iOS Gaming June 2015 | The future is now

So did Pita ever say what it was we should we be hyped for? Sometimes it's hard to keep up with his Glorious post history.

LOL!
Actually I jumped the gun too early apparently.
I was pretty sure a very long and detailed preview of the game I'm most hyped about (Deathwatch) was coming that very day, along with much needed details of how the gameplay will actually be (more like Hunters? More like Warhammer Quest? A mix? What about the mission progression? The sync multiplayer? Etc...).

But I was clearly wrong....I'm sure the article will be posted soon anyway (that's all I know, haven't read or know actually anything about the writer reaction and the article itself).

But my 'soon' and devs or journalists 'soon' are very different.

Thanks to everyone mentioning Card Crawl that I missed back in the days being busy with other stuff.
Got it and one hour flew by without noticing.
A tad easy so far...but I guess the meat is constructed mode which I'll try after having unlocked everything.

And yeah I was aware that if I waited 4 more days I could save a whopping dollar.

Back playing.

You know how you might try a game on a whim and it opens your eyes to a genre you weren't interested in before?

Well yeah...Hearthstone is awesome

I've never been into card game before. But this game is so much fun, and has so many layers of strategy and polish.

Hearthstone is good and much more accessible than a lot of the card games out there. I tried games like Ascension and just couldn't get it.

If you like Hearthstone, Earthcore: Shattered Elements is another one worth trying.

-----

Anyone here try The Last Warlock? I've been thinking about it for a while but still haven't bitten. The summoning, spells and graphical style are intriguing. Wasn't sure if it had much of a story to it or if it's just battles / quests strung together.

I found myself really in love with everything Earthcore was doing, but it just never got its hooks in me. Loved the design and campaign structure, but I honestly do 90% of my Hearthstone on my Mac and 10% on my iPhone. Wish Earthcore had a computer client because that's so much easier to fiddle with decks, imo.

The only problem I have with the game is the internet connection requirement. Is this something that can be worked around? It's incredibly disappointing for me, as I do most of my gaming while I am commuting on the subway. I rarely have time to play games when I am at home, so it's kind of a huge bummer.

Other than that, I really love the game.

Hey okno, thanks for the feedback and I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying it! Sorry there is no immediate workaround for internet connection requirement but it's basically at the top of our list for features to add moving forward.

Finally out of soft launch! Download for free now!

If you're a fan of Jetpack Joyride, you should really enjoy this!

Any feedback would be appreciated!

Know this is the wrong thread but since you're here....

I tend to juggle apps that I can get on both iOS and Android. Any clue as to why Radical Reppelling is not compatible with the Shield Tablet?

Chaos Rings 3 is weird. It's a 100% premium game, no IAP, no online required. Yet, there are mechanics that scream f2p, like two currencies, a gatcha system to get different cards, daily quests.

It kind of works though. Every day you get some of the "premium" currency, and every side quest gives you some as a reward too. It makes side quests more rewarding because you are always looking forward to get more coins (which is the more valuable currency) so you can pick new cards or special gear. The addictiveness of a gatcha system can be pretty fun when you know you are not being robbed and you can consistenly try again without spending real money or grinding like crazy. In fact, the game is not grindy at all, and it's pretty fair about giving you resources.

Some people will definitely be offended by such mechanics being present in a $20 dollar game, even if there's no IAP. I'm enjoying though. It's satisfying in some ways. Collecting cards is fun when you don't have to buy them with your money.

RE Radical Rappelling:

- RIan, how come there's no coin doubler in this game? (or I didn't find it).
I think it's the one IAP I got for Jetpack Joyride.

- About the leaderboards, it asked me to connect to Facebook. Then it said the game wouldn't post to Facebook. Then it said that, in order for the leaderboards to work, it must post to Facebook.
Is this right?

Interesting observations! Seems like SE designed the game with an aim to be able to easily switch to F2P when/if revenue from the premium version dries up.

