Also, Why not say commands that HAVENT been demoed by Apple?

Exactly. I'd be all like "Who is the president of Sri Lanka? Where do Snails go in the Winter? What was the last text message I got from my Dad? Based on the average lifespan of men in my country, when am I expected to die? Do analysts think Apple will do a 2:1 stock split any time soon? I'm thinking of a song that goes like *duh nuh nuh nuh nuh, nuh na nuh nuh nuh IRON MAN* who sings that?"

So what is the consensus on using screen protectors? The only other Apple device I've ever owned was an ipod nano that I won in a contest and the screen got scratched about 3 seconds after I took it out of the box. I'm hoping their touchscreens are more durable. I didn't use a protector on my Droid for years and the screen still looks brand new.

For my iPhone 4 I don't use one and have it in one of these Speck PixelSkin HD case thingies which I got for free.

For a years worth of general pocket wear and tear everyday, sitting next to keys and headphones and a few accidental knock off the sides of the sofa onto the floor and it looks brand new.

Though personally I hate screen protectors, regardless of device I have never had one go on properly that didn't make it look cheap or seen anyone else's that looks any good, I prefer to take care of it, or stick it in a sock.
Ironically it looks like whoever's iPhone that is in the picture has one one, lol.

I would expect a ton of videos and stories starting Friday based on all the things Siri CAN'T do and calling it overhyped. Because as smart as it is, I imagine it's pretty easy to confuse it if you ask it really complex questions. We'll see.

Great case, got it for my dads phone.

The cheapest it would be is $148 (Applecare+ and $49 replacement fee) to replace a phone that was damaged by something a case would protect. Standard warranty is not going to cover you dropping your phone down the stairs.

See I don't understand how people think this is worth it. The iPhone itself has a one year warranty on a two year device. It doesn't cover accidental damage, but it'll cover most things. So you're really buying acciental damage, and an additional year of normal coverage for $99. The $49 replacement is what sorta hurts it because it's normally only $199 to replace it without any coverage. You only save $50. You essentially would have to damage and replace your phone every two year cycle to make it worth while.

If the iPhone was originally white, everyone and their mom would be absolutely drooling about the new black one. Sooo slick and you can't even tell the screen apart from the front glass. omg

The white novelty will eventually wear out too.

But both colors look very good, don't sweat it.

Most likely. I'll be more than happy if I can reliably talk to it to set up reminders, find directions, and search for things on the Internet without having to touch the keyboard.

Anyone use a Mophie Juice Pack Air? I kinda want more battery life, but it looks bulky as hell.

I don't own an iphone but I actually have a Mophie Air. I found one on Amazon for $35 the other day for my impending 4s and it just came in.

The case seems solid and it's not very bulky at all, especially compared to the otterboxes I've seen out in the wild. My biggest complaint with it is the fact that it covers up your dock port so I'll have to plug it in with a loose micro usb.

How do you figure that? $199 is the cost of the subsidized phone when you're eligible for an "upgrade" from your carrier. Once you've redeemed that upgrade you aren't getting a replacement phone for $199.

I'm surprised at how robotic the voice is and how sluggish it seemed with simple stuff like "what time is it in..."

I have super low expectations for Siri though and can't imagine ever using it, so it doesn't bother me much.

I wish I were on the team that got to program the responses to stuff like that. They already have "Who are you?", "I love you", and "How old are you?"

Again, the Siri voice is not from Siri. It has been in the device for a long time now for Accessibility. I'd imagine that they're working on updating it now especially with giving Siri the Beta title.

I've read $200 is what the Apple Store charges to swap out your phone for a new one if you break it.

applecare+ just does not seem worth it to me.

out of warranty iPhone repair/replacement is $199

applecare+ is $99 then $49 for a replacement so after your first replacement you are out $149

I'd rather take the risk of not getting applecare+ and worse case if I need a replacement I'm out $50 more than I would have been, or I may never break it at all and save $150

unless they are getting away with the $199 replacement cost I don't see the point

People are saying without Apple Care+, the normal replacement fee is $199.

