iOS Gaming July 2014: With Sunburned iOS Devices And Sweaty Fingers All Around

Made a thread but it flopped, so I'll ask here:

Why are iOS devices so unreliable with game saves? (And how do you fix that?)

Was finishing up The Room 2, it crashed... And my save is gone!
Similar ocurrences have happened to me before with Infinity Blade, PvZ2, Kingdom Rush, King of Dragon Pass (gutted), World Of Goo, Scribblenauts, Superbrothers and Ghost Trick.

It's fucking unacceptable.

About to embark on a Monster Hunter FU playthrough and this possibility is very frightening, considering the nature of the game.

Am I alone in this?

That is fucked. Never had it happen myself though, played nigh on a thousand hours on my iPad too.

Bought Final Fantasy Tactics today. I have an idea of what I'm getting into, as I tried out the GBA version when I were a kid (at that time I were completely bored) I just hope there's a good story that goes along with it. I'm mostly into Final Fantasy because of the stories.

There sure is a lot of story. The value of which depends on how much you like floaty insubstantial conversations about destiny or duty or some shit. The game is really excellent though, enjoy!

I'm seriously enjoying iOS gaming now.

Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite is really sucking me into it's many detailed mechanics and environment. It's awesome to be up against big monster. I have always wanted to like Monster Hunter but it wasn't until this mobile releases that I have really gotten into it. Can't wait to try out the online part as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics is actually right up my alley as well. I don't play many SRPG's and really want Fire Emblem, but FFT will do and I love the cutscenes. Only thing that annoys me a bit here in the start of the game is the camera.

I also enjoy Rollercoaster Tycoon 4, and totally see it's worse than the 3 prior games in the series, but it's nice to have it on my phone, so I can build and expand when I want. I still haven't gotten into a situation where I need to spend real money, but I only play it in small bursts.

Candy Crush Saga is another game my parents have gotten me into. They play it every day, and I never knew why but now that I know how to play it, it actually can be a little addicting - again in small bursts. I don't mind having to wait to get lives in order to be able to continue.

Other games I really enjoy right now are QuizUp (super fun), Wave Wave (love these kind of games), Ridiculous Fishing, Hitman Go, The Room 1 and San Andreas.

I'm late to the party, but damn, it's awesome to have Bastion, Limbo, and Stealth Inc on the go

Also picked up Oceanhorn. Game is fantastic. I've never played a Zelda game so my enjoyment isn't clouded by nostalgia like a lot of reviews. Such a gorgeous game, tight controls, fun gameplay, a ton of content

So, Monument Valley or Tengami?
Looking to get one or the other so please don't reply with "both."
MV for sure. Tengami's a bit eh... it just doesn't feel as slick or clever when you play it as the trailer would suggest. MV is one of the iOS masterpieces on the other hand.

So I've been playing DotP 2015 the past couple of days, and I am sad to report that they've finally mucked up what has always been a stellar game with iap.

Cards earned through grinding are distributed in random packs with a rarity distribution just like real Magic booster packs (you get one per win), and it seems like you can even get more copies than you could possibly use for a card. There's no way to exchange duplicate singles for the cards you need in a set, either. Good luck ever getting the four copies of a rare you need to be competitive without shelling out for the high-end iap.

What's worse, buying the full unlock doesn't actually get you everything. There is still a good chunk of cards locked up in the premium boosters at $2 a pack. With no singles market or trading capacity, the iap in this game is outrageous and compared to the stellar market Blizzard has on Hearthstone, it is a complete embarrassment for Wizards of the Coast. We won't know until people figure out the best combos, but it might actually end up being more expensive to build a competitive deck in DotP 2015 than it is in Magic Online, as there is no way to get the Premium cards without opening booster after booster and crossing your fingers.

On top of that the game has some awful bugs, in particular mana selection. There is a planeswalker in Theros who can turn your lands into islands. The game will not use these for colorless mana selection until all of your other lands are used, making it a lot harder to get your off-blue cards on the board and basically breaking the card that planeswalker is using. This can happen to you even if you turn on manual mana selection. The game is lousy about using only one of your land types and then moving on to the other regardless of what you have in your hand, regardless of whether the auto-select toggle is on or off. There doesn't seem to be any workaround here other than running a mono deck. Preferably a blue one. Of course, the game only starts you off with one dual-color deck...wanna switch? Gotta grind those boosters or pay for the "full" unlock.

