Depends on what you want to do, I guess... Some people were talking about streaming music from iTunes Match over 3G. 200kbps is probably too low to accomplish that without pauses. Really, any kind of streamed content will benefit from higher download speeds, i.e. pull-down maps for a navigation app, video, whatever.

Web browsing and email probably benefit little from higher speeds.

I honestly think one of the main differences could be ping time for actual web browsing.

My HSPA pings were almost always ~300.

My HSPA+ pings on my 4S are now all closer to ~200.

This thread, analyzing the HTML.. has the potential to make up to 70 requests to the server.

Now.. just for data analysis, the raw data:

70 x's 300 = 2100 milliseconds.. or 21 seconds just for the latency of each request if made synchronously.

70 x 200 = 1400 milliseconds.. or 14 seconds just for the latency of each request if made synchronously.

Now obviously the browser will make many requests at once, and the majority will only get accessed once and then cached for a time period.. but it still can make a fairly large difference.

From what I've seen Verizon 3g tests have much better ping times than AT&T's.. could make up for the lack of overall bandwidth, since the majority of those requests would probably download faster than the ping time.

The page only had 456kb total size.. so file size wise the entire site would download in barely 2 seconds even on a 1.5Mbit connection.. making bandwidth differences somewhat nominal.

I am assuming you're coming from a Blackberry.

Speaking as a long time Blackberry user who just went to iPhone last Friday, let me assure you you are NOT going to miss the indicator light. I was terrified of that and the virtual keyboard.

Hahaha, yeah. I miss my Blackberry like I miss herpes. If I ever had herpes, that is. Ahem.

This iPhone is one of the best personal electronics decisions I have EVER made.

Coming from the original Droid, actually.

I absolutely do not regret the switch to iPhone. I was extremely excited for it, and it's been completely awesome so far. The lack of notification lamp is the only thing that kind of bothers me. I'm sure I'll get over it, but it kind of sucks that I'm going to have to manually check for email/messages if I miss the initial push notification.

I'm taking my Verizon phone on a business trip at the end of the week, that should be a pretty thorough test. If I'm not happy I guess I'll exchange it for an AT&T phone but that's gonna be hassle.

I think Reminders were actually draining the battery, since it is constantly searching for when I leave work or home or wherever. I got rid of my reminders, turned my brightness back up, as well as a few location services, and the battery hasnt moved in the last 20 minutes.

Yeah if you have a geofenced reminder set up that's bound to affect battery life as it has to be constantly pinging your location.

You live in the Bay Area correct?

My girlfriend moved here from San Jose early last year.. spent a lot of time down there and also bought her an iPhone 3GS to use... never had great experiences.. she got little to no service at her apartment even though she lived right off of a main thoroughfare and right near downtown San Jose. (she lived off of Saratoga)

Here in Seattle it's night and day with AT&T.. never had major problems.. good data speeds all over the place, even well outside city limits.

Such a regional issue.. I think you made the right choice considering where you live seems to have AT&T AIDS.

Just tweeted a photo to see what the file upload performance is like and it was dispatched in about two seconds. Nice!

Also, as a result of this test you get a free photo of a cat.

Yeah the SF Bay Area is filled with people complaining about AT&T.

That would do it! Having the GPS on all the time is going to really hammer the battery. I've used the geotagged reminders and they are very nice, but I try to use them sparingly.

From selecting a website to being fully rendered it's about 3-5 seconds depending on the site. I'm sure AT&T is beating that but honestly, if 3 seconds isn't fast enough for me I need to seriously reevaluate my life.

On Verizon here as well.

My wife was on AT&T on her old iPhone 3GS, and the 4S spanks that phone on Verizon. It also obliterates my Blackberry Bold, but that goes without saying.

I think the main AT&T benefit is simultaneous voice/data use, but it is so rare of a need for me I don't much care. Verizon's superior coverage more than nullifies that advantage IMO.

