iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

Ok guys I'm about to embark on a journey that I need help with.

I have a iPhone 4 and iPad.

My Mrs has a iPhone 4.

We all share the same (mine) itunes account for apps etc.

My iPhone and the iPad is updated.

I'm about to update her iPhone with iOS 5 (on 4 now) then transfer her onto her branch new 4S so her contacts, pics etc all transfer over. But with iOS5 I believe I need to set her up on her own apple ID before I do all this and use something called HomeShare?


Can you guys help me out with some instructions on how to do this the best way possible?

Not quite sure what you're asking but, but I'll take a stab:

Her iCloud ID will affect only her mail, personal contacts, notes, bookmarks, etc. She can still use your iTunes ID for apps and music. If you share a single name for contacts, she can put that on her phone and get only the contacts from that name.

Right so all I need to do is upgrade, apply her apple ID and it's all fine? it will recognise its her phone and could sync her info. Then she can still pull over my apps?

Yeah, my wife and I share an Apple ID for iTunes. You can put a different IDs for different things. She should use her own ID for iCloud and the shared account for iTunes.
 
Can someone here give me some reliable reports about how iOS 5 runs on the 3GS phones?

Is it a nightmare like trying to run iOS 4 on a 3G, or does the hardware handle it okay?
 
iOS 5 runs reasonably well on my 3GS, but I am definitely seeing some slowdown. Some apps take a bit longer to load, and sometimes I'll run into some slowdown in skipping songs, but the caveat here is that my phone gives me numerous other problems unrelated to the iOS, so it could just be me.


New question: I sprung for iTunes Match, under the impression that it would replace my songs and update them with higher quality tracks and proper album artwork and all. This has not happened. What am I doing wrong? I looked through the thread, as I'm sure it's been addressed already, but I didn't see anything.

Any guidance?
 
Wow, my phone completely drained last night as I slept. I have a iPhone4 running 5.0.1. Is there some other homemade fix to stop this crazy battery drain bullshit?

I've got it on my 3GS, and it runs fine apart from the occasional screen freeze when I go to unlock (doesn't last very long). I lost about half of my album art with the update, and the only way I can get it back is to remove it from the phone and re-import it. Other than that I've had no problems

Mine's been better after wiping the phone and not restoring from the backup (Apple Store recommended that).
 
Quick question, and a complete longshot:

Is there anyway I can easily sync all of my photos (including ones I've already taken) between my iPhone and iPad.

And also any app I buy on my iTunes account, will be useable on both the iPad and iPhone.

Yet, the data on each of them, is completely different? ie I don't want my contacts, browser data, calendar etc passed between the devices. One is going to be for out and about, and the other is going to stay at home. Thanks!

PhotoStream doesn't sync as such, but you should be able to use DropBox to do this I would think. There will be some limitations in terms of storage I would think on a free account though, so perhaps someone else can offer some alternative options.

Not all apps are universal unfortunately, but they're clearly marked in the iTunes store page what devices they're compatible with.

With iCould you can decide which elements you want to sync on each device, although you might benefit from having two different iCloud accounts if you still want to backup to the cloud from each device.
 
Ah I see, many thanks - so using two different iTunes accounts, I could have separate data, but still sync photos using dropbox, and also share the universal apps between the two that are stored on my PC?
 
These apps look quite handy for it: CameraSync & PicBox

Neat! (would anyone like to refer me to dropbox? I believe we'd both get extra storage that way, 2GB isn't nearly enough for me unfortunately, thanks!)

Kind of. You'd need to use two separate iCloud accounts (to allow for backups to the cloud, but without synchronising between devices) but you'd need to stick to a single iTunes account to share purchases (as these are tied to the account). I'm pretty sure that's the way you would need to do that.

To be honest I'm starting to wonder if actually, I could/should use the same iCloud account anyway, could be easier that way, and can't really see too many negatives.

You should. There's no reason not to. Your contacts and calendar should be synced across them, if you need to email from one or the other, or pick up your iPad and want to check your schedule, for example.
 
Yeah that would be perfect, not to mention a lot of games are using iCloud syncing, and my Gamecenter ID, and whatever else... makes sense to have it all in one place :)

Off a recommendation, I figured it was the non-star app but that just duplicated what AppShopper does for me. The spammy named app is the one I wanted - that alerts you to paid games that are now free.
 
After updating my iPod Touch (3rd gen) to 5.0 and now 5.0.1, it has been acting all kinds of funky. Any changes I do to the MP3 tags in iTunes on Windows isn't reflected any more on the player itself. Same if I add some album artwork, it simply won't show up when I play the track on the player itself. And occasionally, something seems to go wrong since if I try to play a certain track on the player, the player immediately skips over the track, but if I plug it to my computer and try to play the same track through iTunes, it works fine.

Anyone know what might be the issue? I've removed all tracks and restored my iPod, but it's still acting up. I've also reinstalled iTunes on my PC in case it's some strange driver problem, but no dice.
 
I don't think there's anything new in 5.1, but let us know if there's any battery improvements and if the Safari crashes has been fixed on iPad 1.
 
The hell. I'd think that a .1 update would bring at least a couple of noticeable new features or tweaks.

I am disappoint.
 
Dont know if anyone has this problem, but I created a reoccurring event in my calendar, weekly thing, and sometimes I dont need that event to occur on certain weeks, so I delete that instance only from the calendar. But it'll still set off the alarm when it comes to that day, even though I deleted the event. Is this a bug?
 
Stoopid question time:

My wife got a 4S a few weeks ago, then last week got a brand new MacBook Pro. She was using a Windows machine before, and when plugging into the MacBook it is saying it has to erase her iPhone because it is a different library.

We did a backup of the phone, then restored from backup. But it still says "must erase contents" or whatever.

How the hell do we stop this? Just erase it, then restore from backup?

I finally got to try it after waiting forever for the website to load so I could download the desktop client. Works like a charm, and I hope AT&T doesn't catch on like they have for the jailbreak tethering methods (the most prominent one being MyWi).

The only things I don't like about it are that you need the phone connected through USB and that it only shares the 3G with one device. So no keeping my phone in my pocket while I browse on the train I guess.
 
So, I just discovered that iTunes Match eliminates the ability to choose what songs and playlists get synced automatically to your iPhone. What the hell is the point of that? If I want to add a specific album or playlist to my iPhone I now have to download it through the Cloud? Is there any way to fix that?

I bought it. I was skeptical at first but decided to bite. $15 for a one time admission just so my PC can have internet access anywhere I get 3G coverage is worth it. Apple finally pulled it from the App Store though. Glad I bought it. I'm actually using it right now as I submit this post. The 3G connection is awesome, no complaints whatsoever. Good job to the developers of this app. I just wish there was Wi-Fi connectivity, multitasking (because you cannot exit the app, if you do then the connection will be lost from your PC). Obviously the ones that purchase the app, will probably not getting sort of updates to the app at all. Sad but its something for those that like to have their PC with them and want to surf in areas there isn't any Wi-Fi hotspots available.
 
I'm so glad my carrier just enables Personal Hotspot by default. Everyone should be able to use their purchased data any way they want.
 
Can someone explain the difference between wifi sync, and auto downloading purchases? I finally got my iPad updated, so now I have that and an iPod 4th gen. I don't have wifi sync turned on, so if I buy a game on my iPad, my iPod also downloads it, and my mac mini downloads it.

Would it be better to turn on wifi sync and turn off auto downloads?
 
Personally I found the wifi sync unreliable and considering I charge my phone at the PC it seemed pointless to mess around with it when I can just plug it in, but in theory yeah - not sure how it handles multiple connected devices though.
