iOS Gaming Dec/Jan: GET

Not sure what this is but I like it

http://youtu.be/ERnEmDcblt8
Translated from the game's site
The pilot Nolan Carter crashes on a distant planet. To survive, he follows a mysterious, rhythmic signal to its source, he hopes for help. What he discovered, however, all calls into question what he has not believed in and makes him doubt his sanity.

Monolith is a classic adventure that tells a science fiction short story. The average game time will be around 4 to 5 hours.

Style and atmosphere of the 50 detailed, hand-drawn scenes based on genre models such as "The Dig" or "Beneath a Steel Sky".

Cel-shading technology provides a perfect combination of 3D characters and 2D backgrounds.

The game will be released in Q2 2015 for Windows, iOS and Android.

Adding Gunbrick to my purchase list, the flash game was great but the mobile version looks to top it by far, especially with dat art.

Have you played Meltdown? If so compare it to Space Marshalls

It's much more story oriented. Dialog boxes, etc. Little slower paced than Meltdown but the AI seems pretty aggressive (so don't think it's a cake walk). Even though stealth is not required, you definitely should use it if you want to be successful (at least the cover shooting option, but sneaking up on enemies is also cool).

I haven't played it real long but really like what I have played so far.

That sounds great. Been wondering how well the stealth works ever since it was announced (I love stealth games). Is it a sufficient enough system to go completely stealth, or is it for mostly just a bit of an upper hand befor starting a battle?

Is there a stealthy sort of takedown ability if you sneak behind a guy or something?

And thanks for the translation Bronx

I'd say stealth is more to give you an upper hand. There is no "takedown" ability unless it's added later in the game. And all of your weapons, at least to start, are guns so if there's an area of multiple enemies, you are going to make noise and the others will attack. BUT your first attack can be stealth and it also helps take down when there is just one enemy around. You can sneak up behind them and aim towards them and it'll say something like "ambush" and you fire and kill them.

The stealth is more remaining unnoticed and taking them by surprise the turns into a gun battle. There are stones you can throw to distract them too.

It's a nice stealth-action combo IMO.

One big thing I forgot to mention is that the DSS is not run and gun. The stick for shooting is pulled back and let go to fire. No auto fire.

Hope that helps!

The iPad version of Frozen Synapse is on sale for $2.99. I got the Android version in a Humble Bundle but honestly, I like strategy games, but I had a really hard time learning it. And frankly am amazed that they just released an iPhone version of it as I just can't see how well it would adapt to a small screen.

That said I know it's a very well regarded game so go for it if it's up your alley. Particularly with so many new iPad owners around here lately.

I love stumbling on unexpected Hoplite praise. This is from PC-focused site RockPaperShotgun
One of the games I played and loved more than any of the others in 2014 was Hoplite. It didn’t make it onto our Bestest Best list because it was released in December of 2013. On iOS. It’s a single-screen turn-based tactical game with a handful of enemy types and special abilities that can be played to completion in less than half an hour, and it has one of the tightest and smartest rulesets in existence.

The Depths of Tolagal, a commercially released expanded version of a free browser game, is a full roguelike experience with some of Hoplite’s tactical trickery threaded through its design. I could spend thousands of words on Hoplite without properly articulating its genius, but, in part, it’s a simple case of the challenge being perfectly pitched. As soon as a level begins, everything is predictable – every movement of every enemy and every hitpoint lost or taken – which means that failure can always be traced back to one of your decisions.

Holy moly - that was a serious price increase Apple just enacted in the EU app-store.
For instance the Baldur's Gate games went from the equivalent of €8,72 to €10,6 in my store. Dragon Quest 8 just crawled above €21.

Auch.

Prices are weird at the moment with different EU price points for the same US one (e.g: 0.99$ -> 0.99€ or 1.14€). I think we should wait and see if some of these aren't mistakes.

Edit: EU prices have now been fixed. 0.99€ = 0.99$. Sol Invictus is correctly priced at 0.99€ for example.

Thanks for the info awp. That's a tad of a let down. Would like to see a fleshing out of the stealth aspects in further episodes.

Is the game linear? Or do you like pick what missions to go on? How does it work?

Game seems linear but there is a world map so not sure if that changes (so far the main use is if you want to replay a mission to achieve a higher score).

Out of curiosity, I asked Pixelbite on Twitter about more stealth attacks. They said there are more in development.

Apparently you do get access to a throwing axe (obviously would be quieter) at some point in the current version.

