Will apple have Siri work with other apps? I would like to tell Siri to tag a song that's on rather than find the sound hound app.

InCase Snap Smoke is a phenomenal case. Has that soft-touch textured feel that makes it less slippery. It's saved my phone from any blemishes over the course of 4-5 drops despite it being very minimalist.

Presumably third-party apps will get updates for Siri functionality, it depends on how much access Apple gives them to the API.

If Siri works as well as advertised it's going to be a game-changer!

I think it'll be a game changer and disappointing at the same time. Android has had a lot of the voice functionality for awhile. I think what helps is some of the natural language or variety in ways that you can ask for stuff. It'll be interesting to see how one can break its understanding. Where it will be a disappointment is when we realize the limitations and scope of Siri. It'll do things really well within the limitations of its range.

They said this?

Siri is nice, but the minute you have to touch the phone it's kinda failed already. It'll be interesting to see if the iPhone 5 can be a completely voiced controlled phone.

I think you can activate it with a headset.

I think a voice command feature is one of those things that is stuck in the past's future.

Yeah, they did it on Star Trek, but that doesn't mean it is actually useful. I don't think voice commands have any place outside of MAYBE while you are driving.

I don't agree with this at all, one touch to activate then speech is far easier than having to type or swipe to get what you want. It'd be nice if it was "live" all the time like the voice recognition on Kinect but I suspect that would be a major battery issue.

Ya, it was weird to see the promo videos not require you to touch the phone, but in all the real demos you clearly had to. Hopefully it'll take a queue after Kinect and have some sort of command activation to let it know. Problem is that could be battery draining. So maybe an on off toggle or something to keep it active for awhile.

Here's the bumper I bought for my white phone:

As you can see on the side, the spot for the mute will easily accommodate the 4S, as it seems that the GSM model of the 4S looks just like the CDMA version of the 4.

You can use the button on Bluetooth and the headphones, or use the activate on raise feature, you need to touch the phone for that, but no buttons needed, so that's nice.

Driving is a huge factor for me, but outside of that, I can think of a few cases where I think it works well. Like the alarm setting, doing that by voice is just so much easier. Also, making a todo list or shopping list by voice will go a long way I think too. Another thing that could be useful is the stuff while cooking where your hands are tied up, but that goes back to the problem of having to hit something first. I like in that bogus promo video that you could ask it to look up conversions and set a cooking timer. But if you have to touch it to activate, then it's pretty fake.

I was in the store today, bumper in hand, but I convinced myself I was being ripped off so I put it down.

Fuck I just wish I could use the thing with no cases or protectors at all sometimes.

well, you shouldn't need to press anything though, haha. i mean, it's nice and all, but the iPhone 4 is fast enough that you could just text whoever/call whoever before siri could do it. sure it's nice with todo apps and whatever, but that's not really that impressive.

Yeah I mostly find voice control on my 4 useful when driving, and when driving I have my bluetooth headset on so I just touch the button on the headset and voice control activates. Pretty cool that I'll now be able to hear emails/texts and dictate replies hands-free.

Same. I'm probably going to mostly use it for doing quick searches on Wolfgram, setting up reminders, getting directions to places, etc. All of those things will be much easier done just by holding down the home button and talking to Siri. I'll be arguing with friends about something--say "when Washington state became a state"--and instead of bringing up Safari or some other browser or app and manually typing in "Washington", then clicking on the appropriate Wikipedia link, I can just hold down the home button and say, "Search Wikipedia for Washington state.", and a few seconds later I'm there.

This will be huge for me at least.

The best part is, you can just say "when did Washington become a state?"

I've been going back and forth with Switcheasy's Trim and the bumper and decided to go with the bumper for when i really want to show off the phone.

For the most part, it's going to be housed in an Otterbox that looks like this:

Hahaha, another perfect example of that company's utter failure.

To be fair, Apple themselves could have held it up.

Not saying it's not a fair suspicion... ;)

On the whole case/bumper thing... I decided I'm gonna try the Graft Leverage. I have a snap case I forgot about that the Turtle Beach guys gave me at E3 I'll use until then. When I get it, I'll let you know how it works out.

(And yes, I'm nuts for spending that on a case but I've spent that on games that ended up sucking too... so if it doesn't work out, it won't be the only silly purchase I've made.)

Haha, that's probably true! I still can't believe how well it seems to pick up on natural speech.

I've been using Speck's Candyshell Cases since the day I bought the phone, swapping them out every 3 months or so when they get really beat up. I've had black, white, gray, and now I'm currently on this color:

A great case and I'll be buying a new one soon, but sometimes I just wish I could use the phone without one.

And I guess I could, but the day I drop the thing or scratch the fuck out of the screen I will completely hate myself.

No I'm just guessing as it would seem to make sense?

it would make perfect sense for apple to open the api to app devs to integrate Siri with other apps.

I'd love to ask Siri how to make Swedish Meatballs and it opens the epicurious app automatically and selects the dish with ingredients.

It would be great to group text people using Siri to organize a dinner, study group or even meeting. Can you ask Siri to text to 3-5 people with one message. for example; Siri please text John, Barbara, David, Samantha and Hoshi "are we on for tonight at 7?"

Any confirmation on how much RAM the thing has?

No one knows because Apple never posts the RAM details. Probably once iFixit does a teardown. Regardless, the efficiency of iOS5 will make up for any supposed "RAM deficiencies".

Yes.

My thing with a case is that I also want my home button protected. Knowing how easy it is to fuck it up, I like cases that cover it up.

I want white+purple bumper but I ordered black...

Watching these Siri demos is making the wait very hard...

Holy fuck. Unbelievable. Apple, as always, absolutely kills it when it comes to execution/implementation. Voice control made for actual human beings. The british male voice @ the end was so much better. What would be awesome is if there was different voice packs you could get.

Holy shit, Siri is for real, then? This seems revolutionary to me.
Yeah some people were so set on a re-designed case that they are over looking how significant Siri integration is. I mean this literally changes the way we use our iPhone. it's a pretty huge update to me even if the phone does look exactly the same, and I don't really see the competition putting out something that works as well as Siri appears to for awhile

Hmm i can upgrade to an iphone 4s at a higher price or wait for a full discount on 2/25. Decisions decisions. Part of me feels like if i wait for 2/25 i might as well wait for the iphone 5 because all my interest will be for the ipad 3.

Yeah i like the British voice at the end too.

Anyone got pics of the black phone with white bumper?

Orange would be cool too. Or blue! I have a green one but I think it might be pre-universal.

I'm sorely tempted to do ths too. I think I've settled on the Sena Kutu (sleeve) because pocket protection is my biggest concern and I don't think I could rest easy knowing the screen and home button were always exposed. But for around the house the Leverage would be perfect. And by perfect, I mean needlessly fun. I'm just worried about the bumper scratching the sides, given that so many bumpers seem to do this.

Are you opting for a chrome or matte clasp? Matte seems to be the popular choice, but I feel like chrome will match my black phone better. If I break down and order I'd go black/chrome.

I don't know why so many black iPhone fans are wishing they'd gone white (Whitta!). For me, there's no contest. I've owned and enjoyed white electronics before, but the white iPhone doesn't suit me at all. It just feels a bit too Paris Hilton. Not that I'm judging those who prefer it - it's a beautiful device - just my association. I love the back of the black phone so much more as well. It's all subjective, but I'm surprised almost everyone who pre-ordered went white.