The voice reconization is light years better then fucking voice control, can Siri do podcasts eh. Play Podcast Tested

Yup. Voice control is so, so bad. It just doesn't seem to work at all. The music control is the first thing I'm going to test. Voice control is limited to like Albums and Playlists right? I'd love to just say, "Play A Night in Tunisia" and have her respond, "Do you want Miles Davis or Sonny Rollins."

That's why Apple called it a Beta.

It's their get out of jail free card.

Does it fit comfortably in your pocket? Is it thicker than a pack of cards? cigarettes? I'm going from a naked 3GS to the 4S, and while I want a case for battery life, I don't want the extra thickness.

Still having serious white guilt. I might have to put a white bumper on my black phone to alleviate it.

I'm sure you can find someone to trade if you really don't like your black phone.

Plenty of people won't like their white phones.

The thing to remember, and that most people are missing including This Is My Next, is that Siri isn't an artificial intelligence... it is only a language parser. People will be confused on that, and will get annoyed by it.

Will those cases work with the 4S and it's new mute switch position? Looks good. £20 in the UK.

Well part of the reason is that Apple made it sound like an AI.

Fuck if you speak queens english to siri the voice that responses is british man i want Jeeves!

Siri is AI just like clever bot it understands statments that gets parae through the voice translation that is being done on the phone or the apple server farm.

Wait, how is it not an artificial intelligence? It may not be some incredible Star Trek stuff, but I don't see what makes it not an AI.

Further to my earlier posts I am completely miffed at O2 for not considering PAYG customers as 'existing customers' eligible for an iPhone 4S contract.

As such I was searching the Vodafone website for their offerings, up pops a 'customer adviser' window. I get chatting to one of their reps and not ten minutes later I've ordered myself a black 16gig 4S on a £31 a month contract, with 6 months half price and a £120 up front cost (£49 back through Quidco).

All in all not too shabby! I know Three would of been a fair bit cheaper, but I don't find their coverage is quite as good as O2 or Voda. In fact I've never had a problem with O2, in fact I found their new priority moments to be a great improvement over the old surprises, but their policy regarding existing customers and the 4S really angered me.

Anyway, hope I can pick up the shiny thing on Friday, sadly availability was never indicated during the ordering process, slightly odd.

Oh that's a good looking case. I think Ima buy it.

Do the screen protectors come in with it?

Don't think so. A few reviews on Apple and Amazon say its quite tight and can peel screen protectors off quite easily. I'll definitely get one of these if it works with the 4S.

PAYG customers are always treated as bottom of the barrel. O2 have fucked over a large number of Pay Monthly customers this time, as well, so not sure why you're so miffed.

How do you know it's not an AI? Have they released the source code? If so, awesome, I'd like to see how they made a language parser make decisions.

Siri is certainly an AI. Maybe not the brightest, it probably can't pass the touring, but as long as it can do what people expect it to do, it has a chance of being a hit. And if it is a hit, it will get improved, and more funding, and maybe one day can reach a point where it is nearly indistinguishable from another person.

How do you know Siri is not a unicorn that doesn't communicate with pixies in the sky? Have they released the source code?

Any language parser is an AI in some respect, but people are going to think of HAL, and it ain't HAL.

Where is Siri making decisions that differs from a language parser?

I'd say the part where it can understand context to a certain extent is a pretty big deal.

I just find it disgraceful of a company to treat their customers as such, especially from a company I've only had good experiences with in the past. I actually understand their policy of trying to look after their existing customers before new subscribers, but they should treat all them equally rather than excluding a specific sub-set - pretty much all O2 customers bar PAYG qualify. Telling some customers they're not important / not eligible just achieves the opposite of what they set out to do.

I wasn't aware they've also screwed over their Pay Monthly guys, what's happened with them?

Ordered Friday afternoon from Apple. Stil preparing for shipment but says Delivers Oct 14. Doesn't it have to come from China? Oh well, maybe tomorrow. First world problems and whatnot.
