Over the last few days my 4S has come up with "Sim Failed" on at least 10 occasions. I hvae to restart the phone to reconnect my mobile network. This had happened once or twice since getting my phone in November but the frequency has shot up this weekend

Is this a common fault? Am I going to have to get a replacement from Apple/Orange? The phone is only 3 months old and insured so I should have no trouble getting it replaced

If I do have to get it replaced, what are the key things to do / backup before I hand it over to ensure I can restore as much stuff as possible on my new phone?

I got that $4 deal extreme case in the mail Friday and so far it's really nice. Sturdy, and adds some bulk, but still keeps the phone slick so it's easy to get in and out of my pocket. Only downside is the shipping time is like 4 weeks so you have to be patient ,but for the price you can't beat it. It would easily cost $20-30 to get a similar case at a b&m store.

Maybe your sim is messed up?

I know it's been asked ad nauseum, but can anyone recommend a good case for the iPhone 4/4S? I don't want an otterbox, but people keep telling me it's the only one that really "works" in the case of the phone accidentally falling.

get the capsule case from getuncommon.com you can customize the case decal, or just get it black (like i did)
the good thing about the case is that it is low profile and protects your phone too. between the back of the phone and the back of the case, there is a rubber piece, so that if you drop your phone, the back won't crack. also is a nice finish that slides easily into pocket.

both my friend and i have had the case and dropped our phones many-a-times. no damage to the phone at all.

Is it easy to doctor/photoshop any screenshots you take with the 4s?

I'm asking because I've got a screenshot of a text message sent to me by someone. I'm a complete iphone noob, and I just want to know what are the chances that what I'm looking at might have been altered in any way.

The person who sent it to me is a 16 year old girl who is completely computer illiterate, so I really doubt there was any of this going on, but I've never owned an Apple product and wasn't sure if it's easier than I think.

I got my iPhone 4S about two days ago. Got it off contract, new in box (with shrink wrap still on it) off Craigslist for $475.

Loving it. I had a 3GS not too long ago, and this is so much better in about every conceivable way. Hardware, iOS, iCloud.

Needless to say, I am happy.

It is incredibly easy to doctor those images (using Autodesk's Sketchbook for example) - does seem unlikely that someone computer illiterate would do it though.

Anybody with a white 4s experiencing any color changing on the plastic piece between the steel band and glass? Mine is turning kind of blue in spots, which I'm assuming is from my jean pockets. It is pretty hard to get off.

I've noticed that really quality denim definitely bleeds dye for the first couple wears. I've noticed it on my socks before. I think thats why you're not supposed to wash jeans for a long time after you get them, so you can naturally wear your own creases in to them. The coloring sets once you wash them.

Make sure it's under your 3rd time exchanging it. After my Seidio case with the kickstand broke 3 times (the kickstand hinge was so weak), they said they couldn't replace it anymore.

I paid for the warranty thingy when I bought it back in October, and with as easily as the thinner parts of the case break, I figured it was a worthwhile investment.

iBooks needs to put your phone on lockdown because I can't focus on this book I'm ready when tweets and iMessages are flying at my face.

My 2nd IPhone 4s replacement from the apple store now keeps losing wifi connection, the last Iphone or even my very first Iphone 4s didnt have this problem.

All my other devices are fine and having no problem with the connection , hell i even reset my router still didnt work then on top of that spotlight search hangs for a slight second.

Before i got the replacement at the store the " Genius " said that i could not get another replacement if i have any more software issues and told me to do a restore, set it up as a new IPhone which i have done about 4 times now and the issue is still there:-l

Spoke to apple care and was told to hold my ground if the Phone works with the Genius at my appointment ( for the 4th TIME ) and make my case and shouldn't have a problem getting a replacement AGAIN

So what are my options here ?

Any recommendations for cheapo screen protectors off Amazon (no power support expensive ones)? I ordered some a while back for my 4 and they were decent but looks like that seller isn't around anymore.

Oh, and don't reply with any "you don't need a screen protector" nonsense.

Monoprice.

Has anyone tried this case? Are the colors on the site representative of the in person product? How is it holding up? I read the top cracks after a while and the headphone jack is a bit small.

Buy a candyshell. It's what I've been using since day one and they're flippin' sweet.

I currently own a 3GS and I am running iOS5 on it. I am going to buy a 4S and I think that I am not going to bother syncing it to my Mac for now. I assume when I buy the 4S I can log into my iCloud account and it will download my contacts and Calender? What about the app store? It won't automatically download previously bought apps will it?

cheers :)

i suggest the Reflex Series case over the Commuter. Goes in your pocket easier without taking on lint, same protection, same company. I've had both and can completely recommend the Reflex over the Commuter. The Commuter was very annoying. http://www.otterbox.com/iPhone-4-/-...SUN_color=20&start=2&cgid=reflex-series-cases

Candyshells are great, I had one when I first got my iPhone and loved it. Now I'm using an Elago S4 in Orange because it looks so damn sexy on my iPhone.

if you make a backup of your 3GS now on icloud, when you get the new iphone, you can restore from backup and it will download all your apps and their data/ settings/ etc.

i you don't have the backup, you will still get bookmarks/ contacts/ addresses/ calendar. and you redownload apps manually.

but I suggest using the backup/ restore method for a more seamless transfer.

Using icloud, it'll put all apps currently on your phone to the new phone with the save states intact. All other info like contacts and stuff too if you're using iCloud for those.

I was thinking that are a ton of awesome things a Siri enabled camera-app would allow.