Oh yeah, definitely. I intend to set them for "There's something I have to do when I leave in about 30 minutes" and not "There's something I have to do when I leave in about 6 hours". It would be nice if they didn't drag down the battery but what can you do?

Exactly. There is just no way around it at this point. Any GPS chip/system is a battery hog.

I love my Otterbox Impact case for its rubbery feel and perfect thinkness, but it picks up hair and dust like nothing else. Any alternatives that are still rubbery and protective but that don't pick up so much crap?

Someone could make the proper thread when more info is released:

"Apple just announced its Q4 2011 numbers, and as usual the company has hauled in a boatload of cash: $6.62b in profit on $28.27b in revenue, with 11.1m iPads sold and 17.1m iPhones."

We should come up with a sweet title for it.

"Overpriced and Underpowered Hardware Maker Records Record Profits" or something...that'd be a good one for hits.

This sums it up for me. I disabled WiFi on my phone, downloaded the Speedtest app on my Verizon iPhone 4S and was not impressed with the results. Actually went around and visited some websites, including GAF, and was pleased with the speed. AT&T just had so many nasty inconsistencies for me along my daily route, as well. (I work in Seattle)

Am I the only person that finds myself holding the phone the "wrong" way when using it in landscape? I've always held it so that the home button is on the right (easier to access it with my right hand), but it's apparent (first #sworcery would auto-rotate that way and now the camera obviously needs to be that way to use the volume/shutter button) that I'm supposed to hold it the other way.

Just an observation really. I'm so used to looking at the home page text/icons in landscape that way that my brain finds it hard to identify things the other way. :p
If the orientation of pictures after sync to PC via iCloud Control Panel is anything to go by, it looks as though we're actually supposed to have the volume buttons AT THE BOTTOM as we take a picture in landscape mode. My pics are upside down. :s

EDIT: Windows problem apparently!

EDIT: Well, time to eat crow. Apparently this is a Windows issue. The inbuilt JPEG display in Windows (and hence Media Center) doesn't honor the EXIF flag that tells it which way to "soft"-rotate the photo for display purposes. The way most everyone else does it is that the original photograph is not rotated at all--it's left the way it is, but when displaying the photo, the EXIF information is inspected and if the photo was taken in a different orientation then it is rotated immediately prior to being displayed (but the original photo is untouched).

Long story short, this is Microsoft's problem to fix. Still it would behoove Apple to put a support article up explaining this behavior with PhotoStream on Windows rather than just leaving the end-user scratching their head.

Apple apparently missed street estimates for the first time since 2004 (I think), it pretty much just gave back all the gains it made this month.

4S numbers should boost things back up next quarter, since some are speculating the extended wait for the "next" iphone this cycle dinged sales a bit.

Wouldn't you expect any benefit of the phone launch to tell next quarter? There would have been a lull in sales as people wait for the new phone and with only a few days on sale (and possible supply constraints) it's going to be tough to turn that all around.

Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results
All-Time Record Mac and iPad Sales
Highest September Quarter Revenue and Earnings Ever
CUPERTINO, California—October 18, 2011—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 fourth quarter ended September 24, 2011. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $28.27 billion and quarterly net profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 40.3 percent compared to 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 63 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The Company sold 17.07 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 21 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 11.12 million iPads during the quarter, a 166 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 4.89 million Macs during the quarter, a 26 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 6.62 million iPods, a 27 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

“We are thrilled with the very strong finish of an outstanding fiscal 2011, growing annual revenue to $108 billion and growing earnings to $26 billion,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Customer response to iPhone 4S has been fantastic, we have strong momentum going into the holiday season, and we remain really enthusiastic about our product pipeline.”

“We are extremely pleased with our record September quarter revenue and earnings and with cash generation of $5.4 billion during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2012, which will span 14 weeks rather than 13, we expect revenue of about $37 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share of about $9.30.”

Apple will provide live streaming of its Q4 2011 financial results conference call beginning at 2:00 p.m. PDT on October 18, 2011 at www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq411. This webcast will also be available for replay for approximately two weeks thereafter.

