iOS Gaming July 2014: With Sunburned iOS Devices And Sweaty Fingers All Around

Anybody else playing Magic Duels 2015?

I finished the tutorial last night. Not crazy about the format this year--basically you pick a color at the start and get a premade deck with good-not-great cards, and every win nets you a "booster" with extra cards. If you want to build a deck with a color other than your starting one, though, it looks like you'll have to grind a LOT.

The in-game interface is a lot better but the menus are just awful. Navigation is clunky and every option other than the one you've scrolled to is blurred out.

Everything feels like it was designed around "let's push people to pay extra to unlock all the cards" rather than "let's improve on what didn't work last year." I like the ability to build a custom deck, but for Magic newbies (which is supposed to be Duels' demographic), it's a lot nicer to pick from a premade deck and tinker with individual cards.

Has there been any new decent tower defence games released recently?

Need to scratch my TD itch.
This game released a few weeks ago, but it's a very interesting take on your usual TD game

Uprise

Instead of placing turrets, you need to use the incoming enemies against themselves by redirecting their projectiles with reflectors, portals, etc.

So essentially a puzzle TD game

It's free. A bit lacking in content but it's fun and unique
---
My other recommendation, if you haven't played it yet, is OTTTD

OTTTD

It combines your usual TD gameplay with RTS and RPG elements. A colorful art style and very over the top (hence the name), enemy body parts everywhere. Along with placing towers, you control a team of three heroes and can customize their loadout. Each of the seven heroes has their own unique skill tree

Fates Forever:

On the one hand, amazingly polished, the UI, Menu's and general aesthetic are top notch. On the other hand, it is, as mentioned, very simple. None of the strategy of Dota that I could see in the first few hours, no jungling, no elites / world mobs (and I say this as someone who hardly played a MOBA).

I guess it's the price for a mobile version that clocks in at 400mb. I love the developers attitude though, like the anti-EA.

Also, the animal / furry thing annoys me, would prefer the usual variety in characters.

Thanks I'll take a look at these :)

Over the past 2 days I have gotten Hatch, Ass Creed Pirates, Out There, Wave Wave, San Andreas, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Hitman Go, Republique, Dice Jockey, Wrong Way Racing, SolForge, Ridiculous Fishing, Plague Inc, The Grading Game, Primal Flame, Table Tennis Touch, Tetris, Sword & Poker 2, The Room Two, Cut the Rope Experiments, Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 and Rayman Fiesta Run and some smaller games.

I guess I'm a little back into iOS gaming.

What Final Fantasy should I get? FF6? Tactics?

I'm collaborating with Game Mob now! Looking forward to this opportunity. Here are my impressions of Causality, cross posting from my main blog. I had actually mentioned Casuality here a few pages, definitely worth checking out if you enjoy minimalist puzzle games. Has a lot of levels, varied mechanics, and it's very generous (120 levels for free)

WHY!?! that game is a horrible mistake, o the RCT franchise...IMO also i hear Tactics is good.

You monster :

I just can't help it, sorry guys. ^_^

I love the RCT franchise and having it on mobile is great but I will surely realize how bad the IAP is handled waiting for hours if I don't want to buy further in-game.

At least I got some great games. I especially like Hitman Go, San Andreas, Monster Hunter, Wave Wave, Ridiculous Fishing, Wrong Way Fishing and The Room 1. I need to spent more time with Republique.

Are any of you playing QuizUp? It's probably what I have had the most fun with the past days. We could add each other as friends in the game.

Haha, you're crazy! Don't buy any more games- play the ones you have! That's a sure fire way to ignore and not give the time to 95% of the games you bought. You have some gems, play them and don't buy anything else!

Mind you, I AM playing them. I'm totally enjoying getting into Monster Hunter but I'm switching games a lot and enjoying them that way - playing what I'm in the mood for. I would say that I am focusing on Hitman Go and The Room 1.

Many of the other games like Wave Wave, Fishing and Table Tennis are casual games I play in the bus, on the train or on my commute. :)

But I would really like a Final Fantasy game for my iPhone.

Wave Wave and Primal Flame...good tastes, man
Those are some awesome games. I especially love Primal Flame's art style and atmosphere

Hah, alright. ;)

Can't go wrong with Tactics. 6 is supposed to be fine *if you can get over the art style change*, which as mentioned is presumably better on iPhone.

Tactics is the safer bet and, I think, better for quick/short play periods.

Just to confuse the issue, I love Tactics but I never could wrap my head around playing it on an ios device. I think the interface as implemented (more a port rather than a design) just doesn't quite work and never feels right.

I'm sure you would get the hang of it after upteen hours of play, but for this reason I recommended FF6 because despite its faults with the changes, they at least make it feel like a game that fits on the platform.

I know I've already said this before but more people really need to check out Doug Dug, so far I'm finding it even more addictive than Ridiculous Fishing which I keep skiping on my ipad for DD.

With all these games installed I come to realize I only have 500MB left on my 32GB device. I'm definitely going with 64GB for my next one. There's just something convenient having everything on the phone.

The art style or color palette really turns me off though.

I'm also curious, which games are you guys looking forward to the most on iOS?

I'm pretty excited about next months Pako; a car chase from the police in small arena like cities. Then Seabeard sounds like an Animal Crossing-like title which is just up my alley. I hope they can deliver on their ambitions.

And of course the heavy hitters like Hitman Sniper, Final Fantasy Agito, Reckless Racing 3 and Hearthstone for iPhone.

Interesting ones seem to be Riot and This War of Mine.

Anything else to look out for?

