Man that Cursed Treasure 2 TD game is pretty hard, at least in getting a perfect score on a level.

Tons of fun though, it really doesn't do anything new yet for the genre but what it does, it does good. And I'm a sucker for good TD games on my phone.

Show me how you buy an F2P game ;)

Not all f2p games sports unfair IAP with a bad user experience (examples of good F2P games: Whale Trail, Super Monsters Ate My Condo, Dead Ahead, Quadropus Rampage,...(THANKS BRONXSTA!!!!)) trying to milk you out, and for those, that are fair with the user, I like to buy something back for the developer, after all, they also work to eat and do things, and having some programming skills on my back I can say it is not as fun of a job as it seems... so, maybe I can't "buy" the game, but when I buy something get a feeling that I own it more, opposed to not buying anything and dont really caring. I dont know how to explain this, but I feel I own them in some way.

New Pathpix game came out last week http://appshopper.com/games/pathpix-boo

This is probably the most exciting thing that happen last week for me. The Pathpix games have been a mainstay on my iPod since I first got it. Worth noting, 'Pathpix' and 'Pathpix Pro' have also both been recently updated to include 20 new mega huge puzzles each. The new puzzles on Pro are about double the size of the previous largest ones and my device gets a little framey during the transition from full view to close up view. Very exciting, should keep me entertained for a few weeks at least.

Me, mostly by paying the IAP to remove ads (only if I can restore it).

Don't think there is an explicit Remove Ads IAP, though I think all our more recent AS stuff has had ads disable on any purchase (will need to check).

Only has light ad integration anyway, just static interstitials, no banners.

I never seen a single ad in SMAMC yet... and I haven't bought anything yet (doubler looks like the thing to get and its permanent)(awaiting my 6 to see if all my apps scale). One thing I have to give to PikPok is that you dont seem like a cheap company full of ads, power-hungry for money and you actually care for the user experience. I initially ranted being wrong and I apologize now for it.

Well, SMAMC was produced before AS had the ok from Turner legal to have ads, so that's why it doesn't have any. Robot Unicorn Attack 2, Giant Boulder of Death, and now Adventure Xpress which we have developed since do have them.

We definitely care a lot about the user experience and delivering quality, though I'll admit we do have some games that some people would consider stuffed full of ads. It can sometimes be hard to balance the user experience with the commercial reality though, as we are a business at the end of the day. Usually we try to err on the side of being generous, though sometimes we might get something wrong out of the gate.

In any case, glad you are enjoying SMAMC. Hope you like Adventure Xpress also.

About damn time, Ubisoft!
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Assassin's+Creed+-+Identity/news.asp?c=61774
There's a new Assassin's Creed game coming to iOS and it's not a card battler, tabletop game, pirate ship spin-off, side-scrolling action game, or a multiplayer arena battler.

It's actually a proper, bonafide Assassin's Creed game. With an open world, social stealth, assassinations, hiding in haystacks, sword fights with guards, and smoke bombs

It's currently soft launched, here's the NZ store link:

Will post some impressions later

How the hell do you finally make a "proper" Assassin's Creed game for iOS and then make it free to play. I've lost all faith in giant companies to do the right thing. Wait timers in an Assassin's Creed game. WTF? I know I haven't played it but if ANY game could have done well as a pure premium game it could have been Assassin's Creed on brand recognition alone.

I may give it a try but serious disappointed in Ubisoft on that decision.

Bronxsta, if you check it out, can you let us know how big it is? Not going to download some gig+ game if it's ruined by F2P mechanics.

If it's as close to console gameplay as they make it sound, I'm sure it could have sold for $10+. And still have done well.

EDIT: Curiosity got the best of me and I downloaded it. Only 211 MB installed. Won't be able to try it until later. But I'll dive in with low expectations.

Only 200mb? It's 750mb installed on my device

Saying this is "open world" is a misrepresentation IMO. Missions are in open mini-hub areas, but this definitely is not an open world game like a proper Assassins Creed

Currently playing through Limbo, and its fantastic. A pretty good port, even able to get the touch controls down. Any other platformers worth checking out?

Penumbear, Incoboto, 14px, Commander Pixman, Mutant Mudds, Stealth Inc, VVVVVV, Kelly, Kero Blaster, Dokuro, They Need To Be Fed 3

I was unaware of the additional download after opening. Should have figured that was too small.

