Bizarre. I own () and ripped it myself and even though that was a decade ago, I can't imagine I ripped it that low, but sure enough iTunes thinks it is "80kbps". VBR error maybe? I'll re-rip.
Third Eye Blind - Darwin is VBR, but I think most of the track is silence (it's a secret track) so maybe the average bitrate is below 96kbps even though the actual song part is above.
And I have no idea where I got the VVVVVV soundtrack, I think from some indie promotion of some kind. Weird. I'll check into it.

Yeah VBR and songs with lots of silence will get you a low bitrate. I would just convert those to AAC or something from iTunes, that way iTunes Match will recognize them.
Yes, the website and control panel have the exact same contacts that are on his phone now, and he's never bothered with backups/restoring/editing contacts so I don't know how he could have caused them to disappear by user error. This has been the worst experience with an Apple product we've ever had.

iMessage is great for your people on Apple gear. Works flawlessly.
Or grab Whatsapp Messenger for multi-messenger compatibility.
EDIT: Google+ has an iPhone app if she wants to still use Google Chat.

I use beejive for all my instant messaging needs. it includes google, facebook, aim, msn, yahoo etc, but beejive isn't free. However Meebo does the same thing and is free. i think you just have to deal with ads on meebo

Naah, you should give the gift card as a christmas gift since they don't sell them where I live.

itunes match is quite fiddly and has some weird little intricacies
e.g. why are there mp3s greyed out and unplayable on my iphone, when I know they are already stored locally on the phone? because they're 'unmatched'?

That's not too bad. It took me about 2+ weeks to upload my 8,000 unmatched songs, because of random errors, stops and starts and the slow as hell upload speeds.
I still don't have my entire library correct, though, because I have a few bands whose discographies seem to only give me errors, and I really don't feel like re-ripping everything from disc...
They're grayed out because they're uploaded. They're in your library but not on your computer. You can redownload them. If you want to delete them from the server you have to delete them again once they're grayed out.
And yeah I know what you mean. In my huge amount of time I left my computer on for days at a time. It probably took 6 real time days to get them all up there.
Anyone else finding iMessages frustrating to use?
Nearly all of the time when I want to initiate a conversation with my friend, the iMessage will never send and I don't see a Delivered or Read sign and after around 5 minutes it will send a text instead.
When he replies, then it'll work as normal however I have known it sometimes to stick with texts from both me and them.
If I message another person it's absolutely fine and works like it should. My friend says it's the exact same for him.

Tried disabling and then re-enabling iMessage?
Just tried it, still the same problem. Might ask my friend to do it too (provided I can actually send him a message!)
Are you sure your friend has a data or wifi connection at the time you're sending it to him?
It'll try for five minutes to send an iMessage and if it still can't reach the other user (because they have no internet), it'll send a text. If the user sends a text back, you guys will both start having a text message conversation and your next message will default to a text message.
Yep, he's connected to wifi which works and I'm connected to mine.
I asked him to switch the iMessage setting off and on but still no luck. Looks like we both might have to reset our phones.

Whenever I'm buying a tv series on my iPad, say Walking Dead, it tells me it will download the HD version and put the SD version in my purchased page or something like that. So if I ever delete this and redownload it from the cloud, am I going to be stuck with the SD version or am I not understanding it correctly? I'm curious before I download anything else cause that is a pretty thing to have in place if so.

I was having this issue with my wife. It was more from my wife's perspective. She never saw me on iMessage. I was also having some weird internet issues where I would be connected to 3G or wifi, yet the internet would not work unless I restarted my phone. I had my phone replaced and have had no issues since. His phone might have the same issue.

I think it's just telling you that if you want the SD version that's where you can find it. But I never purchase TV shows from iTunes so I could be wrong. I don't see why it would lock you out of re-downloading HD content though.
I'm not sure either. The season of Walking Dead that I bought doesn't specify HD in the purchased section which makes me more curious. Anybody have an HD TV series they can redownload to check out?
EDIT: I just tried it. If you download the HD version, it gives you the option to download either the SD or HD version again. Pretty cool.

I've uploaded all my albums, and it's managed to match the majority of them so far, and it all works really well, so it's £22 well spent as far as I'm concerned.
All I've left to do is my custom albums, and I'm wondering how it's going to handle them. For example, I have an album I've made with all the songs from my childhood, it's about 500 songs in size. Is it still going to match them, and just keep my tags that I've gave them, or is it going to upload them all?

It will match everything it can, and leave the tags as they are.

Just got Match and I'm getting the higher quality music files. Brilliant deal for the price. Even if I cancel after the year I'm happy.
Here's the best way to get the higher quality files.
so I boot up into windows to play some games and decide to see how itunes match works on a secondary computer. pretty neat. I login and turn on match and, sure enough, within 10 seconds, all my music is there. all my playlists. all the music, artwork, lyrics, song ratings, playcounts. all there.
and if I double click to play a song, it just streams it and works exactly as I want it to. it doesn't permanently download anything to the hard drive unless I tell it to, so I don't need to manage that at all.

I remember for many years when I had a laptop with a smallish hard drive thinking about how a networked media drive would be required in the house to make iTunes play nice with multiple machines since it was so database dependent. But now I have access to the entire library and can add tracks on whatever machine I'm on and they'll show up back on my main Mac or on a windows computer anywhere else. that old problem is pretty much a non issue now with this service.

Yep, they actually just clarified that it'll stream if you're using it on your computer. Pretty neat.

hey so im at my friends house and he just got an ipad1. having a little trouble figuring out how to stream his itunes library from his windows xp based laptop. turned on home sharing amd am signed in on both the pc and the ipad but not seeing the option amywhere under settings! would love some help, thanks.

On the iPad, in the Music app, touch More, then Shared, then pick your shared library.

they only introduced a white model. nothing else has changed. they're not running the A5 chip.
Has this feature always been available? I just found out about it last night, and it doesn't strike me as something related to an installed jailbreak tweak.

Not new, no. I think that was introduced in iOS 4.
That's dissapointing. When marketing iTouch they have been focusing on gaming alot, but now it will be inferior in that regard compared to iPhone and iPad.

maybe they'll give it a proper refresh with the iPad around March'ish, but I wouldn't count on it. Although I do find it hard to believe they'd let it lag 1 gen behind the iPhone for much longer. They put the A4 into it just 3 months after the iPhone 4 came out sporting that exact processor.
I guess this is what happens when new iPhones are announced after the usual september iPod revamp.