Anyone have problems getting two sets of notifications? I get double text and email alerts but they don't show up twice when I check them.

I just started getting this and have yet to figure out what's causing it. I hope it doesn't require a restore to fix.

Sometimes the first alert doesn't even get to finish playing before the second begins, so it sounds like one long weird alert.

the thing is it couldn’t be Siri the way it is now, with a required network connection. takes too long.

it would have to be something local for faster response times.

Which makes me wonder if Apple could offload some of that intelligence to understand natural language onto the phone itself. that’s gotta be down the line for Siri at some point.

Did the Relfex scratch the side of the phone?

Okay, so I'm dealing with a weird problem. Lately my iPhone has been acting up. It struggles to triangulate my position, or stream anything over 3G, but I get 5 bars inside the city. Also, some incoming phone calls go straight to voicemail. Especially if I'm in another app using 3G. On the other hand, whenever I go out to the burbs I get 2 to 3 bars, but everything runs perfectly, and the phone is fast as hell. I'm wondering if the bar read what the true indicator of signal strength is? I'm using iOS5, and my provider is Verizon Wireless

I bought these recently when I bought a Candyshell:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005X0UJS0/?tag=neogaf0e-20
They are good enough. There is a tiny bit of a rainbow effect when the screen is off, but it seems like it is getting less noticeable. It was the easiest-to-apply screen protector I have ever used. Went on easy with no bubbles (except one tiny bubble on the back near the camera leans). Is thin enough that it doesn't make the screen non-responsive and is clear enough that the retina display still looks very crisp.

I usually hate screen-protectors and only get them to keep my two-year-old from scratching/smudging my shit up, but these are working really good.

After using my 4S for about 3 days or so, I am loving it. It took me forever to figure out how to sync ringtones to it and I've had to put my thousands of songs back on it several times, because of the way I have been doing things with my iTouch in iTunes, my stuff doesn't auto-synch. So I try to do something new and have to synch the phone, losing all my music, then re-add it.
I wish I could use some of the cloud and photostream features, but I only run XP on my computer and Vista is the oldest OS supported for PCs.

After seeing people talk about their home buttons failing and after using the phone, I really don't like the button. It feels really soft and it worries me that it will go out. I much prefer the 'clickier' button on my iTouch4 to the 4S buttons.

Cheers for the info.

Right then, cases. I want something that basically protects the edges from the odd knock, but isn't bulky and ugly.

I've seen the Apple Bumpers obviously, and the Incipio Feather and Incase Snap which seems OK too. I'll have a look at the Apple site, going to buy the phone tomorrow I think so would be good if Apple (UK retail store) has the cases.

OK I am impressed.

I have done the "restore from iCloud" and it's copied over far more than I expected.

Alarm times - check
Audio preferences - check

OK OK, but this one I was actually blown away by. I was recently timing my new commute from a station in London to the tube, to my new job, and I was using the stop watch and using split times to separate the various points in the journey. It's only copied those across too with the stopwatch paused at the time I paused it! Impressive!!

Is there a way to change what the physical switch does on the phone? I always have my phone on vibrate so I want to use it for orientation lock like on the iPad.

Yup, it makes a copy of EVERYTHING and moves it to the new device.

It's what makes it hard to switch phones if you have a lot invested in the ecosystem.

Also, I bought the Incase Snap today too. It's a little pricey at around £25 (but then so was my SIM-free 4S) but it seems to fit nicely and it's not slippey in the hand. It's raised a tiny bit over the front of the screen, so for those users that place their phone face down on a table, it should be raised enough to avoid scratches.

My 4S fucking rules though, it's SOOOOO much quicker than the 3GS and the screen is still lovely.

Alright I need help. Gonna buy tomorrow and need to know something. As someone with a decent amount of music (30+ gigs) is the 64gb iphone worth the cost of admission? I'd ideally like to carry everything, but the $400 price tag is holding me back :/. I have google music on my android now but that pales in comparison to local storage.

I had a 64gb touch two years ago fwiw. I got that for 340 though..

If you're the type who upgrades yearly go 32, but if you upgrade every 2 years I'd probably shoot for the 64gig.

Anyone have any case recommendations? Either something super well made or engraved in wood, or more ideally, very well machined in Stainless Steel, Aluminium etc.

Thanks.

my feeling is that the itunes match service has made local storage less important than before. As long as you're online, you always have access to your entire collection and all your playlists. metadata is synced online and you never need to worry about not having synced the iphone before leaving the house and missing out on the last album you got. Songs download as you listen to them and are then available for offline use. you can delete albums off the local storage whenever you want.

unless your 3G service is terrible, I would just get a 32 GB model and sign up for a year of itunes match.

Yeah I'm a new every 2er, so that's my main consideration.

Well I have the exact same functionality for free through google music, and I'd rather not rely on 3g (even though my area usually has great service) to listen to a song that I don't have locally stored.

yeah I feel the same way about the 3G stuff. it's nice as a backup, but it doesn't strike me as a good thing to rely on. when you wanna hear a song you need it right then and there, no questions asked. local I just more reliable for that. I have the 64gig an have about 38 of it filled with music, and it grows constantly. that's not even counting my photo library or app data.

you need that storage y'all

So thrown down the 400 bones +plus tax and forget about it? I loved my ipod touch in that size and my one complaint was that it didn't have a phone...

Now I'm stuck on whether to get White or Black.... Hmmm

if it were me, 20 months down the line I'd Probaby be feeling pretty good about have twice as much storage. the remorse of that hundred bucks will be long gone.
