iOS Gaming March 2015 | Beware the IAPs of March

Any good city building games on iOS right now? Been itching to play one since reading about cities skylines.
Not many recent ones I can think of, but we're getting Prison Architect on iPad this year. The game is currently in beta testing

The PC version of 1849 got some positive impressions in the Indie Game thread

Some 2k sales:

BioShock - $2.99
XCOM: Enemy Within -$4.99
NBA 2K15 - $2.99
NHL 2K - $2.99

http://toucharcade.com/2015/03/24/bioshock-xcom-enemy-within-and-more-2k-games-are-on-sale/

prices don't seem to have updated yet.

I almost bought XCOM yesterday. I actually probably would have, but then I found out that it isn't compatible with an ipad mini 1. :/

For $3 I might actually go for Bioshock. It's obviously the worst way to play that game, but at that price I might just go for it anyway.

Is $5 worth Enemy Within if you already own the first one? I bought it a while ago but never started it. Definitely want to give the series a try though.

I think so. They added a ton of content. Having a cyborg soldier makes your team 110% more badass

- A new resource called Meld, allows for cybernetic enhancements
- Mec trooper exoselektons
- Two new alien units (the Seeker, the Mechtoid)
- EXALT - a human faction working against XCOM
- Base Defense mission
- 47 new maps for the single player game, 8 new multiplayer maps

I've never played the first. Since I couldn't get the iOS version I instead bought the first game with enemy within in that 2k steam sale yesterday morning. So I actually don't know, but I think having it on the go with touch controls makes it worth it. Especially at that price.

And as More_Badass pointed out, it adds a ton of content to the first game. The iOS version is supposedly missing a couple maps (in multiplayer?), but I doubt it's anything you'd really miss.

This makes me happy. Great to see a developer releasing a premium game and it working out for him.
http://toucharcade.com/2015/03/24/odd-bot-out-martin-magni-interview/
It's an exciting time for Martin Magni, developer of Odd Bot Out. Just two months after his game's release on iOS and Android, the cutsey sci-fi puzzler has sold enough copies to cover its development costs, and has made Martin a darling of the indie scene.

"My goal was to make something profitable," Martin says from his home in Åtvidaberg, Sweden. "Knowing how hard it is to make a profitable indie game I kept my expenses very low by living on the cheap and doing everything myself. That worked out splendidly! The 25,000 copies I have sold to date covers all of my expenses, even after taxes and Apple's and Google's revenue cuts. 25,000 copies hardly classifies as a ‘hit’ though. That leaves me something to strive for with my next game."

Heads up that Sword & Sorcery is also on sale for $.99 (iPhone) and $1.99 (iPad).

Also did anyone read the articles about Nintendo's Iwata at least disliking the term "Free to Play"? Doesn't say that Nintendo won't use F2P but makes it clear that he doesn't want any IPs to be tarnished. Let's hope that means premium efforts.

I read in other thread that they might consider the "Free to Start" route. Which hopefully means free + game unlock IAP

Edit: I might have misunderstood that though

Nitrome's Silly Sausage is another fantastic addition from them. I know I've played a game with a similar concept before, cant remember what it was, but basically you control an elastic dog traversing a colorful world of danger. Latching onto a surface retracts your body. The game is set up like Smash Hit or Retry, one long level with checkpoints you can stop at. Watching ads or using gems you collect let you unlock a checkpoint. The gameplay is fun and challenging as the mechanics and hazards grew: lasers, saws, spikes, surfaces that can't be grabbed, areas that boost your speed, pipes, crushers, and more. Defintely worth checking out

Trying to find a game that I saw someone playing on the subway.

Looked like it was in a dungeon. There was an ability bar at the bottom of the screen, and I'm pretty sure enemies were also being tapped. Looked like it had a pretty nice art style. It also worked offline, which may set it apart from a lot of other games.

Anyone have any ideas? I know it's a vague description. Should have just asked the name of it.

