iPhone 4S |OT|

I am having a tiny amount of switcher's remorse as I look at these super-fast data speed test results on AT&T. No question AT&T has the fastest data results - when it actually works. I need to remind myself how frustrated I always was on AT&T with dropped calls, calls going straight to voicemail and low signal affecting my ability both to make calls and get data. I do wonder how much of that might have been mitigated by the new 4S antenna design.

I think real-world performance means more than these speedtest numbers. My speedtest numbers look fairly low compared to the AT&T numbers I'm seeing but in the real world when I browse the web the performance is just fine. I think it's only when you're really pulling heavy amounts of data, like downloading apps or music, that much of a difference is noted, and I don't really do that over 3G anyway. I tried streaming Sirius and Pandora over 3G and it worked just fine.

Serious question here:

How can the iPhone get any faster? I don't see me ever needed another phone again :\

This thing is lightning quick. If they change the design on the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen and curvy design then count me out. I'll never need more than 1080p and 8MP camera either.

I just don't see me upgrading unless it is something totally out of this world.

And LTE doesn't mean anything to me considering I'm in wifi all day and dont sub to a data plan.

Loving this phone!

My sister noticed that top with her 4S (I'm a 4 owner). In addition to disabling push, I had her shut Spotlight Search completely off. I learned the hard way during the iOS debacle that Spotlight Search is a resource hog and is probably draining your battery.

I'm hoping it helps her, but thought I'd share that here too

How do you do that? Just by unchecking everything?

What was your phone before the 4s?

You will upgrade but by the sound of it the 4S will be with you for a few years. I used the 2G (original iPhone) from 2007-2010 before upgrading to the iPhone 4. I was glad for the speed increase but it also marked the first time that my phone was no longer supported by Apple. No more iOS updates. That will force you to upgrade.

Hey, I preordered the iPhone 4s on the 7th and got it the 14th. BIG question .... They put ahold on my bank account for 212$ when I ordered it. I've had the phone for 4 days and they still haven't taken the $ out for the iPhone 4s?? Anyone else?

Anybody pre-order their 4s on Monday the 10th with ATT and have it ship yet? Mine is sitting on back order... :(
Preordered two (a white 16GB and a white 32GB) at my local AT&T store on Friday the 7th at 11:00AM and they're both still back ordered.

That is probably what will eventually get me to upgrade. Moreso the software than hardware. I think the hardware I got now would satisfy me for 5 years or more. I went about 3.5 years with my 3G.

Like I mentioned B4, I was dealing with a similar situation and was about to jump ship but I have noticed a substantial difference in my 4S reception at work and at home, the two most problematic places for me. Performance on the 4S on AT&T network is substantially better now.

Although i am on the East Coast......

Heh, maybe that helped too. Every other person wants to see the phone and I don't want them poking in my stuff so I turned it off lol

BTW how safe is iTunes? I see some people get their account hacked from time to time, but is that just because they might have had a bad password/keylogger on their system?

I have never had mine hacked or know anyone who has.

Don't get how so many are having battery problems with the 4S. Do you guys have e-mail set to push?

The last time I fully charged my 4S was about 15 hours ago and my battery life is currently at 20% (I'm about to charge it).

I have my email set to push and the battery life sucks ass. I don't think push can be the culprit as I have used push on all my other iphones and didnt have this issue. That being said, I don't want to turn off push. In this day and age email needs to be instant and turning it off is not an acceptable solution.

ps: For some reason, it won't charge with the generic usb car charger I used with my old phone :\

Yeah, I asked about car chargers earlier.. apparently most of them are strong enough to charge smart phones and the like, but I have yet to find one that does.

Anybody know of one?

Was posted already but I just used the Vimeo app on Apple TV to stream this:

And it looks even more amazing when viewed on a big native 1080p display. If you've got Apple TV check it out. Stunning.

Kinda makes me wish I would have gotten the 64GB model, think they'd let me exchange it if I haven't opened it yet?

I'd love to shoot stuff like that video but I'm perfectly happy with my 32gb. I don't have a ton of content on my phone so I have plenty of space to shoot video. As someone pointed out earlier, an HOUR of 1080p video is about 10gb.

not me, this is my current 32GB iPhone 4:

Verizon is an interesting beast.

Did the 450 plan. Unlimited text. And 2gb of data.

Was going to do friends and family with 900 and then found out that my family in puerto Rico doesn't count.

