iOS Gaming September 2015 | GOing back to school with a backlog

I better get to work on the October thread :p
A lot of promising stuff happening next month

I believe that Guitar Hero Live should also be coming to iOS on October.
You'll be able to play the exact same game that you can buy on console and plug your guitar via bluetooth or you can strum with the touchscreen.

If they don't screw it up, airplay should be supported.

I wonder what type of pricing they'll choose. (Although I'm guessing minimum fee plus a lot of the songs being available via DLC will be the chosen pricing structure.)

Tengami is apparently very short so it shouldn't be hard to finish it. And I've heard the same thing gameplay wise but I still need to pick it up.

I have very fond memories of Tengami.
It's short and very poetic..if you liked Lunar Flowers you will like it a lot.
Takes longer than Lunar Flowers and has a super cool cardboard look that it's tied to the gameplay.
Some puzzles weren't THAT straightforward too (but if I recall well...it's a 2-3 hour thing).

No brainer for 1 dollar, assuming you actually have time to play it.

Thanks guys. What the hell, another game to pile on the backlog heap.

^^^ For me, the best games released in September where:

- Super Happy Fun Block. Brilliant puzzle platformer that keeps on surprising me with the quality of the level design. Probably the best puzzle platforming with a color changing mechanic...

- HoPiKo. Best "cannon blaster" (what I call the DKC genre it created on those mini games) game there is.

And Shooty Skies is pretty great but it needs relative touch urgently....

October releases:
  • Super Sharp - October 8th
  • Chesh - October 8th
  • Leave Me Alone - October 8th
  • Salt & Pepper 2 - October 13th
  • Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 1 - October 15th
  • Ghosts of Memories - October 16th
  • Murder - October 21st
  • Sanitarium - October 29th
  • Guitar Hero Live
  • Out There: Multiverse update
  • Zodiac: Orcanon Odyssey
  • Octodad: Dadliest Catch
  • Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5
  • Game of Thrones Episode 6
  • Baseball Apocalypse
  • Prison Architect - likely
  • The Room 3 - maybe, late October/early November

I guess new thread would be 'Apple Gaming October 2015' as technically the Apple TV doesn't run ios.

Between 20 and 28 games in the October OT. Some I deciding whether to include.

I'm already anticipating the pain of reading the first page of the thread with safari on ipad bumping up and down while my crappy internet loads the images :)

Keep up the good work!!!

Just hide images in the GAF settings. That's what I do. Images and GIFs hidden. It's a must for browsing the image-heavy Rain World, Kickstarter, and Indie Games threads

Shooty Skies is a pretty fun little casual shmup-like game. My only wish is that it had relative touch controls.

I know it was rumored by some time now but you may want to know I got direct confirmation from the devs that Darkest Dungeon is coming to iPad next year.

Picked up Out There finally. I am curious already but I guess I won't have time in the coming days since I am moving to another city.

Any other special sale recommendations? Would like to play Sorcery, but only the third part is on sale, right?

Depends on what you like.

Legends of Grimlock is an outstanding, challenging dungeon crawler. A more modern take on games like Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master.

Horizon Chase is an Outrun style racer that is second to none on iOS in bringing an old school racer with modern sensibilities.

Danmuku Unlimited 2 is one of the best shmup on the platform.

Really can't go wrong with anything in the sale.

Also, two more titles added to the sale: To-Fo Fury and Tales from Deep Space.

In case you wonder last iOS 9 update doesn't fix the Gamecenter bug, AT ALL.

I'm super pissed...I can't even DELETE apps with Gamecenter (system freezes when it asks if I want to remove data from GC too).
Can't load saves, can't sync, can't post scores....

15 pages already in the Apple forums.

That sucks. I haven't had any issues since I got my number of GC friends under 200 but know a lot of people have way more than that.

Does the story of sorcery 3 follow on from 1 and 2? I got three since its on sale but I don't want to start it if it will spoil the previous two?

Yes. While it's a great game by itself, for the fullest experience, you want to start from 1. Your choices and equipment and knowledge carry over between games and can have vastly different effects on your story

picked up my first iOS device like 2 weeks ago (always been an android guy).

nice to see some quality iOS games on sale like LoG and Superbrothers, both never played. i have such a long list of games to buy, but all of them have been on sale before so hard to buy at full price. seems sales happen pretty regularly so that's great.

I have all three and have only finished the first one. Barely scratched the surface of the second one.

Oh, the trouble with too many games...

Cut down the OT games a bit, so it's back to three posts next month :p

Think I might go with "Just when you thought your TV was safe from mobile games" for the thread title

Any impressions of Mos Speedrun, No More Kings, or Dim Light?

So Shooty Skies (Free) is good. Really, really good.

It's from the Crossy Road guys, but they're oddly going under the new name Mighty Games.

It's an endless shooter that looks and feels great. Tight controls. It's got this kinetic vibe that super satisfying. Reminds me a bit of Monsters Ate My Condo in this regard.