The campaign is still fun and will be more fun when they fix the frustrating mana selection issues, so I'd say it's worth the $10 to unlock the full campaign if you enjoyed what they did with last year's campaign; it's quite similar and maybe even tuned a little better. It's a lot more fun fighting a hydra deck with a bunch of different hydras instead of a hydra deck with forty copies of the same hydra or whatever ridiculous shit that was. But I'd hold off and make sure they fix the mana selection. It's a big problem. The iap issues make me very sad; with the deck customization options available this year they were right on the verge of making the DotP multiplayer a lot more exciting, but I suspect the iap will make for a frustrating environment.

My faith has been restored/has retreated lol in regards to ios gaming

started playing clash of clans and i just cannot stomach the games main mechanic which is....waiting or paying not to wait......

I don't even get how this is legal lol a game that forces you really to just pay or wait so goddamn long for something to happen

what if pay to play games weren't that way and were actual games? I'm genuinely curious because the notion of sleeping a game while things happen is appealing but taking hours and limiting the amount of workers you have to the point that the only viable option is to buy just doesn't feel right

Yeah if there's one F2P aspect I can't stand, it's timers. Everything else I can deal with, but being forced to pay or play just throws any excitement or interest a game might have provided out the window

However there are many fair and balanced F2P games

Well that sucks, I'll just roll with 2013 until they go back to that model.

Okay, I haven't played many RPGs on IOS, but puzzle games are a different story.
(I'll add links, etc. later)

Perfect Paths
Polarity
Incoboto
Instantion
Sushi Snake
LightGlide
Casuality
Ion Bound
Ending
Bicolor
Lums
Biosis
Interlocked

Oh snaaaaaaap. Thank you very much!! I'll check all of those + Gesundheit! out tonight!

Anyone tried Gun Girls Z? In the mood for a fun side scroller (and the ingame graphics are a lot tamer, and more appealing, than the splash images)

Anyone here playing Orbitum?
It's a really good twitch game with an awesome soundtrack. Essentially you're in constant rotation around a black hole, always being pulled closer to the center. Reaching the center destroys you. You need to swap orbits to keep your distance from the center, collect pick ups, and evade red hazards. Timing is extremely crucial here and the game gets very intense once the speed increases. There's also a lite version to try

No problem, enjoy! (Never did get around to adding links and images)

Trying the lite version now, I am on the hunt for a new game after finishing Sine Mora, Monsters Ate My Birthday Cake, Pigs Cant Fly and Sky Tourist Blitz Trip.

Edit: The search ended and Blek was the winner.

Now that Google launched Ingress for iOS is anyone playing it? Is it good? What is it all about?

I "played" it for a while on android. It's weird, kinda a mix of treasure hunting in the real world, encouraging walking to different areas and exploration.

I couldn't really see much point to it besides a cool interface though, but if you're already walking places(like college), it's kinda cool.

So i HATE virtual joysticks/touch controls in action games

I recently bought an ios7 controller for this reason

I cant find many good action games that support controllers though. Any tips?

QB1-0
iTunes | Trailer
A lone pilot cut-off from home is trapped in a strangely familiar, toroidal pocket of two-dimensional space.
Navigating an ever-growing shower of rocky planetoids the situation is growing desperate as numerous strange and aggressive space-dwelling entities attack.
Only fast reactions and a large slice of luck will ensure your survival in a fast-paced, retro arcade shooter.

QB1-0 released in 2012. It received a Universal update in May, a new trailer in June. I just discovered the game today. Searching online, I couldn't find a single review and that's a damn shame. If you're a fan of arcade shooters, I recommend giving OB1-0 a try.

At first, I wasn't feeling the game, mainly due to the controls. They're relative touch, but not your usual v-stick style. Instead, your ship is perpetually moving and firing and dragging your finger rotates your ship. It's definitely a different movement style that takes some getting used to, but the controls work well, revealing themselves to be very maneuverable and responsive, allowing you to spin on a dime. That level of maneuverability is key to survival here; within a wave or two, you're dealing with more than simple asteroids. Dangerous enemies begin emerging: quick homing rocket-spewing ships, slow ships that leave bullets in their wake, ships that unleash blasts of lightning that streak across the screen. The frantic action ramps up fast and power-ups that provide extra lives, upgrade your firepower, and more only add to the chaos.

QB1-0 isn't just a fun game, but a stylish one as well. There are some Geometry Wars influences, from the area backdrop warping beneath you and the geometric shapes, but in the midst of battle, with particles and projectiles and ships and asteroid debris flying everywhere, QB1-0 stands out as a visual spectacle. Adding to that spectacle is the fact that the arena is "open", with you, your enemies, projectiles all warping around the screen.

