iOS Gaming May 2016 | April jests bring Titan Quests

'Soon' (Obsidian via Twitter).

It's even more infuriating knowing that Android doesn't have the 'block' so you can install it on phones.
It's just the tablet version miniaturized, not ideal, but if you know the cards you can play.

I'm told they are tweaking the UI to be more phone friendly.
I can't wait...I need the iPhone version to play at work and when the iPad recharges :p

Wow I never knew that about android, that's neat. Wonder what Obsidians idea of 'soon' is.

Oh and I meant to say on my 6S+ so I really do have extra room! But yeah having it tweaked is probably a good thing. Well, all in good time.

This is the trailer of Perchang'...Perchang (dev name and game are the same :) )

I'm actually testing the game and it's really damn good...easy to learn, hard to master and with a great 'just one more try' factor.

Graphics, physics and the various elements (gradually introduced) are all top notch.
Very polished already too (game seems not that far away).
I bet puzzle games fan will want to look into this one.

You sure that's the name? Last I wrote about it, the devs were undecided on a title

And it's from the co-founder of Rodeo games

I got 10 games installed on my iPad Pro for my 15 hour long flight:

- Don't Starve
- Hexcells
- Minecraft
- Papers, Please
- Crossy Road
- Limbo
- Downwell
- Card Crawl
- Rollercoaster Tycoon 3
- Love You to Bits

- now I can't remember the other four, it's currently charging. And the poor internet here won't let me download anymore.
Get some interactive fiction in there, those always made flights fun for me.

I can't. The Internet connection is piss poor here. I am trying to download Sorcery though.

You're in the Philippines right? Try to get a Smart BRO sim for 50 pesos and load it with some credit. Depending on where you are you'll get LTE speeds good enough for downloading. I get stuff from the Google Play Store for my Android phone and it takes 15 to 30 mins to download a 1GB game using Smart. Globe can be much slower. It depends on the area.

It's alright. I'm waiting to board in here at the airport now, and got some great wifi. I'm currently looking for some PC like games. Looking at Door Kickers and Her Story. Did get to download KOTOR, The Room 3, Ace Attorney 5 and Pathfinder.

Making the switch back to iOS today. 64 gig 6S Plus will be mine! I have a HUGE backlog of games to hunt down and play.

Is anyone else having an issue with AppShopper? I've been using it to keep tabs on games for a long time now, but as of yesterday it can't seem to load the Stream tab to see what games have price drops.

Is there another app out there similar that people use?

I was coming here to ask the same question. Having the same issue.

I use a German equivalent, which I supposed to be available in English as well. One big advantage is the possibility to watch the whole library of developers and also watch IAPs. It still gets updates after some years of a hiatus since he found a way to smuggle those updates along Apple's certification process.

The TA app does the job as well, though the watchlist is a bit unstructured. Advantage is, you can directly add Apps to the Watch list which are linked to news, so every Thursday you can really quick add those games to your list.

I use and prefer AppZapp. Always seemed to be faster at getting price changes with the same features like setting alarms and email notifications for certain apps, etc.

Thank you for the tip. This is a great alternative.

As a side note... it appears that AppShopper is back. I don't know what caused the issue, but it's loading just fine again. False alarm, I guess.

Looks good! Gonna give it a shot.

Been preoccupied with Uncharted 4. Did you get it Frost?

Is quite good.

No, I didnt get it. Was too busy playing Overwatch (with a full friend team is flawless) and with that and Mirrors Edge in a month plus No Mans Sky shortly after and Diablo 3 right now... to me is the least interesting title so I skipped it... how is it?

It's great if you like either previous Uncharted games (or Tomb Raider if you haven't). Not sure if it's quite the 10/10 some sites have given it but definitely a must have if you are a fan of the genre.

Back to iOS, what is PG's fascination with Slither.io? I know it's high on the free charts but they've seriously have had six articles in two weeks on it (plus a seventh that used it for comparison's sake). I've played it and it's slow, laggy and just not all that fun.