Awesome! Thanks for doing that. Let me know what you think of the axe when you get it too

Pako got updated with new levels and vehicles

Is there going to be a January thread? Or we partying like it is 2014?
A few pages back:
I may not have time to put up January's thread in a timely manner. Anyone else want to jump in as host on short notice?
Given that it's past a week into January, I guess it would be good to move to a new thread. I'd start it, but I have my hands filled with other stuff at the moment

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
Picked up Space Marshals. Fantastic. Just very well done. Will post more when I finish.

I kind of thought since it already is well into January and this thread remains active, including a lot of posts about games released in January, that it might be just as good to keep this one going. Otherwise, we'd also lose conversations about those releases unless the posts were also moved.

Maybe he thread title could just be changed to something like December/January?

I'm also pretty busy with work ATM due to some back issues tha caused me to lose some time. I would guess the only one who could change it would be the OP or a mod anyway.

"Coming soon to mobile"
Kingdom
It's an expanded successor of a flash game
Kingdom is an atmospheric exploration/strategy game. It is about taking the time to notice your environment and enjoying it, but using what you learn to your advantage. It's simple but difficult. Establish a kingdom and ride out to discover how the world changes. Supply coins to your loyal citizens to build an economy and a fortress. Defeat is inevitable, so have a last look at the sun as it sets on your kingdom.

Even though I didn't need and don't really have the time for yet another game, I ended up picking up Hero Emblems. Anyone who enjoys match-3/RPG combos absolutely needs to grab it. So incredibly polished. Feels like it could have been something that came from a publisher like Square-Enix doing a puzzle take on its own RPGs. And to be premium, thank God, is just the icing on the cake.

Between that, Space Marshall and Gunbrick, best release week in not just 2015 but in quite a long time. And I keep going back to Gunbrick, which is so brilliant that it will have to be an amazing year for iOS for it to not be included in my top 10 list at the end of the year.

And I still have all these iPad games I was trying to catch up on at a time when life is throwing so many more important things at me. What am I thinking? I need an intervention.

And now back to...work, medical issues and misbehaving kids. Life sucks. Just put me in a cushioned room with my iPad.

It's been the whole day I'm trying to buy Hero Emblems without success...apparently it's still being modified for the price raise in Europe.

Come on Apple!!!

All the stellar praises don't help too.

Love You to Bits looks so good.

Space Marshalls downloading

Shoutout iOS for making what a $15 game would be on other platforms be only $5

^^^ Why did you post that JCho?!?!?

I've had some interest in that game due to those animations but held off. Now, what is going to hold me back from buying it?

Urghh, I'm going to drown in a sea of iOS apps.

Space Marshal is so much better than Meltdown IMO. Just the fact that you can aim without shooting and can cancel your shots tell you that this isn't your typical dual-stuck shooter. Stealth is a tool in your arsenal rather than the focus, allowing you to flank enemies, get critical hits, trick enemies into grouping up to take them out with grenades. The controls feel tight and are very responsive, allowing you to seamless crouch and move into cover or swap guns. A hub area between areas let you modify your loadout and gear, from various body armor and grenades to SMGs, assault rifles, sawed-off shotguns, and more. The visuals are detailed, the environments are varied, and the shooting feels satisfying

Good write up. I'd say it's the best non-arcade DSS on iOS (with the many Radiangames efforts nailing the more arcade type experience).

Hey JCho, how did you hear about that Dolphin sale anyway? I guess it has something to do with the price changes going on around the world but AppZapp is dead in the water right now. Hasn't updated with sales in like 20 hours.

I've been playing kotor on the iPad fora couple hours. I dig it but steam has it on sale for $4.99. Should I give up on the iOS version and play it on pc?

Because I still use touch arcade and that thread is pretty active.

Also I watch list almost every game I see on touch arcade haha

I don't see why. I have played both versions and the iOS is the better one. Native wide screen and cloud saves.
Because the iOS version of every game is always the worst. I was reading a thread yesterday about Final Fantasy VI, in which many people were against the iOS version without even trying it.

Damon, those price increases are heavy!! Apple raised everything to a '99 cents "ending". For example, oceanhorn costs 4,99 instead of 4,49 now and apps which were available for 5,99 now net you 6,99... Price increases in higher value apps are even more incredible.

Glad to see people picking up this game. Really great stuff. So much better than all the crappy F2P "RPG" match threes. Just amazing quality for a small dev.

I'm already 4 hours in, it's just amazing.
If I discovered the devs are (the best) Square Enix in disguise, I would believe it.