Thumbs Way Up.

My impressions on Moss Speedrun 2 are mixed right now... dont realy like the new style of graphics and prefered the older bite sized levels more. But in the positive side I like the tight controls and the old school gameplay. Need to play more, more impressions coming soon...

Hocus is... different from what I thought... you dont rotate the levels, you have to find the right path to arrive to the end as is it was a maze Escher style. Controls by swipe, and there is an indicator on top of the screen for the directions you can take. So far... interesting minimalist escher based game.

I don't like the new music. That's my main complaint so far. At least it returns in prestige mode. :)

Also, only 79 people on the leaderboards. GC bug affecting that many or the game hasn't sold at all.

That will have its own OT, I'm sure.

I mean, I expect there to be a lot of ongoing discussion about it and its games in these threads. But there will be a focused (and troll laden) thread for it i Gaming proper.

Shooty skies is a lot of fun. Good controls with some great action. I like how, just like Crossy road, it's very casual and you can progress through the levels and get upgrades without much hassle. Great for pick up and play game.

Only concern I've noticed is that some of the enemies bullets don't seem to affect me and instead just go right through me. Throws me off sometimes.

9.1 Beta 3 arrived earlier this week and after testing it for a while I can report that GameCenter now works as it always worked: great but not perfect. Its a public beta and it works really good, every app remains the same after upgrading, safe, even more coming from iOS9,....

79 is way too low, but the market has indeed changed a lot since then, like with Spider 2. Now the fever is games like Crossy Road, Land Sliders and Shooty Skies... free but fair games that are accessible, good for a quick go, and with lots of characters to unlock.

--------------------

(I wonder if Mario and PikPok are going to follow this way and do a new Monsters Ate My Condo with lots of 99c characters with their cosmetic changes, videos for coins,...)

I legit like this way of thinking. If it's well-designed and the game doesn't fundamentally change between paying and non-paying people, I'm okay with that. Strange that it seems all the games with well-designed IAP are coming from Australia. Crossy Road, Shooty Skies (admittedly both from the same studio), Land Sliders, pretty much everything Halfbrick... all doing a great job. With the money Crossy Road is known to have made, I'd be surprised if we don't see a downturn in the Candy Crush/Game of War-style of pay-to-win or wait-to-win.

They definitely do, but I like to support the devs so ill pick up full price if I'm interested enough.

That said, Horzon Chase is on sale so definitely get that. :)

How are you liking the switch? Which device did you get?

I hope the whole free to play market swifts to this Australian way of thinking about fair IAP you mention, they make a lot of money, users are pretty happy with the fairness on them, its not pay-to-win (Shooty Skies only lets you revive once and its inexpensive), it doesnt sell fake coins for real money (really like this), the games are fun to play,... its a win-win situation for both users and developers.

I wish for every game to be premium without IAP, but that is impossible these days, maybe they will return like when it was golden era... some day (fingers crossed), but while I wait, in the meantime, this Aussie fair free games mentality are perfectly okay with me.

Important to note that I'm not claiming this method of IAP as purely Australian, just that I've noticed it with the three different groups of developers now... Hipster Whale/Shooty Skies guys, Halfbrick and Prettygreat.

Provide a good product and people will be happy to pay (just bought cat enthusiast in Land Sliders myself, and bought a few characters in Crossy). If there's a balance between these and premium titles in the app store, I'll be content.

The thing is, Crossy Road, Land Sliders, and Shooty Skies (and most Halfbrick games) are essentially single player experiences/games. There isn't actually much of an opportunity to "pay to win". Its easy to set up an experience where players can choose to grind or pay for any content/features over time, and easier to have the game balanced between payers and non payers.

When you have much more direct PVP situations like Game of War is where there is opportunity for more exploitable IAP and where it is harder to balance the game between payers and non payers. There are still PVP games with well designed IAP and player experiences though (I've played Clash of Clans for 2.5 years without paying).

Candy Crush Saga probably would have been a very different thing had incentivised video been a thing at the time too. But even then I didn't find it too bad for the couple of hundred levels I played (I never paid in that either).

And, it isn't that strange that "all the games with well-designed IAP are coming from Australia" given the games you reference. Matt Hall is behind Crossy Road and Shooty Skies, and an investor in PrettyGreat who made Land Sliders. And Luke Muscat, the lead designer in PrettyGreat was formerly the lead designer in Halfbrick. So, you have a couple of guys driving the design of a wide portfolio of titles from the region.

I'd also contend there are games with "well-designed" IAP coming out from all over the world. There are titles trying different things all the time from a range of developers and publishers. You just have to find them :)

Any more impressions? Seems kind of simple. Is it challenging? Are new elements introduced?

Thinking I'm just sticking with Shooty Skies as my only pickup today. I've got enough on my plate and nothing is truly screaming must buy for me at least.
