Looks like those glowing Apple logo backplates have begun arriving and popping up on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqBGwJ6q-SI

Mine still isn't here yet, and I'm still not totally sure if I want to install it, because I've seen a few people say that it could short out the phone. No idea if that's true, but it makes me nervous.

Silly question, but is there any quick/easy way to transfer a chunk of contacts from an old phone to iPhone 4S?

In the context that they are all just in csv or notepad format.

Or just as easy to punch them back in manually?

If the old phone has a backup process i.e. Outlook, then do that. If not, save them to a SIM and then Import SIM Contacts onto iPhone.

I asked in another thread but this might be a better place. My Android cracked and still works. Verizon somehow has a upgrade sheduldd at the end of January, even though I've had the phone for a year and a half. Should I just get a 4s right then, or wait out some update or spring conference.

No one knows when the next iPhone is due, and anyone telling you they do is a fool.

But I believe that Apple is now planning on releasing iPhones in the Fall, iPads in the Spring.

So I don't expect a new iPhone until ~Oct 2012.

Hey, what's the easiest way to get my pics off my phone? Like if I wanted to post one on GAF or something. They don't show up on iTunes on PC do they?

Pictures taken with the camera? Your phone should mount the DCIM folder when you plug it in, it will just be in Windows Explorer.

Or without plugging it in you can always go the upload route through various apps (Drobbox, etc.)

Not sure how iCloud works with PC and pictures.

Your advice about the DCIM folder is correct.

But iCloud works a charm on PC. There's an Apple PC client that syncs to a folder of your choice. Set it up in a few moments... never physically dig for photos again!

So my wife's old featurephone has finally died on her, so I'm ready to grab her a 32GB 4S from Verizon.

Are there any must-have accessories that I should pick up with it, or will she be good to go with just the phone?

Just the phone is plenty fine for me in my day to day. A lot of people opt for a case of some kind. I'd argue that depending on the person, not having a case would be just fine...but if you know the person is particularly clumsy or would be the type to throw it on a table or put it in a purse filled with other crap...a case may be a good thing to get.

If she plans on using it as a GPS in her car you may want to investigate a car mount of some kind.

Beyond that, I don't think there's any accessory that is really a must have unless she's into very specific things.

You don't want another android phone?

Also, is this typical usage for other people? I mean the reason I switched to iphone was the battery and this usage is with the brightness at like 10% - I always turn it down this low when I'm going to be out for the night.

Seems off. I went through over 3 hours of usage (and 12 hrs standby) at half brightness and my 4S is still above 50% charge.

Oh are these phones having battery problems?

Well fuck I was wondering why my battery is dead after about 4-5 hours of 3g usage, and somehow is just losing % in standby.

What's weird is that ever since it became 2012 it seems like mine has been doing even worse. I know that sounds odd but before it wasn't too bad, but now it drains very fast. I haven't changed any settings or added anything new App-wise to it.

I thought it was because I had apps using notifications and that they were just checking for them constantly.

No, you have a lemon. Take it to an Apple Store and have a Genius replace it.

This is my usage at 10%:

Watching vids, push notification, playing games, and his regular brightness setting can possibly make that usage time normal. It's hard to tell unless you get a bit more specific, but right now it sounds like you need a replacement.

For everyday usage, mine is about the same as Chuck's. Great standby time and all.

That's some amazing fucking battery life!

I have to keep my GN plugged in while gaming if I run at 50% brightness, 4g on, and all push and sync features enabled. Even then, depending on the game, it may not charge!

Was surprised to see talk time be higher than the 4s. I'm sure the enormous battery has something to do with that though :p

My girlfriend's Nexus drains to about 35% by noon after being fully charged overnight.

The 4S is the 3rd iPhone I've owned and I've yet to have battery issues with any of them.

i get about 4 hours of usage out of a full charge. I usually just browse and text. I'm gonna wait for 5.1, but if that doesn't fix it, I guess I'll have to go and get it replaced. Will they give me any trouble for wanting to replace the phone? I don't want them to tell me to reset the phone or some shit. I've already done that, and it didn't help. I just want them to replace it.

34%
6 hours, 19 minutes usage
1 Day, 16 hours standby
Most of that time spent in low reception / no service areas. Some gaming (nothing intensive), some Wifi, some 3G, very little talking.

Brightness around 20% for most of the time, 100% for a little over the time.

Is this mostly on wifi?

Mostly on 3G. My phone automatically connects to my router when I'm home, which is when I snapped that screen capture.

I've had Apple swap my iPhone once already under warranty because the last phone's battery would drain itself even when it was plugged into the charger. It's a fairly painless process. I contacted AppleCare and got the rep to make a note on my account that my battery was borked with instructions to have it replaced when I made a reservation at an Apple Store.

Damn, 20% brightness Stump? How do you see anything? I need to have mine on 50% minimum to stay sane (I have a 4 but I don't think there's a difference)

Haha, true story. I like to keep my phone in front of the AC vent for a bit to make it cold to the touch. Something about it being cold makes it feel like it runs faster. Maybe this is a mentality that stems from me messing with cars so much.

Should voice & data roaming be turned off? I have Sprint and I noticed voice roaming defaulted to on, with data roaming turned off.

it won’t really matter unless you leave the country. I leave data roaming off and voice roaming on when I go international.

36% here
Usage: 4 hours, 37 minutes
Standby: 7 hours, 23 minutes

But to be fair I have had it plugged in briefly on my 10 minute drive to work. If you removed that, it would probably be around 30% battery.

Finally replaced the stolen Evo 4g that I love with an iphone 4s, honestly games were the deciding factor because none of the best upcoming W7/Android phones seem to be coming to my carrier anytime soon.

Now one small question problem

On my evo my personal Gmail and my school email (which uses gmail but also is a bit weird login wise) worked flawlessly.

Now on the iphone the school email can't be logged in unless I use the school website in safari, and neither seem able to stay signed in, in safari in the mail app in the gmail app. ARGH Any tips?

Also any non rerelease rpg's I should check out? Basically the one genre where virtual sticks/buttons don't make me want to smash whatever device I'm holding.

Digging it so far but the screen size being so small is going to take a TON of getting used to.

Did you configure the accounts through the mail app? Gmail shouldn't have any issues, regardless of whether you configure it through the default Gmail account wizard or through the Exchange settings (if you want Push). Is your school mail POP3 or IMAP? For my school email, I think I just added the account to my Gmail using the account importer and accessed it that way.

Ah, cool. Thanks for the advice.

Not really doable as contacts are all over the place (old phone, business cards, various email addresses etc)

Surprised that there is not an easy way to punch them in via iTunes or something.

So I kno this has been asked countless times but my sister is insisting I get a case for my 4S. Now I've searched through this thread and I haven't found a defintive answer. Keep reading about cases scratching the back iPhone among other things like dirt getting in etc. So is there any case that protects against fall damage without scratching the phone and preferably still keeping the nice aesthetic?

Thanks. And yeah, I'm leaving android for the possibility of more/better games. Didn't have a problem with my HTC Incredible. It was pretty good at the time specs wise and I was stuck getting what Verizon was offering. Mo options now.
