I just recently sold my go to comic book reader, my first gen iPad. How is reading comic books on the mini? Is it too small to read comfortably page to page? Is there two finger zooming happening on every page? Would I just be better off spending the extra $100 on an iPad air?

I like the form factor of the mini, but mainly use the iPad for comic reading in bed.

Go full sized air. If you're coming from a first gen iPad, man you are in for a treat.

So I have had my black mini retna for about a week and a half.

Prior to buying it I owned a Dell Venue 8 pro and the new Nexus 7.. so I had all types of mini tablets at my finger tips.

I was never a fan of iOS and really in a way hate the icons on the OS as a way to store and use apps it is what it is.. that part I am still not a fan of... BUT

I now 100% get why the iPad is so damn popular.. the apps are so well designed around the device and exact shape of the tablet that it really sets it apart from the others. While I still overall like my Dell Venue 8 pro the most (hell I have hearthstone running great on it) I grab my ipad mini for every day use... well done apple you got me.

If you're primarily reading in bed then the iPad Air is superior.

:| I returned my iPad mini retina after a week:
  • too wide to comfortably hold across the back one-handed and it fit in just one of the pockets of my coats
  • No adblock with any rss reader

The screen was fine for pdfs though

Hi guys. I'm thinking of getting an iPad mini to my mother for Christmas. The old mini costs $291 whereas the retina costs $401. Is the retina version really worth it? I doubt my mother would even notice it, she barely cares about SD vs HD.

Hard to say. Text is far better on the Retina and it's just far and away the superior product. It comes down to how much difference you think she'll notice.

I went from iPad to iPad mini retina myself. Reading comics on it is better on the mini Retina, imo. It's not my main purpose, at all, but what I've checked so far (Walking Dead, Last of Us) looked incredibly good. Reading comics is easier on the eyes on the new mini than on the OG iPad. You also don't have to zoom in, at all. I had the same concerns regarding this, but they vaporated once I checked a comic on dat screen.

iPad mini is also VERY managable reading sideways in bed, which can't be said for the OG iPad. Overall it's a great, snappy and comfortable reading device.

If your mom has no history of caring about details of font rendering on screens or in print and she doesn’t care about the SD/HD visual difference (like my mom) then she’ll be fine with the old mini (like my mom). I think the retina display makes more of a difference in print than with pictures. If this is to be used for lots of reading - and if your mom cares - it might be worth it

The only other point is speed. old mini feels OK, new mini will be blazing but the speed isn’t really noticeable on light web pages or news readers. it’s more noticeable with demanding apps and games.

iPad Mini uses the same chip as the iPad 2.

Mini with Retina uses the same chip (slightly downclocked) as the iPhone 5S and iPad Air.

Go with the Retina. Don't cheap out and use 3 year old tech.

The problem with pictures is that a lot of sites haven't fully caught up with HD yet so they end up being low resolution half the time.

absolutely true. I was thinking more of pictures from high quality sources but, thinking about it more, those are super rare to find. a few apps will have galleries of high res pics.

but just browsing the web? Most pics will look the same on both devices unless you’re on a specialized photography site.

yeah, for me high res screens really come down to text, icons and app buttons/chrome, lol

It became really apparent when I accidentally enabled Facebook to use posts as my lock screen on my HTC One. Looked amazingly terrible.

Got the 32GB Wifi version as an upgrade from iPad 2 and improved portability is worth it. Only two things to critique at the moment: Safari crashes far more often compared to iPad 2's which I suspect is at least partly due to the newer iOS as well. iPad 2's Safari just slowly slogged through GIF-heavy threads; this version of Safari on the mini Retina just says "nope" and immediately gives up.

The other issue is that when I flick up the bottom dashboard, half the time the OS thinks I'm also trying to highlight something at the same time. Annoying to clear that after hiding the dashboard. Never really had that problem with iPad 2 after updating to the newest iOS.

^^ Chrome seems pretty stable with gif heavy threads. I've never tried GAF with safari tho.

I need to get adjusted to using Chrome, at least for the time being. Safari's become downright unreliable on my retina mini. I'm hesitant to use it for anything remotely important as it is now.

I hope fixing it is a priority for Apple in ios 7.1.

I have the third gen iPad with iOS 7. I use Safari very often, should I expect more problems with the Retina Mini or about the same?

Oh thank god it's not only my iPad air that crashes when using safari!

I've been using iOS 7.1 on a Retina mini and have had very few and far between crashes. I think stability has been a huge focus in 7.1.

