iPhone 4S |OT|

I have three in Louisville, KY! Roll on Friday.

Apple may be trying a new route with the Applecare +, but sheer volume will dictate how they handle breaks. If this phone is susceptible to breaks from minor drops I expect them to continue their informal replacement practice.

Why can't iPad2 have Siri anyways? Did they have to install a specific chip or better microphone for the Siri software?

I believe the popular notions going around is that they want a controlled release to Siri. So, that means testing on one device. Secondly, I don't think that the iPad 2 has the noise cancellation mic, and that that affects the language recognition capability. Who knows for sure, though.

As far as API is concerned, I guarantee that we'll see Siri hooks sometime. I'd guess that it would be like how devs can register apps as handling file types. When you open a mail with a PDF or DOCX in it, the user gets to pick what app opens it, but it's not every app. It's only apps that can actually service the doctype (as defined by the developer).

Can anyone confirm that placing the iPhone up to your ear automatically engages Siri if nothing else is happening? I think that I read it in one of the reviews last night, but now I can't find it.

I've never seen a cracked iPhone before, and I'm on a busy Chicago train every day. I guess I should be paying more attention. On the other hand, you guys are scaring the crap out of me with those "spiderwebbed" iPhone 4 stories. Sounds like more break than don't without a case... I really really don't want a case. I haven't seen a single case yet I want to have my sleek iPhone hidden in. They're either too ugly or too expensive. I honestly don't know what I want to do at this point.

Otterboxes mentally and physically pain me.

I'm sure it's of a good build quality, but you're basically putting a pontoon on your phone.
My wife has killed the last 5 phones I've purchased for her. Therefore, she is getting the Otterbox. I, on the otherhand, will be grabbing an Incipio Feather. I've been really pleased with their cases.

The phone is made out of glass.

Glass generally shatters when dropped onto a hard surface from a certain height.

While a case isn't foolproof, it's better than nothing. Even a simple bumper will offer at least a minor amount of impact protection.

AT&T both orders shipped, tracking #s from FedEx not working just yet...

Ordered @ 6 am EST Oct 7th on ATT.com.

Kinda off-topic: What's the best site for finding free apps on a daily basis? Like just free sales that go on every day?

Have you thought about trying something not quite so extreme? Look into the Speck Candyshell. Its what I and the girlfriend have been using for around a year now.

There's a screenshot within the settings that's been floating around that has a "up to face" (language?) on/off switch.

I'm quite familiar with the properties of glass and realize how a case adds protection. I guess I'm just a little shocked by the sheer amount of broken devices.

Well, there's a reason Apple only started charging $20 for back plate replacements.

My wife has dropped an iPhone in the toilet, and left one on top of her car. I've replaced the touchscreens on her phones more times than I can count. Bottom line, she is very careless with her phone. I agree that it ruins that aesthetics, but unfortunately she requires a near military-grade case.

When did this happen? I thought it was a $199 flat repair fee pre-Apple Care+?
That's when you have to replace the entire device - basically whenever you damage the front screen. They have the ability to pop out and replace the back plates in-store.

Does it fit comfortably in your pocket? Is it thicker than a pack of cards? cigarettes? I'm going from a naked 3GS to the 4S, and while I want a case for battery life, I don't want the extra thickness.
It fits comfortably in my pocket. I'd say it's a little bit thicker than a pack of cards but not thicker than a pack of cigs (I think, I don't have cards with me and I've never smoked.)

I wanted to get shots of it next to my Droid but I had to use the camera on the Droid so the next best thing was a launch day PSP. These were taken in my server room with less than optimal lighting, but here ya go:

Apple finally shipped my phone! \(^o^)/

It's still in Hong Kong, but if it's like the same UPS shipping that Play-Asia uses, I have no doubts that it'll arrive on the 14th.

So excited! (^∇^)

Damn it, still preparing for shipment from Apple. Can't find anything on UPS or FedEx by reference number either. Are you supposed to enter the billing phone number or the line you upgraded as reference number? Either way I've been trying both.

I think I am just going to stay with no case and if something does happen to the back, I will order one of those metal back replacements. Is it possible to order a white glass back directly from Apple?

The number associated with the Apple ID you ordered with.

Hang in there, mine just updated this morning (64GB Black ordered from Apple Fri @ 7AM EST).

Mine finally updated! It's in Hong Kong. Thankfully, my case will arrive before the phone. Just have to avoid dropping the phone in those few minutes between pulling it out of the box and slapping it in the case.

Wooo! Finally found it with reference tracking on UPS. Origin scan In Shenzen at 7pm Wednesday. On time for Friday delivery.

Now to refresh every hour or so for the next two days...

Maybe I'll head back to the Dark Souls thread.

Mine has shipped and is sitting in Hong Kong. Really looking forward to Friday - all the Siri demo vids give me hope that I'll use that feature a bunch. :)

I got the Applecare+ so I'm gonna try going caseless. When the 4S was announced I started going caseless on my 4 and it's awesome. You don't realize how much bulk even a small case adds to the device. The design of the 4 is so good.

