I finally got the guts to switch from AT&T to Sprint but I have no idea how to utilize my unlimited data now. Before, I only used FB and Twitter and never really touched streaming stuff- which apps should I check out that are data-heavy?

Is there still a jailbreak app for tethering? I think that'd probably come in handy for my iPad.

Best jailbreak is my 3g. It's not a tether but it makes the iPhone infinitely better. Basically all WiFi only restrictions are gone. It tricks the device, so I can FaceTime, download apps > 20mb ect all over 3G.

FaceTime at the Grand Canyon, and recently the Observatory near my home was awesome over 3G. It was great to show my family back home what it's like out here.

It is on wi-fi. And yeah, think I'm gonna go without a screen protector. Barring the bubbles, I didn't like the way the thing looked on my phone.

Check out MediaDevil (used to be PhoneDevil) protectors.

I put on a protector from them and can't notice it unless if I look closely at the front camera.

Contemplating going case-free.

I just now ordered the baseonelabs impactband.

Thick bumper that apparently offers up to 16 feet of drop protection.

I just know I'm gonna drop it and I don't want to cover the back or front of the phone up.

Black bumpers on white iPhones look sexy as hell anyway:

I was going to get Apple's but it's going to take forever to ship and it apparently doesn't offer that great of drop protection.

I've been rocking case free unless I'm out for drinking or jogging. It's great, I like the feel of the phone a lot better and I appreciate how unnoticeable the thing is in my pocket.

The only recent chatter about Apple events is some media event supposedly about education and/or iBooks. No announcement or talk from Apple about it so it's all just people blowing smoke right now, but it sounds like a pretty credible rumor swirling around many credible sites.

No known dates or expectations for the new iPad announcement, but there were reports of Foxconn going into a production frenzy to try and hit an earlier release window (the rumor your co-worker was referencing).

Either way, it's all just guessing at this point.

Apple only announces media events about ONE WEEK in advance.

No one knows anything, trust no one.

This should go into the op of every apple thread.

Got my 4S a few days ago and loving it (aside from using plenty of Android/iOS devices at work and owning an iPad 2, this is actually my first smartphone). I've heard people bitching about the battery life, but I'm pretty conditioned to changing my settings throughout the day. If I'm not actively using the phone, I've got WiFi and 3G turned off, and unless I need it, Location Services is off, too.

After a full day outside of the house (leaving at 8 AM and getting home at like 7:30 PM), I've got about 40% remaining. This includes using it to listen to music/podcasts, using apps throughout the day and taking/posting some pictures. That's perfectly satisfactory for me.

So I think my 4S' wifi is kicking the bucket. It'll stop working needing a restart to catch a signal. I think a restore is in order and maybe a trip to an Apple Store.

I have been going bareback with my Black 4s for about a month and LOVE it! today I noticed a very small hairline scratch on the back of my phone, you really can't see it unless you are looking in the right light.

however I think I need to start using some kind of case. Do you guys have any recommendations for a case that does not make the phone too big? I just want the back to be protected.

I'm looking for suggestions on some sort of protection for the iPhone 4. The thing is I love the aesthetics so I don't want to butcher them with some huge case. I've looked at the Apple bumpers but lots of reviews suggest they scratch the metal on the side of the phone.

I used a bumper until it fell apart (took approximately 1 year). I don't want to say it scratched the metal, but there was some discoloration in some areas like the side around the microsim tray, and the bottom around the connection port.

My bumper definitely made some marks on my iPhone 4's band.

Thanks. It's comments like this that put me off. It might be my best way to protect the phone without ruining it's beautiful design though.

Another thing I thought of, I plan to get a dock so I can just place my phone in it to charge each night. I'll have to take my bumper off each time I do this, which might increase the damage it does to the phone, plus the overall retention of my bumper.

Might just go case less.