I think all of the iOS sales were up, just not as high as estimates... For the first time we did see the precipitous drop in iPod sales that have been expected for some time.

AppleInsider said:
Apple sold 17.07 million iPhones during the quarter as it drew down inventories ahead of this month's iPhone 4S launch, still representing 21 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. The Cupertino-based firm also reported new quarterly records for iPad sales at 11.2 million units and Macs at 4.89 million units, an increase of, a 166 percent and 26 percent, respectively.

Apple also sold a record low 6.62 million iPods, a 27 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 40.3 percent compared to 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter and International sales accounted for 63 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Bah, Wall Street, what do they know. What were the blogger-analysts expectations, those are the people who are right on the money, amirite or am I right?

My wife has been offered the upgrade from her 3GS, would she be better with the 16GB or 32?
Thanks.

Well...how much stuff does she have to put on the phone? Kind of a personal question there. Only outside thought I could give is if she is planning to record hours of video before syncing then get the 32+.

The talking heads on CNBC were expecting 18-20 million iphones. Will try and find an article about it but there were plenty of doomsayers warning of an bubble.

iPhone sales were down because the 4S just came out (and people were holding out). The iPhone 4 came out in June, rather than October.

So now would be a good time to buy some AAPL while investors are being retarded. They just sold a crap load of 4S's and the next quarter will likely be a great one.

Do other apps have access to notification status? If so, I would think it would be possible to turn the flash LED on the back of the phone into a blinking message alert.

As iPhone Sales Dip Ahead Of 4S, Apple’s Earnings Fall Below Street Expectations
Apple came in at $28.27 billion. That's still their second best quarter ever — just shy of last quarter's record $28.5 billion quarter — but it is below the Street.

So why the miss? Well, the main reason is likely the iPhone. Sales dipped over 3 million compared to last quarter.

Is it really that hard to understand? I personally know tons of people who were holding out to buy an iPhone 4 because of the iPhone 5 rumor-mill and announcement of the 4S (since early 2011).

They just sold over 4 million 4S's. I don't think they have to prove anything to anyone.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/44908357

Apple earnings excluding items rose to $7.05 a share in its fiscal fourth quarter from $4.64 per share a year earlier.

Revenue jumped 39 percent to $28.3 billion from $20.3 billion in the 2010 third quarter.

Analysts had expected the technology giant to earn $7.39 per share on revenue on $29.69 billion. It was the first miss for the company since 2004.

The company sold 17.07 million iPhones during the quarter; Wall Street had expected something in the 18 million to 20 million range, given that 20.3 million were sold in the third quarter.
not sure how realistic Wall Street's estimates are, considering that a fair number of people knew that a new iPhone was eminent and possibly deferred their purchases.

ok i might have to find an occupy wallstreet protest somewhere . . .

How short? Well, even though Apple’s own guidance for the quarter was $25 billion in revenue, analysts seem to have wised up to Apple’s always-low estimates and were projecting numbers far higher: they were looking for around $29.5 billion. Apple came in at $28.27 billion. That’s still their second best quarter ever — just shy of last quarter’s record $28.5 billion quarter — but it is below the Street.

As I said, if you've been considering buying in on AAPL, now's your time (they're down $26/share right now).

That would be retarded. The flash LED is a poor solution and I was only encouraged by it because it was taken as an indicator that Apple would put a proper LED in the iPhone 4S (or 5 as we thought the next model would be called). Don't bother turning it on in regular usage, it's in Accessibility for a reason.

All logic says this is a terrible time to buy Apple stock because it's at such a high point but my heart says next year will be even better for them.

Yeah I've heard from people who value that voice-data feature but I think I can count the number of times I used it on one hand (and some of those were probably wifi).

Apple made the move from a June iPhone launch in the U.S. to an October launch (4 months). It's not surprising that iPhone sales were down. iPhone had been released in Canada during July in previous years and that was pushed back 3 months. Same for many other countries.