Such bullshit. Makes me want to switch to AT&T& now.

Might as well just call family on weekends.

This switching game is pissing me off.

And yes the sprint speeds are that bad in NYC.

Well I finally got HD anime running really well with subs if anyone else was interested

It requires

MKV/AVI To MP4 (Available here http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkvavi2mp4)
AV Player ($2.99 on iTunes)

I use MKV/AVI To MP4 to change the container of the MKV to MP4. It can be natively played in the normal iPhone player, but without subs unfortunately. Changing to an MP4 does help with playing the file in AV Player. I noticed lagging during higher bit rate scenes with the MKV, but on the MP4 no lag.

I am able to get subtitles as well. Only problem I'm facing right now is the subs every once in awhile don't appear for some dialogue.

Edit: It looks like it might have something to do with the MP4 conversion process. Hopefully I can get this fixed. Ripping .SRT's and converting to MP4's with the srt is a pain in the ass, so this would be the simplest way to do it, if it works.

Anyone know of a conversion program that won't touch the main video stream and will just put it in a mp4/m4v with the subtitle that was embedded with it? Seems this program that I was using likes to mess with the subtitle a little bit, that being the reason that the sub sometimes does not show up.

In handbrake you can force subs.

For people that don't need to shoot 1080p for everything. Video cam apps that allow different file quality seems to work on 4S.

At the very least procamera works.

Quick question, how many of y'all actually use the 'volume +' button as 'shutter'? I find it hard to use in pretty much all my cases, and you do have to grip it 'delicately' to not cover the camera, which can be problematic ;/

I use it whenever I take a picture, it's easier for me to keep the camera steady that way.

You really should check out the plethora of 3rd party camera apps. Most have the ability to use the gyroscope, or was that the accelerometer, so that the shutter goes off when the phone is steady.

Rather handy feature.

It forces re-encoding :(

I'm not even sure .ass works with .mp4. It seems it might need to be converted to .txtt

This program I was using looks like it does that expect it seems it goes .ass -> .srt -> .ttxt and then says there is corrupted text lines or something that aren't in sync and the outputted file is missing subtitles during certain spots.

I just don't get how ones are saying that the battery life is terrible when the battery life to my 4S lasted more than 14 hours today which is better than my 3GS.

Unless you get a ton of important e-mails that need to be replied to within minutes, I don't see why one wouldn't want to switch it to fetch. I have mine's set to fetch for every 30 mins. For many (me included) there really isn't a big difference seeing as how a good number don't get that many e-mails to notice that big of a difference between the two settings (outside of improved battery life).

This thread is killing me! I will have to wait until late November to upgrade to the 4s. The pictures / video posted recently look amazing!

So my 32GB 4S says that I have 7.3 GB of free space (in the settings menu) but when I hook it up to iTunes it says that I only have 4 GB of free space with it also saying that I have an extra 3GB of video stored on my phone (6GB instead of the actual 3GB).

Really strange.

Is it worth paying over £20 for a bumper from Apple.com/uk ?

or just pick up a cheap one from Amazon?

Based on reviews, they aren't worth anything.

- Scratches the iPhone
- Dirts goes between bumper and phone and scratches
- Picks up dirt easily
- Dirt isn't removable from the bumper
- Picks up dye from denim (if you put in jeans pocket)

:(

Am I the only person that finds myself holding the phone the "wrong" way when using it in landscape? I've always held it so that the home button is on the right (easier to access it with my right hand), but it's apparent (first #sworcery would auto-rotate that way and now the camera obviously needs to be that way to use the volume/shutter button) that I'm supposed to hold it the other way.

Just an observation really. I'm so used to looking at the home page text/icons in landscape that way that my brain finds it hard to identify things the other way. :p

Same here. It's not a problem if all you do is browse Safari and watch videos, but it's pretty jarring now that I'm finally getting back into iOS gaming.

Anyone find it odd that the app switcher doesn't re-orient in landscape mode? It wouldn't' take up any extra room to just rotate the icons down there like how the Photos app handles it when you turn the phone.

It appears I've been holding it the wrong way all this time.

T-Mobile are a little odd. Was gonna order from their website and it said within 30days, so I gave them a call instead. They just said should be with me on Thursday!

I barely hit 2MB download speeds at my home in baltimore. I've seen it as low as .05MB. However, I went to DC this past weekend and I was peaking around 6.5MB. SMH..., I wish I lived there.
