Just spend some money and get a proper GPS app for the iPhone in the meantime. I'm not even kidding when I say that they are an insanely great value.

I spent $50 like 2 years ago and have been enjoying TomTom turn by turn on iPhone ever since with free map updates and live traffic (yearly in-app purchase).

The Google solution depends on having an internet connection to really function last I checked anyways, which really limits it in my mind. Sure it's free, but with offline maps you aren't going to easily find your way through bumble-fuck America on the Edge network! Offline maps is where it's at, and unfortunately you need to take up a couple gigs of space on the phone to get a truly good solution like that to work.

I used Google Nav all the time, though, and never ran into a time where it couldn't generate a map, even in the middle of no where. Maybe it was covered with a data signal after all, but I thought it was excellent, and its integration with the OS and the Internet was great. So easy to find places, navigate, and go into Street View. It was very similar to the default Apple Maps app, but with added navigation, actually.

They should still add it, dammit! :p

Anyone able to check their order status on Verizon?

Oh is this a bigger issue than just me? I ordered mine with a business account, so I don't have a 'last name' to enter into that field (and yes, I've tried all last names that might apply).

YESS FINALLY
No tracking number, but I'll take it!

So what is the consensus on using screen protectors? The only other Apple device I've ever owned was an ipod nano that I won in a contest and the screen got scratched about 3 seconds after I took it out of the box. I'm hoping their touchscreens are more durable. I didn't use a protector on my Droid for years and the screen still looks brand new.

is there a list of what mags will be on news stand?

No clue, but all the ones that use Adobe's publishing, like New Yorker and Wired and the like, probably won't be in there at launch unless Adobe finished their work (unlikely) to update their publishing platform. Adobe said they will support Newsstand, but I don't think it'll be ready by tomorrow.

apparently it doesn't scratch at all since it's glass. it CAN crack though hah.

Just got my all-white otterbox from Amazon.

The white plastic has a strange purplish-tint to it. Might return it for something else...

Can someone explain to me why so many on this forum use a damn otterbox? Are you serving in Iraq, jumping off cliffs, or using your phones as baseballs? What exactly is the point of THAT level of protection, when it increased the size of the phone so much, not to mention its the ugliest thing I've ever seen. For 99% of people a thin standard case is more than enough.

hmm i ordered that white otterbox too. i might spraypaint the white plastic (the part that looks purple-ish) a bright blue or purple if that tint bothers me.

@Paradoxal_Utopia i have one for my blackberry and it's been a great case. i'm buying one because the bb one has been a high quality product that works for me. i'm also open to buying another slim case if i see one that's cool, but this is what i'm buying originally.

Quick carrier poll: AT&T, Verizon or Sprint? Are you sticking with your existing provider or switching?

Old AT&T to Verizon switcher here.

In the process of listening to last weeks podcast. Color me shocked. Why did you switch in the end?

I've dropped it plenty of times with no problems, protects the phone from getting wet, and it's rather durable. I like it and it serves me well, despite the bulk.

Just because you hate what it does to the phone doesn't mean that everyone else isn't looking for some sort of major protection for their cases. Hell, last time I was in Disneyland, from various cast members to random people wouldn't stop raving about their otterboxes.

You have to realize these things can break from small accidents. Sure I dropped mine without a case down the stairs and it's fine but Ive also seen an iphone fall on carpet and crack. YMMV. For some waterproof is a must as well. Some people work and play hard, they are just trying to avoid accidents they had before with other phones.

Now why people still insist on the fugly crappy otterbox I dont know. There are way better options less bulky and more protective while being waterproof.

For instance this is the best option out their. A genius at the applestore showed me his iphone in a ziplock bag filled with water with this case. Fuckin awesome.

Lifeproof iPhone 4/4s Case.

Shock, snow, water, dirt ect protective. Theres a shit ton of videos on their site showing it filming underwater, being chucked far as shit and so on.

Isn't it $99 to replace your phone? Why spend $70 on a case?

The cheapest it would be is $148 (Applecare+ and $49 replacement fee) to replace a phone that was damaged by something a case would protect. Standard warranty is not going to cover you dropping your phone down the stairs.

Was looking at the Lifeproof cases and I may bite but since I'm able to get the otterbox for significantly less than msrp off Amazon (paid $19.99 rather than$49.99), I'll just weigh my options for the time being.

Do they sell Otterbox cases at the AT&T store?

Do those stores usually have a good selection of cases or am I better off shopping somewhere else for them?

Not all Otterbox cases are bulky.
I use this case for my 3GS. I've used about 3 or 4 different cases and this one has been by far the best quality case out of all of them

Apple stores dont carry them. Otterbox are low quality. I really domt get it. That crappy fat rubber gets dirty and tends to rip and warp. There are way better, slimmer options out their.

They sell them there, but being charged $50 for the case is a rip-off - and I like them. Like I said, I ordered off of Amazon and they tend to have better pricing for all of them - as in half price of say what you pay for at the AT&T store or Best Buy. Same selection too.

so, what's the scope of things that Siri will understand? We all know it will understand functions related to the core iphone apps, but can I ask it to "download the latest Giant Bombcast", or "open Spotify and play the new Wilco album from Track 4" ?

I understand that, I just kind of want to see a case in person before I purchase it. I just want to shop at a store and then buy online.

So from your response it sounds like AT&T and Best Buy are the places to go. Thanks!

I had a last-minute anxiety attack about switching, worried about slower 3G speeds on Verizon and AT&T sorted out some of my upgrade eligibility problems so I considered sticking with them. But then I remembered all the dropped calls and poor signals and frustration I've had on their network and figured I'd hate myself if I didn't sack up and make a change.

Still got a little bit of switchers anxiety but I'm hopeful Verizon will be an improvement for me. We'll know on Friday when I start putting it through its paces!

Why is my order from Apple still processing? :(

It still says delivery on 14 Oct, but I'm getting antsy.

And holy shit does that Otterbox case look ugly. Maybe it improves with a phone in it, but it looks really bulky.

Yeah, I get that. I actually do that a lot when in a b&m store: see what I like, snap a pic of the barcode in the Amazon app, compare prices and then buy. No fuss plus sometimes Best Buy has some good deals that Amazon doesn't have or are a bit cheaper.

it's always the dumbshits that get these things early

one of teh phone's greatest futures is that it shoots video at 180p

Watching that vid was painful.

What. time. is. it. in. new. york. YOU DON'T HAVE TO TALK LIKE A ROBOT.
Also, Why not say commands that HAVENT been demoed by Apple?
O, and I love how he mistakenly thinks an app he downloaded is part of the OS.

But I admit I like the 'futures' of this phone.

White. It's why I didn't get the 4. Waited for the White 4 but that came out too late in the cycle for me.

It's just beautiful. Every time I see it in the wild. Cannot wait until Friday (if it ever moves past preparing for shipping).

16GB white. I thougt about black, but:

easier to spot fingerprints
easier to spot scratches
my 3GS is white as well

Edit:

Gary is now scratching his eyes out... :D

Black all the way, just prefer the darker color. Also seeing a friend's white version I appreciate the contrast the black gives and definitely noticed that the light color made the screen look a bit smaller.

I gotta agree with your sentiment. That case is some ugly, ugly, shit.
