There are already games that push those devices to their limits though. I forget, isn't Theatrhythm already barely supported on the 4S? I know on some of the platforms it runs on it turns off a lot of onscreen graphics just to maintain a playable framerate.

And after having used my iPad 3rd gen there's simply no way I can go back to the non-retina screen. It's a night and day difference, especially when you spend as much time reading as I do.

Yup, in iPhone 4 you always get this static ugly red background no matter the song. And despite that it doesn't run very well.

While we're on the subject, can anyone comment on Sim City Deluxe and The Sims 3 on iOS?

Both seem like they'd be great to have on my phone, but I can only imagine there's some catch.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simcity-deluxe/id380017992?mt=8
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-sims-3/id317904170?mt=8

EDIT - Read some Sims 3 user review and it sounds terrible. No families, no customizing houses, etc etc and EA has long abandoned it.

SimCity Deluxe is kind of hit and miss. It is a decent game, controls well, good graphics and feel kind of like SimCity 3. There are a few problems though that are annoying. There is a bug that will perpetually annoy you about your water supply despite it being fine, public transport never seems to work and I always got the feeling that outside deals like casinos and federal prisons contributed too much to the budget even in a city of 1M. The number of required schools and hospitals seems rather large too which makes you city look stupid.

For $1 it is worth it and there are scenarios some of which are decent, some are easy and some are stupid.

Rumour has it there will be a new SimCity iOS game launching some time after the new PC game.

Can't speak of the Deluxe edition but the original iOS SimCity was great fun back in 2009.

I was going through my phone looking for something to delete and stumbled across 10,000,000. Thought I'd give it a blast since I haven't touched it since I bought it. Huh, it's pretty good. I can see why people were digging it now.

I do agree with that, I use my 3rd gen 90% for streaming video and browsing, however if I did not have one up to now the mini would have worked better for me.

Retina screens are beautiful but with word of the 5th gen ipad being slimmer i'd go with a mini for the rest of this year IMO, saves you about £140 too.

But then I also say this while I own an iphone 5, when I bought my ipad last year I wanted a device with as much power as possible so my feelings are going to be tipped now.

It gets sooooo much better as you go along as well, I am now fully upgraded but just chasing the top score, it starts off where each run only lasts a minute or so, now I can go for ages as long as I manage drops.

It wasn't actually a rumour now that I think of it; SimCity is listed in EA's Q2 FY13 (Oct 2012) financial report in the 'upcoming games' section as coming out for both PC and mobile. I'm not sure if any sites other than Pocketgamer picked up on it though and it might end up being a companion app of some sort.

Was there any mention of a new mobile Tiger Woods game? I haven't looked through the reports to see.

Hey guys I need some advice. I've been seriously thinking about buying a tablet recently. Because I've been using an iPhone 4 for the last 2 years (work phone) I'm somewhat invested in the iOS ecosystem and I'm leaning towards an iPad.

Now, because of my needs (mostly just play some games and watch videos) I'm having a tough time justifying a 500$ 4th gen purchase so the Mini seems more reasonable.

For what I can see the two big drawbacks for the Mini compared to 4th gen is the lack or Retina and the older CPU.

For the retina well...sure it would be nice to have it but I think I can live without it. From what I've seen with my limited hands on time of a demo unit the screen still looked good and I don't really want to wait until next fall for the retina mini.

The CPU however is a bigger concern. I know it's 2 generation behind the latest full size ipad but really how "bad" is it? Does it really make a huge difference? Are there games out right now that already show problems with the slower cpu?

Most games are optimized for the A5 so in terms of performance you're fine. However, there are games that just aren't optimized that well for anything and the A6X runs them fine out of brute force. For gaming, I think the form factor for the iPad mini makes it worth it. Small, light, easy to hold in both portait and landscape orientation, easy to hold with one hand, etc. Not all games are Retina-ready either so they still look good on the iPad mini screen but like utter trash on a retina display. Going from a 3rd gen to a Mini made me realize this. But yeah...it's a matter of a $170 difference that you'll have to decide upon. iPad mini is fine now...if you have it for a year and end up wanting to upgrade to a larger iPad the resell value will still be high for these things.

Because we're totally willing to put our iPads on the ground and stomp on them

I'm thinking of a concept of making an iOS Games website in a year (I just have to do my education first) were gaffers are uploading their texts as the websites articles.

Anyway, I have started gaming on my iPhone t instead of iPad mini again but I'll probably get back to the mini again. I just like to change it up a bit sometimes. :)

been wanting to do such a site for a long time now.. but between studies and games... this never seems to get done.. but a collaboration may help! shall we discuss over PM? X)

FIFA was the only other title for mobile listed, but this only covered up to Q4 FY13, which ends March 31st. Tiger Woods' usually release later in the year if I'm not mistaken.

not too sure how RR3 is gonna make millions. And fuck this first tier endurance race is impossible.

And not just that, you freaking need an oil change after like 2 endurance races :/

any tips?

oh... apparently if you keep your iphone on airplane mode keeps the requirements for gold for this event from 7miles down to 5 miles.

This whole time shift mp idea is solid... but it's retarded in practice.

Ya, after reading the impressions I am debating if it is even worth it on my 4S.
Yeah, unless you tweak it like in my previous post, it's not worth it. Gotta wonder whether they checked how playable it was on each device before they released it or not.

works for Gamestop (lol)
I think TA is defending Real Racing 3 because they only played it for like 30 minutes. In which it doesnt look apparent how bad the cooldown system is. It's kinda bad though. Probably not ethical but you can always do the clock trick....

Not exactly sure how RR3 is going to make money, I don't see people putting that much money into it after they see the cooldowns. But then again I don't really understand how those people operate

Any good GBA Advance Wars type games on iOS?

You would think a good one would have been made by now.

I haven't run across any great ones worth your time in my travels... :/

Here's my pitch: An asynchronous Advance Wars game (send out two moves and wait) with a cute art style that's free to play with microtransactions to customize your character.

Boom, send me money Zynga.

With the way Hodapp is defending this whole RR3 debacle I fully expect to see large scale RR3 advertisements on TA once the game launches worldwide. Eli has become quite the douche as of late.

Have you ever heard of whales? They are the people who pay micro transactions to kill timers in freemium games. They constitute .5-1% of the entire playerbase, but they spend so much money on micro transactions it justifies the existence of the game. The entire freemium model is based around these morons, and publishers absolutely rake in the cash from them.

I posted this in another forum, but this is the crux of the matter:

If a studio can make a core game like Real Racing 3 based on these cynical and downright abusive payment models, and the game is more profitable than charging a $10 base fee to every user, every game they make will be like this. Why would they give up the profit?

So, in essence, if this proves successful, studios will be making high-end core games for an audience that is actually 99% smaller than what they originally catered to in the past.

Weird and scary stuff.

Uniwar was pretty good-I'm not sure if it's been updated in the last couple of years but I had a good time with it. Plus it's $0.99

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/uniwar-hd/id311456818?mt=8

I didn't enjoy it as much as the Advance Wars games. The (awful) story in those titles was endearing and kept me going.

Uniwar is more battle isle to me... But is still good.

Also try mecho wars, which is solid and more of a direct rip off.

If we're lucky they'll listen and adjust the shaftedness of the IAPs similarly to what RAD Soldiers did between their soft-launch and world-wide release.

There's a good game underneath this stuff. :(