Still not expecting much and already read about poor camera and controls.....along with timers.

I'll make my own judgement but again, why do companies chose to ruin franchises with half-assed efforts? At least, the Sack Boy game is a quality original game set in the LBP universe.

Yeah, I played two missions and already deleted. Never even got to the timers. The controls are horribly inaccurate and the camera is incredibly frustrating. Considering how good Xcom, Bioshock, and Gameloft's open world games look, there's no reason for the visuals to be so subpar

In theory, it's great to have AC in a somewhat familiar form on IOS. In reality, it's garbage and I'm sad for the gamers whose first experience with Assassins Creed will be this game

That's what sad to me is that games like Xcom, Bioshock (even if not optimal) and even Deus Ex, show what iOS gaming is capable of. And yet some companies still fail to deliver and end up killing the franchises.

Like I said, a proper AC game could easily get $10-$20 or more on iOS. But then we get crap like this.

On another note, just read that Vain Glory has soft launched in PH. Guess I may need to figure out how to make an account there...

'Crap' that sells a lot more over time than a $10-20 game upfront.

Unfortunately

But on the flip side, there are a lot of great F2P games. Quadblast, Sky Force, Only One, to name a few

Yeah, not saying all F2P games are bad. But whatever model this AC game had used, it's still not giving iOS the attention it deserves. Even with a smaller "world", an AC game is doable on iOS as more and more console-like games have proved.

Mind you I haven't tested this AC outing but usually with these mobile iterations they're
1) not aimed at the core audience of the franchise, it's meant for people who don't already play these games
2) made as to introduce a player to a brand so they check out mainline titles
3) made by small teams
4) small cost, big returns

I understand that and clearly that was the way iOS gaming has been perceived in the past. Games for major franchises almost always were little spin-off games or companion apps.

The problem is that iOS gaming has matured to the point where we are getting ports of full PC and console games. So this type of thing isn't going to continue to get a free pass.

For every game that we get that reinforces iOS as a serious contender for gaming, games like this take it two steps back again.

Yes, for the mass casual gamer, I suppose it won't matter. But for hardcore gamers, it's just disappointing knowing what the platform is capable of.

Just my 2 cents.

I have to agree with Awp. I can play Bastion, Limbo, Bioshock, XCom, KOTOR, GTA San Andreas, Goat Simulator, Chronology, Crimsonland, soon The Banner Saga on my iDevice

That's incredible. A few years ago, I never would have imagined I could have those kinds of games on an IOS device.

Bioshock, in my pocket. Amazing

IOS gaming had come a long way and IMO had proved itself as a viable platform for the kinds of experiences once reserved for console and PC.

So seeing a visually subpar, F2P-ified Assassins Creed with such poor controls on a device where games like Bioshock and KOTOR prove that you don't have to dumb down a mobile game to make it fit on IOS...

Not *any* purchase, but after a user spends over $5 on IAP the ads are turned off. Note that doesn't include announcement pop-ups or cross-promotions which are often mistaken by users as an "ad" - which is why we don't say specifically what the threshold is (or that there is one) in-game, and just in case something goes wrong.

There is no Remove Ads IAP in this game, and I don't imagine we'll add it to future ones. We gave it a try in Castle Doombad Free to Slay earlier this summer. It accounted for a very, very low % of purchases. So instead, we use the $5 threshold so that if you like a game enough to pay some money into it, the ads stop.

Guess I had figured Vainglory would be compatible for 5S since it supports Metal. But now I guess it will be iPhone 6/6 Plus and iPad 2 and up only?

Oh well.

Yes the game is generous. I like the fact that coins are given as a result of how well you perform, and then there are coin condos and the wheel which is very generous.

In any case, glad you are enjoying SMAMC. Hope you like Adventure Xpress also.

I really hope so, been looking for a new match game. Tomorrow at 11am I will snap it from the NZ appstore :)

And to add something to the topic between awp, More and Tune. I started on iOS on 2010 and at that time there were Tilt to Live and Canabalt, it was impossible to think that games like Bastion would be playable, and then the 4S came in and it arrived. In only one generation. And since then we have been getting more and more ports and original creations that evolved iOS gaming forward. Soon, with Metal, we will get the same experience as those "only" on consoles. If not better considering how fast mobile phones (now more like pocket computers) are evolving... being more... mature than before.