Has anyone picked up Caterziller yet? Any imps?

Anyone have any suggestions for a classic platformer? Something along the lines of Mario or something?

Ever play Pizza Boy? It's an oldie but one of my favorite classic, Mario-seque platformers.

If you want a newer, more modern take but still has a classic feel, Super Phantom Cat is also great.

I loved Pizza Boy. I'll probably download and play through it again because of you! I'll look into Super Phantom Cat, too.

Leap Day is really good. The one-touch platforming feels just right, varied enemies and hazards, the perfect distances between checkpoints, no limited lives or anything like that, and the levels are surprisingly lengthy.

And a gameplay incentive that will actually make me play daily, that's not the usual "daily reward" variety

Good you already had Pizza Boy. Checked and it's gone from the App Store again (but available brought purchase history). It's strange because I thought I remember it getting a surprise update giving it widescreen support, etc.

Must have been thinking of another game. Still a classic.

Edit: Figured it out. It was Miss Claire Garden that had been updated with widescreen support. Highly recommend that one as well in the classic platformer department. Lots of content and pretty challenging too. (And still on the App Store!)

Just deleted Leap Day. Platforming felt just a bit too imprecise for me, getting caught on tiny edges and things like that. And not a fan at all of the watching videos to unlock checkpoints model - I don't think you get enough fruit to unlock every checkpoint, and the platforming wasn't fun enough to me to make the repetition of sections - if I didn't unlock that checkpoint - anything other than tedious.

If anything it makes me dislike the F2P model even more because I now wonder if they would have filled each section with enough fruit to unlock checkpoints that way if the game weren't F2P.

Personally, Nitrome's free to play stuff has been hit and miss, with more in the latter camp. Their paid stuff like Gunbrick and Icebreaker have been fantastic though.

Game has a $3.99 premium unlock. No ads, all checkpoints unlocked

One more week till Titan Quest. Assume it has NG+ as that's the main appeal of the game...

Are there any offline Diablo-like games anymore? I can still download Dungeon Hunter 1 and Orc Vengeance (although I've heard the later doesn't work anymore), but I'd love something else.

I also re-downloaded all of The Quest. Man, that game is SO good. I'm shocked more people don't know about it.

The date is confirmed? I hadn't read that.

Can't wait!

Seems to be set for the 19th yes.

Well, TQ will be offline.

The Quest is amazingly deep but I don't like the fragmented app purchases needed to get it all, just one app with all the xpacs for a premium and I would be all over that.

TQ will be had, that's for sure. Just love the genre and wouldn't mind other options.

The Quest IS a bit convoluted, I agree. I've bought everything and have them enabled through Gold, but for someone new to the series, it can be a mess.

So I apologize for this question, but I've been away from iOS gaming for a few years...

Battleheart Legacy and Wayward Souls. I'm reading good things about both. I'm trying to get a few various genres of games on my iPhone before the 8 hour plan ride I have next week. Would you guys recommend one of these two over the other?

Battleheart is an RPG. Building your character, quests, side-missions, loot and equipment, etc. Wayward Souls is an an action roguelike, permadeath, randomly generated levels, evasive hack-n-slash combat

They're both excellent, but I think Battleheart offers more mileage

And no need to apologize. We discuss all mobile games here, new or old.

My thoughts exactly.

This reminds me, I never actually beat Battleheart. I should get on that once Pathfinder gets its hooks out of me.

Thanks. I'll probably grab Battleheart Legacy for the trip and grab Wayward Souls after I finish Titan Quest.

So my Hawaiian flight games list is about ready I think:

  • Pizza Boy
  • Battleheart Legacy
  • Galaxy on Fire HD 2
  • Warhammer Quest
  • The Quest Gold
  • Miss Claire Garden
  • Crossy Road
All can be played offline, and that's what I need. Titan Quest will be bought while on vacation for the flight home!