Door Kickers is soft launching in New Zealand and Romania for about 2 weeks, then rolling out it seems.

I was hoping for it this week but hey ho, it sounds like they have added content as well.

I think the framework is here to build a game with broader scope, not just SWAT but get multinational spec ops in there, have GIGN storming a bank siege, SAS on a hijacked airliner etc...

Yeah. If that's the case, I would advise people interested in the game to not take too long to grab it. Or maybe wait if you don't mind f2p.

But it might also be the case that they were planning the game to be f2p, changed the decision in the last minute and then decided to leave the mechanics anyway, albeit balanced to be premium. Who knows.

Speaking of cards. What games with collecting cards mechanics do you guys recommend? With the exception of f2p stuff like Hearthstone. I used to love Storm Casters (a twin stick shooter with a card mechanic), but the game has a gamebreaking bug that was never fixed.

Much different games. Of course, Battleheart: Legacy is purely single player, but it's an excellent dungeon crawler. Really great skill/upgrade system too that allows you to combine elements from as many classes as you want. Touch controls work very well and it's just a blast all around. Gets challenging as well.

Vainglory is also fantastic, but is a completely different animal. As you mention, it's a MOBA but streamlined for mobile while still keeping enough depth to keep it interesting. It was my first MOBA and I didn't find the other players to be jerks. I also haven't spent as much time with it since you need to have 30 minutes or so to play a game and sometimes it's hard for me to know if I'm going to be able to finish. But even if you get Battleheart: Legacy, I'd still give Vainglory a try if you have the space since it's F2P.

Done playing Radical Rappelling, and Halfbrick games, as a whole. The IAP push is way too in your face and gets in the way of my enjoyment of the game(s). Everything in RR is FAR too expensive once you begin to purchase upgrades, and even then you have to spend even more coins to use the upgrades. It feels like a constant grind to get just the smallest advantage and does not feel progressive. The biggest offense to me is that the reel to spin for boosts will have the "auto" button turn itself on randomly. If I turn it off, it should remain off. I've lost over 5.000 coins from it turning itself back on without me realizing it. You could argue I should pay better attention, but for such a twitch action game it's far too easy to just hold to rappel after losing.

It's a shame, because the core game is enjoyable, but it's far too much of a grind to be worth my time.

This is my biggest grip too, but can't agree with you on the rest.
What is expensive, you say, Radical Remix upgrades? Aren't they 2500 -> 5000 -> 10000?
I don't think it's that expensive. This is the main progression of the game, a bit of grinding is expected and welcome.

For the rest of IAPs, I don't really care for them. I won't purchase cosmetic items (among other things, because I don't like them). It's true that they prompts pop up a bit too often, but they aren't really that intrusive.

I'm honestly surprised by the lack of useful IAPs, though. I thought a coin doubler was a no-brainer.

Li Kao's return to iOS weekly report #DELAYED

- We interrupt our scheduled program because of lack of gaming use this week. Instead, let's all enjoy a little bit of rambling. Because rambling is life -

Firstly, I understand it's unoriginal as fuck, but man do I love this new trend of premium pricing on iOS and hope it catches... Win-Win all around for me. Devs have a bigger revenue, they can be a little more ambitious and I'm less likely to be taken for a fool with a disguised slot machine.

Then I would like to mention how the sad Card Hunter situation is to me. I mean, they have lost the race to iOS to some relative copycat, and now they have lost the race to Steam too. Maybe they don't feel it's so bad, maybe polishing is a higher priority, but I can't shake the feeling that this is all really unfortunate.

Also if you are even mildly interested by the rogue-like genre... what are you doing not playing Desktop Dungeons ? Seriously ?
While I will say that the game is maybe a little too much on the puzzle side, and that for full disclosure I didn't have the desire to touch it for two days, the game has one thing going for it : the civ-effect ! Ten minutes sessions my ass, boot that shit up and say goodbye to your next few hours.
I would close this topic by comparing Desktop Dungeons to books. Yeah. It occurred to me that one of the big accomplishments of DD is that it's like a good author, whatever you think about it, one thing is for sure, it's clear it had something to say. And in a genre so shock-full of samey games as the rogue-like genre, that's quite the feat.
Hugely recommended. Also hugely hard

Must resist, will to try Sproggywood is rising.

