.

Lets see if someone can help me on this one...

Ever since updating, when I receive a text it plays both the incoming and outgoing text alert sound. How do I fix this?

It downloads two at a time.
Up to three actually, but it can go down to just one at a time as well. It all depends on the sizes of the apps it's downloading as there's a cap.

mine does this too - i can't figure out why. it seems like maybe it is trying to play the sound from the notifications panel and also from the system level...

also, any idea why my iphone has stopped being able to wifi sync? i'm on windows 7, and it syncs fine wired - but wifi is always greyed out.

Try doing a hard reset. Hold power and home button. That helped fix my wifi sync.

So I saw an iPhone 4S commercial and it showed someone taking a picture with the volume buttons.

Tried the same and it works.

Fuck yeah iOS5.

I think I'm done with Reminders. It's completely unreliable and has failed more than it has succeeded when using location based reminders. Apple really needs to lower the precision on the the radius of the alert or make it customizable because right now unless you are at the exact spot it thinks the location is, it will not go off.

Did Apple enable one finger scrolling for certain web views that used to require two finger scrolling? Previously I needed two fingers for Google Reader but now it scrolls with just one finger 0_0

Yes they did. It also works with text entry boxes.