Idk, man, that's really vague. Was it first person, or could you see your character? 2D, isometric, 3D?

Maybe Battleheart Legacy? You tap on enemies to target and attack them, and your abilites are along the bottom

I might double (?) dip on this I guess. Only have vanilla X-Com on PS3, though wasn't a massive fan of the reimagination of it. Wish it had retained the strategic layer complexity of UFO; and the action layer was for me quite lacking / had some serious flaws.

Still, for AU$6.50 might be worth another run through.

Do you also play on PC? If so, you might want to check out Xenonauts. The general consensus from the reviews and impressions I've read is that it's the true successor to classic XCOM

Ah, don't really game on the PC, as I'm in front of a computer 12 plus hours a day, every day coding.

I think I already have Xenonauts kicking around somewhere? And all the original series. (Do appreciate the recommendation)

Is there improvements on the strategic layer on Enemy Within? Or is it mainly just improvements on the formula?

I know it was in Best New Games, I don't remember if it was featured

Getting into Best New Games is featuring, just not the best featuring you could get.

But, yeah, not a great story in support of suggesting the paid model is very viable, even with Apple love (not that free to play is without challenges of its own). At least it worked out for this dev as he kept his costs low. Hopefully, the game has a long tail.

I mean, success is relative. It may not have made millions like Monument Valley or made the kind of money a F2P game would have made, but the dev was able to make a profit and plan ahead for a next game. That's more than some devs ever achieved; look at HopeThisWorks, devs of Polara. Another game that earned wonderful reviews but was an absolute financial failure to the point that the devs were forced to close down.

I had also talked with the devs of Dark Echo a few weeks ago. The game was a success for them as well. Sold well enough that they're already working on a new game with a bigger scope, and are moving forward with bringing the game to PC.

This is an awesome news.
I was a bit worried when I saw it going free...I'm in the last 10 levels (light world) and still immensely enjoying it.

Not yet, I'm waiting for more impressions. I have the feeling that it won't be too long, as I've only seen discussion about one specific case.
Same reason I looking for impressions :p

The Room gameplay style looks like it really lends itself to crime investigation. I'm happy to see more games inspired by The Room, suits touchscreen nicely

I'm particularly excited about Machinika Musuem. Imagine all the possibilities of future tech. The puzzle in that video revolves around a 3D printer

I do not like it at all. For me, the controls are a bit cluncky and... meh, I think I do not like the overall design. Magic Touch and Platform Panic appealed more to me.

Added Silly Sausage In Meat Land, TouchTone, Mr. Jump, and The Trace to the OP
If anyone has impressions of The Trace, that would be appreciated

Really enjoying Qvadriga anyone played this?

Love how deep the game is as well as being able to force people into crashing over wrecked chariots lol

Anyone else played any of the other slitherine games? I really enjoy tactical games such as Qvadriga but there seems to not be a lot of press around these games.

10000000 is getting a sequel: "You Must Build A Boat"

Hands-on preview courtesy of TouchArcade
Anyway, the basis of the game, as the title hints, is building your boat. You initially start with a tiny little canoe looking thing, then quickly upgrade to what resembles a real ship

And it doesn't take long until you've got a real-deal battle-yacht complete with gym, blacksmith, and more. In essence, your ship that you're building serves the purpose of 10000000's castle, and is home to the various NPC's you interact with for buffs, bonuses, and weapon damage increases.

Double dipped anyway, figured I'd at the very least enjoy another runthrough and some comfy couch gaming from it. Thanks.

Loving Silly Sausage. Probably the only thing I'll get this week. A little annoyed that paying to remove ads doesn't remove the video ad option at checkpoints but I guess there has to be some other option if you don't have enough gems. Problem is that I've found that even if you get every gem, there will be points where the cost of the checkpoint exceeds what you have. I suppose I probably should be trying to get further without using a checkpoint.

Still, really nice twist on the snake genre.