Cases...

Apple spends so much time on engineering and designing a device so meticulously, only to have shitty plastic thrown on it and hiding all of that effort. Makes the device feel bigger, look cheaper, and make it harder to access to buttons on the edges.

What's the risk of going caseless? Potentially dropping the phone and having it break.
What's the advantage of putting on a case? Potentially dropping the phone and having it potentially not break.

A case doesn't guarantee the safety of the phone...the best defense against that would be just handling your device with a modest amount of care.

I strongly encourage people to go caseless. The only people that should even be considering a case are people that are especially careless or klutzy...and even for those people a very basic case like a bumper or something about as thin as 1mm would protect the device just as well as something that adds considerable bulk and nastiness.

Just rubs me when people assume a case is an automatic when I've had an iPhone for over 2 years now and never had any problems at all...and that's including accidental drops on tile floors. Hell, I'm not even particularly over careful with my phone. I spin it in my hand all the time and throw it on my bed from a distance while I get ready to go to sleep.

Use your head and your iPhone won't get dead! My phone looks pretty much exactly like it did on day 1 and it's been caseless and heavily used the entire time.

This would be a marvellously insightful post if humanity was made up of pre-programmed droids.

As a result, it's a horrible post, filled with stupidity. Accidents happen. Trust me, coming from someone who knows (my girlfriend dropped mine and spiderwebbed the screen) the ability to show off your fancy phone to curious friends is not a decent trade-off for not having protection incase you drop it. Yes, it might be nice to look at all naked and shiny all the time, but you'll hate yourself for days if you accidentely drop it and chink the screen/body.

IF YOU'VE EVER MADE A MISTAKE BEFORE, GET A CASE.

Still nothing shipped on Sprint. I have a tracking number, but it just shows as a reference and when you go to UPS you get nothing but a notice that the shipping label was made.

The CNN review says "By default, if you hold the iPhone up to your ear, Siri is activated, so it looks like you're talking to someone on the phone rather than talking to the phone itself. Clever, huh?" so I'd say yes. This is great news because it means I don't have to look silly using siri in public :)

I freaking hate the way Verizon does their order status. Still says "will deliver by 10/14" but apparently hasn't shipped yet. God damn it.

Anyone order from Verizon and gotten a tracking number? Which courier did they use? UPS is late in the afternoon for me so I'd rather it be USPS or FedEX.

I'm not going to take the bait, but I disagree :)

Am I the only one getting the iPhone at Best Buy? I pre-ordered it there and I'm super excited. No line waiting, bia! They're even gonna CALL me ahead of time to let me know if they have enough stock for their pre-orders tonight. Hopefully I pre-ordered it early enough that I can get my shiny new 32GB black iPhone :)

I'm fairly certain I'm getting it, though. Woo! I hope I can tell them to **** off though when they want to activate it. I want to do that myself!

I ordered through apple and it's still saying that it's being prepared to ship... Panic has not set in just yet.

Edit: It's in Hong Kong

Just saw a live demo from the CBS Early show of the iPhone 4S.

The reporter was demonstrating Siri with the a text message: "Tell Mom that I'll be running five minutes late."

She had to say it three-four times until finally Siri recognized her command.

First time: Siri said no new text messages.
Second time: Brought up a menu.
Third time: Say response again.
Fourth-Fifth time: Displayed send text message.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. I'm sure it will work reasonably well, but there are just too many variables in play when dealing with voice commands.

I find it actually pretty surprising. All videos online and in the reviews don't talk about how it fails constantly, they talk about how it succeeds a majority of the time and the failures stick out so much because the successes are so constant.

Not saying it didn't happen or that reporter did it wrong or something, but I'd consider that an edge case based on all the reviews.

It seemed to me that Siri doesn't work well in room chatter for obvious reasons.

I suppose in a quiet isolated room, Siri works wonderful, and I suppose that's the environment a lot of reviews tested Siri under those conditions.

We already have several videos of people testing Siri in crowded places.

EDIT: This one from earlier in the thread, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKRwV3DTVLo

I'm guessing my wife will have problems like this too. Already, it seems like the microphone on the 4 has trouble picking up her voice when we're on speaker mode. We call my parents every weekend and they can never hear her very well. And it's not like she's a low talker or soft talker, either.

Yessssss my phone shipped even tho the email said 14-21 days.

I'm getting an incipio feather and stealth armor carbon fiber back. Not sure if the feather can go over the back but I'm gonna find out.

Where did you order your 4s from and what time did you order?

So anyone stuck with this Rogers clusterfuck? Reservation number, and nothing else.

I think I'll have to line up at an Apple store now.

My spot in line went down by about a 100. Went from 460 to 320 or so. Some people have noticed that it says 'in progress' instead of open. That's all anyone has gotten. No one has gotten another email or anything. I hope I'm early enough in the line that I get it on friday.

It is pretty annoying seeing every one else in the world getting shipping info/have updates on it, and all we get is a goddamn number saying what spot in line we are, and nothing else.

Canada handled it pretty badly.