I freakin love my Mini 2, except for one goddam annoying thing (which is probably iOS related). I absolutely can't stand how the screen brightness flickers when watching movies through the native video player. I know it's software related since it happens at the same places in various movies. It's like its trying to create a high dynamic contrast ratio by dimming and brightening the screen during bright and dark parts of the movie, but sitting in a dark airplane I can easily notice the adjustment and it's annoying.

Anyone experience this?

Turn off auto brightness. Settings, Wallpapers & Brightness, Auto-Brightness.

Got a Mini for christmas, absolutely loving it - but what is wrong with the cable that came along with it?
It works fine with the iPad, but won't connect or charge my iPhone 5 when plugged into my Mac (charges when plugged "into the wall").

I can easily palm my ipad mini retina when laying down or sitting. So far I am absolutely loving the device.

My journey into the Apple ecosystem is complete. Macbook Pro Retina, iPhone 5, Apple TV and my first iPad.

Only thing that sucks is Safari has crashed twice while using it.

I have the smart case for my ipad and am wondering should I go the extra step and put a screen protector on it?

Also can anyone recommend the best app for comics? (marvel fanboy here)

I liked comixology on my old iPad.

Gah I can't decide which one to get! I was set on getting the mini 2 but my friend got an air and it was pretty light. I am coming from iPad 2 and the portability of the mini seems like a wonderful thing. I can take the device everywhere and not drain my iPhone's battery and one hand reading would probably be better. My only concern is that I really don't go anywhere to warrant the portability...

I'm getting one of these for myself for Christmas mid way through January. I'm wanting to hear more impressions of the cases for it. What are everyone's experiences with your personal cases? What's the best?

I started with one of the Otter Box cases, but I have since been using:

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Folio
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Ultrathin-Keyboard-Folio-iPad/dp/B00EXK1L38/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388195210&sr=8-2&keywords=Logitech+Ultrathin+Keyboard+Folio+ipad+mini

For me it makes it much more useable, the keyboard is just big enough and it protects it very well. The only downside is the the case is fairly thick

This is pretty much the same problem I'm currently having:

When you view iCloud videos not by downloading them to your iPad but instead view them directly and start a stream. This stream is somehow cached in the other files section of my iPad. These files arent deleted even after watching. The only way to clear up this cache file wich is now 9 Gb from my 16 Gb iPad, is to do a full reset, which is offcourse a bit of overkill to do.

Is there no other way to clear the cached videos from the "Other" section. The videos dont appear in iTunes, and dont appears as files anywhere in the settings or video app itselve.

Ive tried downloading a movie to my device but that only too adds up to the total memory.

Hope someone can help

Any ideas? I don't want to have to restore my iPad every time I stream a video....

I have an iPad air and love it. But I'll be honest I miss the Minis size/dimensions. The Airs thin weight really makes it more tolerable but it's still wide to balance with both hands. Seriously considering getting the Mini Retina and giving my mom the Air because she has an old school ipad that is heavy as hell and runs hot. She uses it daily and replaced her laptop with it. So I figure this is a win win.

However before I consider this can anyone confirm that the display/colors are the same between the two? I think I read something where the mini had worse colors. Might have read that wrong. Also does the new Mini with Retina run hot? The air runs very cool.

I had the Mini Retina and switched to the Air. The Air's display is noticeably better but that isn't to say the MiniR's display is bad. Unless you spend the majority of your iPad usage looking at pictures and playing artistic games (e.g. Bastion) it shouldn't affect your decision.

Love the Air, too. But yeah I really do miss the size of the Mini despite the thinner and lighter profile of the Air. Tried to take the Air out a few times now and it's just a bit too much for anything outside the home. I tried to exchange the Air for a Mini but with it being out of the holiday return period it looks like I'll enjoy the Air for this year and sell to upgrade to the next Mini in Oct/Nov.

My number one requested improvement is for the screen to be laminated like the iPhone screen. That, 2GB RAM, thinness and weight back to Mini 1 levels and I'm set for a while.

Got my mini retina in grey last night. It's my first ipad and this thing is gorgeous. Never was a fan of the earlier ipads due to their awkward size and weight, but this thing is perfectly sized.

Looking for a nice folio case to bring along with me to client meetings and the like, any suggestions that won't break the bank? I'm looking at the smart covers also.

Get a smart case from Apple and be done with it.

What do you mean by 'icloud videos'? Are you talking about shared photo streams?
I'm guessing streaming purchased iTunes videos.

If so I'm not sure, maybe try turning off the "show all videos" option in Settings? Hopefully that'd wipe the cache of streamed files.

Doesn't. Right now the only thing that would clear it was a factory restore. Basically the feature is useless.