Is Puzzle & Dragons and Sword & Poker 2 great games?

EDIT:
Got them both already.

Btw, it doesn't seem these iOS threads are as active as they used to be a year ago or when we started out with the monthly format.

What happened?

Have there been any Swocery level big hype titles? These threads have helped me discover a bunch of new titles for which I'm thankful, but I'm feeling zero hype around iOS these days.

I bought it because of this thread. Sorry but I hate it. I absolutely adore the concept, but the controls are just not working for me and I'm not getting any decent scores, nor do I feel encouraged to keep trying.

I'm enjoying Pocket Titans right now:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket-titans/id716040449?mt=8

Love the gameplay, hate the clunky UI outside of the main game. And the occasional AI WTFs your characters make. Really easy to get into.

I had a lot of trouble until I realized I could just swipe and tap anywhere to move the cursor instead of having to directly select everything.

Whatever happened to that Advance Wars knockoff that was supposed to come out soon?

Touch arcade had an article a little while ago about it I think.

Thank you for posting these, it's posts like these that keep me subscribed to iOS GAF threads. Thank you so much once again!
Hey man, glad to be of service. I'm a crazy passionate indie gamer (have a indie game blog, very active on TIGForum and in the Indie threads here, recently starting collaborating with Game Mob to spread the word on under-the-radar IOS games) so I know about tons of games. Probably more than most. I could list more if you'd like :p

That Trestle screen is something almost straight out of Megaman Battle Network. Does it really control that well without buttons?
Trestle actually got a new art style
Bmqw5n3CUAAFFo0.png

From what I've read and seen, and my chats with the developers, the game is actually a twitchy arcade game. It's from Set & Settings, the devs of Irrupt, if you remember that game
But their upcoming Trestle looks to take that gameplay theme, turn it up to eleven, and imbue with an expansive arsenal, a plethora of enemies, and twitchy reflex-testing action. Set on a 3x6 grid, half of this confined arena belongs to you, where you move between spaces, collect weapons and picks up, and generally just try to stay alive. The other half is where all manners of dangerous projectile-spewing, area-smashing, laser-wielding robotic enemies appear. A frantic dance of close calls, evasion, and gunfire ensues, and you'll soon learn that even your safe area isn't as safe as it appears, since enemies can damage tiles or restrict your movement with energy pillars and lasers. Luckily, your character has a wide range of weaponry at his disposal, from your standard plasma bolts and flame thrower to a deadly disc gun and missile launcher.

When do you think Square Enix will have another sale? Maybe Christmas?

Thinking about picking up DQVIII, even though I may regret it.
Most likely their next widespread sale will be in December, yeah. It's not unusual to see some of their games having price drops around October though.

Along with the great list of puzzle games on sale (Threes!, etc.), there is Tengami, I remember when it came out people were saying how polished it was, but with hindsight is it a recommendation seeing as my time will be taken with Threes!, Monument Valley, Blast-A-Way, and Kiwanuka?

Well Monument Valley and Kiwanuka are both short, around two hours or less each. Threes will probably a time sink due to how addictive it can be and Blast A Way has a lot of levels. So not too much of your time will be taken away. I've read that Tengami is also a short experience

If you know of any good indie puzzles or RPGs, please post them! I love puzzlers on my iPhone, especially since I've finished up my annual Sword and Poker 1&2 plays and I'm almost done with Pocket Titans.

The Transworld skateboarding game that came out this week is pretty fun. The IAP does seem almost necessary after only a short while, but they have some IAP bundles that are tempting.

Hey, our company ALL CAPS just recently had a small game jam where we ended up with a simple survival game called "Jawsome".

Thought I would show it to you guys to get some feedback and ideas for improvement perhaps.

It is on both Android and iOS.

I wonder how game jam games fare on this board as the expectations for games seems to be ever higher. Have a good weekend !

Will I miss out on anything if I play Final Fantasy 6 on my phone? I never played the original, so I probably wouldn't notice the differences in art. That said, does the new art have a negative effect on the atmosphere and detail?

Also, I have played Rollercoaster Tycoon 4 for 1 hour only but I don't have any trouble with the IAP so far. It's actually cool enough to play, at least until now.

That's funny because I can't imagine playing FFT with a controller. Tapping a square to move there and zoom pinch twisting about to view is so good. Even the job they did on the menus was very impressive, I thought. Especially for Square who, let's face it, are the kings of half arsed fucked up design decisions.

Okay, I haven't played many RPGs on IOS, but puzzle games are a different story.

Oh, so I made a Canadian account so I could check out soft launched games. Currently playing Rovio's Retry

In a word? Fantastic

First off, I hope so much they don't throw out the current F2P structure for something more obnoxious because as of now, Retry is probably one of most generous, fairest F2P games I've played. You collect coins while flying, and use these coins to unlock mid-level checkouts. Not only do these checkpoints only cost a single coin (or by watching an ad), they stay unlocked even when you play the level again. That's also the only currency in the game

Now it's probably easy to see some of the screenshots and dismiss Retry as yet another game trying to capture that Flappy Bird throne. But thinking that just does disservice to how good Retry is. This is one of the best one touch twitch games I've played in a while. It's a game that requires skill and finesse and with the proper reflexes, you can one-shot a level without even using checkpoints. The controls feel super responsive; the level design is diverse, smart, and challenging; the visuals are colorful and vibrant.

Forgot Angry Birds Sequel X or Spinoff Y. I think Retry might be Rovio's best game yet. If anything, it feels fresh and it's just a fun well crafted experience.