Compared to other games in the genre, QB1-0 is very bare bones. You won't find any extra modes, or upgrades, or different ships to unlock. You won't even find an options menu. But you will find a stylish frenetic arcade shooter with responsive controls, that fills the screen with particles and enemies and bullets, and for that reason, I think QB1-0 is worth checking out if you enjoy these kinds of games. You can purchase QB1-0 for $0.99

I haven't played enough to confirm but I read a post on touch arcade saying that you did not get duplicates past deck limits so it was 72 wins against the computer to unlock and 14 boosters to unlock everything.

Huh, what could it be? If it's a space related game, there are a number of possiblities. Spacewrights, Tiny Trek, Space Age, Drifter? Is it even an IOS game?

Eh... :P

None.
Yes.

(it's not hard to find out tough, it's no real secret).
I'm sure it will be hugely popular here too, when the time will come (not too soon unfortunately).

Just beat Final Fantasy IV.

I definitely suggest anyone wanting to play it to use an Augments guide, since the way you acquire and miss them is entirely obscure. Dualcast can make a world of difference on Rosa and it's a missable one. Also, using a map for the last dungeon is a must. It's just not very fun to run around in a huge maze-like area with no way of stopping random battles.

The game is entirely playable with none of this of course, but knowing what the hell is going on with the Augments (and who to not use them on) and knowing your way around the last dungeon enhance the experience imo.

Fun times. I'll nab The After Years whenever it goes on sale for $8.

Tiny Thief is fantastic. I've just hit the paywall, but I've had an outrgeous amount of fun for free so far and have no problem coughing up for the last three chapters. I hope it continues to get support.

What I have played recently:

Beach Buggy Blitz: A fun arcade styled racer but can be frustrating if you don't have a iOS 7 MFi game controller.

Kart Sweetie: A kart racer inspired by KartRider (in terms of presentation and gameplay) with an energy system.

Dragon Finga: Ragdoll Kung Fu-inspired survival game that has a boss wooped my ass.

Millie: Fun but hard puzzle game with a charming setting.

Atom Run: Vector without the IAPs and emphasis on beating the clock.

Assassins Creed Pirates: Enjoyable, but easy spin-off that can be played without any IAPs.

In other news, Kritika: Chaos Unleashed is now on the US App Store by Gamevil. Its a mobile version of the pc Real-time action MMORPG with IAPs (like the pack that costs $99.99). I'm currently downloading it since the game is being available globally.

Oh, so I made a Canadian account so I could check out soft launched games. Currently playing Rovio's Retry

In a word? Fantastic

First off, I hope so much they don't throw out the current F2P structure for something more obnoxious because as of now, Retry is probably one of most generous, fairest F2P games I've played. You collect coins while flying, and use these coins to unlock mid-level checkouts. Not only do these checkpoints only cost a single coin (or by watching an ad), they stay unlocked even when you play the level again. That's also the only currency in the game

Now it's probably easy to see some of the screenshots and dismiss Retry as yet another game trying to capture that Flappy Bird throne. But thinking that just does disservice to how good Retry is. This is one of the best one touch twitch games I've played in a while. It's a game that requires skill and finesse and with the proper reflexes, you can one-shot a level without even using checkpoints. The controls feel super responsive; the level design is diverse, smart, and challenging; the visuals are colorful and vibrant.

Forgot Angry Birds Sequel X or Spinoff Y. I think Retry might be Rovio's best game yet. If anything, it feels fresh and it's just a fun well crafted experience.

God I want this. Rovio "Rocks"!!

was it a pay wall? Thought the last few stuff are paid post release dlc?

"paywall" is the wrong terminology here. Paywall insinuates that there is something in place to prevent you from playing the game. You've finished the game. There is additional content to purchase if you wish-but there are no timers, purchasable consumables, etc in this game.

Plus Tiny Thief is a brilliant game. I don't want anyone to read that and get the wrong impression of it. Everyone should play it.

I finally picked up Minecraft with the new release and there is a memory bug in it :( apparently they're working on a fix, I hope it comes soon because I was just getting into it.

Looks like an updated version is out. Haven't seen a "Out of Memory" issue yet

I know what a paywall is. I was just using the phrase literally. There's nothing more I can do without paying for more content. Which I am more than happy to do. In fact, i did it. Everyone should indeed play this little gem.

if i remember correctly its not a paywall, its a DLC. Also Started playing Schoolidol, as far as music games go i like it.

Can anyone PM me a US code of IGN's free game of the month? They're not available here in Brazil :(

edit: Thanks Fuu! :)

How is Panzer Corps on iPad? I see it is on sale for $9.99 (regularly $19.99).

It's the same price on Steam but I've found that playing with my iPad on the couch is a whole lot more comfy then hunched over a computer.