That's it. This week was less iOS gaming thanks to hours of Desktop Dungeons PC, Card Crawl and 10 000 000 sessions and reading Cycle of the Werewolf by King.
Come to thing of it, what a world we are living in. There is so much I can do, and did, nowadays with a simple iPad. Except sex maybe.
...
Oh, wait.

Note -
Pitta is a lovely Gafer, really. Well he is not so lovely when he keeps destroying your scores in Card Crawl. Bastard.

Looking forward to Card Crawl's sale & update. looks like something i'd want to have on my phone.

right now i feel like i have such a great stable of titles downloaded:
Hitman GO
Kung Fury
Yeti Skiing
The Room Two
Vainglory

all i need is a good pick up and play card game and i'm set for Summer's subway rides to the beach

Thanks, I tried VG first and I'm really digging it. Still really new to the whole MOBA thing, but I might try to get into it.

I'm surprised we don't have a GAF community thread for it - is it not popular?

Radical was made in Unity, which is great for developing on, but there's a bit of a struggle getting it to run great on some platforms.

RE Radical Rappelling:

Re the Coin Doubler, the Red Coin in the Randomizer can be upgraded so you get 5 coins per coin collected, which is somewhat insane on a great run. Just the choice of the guys working on it :)

As for the Leaderboards - in order to get any functionality from the API for Facebook stuff, we need you to say yes to that. The Big, all capitals, "WE WILL NOT POST TO FACEBOOK" is trying to say we won't post without you Sharing. We just use it to get your Leaderboards and nothing else.

The team is looking into the auto-on stuff. It can get annoying. Regarding costumes, if you're not after a specific one, definitely throw cash at the Rucksack and unlock costumes that way. Completing more and more missions earns you a ton of cash when you rank up. I got to some points where I was earning so much I didn't know what to do with it!

The game does also have the Daily Star, which usually nets you some cash, free spins or a new hairduo, and a daily free spin on top of it. I'll pass on your conserns though!

As for the costume pushes, it's going for a Crossy Road styles system with a bit of a twist. Gives people a chance to try costumes when they haven't spent money on them :)

Card Crawl is awesome.

That is all.

I can't wait to unlock every card in normal mode to sink my teeth in constructed mode (which is even more fantastic).

Silly me not to buy it when it came out.
And I'm not even into 'high score' games...but that feeling when you are doing your over 100 points high score and you push your luck a bit too much just to die at last turn with 9 HP against a 10 HP Soul eater...

Oh...that feeling.....

On a related note, Omega Out There expansion is done on iOS at last and will be submitted to Apple in the next hours, according to the dev.

Next month we will probably finally have This War of mine and possibly more solid news about Deathwatch which is approaching the final stages of development.

I'm not ruling out a summer Galactic Keep too.

Next Fall we will probably have Banner Saga 2.
A Simogo game or two.

And I'm surely forgetting about many other premium experiences already scheduled, plus the usual AppStore surprises.

What a GLORIOUS year already.

I'd honestly recommend you use Constructed to get higher scores. Finding the most efficient 5 special cards to get high scores is part of the fun. I'm basically doing Constructed until I unlock everything, then I'll play Normal more.

Doh!
I never thought I could unlock the cards the other way around!!!

Thanks!

Same here it's all I play now haha

Even bought Naxxramas 2 days ago...

Loving it though, even when sometimes I feel cheated when the other guy has exactly the right cards for the right moment.

Oh and I did play another game this morning, Kingdom Rush Frontiers, finally beat the last Iron Man challenge and now have 110/110 stars. :)