Are there any "good" controllers for iOS? I tried a few out on Android, but they all had a hair too much latency to be usable for my taste.

I use a SteelSeries Nimbus. I haven't noticed any latency issues and the battery life is really good.

After having installed a bunch of games on my new iPad Pro, I actually didn't really play anything on my 15 hour flight trip. I have a hard time doing anything while flying apparently.

Leap Day is very entertaining and I really like the levels offered each day. I also like the achievements, collect all fruit for 10 days and gold medal in the same days trophies, you will be mine. The level variety is great and gives all kinds of challenges, controls are perfect, only can blame yourself for a missed tap and for not seeing through the mace in time. There are a ton of ads but there is an option to turn it paid and premium. Well done, maybe their best game since Gunbrick.

Just deleted Leap Day. Platforming felt just a bit too imprecise for me, getting caught on tiny edges and things like that. If Leap Day gives enough fruit in each section to afford the checkpoint it would become too easy. There are also videos to pay for it. Or a premium unlock.

Personally, Nitrome's free to play stuff has been hit and miss, with more in the latter camp. Their paid stuff like Gunbrick and Icebreaker have been fantastic though.

Nitrome has an option to make the app premium in most of their games, removing ads and in this one unlocks all checkpoints?

Didnt like the first one, the second one was a blast but just because I completed the whole game by fist, punching all enemies and running smartly from cover to cover to engage with maximum health. Only because of that... and the amazing moving train level. Didnt like the third either.

So my Hawaiian flight games list is about ready I think:

  • Pizza Boy
  • Battleheart Legacy
  • Galaxy on Fire HD 2
  • Warhammer Quest
  • The Quest Gold
  • Miss Claire Garden
  • Crossy Road
.

80 Days would be a fantastic addition to that Hawaiian flight... a highly re-playable exploration, decision making, some sort of write your own adventure through multiple paths type of game that takes a while to discover its hundreds of different brilliantly written routes to conker that challenge. Multiple paths to discover, tons of stories to unfold, some adrenaline pumping decisions to take,... and on top of that, add to that a little sim management and some text adventure all wrapped nicely with some of the best writing a storybook game has ever seen (we all know the book behind it) with a coat of polish and a ton of bright ideas and you have one of the very best AppStore games. You need it for your trip.

Welcome back :)

Get Pathfinder once it's Universal

I see everyone already gave you excellent advices...which reminds me how mature and cool iOS is now as a gaming platform, especially in certain genres.

I would add to those lists some sci-fi awesomeness....so I would get

Out There
Galactic Keep

:)

You have to play for the rest of the year already!!!
Saw you got Warhammer Quest....be sure to play in hard core mode, the only way :)

Oh fair enough, didn't realise that would unlock all checkpoints, thought it'd just get rid of the ads!

I appreciate that they do, I just find the paid games much more substantial and interesting than the "free" ones. Those feel a lot shallower and more throwaway, which I guess is the outcome of designing quick, arcade style, one-touch action games.

But the ones that have really stuck with me are Gunbrick and Icebreaker, which were really excellent games regardless of platform. The others feel only worth my time when I have a few minutes to kill waiting in a queue or something.

If Leap Day gives enough fruit in each section to afford the checkpoint it would become too easy.

I don't think that's necessarily true, especially if the fruit is positioned so that it takes more skill and is harder to collect. Anyway, I think the difficulty should come from the new platforming sections I've yet to master, rather than repeating the same sections I've already beaten.

I thought Beneath The Lighthouse and Silly Sausage were fun polished puzzlers. Nothing else has topped Icebreaker IMO, but then again that's one hell of a bar to clear.

You know what, I haven't tried Beneath The Lighthouse. Should give that a whirl.

Yeah Icebreaker is fantastic. Particularly gratifying for me seeing how wel-realised the final product was, considering I stumbled across the flash version years and years ago and took a liking to it immediately.