Guess I had figured Vainglory would be compatible for 5S since it supports Metal. But now I guess it will be iPhone 6/6 Plus and iPad 2 and up only?

Oh well.

It runs on
Pad Air, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad with Retina Display, iPad 2 (30+fps)
So its expected to run at least on an iPhone 5. Only the soft launch version is iPad only.

really? thought it would support the 5 and up

So did I. Apparently it was originally for iPad only for screen interface reasons but I think Apple may have pressured them into making it work on iPhone 6 and 6S. Supposedly they may work to make it compatible with more devices.

I'm actually surprised that the iPad 2 is supported. It doesn't support iOS 8 and Metal, does it?

Maybe they'll be downgrades for non-Metal devices as well.

I too am amazed by the rapid progress seen on iOS. XCOM on the iPad Air still blows my mind.

Unfortunately, I think the rate of mobile chips progress is slowing down. This is the first year where we did not see a doubling of CPU performance in the new Apple chip. It was a 25% increase.

I think it will continue to get better. You've got K1 chips on a few tablets now that doubled the performance of the A7. Unfortunately, Android devs aren't taking advantage of the power though.

I read the AnandTech review and they said that more than making a new chip, they perfected the previous version making it more efficient and better in every way. But yes, compared to every other iPhone itineration that doubled the previous ones, this one is not so hot in that department.

The first result of this graphic improvement is Vainglory, which should work on a 5S since metal runs on it -and previous models by lowering quality, if not Apple is pushing towards the 6 a bit too much- and it looks impressive. Looks like Diablo 3 but for a mobile. Incredible. And its online too.

I'm actually surprised that the iPad 2 is supported. It doesn't support iOS 8 and Metal, does it?

No, iPad 2 or iPhone 5/c and previous dont support metal. I am not even sure the iPad 3 and mini supports Metal as well. iPad Air should do.

I'm revisiting a few iOS RPGs and now I'm playing The Shadow Sun. I don't remember if this game was talked about back when it was released, but it's pretty good. Totally feels like a Bioware RPG like KOTOR or Dragon Age. Similar mechanics, multiple ways to solve quests and an interesting story and lore. Visually it looks like a PC RPG from the 90s but I'm enjoying it a lot.

Still better than Beach Buggy Racing

Who had the smart idea of putting unskipabble video ads after you complete a race?

I was unaware of the additional download after opening. Should have figured that was too small.

So 500+mb of in-game downloads?

DRM...isn't it just lovely, especially with big downloads on devices which people could be using mobile data to do it?

In theory, it's great to have AC in a somewhat familiar form on IOS. In reality, it's garbage and I'm sad for the gamers whose first experience with Assassins Creed will be this game

Well, this weekend I tried out a demo for one of the new AC games for this year, and I know that I had difficulty doing that from face value. I think I'll probably end up sticking away from this one

Guess I had figured Vainglory would be compatible for 5S since it supports Metal. But now I guess it will be iPhone 6/6 Plus and iPad 2 and up only?

Oh well.

Vainglory supports iPad 2's?

Are you sure you didn't mistype anything, or...?

Shockingly, no, that wasn't a misprint. I'm thinking that even though it was showcases for Metal and iPhone 6, that it was in development before Metal was available to devs.

The game sounds like it was originally supposed to only be for iPads, but think Apple gave them incentive to do the 6/6+.

Really hope they bring it to the 5S. Power shouldn't be an issue and they may use screen size as a reason not to but it's not like a 6 is giant in comparison.

Anyway, the latest post on their blog mentions the iPad 2.

Not to distract from this thread, but I made a thread about Galaxy Trucker. Basically I think it's the best iOS board-game ever, by far.

If I'm not mistaken this was made by ex-Bioware devs

I've been hopelessly addicted to Cursed Treasure 2 the past couple days. Finished all the levels, and then went back to 3 star them. Only 3 levels left. I haven't done night mode yet, though.

Same here, it's really good!

I'm only at level 6 now though.

Oh, is Galaxy Trucker iPad only? That's a shame. I was looking for some games to fill my new iPhone 6, going from 16gb to 64 has opened up a whole world of downloading a bunch of stuff to me, ha.
