iPhone 4S |OT|

Okay, having used the 4S for a couple of days, I'm profoundly Impressed. My battery hasn't been charged in just over 24 hours, and I had my 10% warning 30 minutes ago. I'm trying to run the battery down but it's still going. Just been using wifi, watching YT, and just took a five minute call from my wife. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this post before it all goes black.

50% brightness, light 3G use, moderate wifi use (including a couple of hours talk time via Skype app) push notifications on, location services all on. It really does just depend how an individual uses the phone, but for my usage the battery is absolutely fine.

Using the flash as an LED indicator is a poor choice because:
  • It's at the back of the phone
  • It kills battery life
  • It's at the back of the phone
  • It makes the phone hot
  • It's at the back of the phone
  • It's not so easy to notice in a brightly lit place
  • It's at the goddam back of the phone.
 
Battery life on iPhones is always better the first few days. Been that way with the 4-5 iPhones I've used over the years. It deteriorates a fair bit after that initial warming period, and then either stabilises or gets worse over the months.

I asked this a few pages back, but it was lost in some hullabaloo, I think.

Is there any benefit to buying a full priced iPhone on ATT to avoid a contract? I don't travel internationally or anything. I just don't want to be stuck in another contract (but I have 6 months left before I can get out of this one). If I had an ATT 4S I could only ever use it with ATT, right?
 
I see there are some flashlight apps out there that use the LED flash. It actually makes a great flashlight but can you damage/burn out the flash leaving it on like that?
 
Cook and Oppenheimer keep stressing that rumors and speculation of the next iPhone in the second half of the quarter really started to hit the steady rate of iPhone sales.

I don't think so, I used that often on the iPhone 4 when I had it, and on all my other phones that support it, to no ill effect. I didn't use it for hours straight (I don't think the battery would last that long?) but in short bursts, for a couple of minutes, it worked great.

I doubt it. It's an LED and I don't think they're pushing it past it's normal level. HTC phones even come with an app that lets you do this which I don't think they'd do if there were much risk to the LEDs.

It feels just like my iPad to be honest. I've been using it much more heavily than I will ever usually have cause to unless I'm making videos or taking a lot of pictures. Bottom line is that it could deteriorate quite a bit, but as long as I charge it when I'm at home I'll never need to worry about the battery, which is a big relief after reading some of the posts in this thread.

GAF app is amazing, by the way. I always preferred the desktop version of the site on iPad, but on the phone it's a godsend.

Yeah, plus Apple initially banned those apps before relenting and allowing them back into the AppStore. I don't think they would be there if the flashlight destroyed the camera.

On the other hand, the iPhone 4 got its first discounts in the weeks leading up to the end of the quarter. I also recall some bloggers saying there wasn't any dip in sales *shrug* 17 million is a fucking lot of phones to sell, Cook doesn't need to be defensive.

  1. I'm proposing flashing it, like an indicator, not leaving it on steady, heat should not be an issue.
  2. It's an LED, thus it will have minimal impact on battery life, assuming it's flashing.
  3. It can't be harder to see than other LED indicators, given it's apparently brighter than they are.
  4. I bet you'd notice it flashing EVEN IF IT'S ON THE BACK.
I assume it isn't possible due to third-party apps not having access to the notification status; otherwise it would be already done. Worry about burnout is unlikely the problem or that Flashlight app wouldn't be perpetually near the top of the App Store.

I have one called LED Flashlight. It's basically one giant button, and a thing on the bottom where you can make the LED flicker. Along the sides, it also allows you to turn the screen one solid color in order to have a less bright 'screen flashlight'

I leave it on when I use the phone as a flashlight (and have occasionally toggled it on by accident in my pocket) and discovered that heat is an issue and so is battery life. You can't notice if it's on when the phone is on its back. If the phone is facedown (which is retarded) you'll miss the initial notification. Like I said, I was encouraged to see it (and the volume+ as shutter button) in iOS5 because I though it meant Apple was tossing a bone to the iPhone4 and 3GS users while they brought the proper hardware features in the next model. The flash LED as an indication doesn't hold a candle to a proper LED notification system.

Edit: Wait a minute, doesn't the LED flash for notifications work for all push notifications on your phone?

I've used one called "Light" since the iPhone 4 launch. It's the same basic thing. Comes in handy all the time.

As for a LED notification, I couldn't care less.

Crazy how that story was born on a random web forum and a day later it's being heard by millions over the airwaves.

Maybe the Droid was just a special piece of shit, but it would literally take 10-15 minutes to realize it was no longer within range of my home Wi-Fi and connect to 3G. If I ever went underground or in an elevator, or otherwise lost my 3G connection, it would take up to 10 minutes to reconnect to the network.

With the 4S, it damn near instantly connects to any available network. It's pretty cool to be able to step out of an elevator and instantly have network access.

I'm sure this isn't something unique to the iPhone, but I'm still very impressed coming from the Droid.

I think your Droid was a special PoS. I'm coming from a Droid Incredible and it never, ever had trouble detecting networks.

I ended up keeping my iPhone and unless the Prime blows me the fuck away, I'll probably keep it for good. Coming from an Android user, I'm still not completely sold on iOS yet, but so far, I've noticed a spit and polish that Android simply doesn't have.

Available on my iPhone 4 running iOS 5, so it might be a 4S issue.

My OG Droid has/had the same problem. Although it has mysteriously been on its best behavior ever since I ordered the iPhone.

Actually I had a very similar experience with this just recently (except the cheating part). I went to see The Thing remake with a buddy of mine and my wife looked up my position on a whim (I guess?) and it put me somewhere in the middle of some forest, then a ways up the road, then finally at the movie theater. But before it finished locating me she texted saying "What's up?". I glanced at it during the movie real quick but didn't answer because I had no idea why she'd text me that in the middle of a movie. Later asked her about it and got the story.

registered users = meaningless. ACTIVE users = ~1,000 at any given time. It's not random in the sense you think I meant it, but it's certainly not GAF. and more to the point, it wasn't posted on MacRumors.com's homepage. It was born in a random ass thread in a sub-forum of a sub-forum.

point was it always amazes me how something can start so small...then word of mouth hits and the next thing you know, the WORLD knows about it.

I would bet.. that with the record iPhone launch + upcoming holiday iPad sales that this next quarter might see record profits for Apple... record revenue is almost a lock.

What?

My Blackberry doesn't flash until it's telling me I have a Text, Email or BBM. It's a fucking brilliant feature. Thinking of getting the 4S but I'll miss that flashing light greatly. Having my phone out, on silent in a lecture is great because it just tells me when I need to look at it. Rather than me having to keep checking it by tapping the home button.

Saying that, the 4S will finally solve the problems I have when I'm listening to my iPod whilst travelling and I've got no idea if my phone's going off in my pocket. Can't even feel vibrate when I walk.

I was simply pointing out that they missed estimates. Noting more or less. They still had an amazing quarter, and they're likely to make up for it through the holiday season. Trust me, I fully realize that this is more about shifting sales and revenues rather than actually missing them.

I was one of those that was ready to buy a phone in June and held off until October after all.

White LEDs dissipate a lot of power. In fact, you can buy white LEDs with heat sinks to help with this problem. No idea what sort of power the iPhone flash LED is using but they certainly can get very hot.

Also I'm definitely in the "I don't want or need a blinking LED on my phone" camp.
 
The Touchpad has its home button light up when you have a new notification, it's great. I wish the iPhone's home button would do it. It makes sense and there's really no downside.

Oh that would be pretty damn cool. If they just had the home button square glow or whatever when you have to-be-viewed notifications, that would be pretty awesome. Obviously make it optional for those who don't like it.