Is anyone having issues with push gmail? The last few days I've been missing messages and even sometimes getting them over 24 hours late. What the hell? I have it set up through exchange, etc. It worked perfectly for a while. I just sent myself an email and it hasn't popped up. It used to take less than 5 seconds. *sgh*

My gmail actually hasn't been pushing since I upgraded to the 4S (on launch)

Just haven't actually researched it yet, but I did toggle the Push option in the settings... it only checks if I open the app. :/

In other subjects, I've been going naked since launch. Last week I bought a Lifeproof. I couldn't stand how big it was (felt like I traded for a plastic android phone)... plus it didn't work with the new car adapter I got, so I took it back and ordered the blue Apple bumper. Think I'll just be doing the bumper plus a Gelaskin for my protection.

Push only works if you configure the Gmail account through Exchange- otherwise, it's fetch.

Interesting... I swear I remember it being a big deal that gmail did push (couple years ago), but I don't remember having to use exchange for it. Thanks though, I'll try it out!

Yeah. No shit. But its not working. Just curious if anyone else has been having this issue.

I'm grumpy because this piece of shit phone just woke me up from a nap and then refused to reconnect to the gtalk server to retrieve the messages that were just pushed to it in the fucking first place. iOS is trash.

edit:
ok im not angry anymore

I'm right with you. I just got mine less than a month ago. I couldn't be happier with my decision to switch from my Droid to a 4S.

You wouldn't have this problem if you waited for the Nexus.

gtalk is a shit app on both operating systems.

using verbs. it's just more push notification madness. it's just every time. my phone starts going off, I look at it SEE the messages, and then swipe to reply and OH WHOOPS actually my phone isn't doing shit. the messages disappear and get caught in limbo while I have to wait for it to reconnect and sync messages. it's the worst thing ever.

Is the bumper really that bad at scratching the metal?

I've browsed a range of cases and it's the only one that protects the phone whilst retaining it's original good looks.

And is there anyway to buy it without Apple's extortionate fees?

I'm using (and love) this:

It's a Sena Corsa case, and gives me the best of both worlds (easy to go case free, offers protection) and I love how it looks. :)

^VERY nice, I want to get something similar for my 4. Just a pouch of sorts I can fit into my pocket and slide the phone/hold it around in.

Until then i'm sporting this a thin plastic case that exposes everything nicely dangerously.

I'm thinking of getting one of these: Link
Don't worry about the price, it's not dollars. However, it has a magnet lock for the front cover. So close to the screen, is that a good idea? Would it even protect the phone all that much if I drop it? Are those flashy plastic covers for 10 dollars better for protection or is it just for a fancy look?

Not sure about the magnet thing but it should be fine.

It will definitely protect it. Possibly more so as it covers the screen. Plastic ones are tougher (depending on make) but the one you posted has more padding.

I would go with plastic ones as they look way better and are pretty safe.

I highly recommend this, and I've been very happy with it. Very svelte and surprisingly durable - no damage on my phone despite half a dozen drops or so over the past year and a half.

I strongly recommend the Moshi iGlaze if you just want to protect the back, and add virtually zero extra bulk.

That's another option, seems to be very highly recommended on the Apple store too. I just don't know whether I want to cover up the back of the phone, which to me is the nicest part.

Does anyone here have any impressions they could share on the official bumper? Negative or positive. I'm really leaning on just getting one. It preserves the nice look of the phone, both front and back, and keeps the thing protected from surface scratches, drops and knocks.

I can obviously tell there may be a risk of scratching the steel, but weighing up whether I want to keep the steel perfect and risk smashing or scratching the key parts of my phone, it still seems worth it.

Some of the reviews on the Apple store baffle me. Someone can say "I dropped the phone a couple of times and it protected it", then go onto give the product one star because it scratched the metal, which you never see anyway once the bumper is attached.

I've honestly been contemplating going case free, but seeing my friend with his smashed iPhone, both front and back is a sobering reminder of what can happen.
