I brought back my mini yesterday after I noticed a large brown smudge in the backlight right next to the camera. Was maybe 1 inche in diameter. They took it back no prob and i got a new one, thankfully with no issues!

Anyone else experience that?

nope, fortunately not.
What I did just experience was a weird sound issue: interferences and echo from out of nowhere. the "click" upon locking the screen sounded like somebody hitting a cymbal, music was distorted too. restarted the damn thing and now it's gone.

I've been toying with the idea of trading in my iPad (3rd gen) for a new retina mini. I just got off the phone with my dad who said he actually preferred browsing the web on his old iPad 2, due to the screen size. Would the resolution bump help out with that at all? I'm not sure if there is any scaling on the display, or how much.

Basically I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the $250 to get a retina mini. I only use it for Spotify and web browsing, especially since my laptop is kaput right now.

All the UI stuff is the same size, but the resolution is better.

My dad says he can barely see the difference between retina and without (He's 68), so if it is useful for him to have that extra resolution, you'll have to find out.

Yeah, I just didn't know if when rendering webpages, whether the same amount of content would be scaled up to the res, or if it would be sort of a 1:1 pixel mapping (wrong term) thing.

I'll honestly probably check it out later today or tomorrow when I go to the Apple store.

I got a $500 bonus from work in the form of an Apple giftcard and I ended up getting the Retina Mini.

I wasn't really in the market for a new tablet since I already have a pretty large phone (Note 2) and a Nexus 10 that does pretty much everything I need it to do (podcast/music playing, web browsing, videos). I don't really like the speaker on the Mini (my Nexus has front facing speakers that sound pretty good) so I doubt I'll be using it for audio too much.

Figuring out how to put files onto it was also a bit frustrating, but once I found out how to do it through iTunes it got a little easier.

I'll probably buy an iPad Mini Retina tomorrow. Just one thing I need some suggestions on. Do I have to go up to 32GB or do you think 16GB will be enough? I have 32GB on my iPhone 5 and it has never been close to full and I will probably have less photos and movies on the iPad.

Anyone who reads comics and game on a 16GB mini who can give me some input?

I think I have alot of manga on mine, and it all take up about 3 GB

I ran out of space on my 16gb iPad, but that was also because I was downloading a couple of magazine subscriptions which I never read. And some games clock in at 1+ GB, so there's something to consider.

I'd say if you can comfortably afford the 32, go with that.

Did you find a solution yet? What about those "cleaning apps", any recommendation?

What I do is simply go into Settings -> Usage and clear out "Video". It's a serious problem that I wish they'd resolve. Because sometimes I have to restart the device for it to register the correct amount of free space.

I have an Air, but I'd recommend a 32GB for sure. I almost wish I would have gotten a 64 now (too many great games to play!)

I went black on the Air, but a co-worker has the white model Retina Mini. Black shows them fingerprints, but I personally prefer the black model.

I have mine in a Poetic case, but went without a case for a few weeks. And I don't really "baby" my electronics. Not one scratch on it.

I would like to get one of these, definitely going for 32GB.. hate having to remove and reinstall apps when I run out of space on 16gb.

Will probably ask my Uncle to get one with the smart cover when he's next in NY in March, works out between £80-90 cheaper.

Btw, to anyone on the fence...I fucking love my ipad Mini (retina). It's the perfect size for around the house/travel portability without sacrificing much of the immersion.

On the software side can anyone recommend a good IM client on iOS? I have a few friends still on AIM, Facebook, Gtalk...etc. I was using trillian but they don't update it enough for my tastes and have notification bugs on my ipad.

Best case for iPad mini?

I'm a fan of the smart cover myself. But I also think a decent neoprene sleeve will do the trick for travel if you want to use your ipad naked but have it protected when you're done.

Thread title should be updated.

Getting mine soon. Was debating between mini or Air, but the Air is just too and I commute a lot via train, so a smaller form factor is more comfortable in crowded commutes.

Yea, I agree completely. I spend 4 hours a day commuting to and from work. Space is limited on the train.

Has anyone here ever used Splashtop for their iPad Mini?

I want to get a iPad Mini for school, but I also need to be able to access desktop apps, since some of my classes require applications that aren't on iOS. Would Splashtop be a good middle ground? Will I be able to access most of my desktop apps from this program?

Splashtop is great. Lots of little details and features that work well. I do prefer it on a 16:9 tablet or laptop, since displaying computer native resolution leaves unused screen space on the iPad. You do have the option of adjusting the computer's resolution to fit the iPad, but then it'll only display at 1024x768, which is good for aspect ratio, not so good for UI scaling and stuff. I'm not sure I'd want to depend on it for something really substantial and serious. YMMV though. It's totally usable.

I got a Retina Mini recently and I think I'm going to exchange it for the LTE version. I'm really missing it.

Does anyone find wifi only suitable? I take this thing everywhere.

I have a wifi model

if I ever need internet on the go or at hotels (I avoid public wifi) I tether from my iPhone

so for me it works out and is cheaper overall

AT&T are assholes. Since I have a grandfathered plan, they were going to charge me 50 for tethering!

WTF?! Verizon is free.

I exchanged it for an lte model.

Yep. I switched from AT&T (with grandfathered 'unlimited') to Verizon when the 5 came out just so I could tether at some point in the future.

Hey guys, I powered up my ipad mini yesterday and was greeted with this......

It's not going away and I've no idea what could have caused this.
I don't have apple care.
I got this a little over a month ago at a Apple store....Can they just swap me out or will they try to pull the "see our Genius specialists" for an issue that's clearly above their ability to fix anyway?
Thanks!

Wish these were cheaper. I'm torn between this and the Nexus 7 but with the Nexus 8 coming out I kinda want to wait.

But the Nexus 8 is prolly gonna be the same price as the Retina Mini which is too much and...arg.

It's still under warranty. The worse is that they fix it and best that they give you a new model.

I've just ordered an iPad Mini with Retina and a Moshi iVisor.

What cases are people using, I used to use an STM Skinny with my previous iPad's but I'm not sure if there's anything better out there.

does apple dropping the ipad 2 mean the original mini has a limited shelf life now? Tempted to buy one (or get one used from upgraders) as a coffee table web browser/media remote - mainly so my wife leaves my ipad air alone :) I'm figuring a basic mini should be fine as it is lighter, and much cheaper. But if it'll be dead in a year or so from an OS/apps point of view, I'd consider the retina.

If you love her, you'll eat her poop buy her Mini with Retina Display.

Just so it's the latest version with guaranteed longer shelf life than the original Mini.

Just get her the latest retina mini, the difference is not huge.

Thinking about getting ipad. Should I spend 100 bucks more on Air or get the Mini retina?

All I know is that benchmark is literally similar to between the two to the point where you won't notice any significant difference.

There is none, don't let it fool you. Mini is the best, I returned the Air for it. Too large and unwieldy.

It really just boils down to your screen size preference.

Well the obvious question is do you prefer the portability or extra space on the screen?

I'm most likely gonna use it for watching video and playing games like Shadowrun, Xcom, The Walking Dead, etc anywhere without hassle of taking out and setting up laptop.

If you're someone like me who's constantly holding up the iPad and walking around with it, the Mini is wonderful. Most other people I see just lay their iPad's on their laps or on a table and if you're doing that just go with the Air. Also depends if that extra screen space is important to you or not.

The Air is better for video watching - bigger, more vivid display. Gaming's more of a tossup.
